Amazon Prime Day 2021 is coming. That’s good news for consumers, and investors hope it will be good news for Amazon.com stock. They shouldn’t get their hopes up.
When is Amazon Prime Day 2021? The company announced that this year’s Prime shopping days will occur on June 21 and 22, promising “two days of epic savings.”
Prime Day is good for business. Last year, the sale was pushed out into October due to the pandemic but the shift didn’t hurt sales. Amazon reported $3.5 billion over the two-day shopping event, up 60% compared with 2019.
The huge Prime performance didn’t boost the stock, though. Amazon shares were about $3,200 when Prime Day 2020 was announced. Amazon stock sits at about $3,200 now. Shares haven’t gone anywhere in months.
Don’t expect that to change. Last year’s Prime Days were about three times as busy as any other day but still accounted for just 2% of Amazon’s almost $200 billion in online sales during 2020. That just won’t move the needle.
Yes, Amazon shares could use a catalyst. Just don’t expect Prime Days to be it.
