Why are people demonizing shorts. Institutions or retail, there are longs and shorts on both sides of a trade. They are votes on the fundamental value of a company. Why does it have to be some sort of socio/philosophical battle. The markets ultimately will settle on fundamental value, nothing more. Even if it gets manipulated, one way or another, it will settle.
