Nvidia Is Gaining Graphics Card Market Share. What Does This Mean for AMD?

Motley Fool2021-08-28

Today's video looks at recent news affecting the semiconductor market. A report on graphics processing units (GPUs) by Jon Peddie Research has stated that Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) has grabbed discrete GPU market share from Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD). Here are some highlights from the video.

  1. The report was posted on Aug. 26, and shows that for the second quarter of 2021, AMD has about 17% of the PC discrete GPU market share, and Nvidia has 83%. Nvidia has increased by roughly 3 percentage points year over year and approximately 2 percentage points quarter over quarter.
  2. At the moment, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) is not known for its discrete GPUs, but that will change in the upcoming months. Intel is expected to release Alchemist, its high-performance GPUs, in the first quarter of 2022.
  3. Nvidia completed its acquisition of DeepMap on Aug. 26. DeepMap is a start-up dedicated to building high-definition maps for autonomous vehicles. Nvidia currently has the Nvidia Drive platform, a platform that helps the development of autonomous vehicles. The acquisition of DeepMap improves the services Nvidia can provide to its customers.
