Each day is a “this OR that works” affair, not an inclusive “this AND that” situation.\n\n\nThis week it’s been cyclical/reflation/value shares working in a pendulum swing back into favor as expensive growth ebbs. The moves in value vs. growth this year have gone in a few big oscillations, with the styles pulling even recently before value got traction.\n\n\n\nThis could simply be the market looking ahead to another rolling over of Covid cases and revival of yields, but to me the rotational action itself – money stays invested, just shifts around – is more the point. Loose financial conditions, corporate abundance keeping sellers at bay as the tactical players maneuver with marginal flows toward what’s lagged or what fits best with the narrative of the moment.\n\n\nCPI data as expected, pretty benign/neutral and consistent with the “inflationary bulge is transitory” thesis favored by Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell. Doesn’t alter the discussion too much but certainly didn’t add weight to the camp pushing for a quicker taper. Market is OK with waiting another month to get a clearer signal.\n\n\nPart of the story this week is very low volumes – seasonal slowness – and a coming options/futures expiration which, all else equal, will tend to pin the S&P around the nearest levels with a lot of outstanding trader exposures.\n\n\nBigger picture, here’s what we know: Year two after a huge market bottom and dramatic profits rebound tends to see more moderate, choppy but still positive returns for stocks. Often there’s a migration to sustainable-earnings and quality stocks. Years in which the S&P 500 was up at least 15% midway through have tended to feature further second-half gains but with more pullbacks and slower upside progress. August-September are on average tough, but seasonals don’t dictate the whole story.\n\n\nMeme/speculative stuff is getting whippy and tougher to play. AMC apes are losing their engagement with business fundamentals. GameStop suffering from a hype vacuum and boredom. SPACs blowing up here and there. Moderna, Inc. had a massive buying climax Monday (when we noted it had traded $20B worth of stock, 4x AAPL) and has trapped the chasers.\n\n\nMarket breadth is again very mixed. Weak on Nasdaq, where we have more than 100 new 52-week lows, better on NYSE. Barely more than half of S&P 500 stocks are above their 3-month average price, very uneven participation. Also means a lot of groups have had decent pullbacks and maybe froth has been drained away.\n\n\nVIX sluggish with index volatility and intraday ranges so muted, and with CPI print out of the way:
