TikTok Says It Reached 1 Billion Monthly Users Worldwide

• Video app has been downloaded more than 3 billion times
• TikTok gained over 300 million monthly users in a year

More than 1 billion people across the globe now useByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok every month, the company said Monday, an announcement that underscored its arrival as a global social media force.

“That’s a billion people every month watching and sharing each other’s creativity,” Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Pappas said in aTikTok videoMonday.

The video-sharing platform has gained more than 300 million active monthly users since July 2020, the last time it reported engagement numbers. With TikTok becoming a go-to form of entertainmentduring the pandemic, the number of people using the platform has nearly doubled since the end of 2019.

TikTok managed to grow in the U.S. despitefacing backlashfrom former President Donald Trump. In 2020, his administration tried to ban TikTok from operating in the country, arguing that the Chinese-owned company posed national-security threats. In June, President Joe Biden decided tonot to pursuethe Trump-era ban.

The app has been downloaded more than 3 billion times, according to data from research firm Sensor Tower.
