Both are tilted toward large-cap, tech-oriented stocks.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average&nbsp;was positive, while the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;was off 0.8%.</p><p>The rise in yields is being blamed in large part on expectations for a potential surge in inflation thanks to ramped up government spending and ultraloose monetary policy. Fears that the Federal Reserve could move to begin withdrawing some liquidity sooner than anticipated is seen helping to unsettle stocks, analysts said.</p><p>But Adam argued that inflation not only is unlikely to “short circuit” the rally, it may be a welcome development for stock-market bulls.</p><p>“When analyzing how the S&amp;P 500 performed under varying levels of core inflation, equities performed above-average in an environment where core inflation was between 1-4%,” he wrote.</p><p>Inflation at those levels is generally considered healthy when it coincides with improving economic activity, Adam said. The reason is because companies have pricing power, allowing them to lift prices, while also reaping the benefits from productivity gains, which helps to boost earnings growth.</p><p>Raymond James expects core inflation to be around 2%. He’s really caught between a rock and a hard place.”What’s got the market’s attention recently has been a pickup in government bond yields, particularly further out on the curve.While the 2-year is unchanged for 2021, the 5-year has risen nearly a quarter percentage point as of Friday’s market close while the benchmark 10-year note has seen its yield jump 41 basis points to 1.34%, an area where it hasn’t been since around the same time in 2020, before the worst of the pandemic struck.The 30-year bond yield has surged even more, leaping nearly half a point this year to 2.14%.Powell’s dilemma is this: Rising bond yields could be signaling the reflation of the economy that the Fed has been pushing and are therefore higher for good reasons. However, should the trend get out of control, the Fed then might have to tighten policy faster than the market expects, offsetting some of the good that has come with the burst in yields.Complicating the matter is that markets also might not like it if Powell is overly complacent.“If this testimony was behind closed doors, I think Jay Powell would be quite pleased with what he sees in the economy and the markets,” Sheets said, using the Fed chair’s nickname. “But given that it’s public, he’s got to be careful. If he’s too sanguine about the rise in rates, the markets are going to take that as a significant green light for rates to rip higher.”“The Fed is comfortable with an organic rise in rates reflecting shifts in views on growth and inflation,” he added. “But I think the Fed also wants to be careful that it doesn’t create and amplify a self-sustaining dynamic that pushes rates higher for other reasons.”Those “other reasons” primarily would be fears that the economy could overheat.Stimulus and more stimulusThe Fed has run historically loose policy for the past year, dropping its benchmark borrowing rate to near zero and buying at least $120 billion of bonds each month. That’s on top of a series of since-expired lending and liquidity programs implemented in the early days of the Covid-19 crisis.Along with that, Congress has come in with more than $3 trillion of fiscal stimulus and could approve up to $1.9 trillion more by the end of week.All that has transpired amid an economy that, besides a still-troubling employment problem primarily in the service sector, is humming. Wall Street is taking up first-quarter growth expectations and market-based indicators of inflation are rising.That’s why Powell’s tightrope walk this week will be all the more compelling.“The market mood has changed,”Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor at Allianz, said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” It’s no longer whether yields are going higher, it’s when is the move too big. That’s what the market’s trying to figure out.”Investors are particularly concerned whether all the stimulus isn’t going overboard and threatening to destabilize the economy over the longer run.“I can predict that the yellow lights are flashing all over the Fed because of the [yields] move and the steepening of the yield curve, and the Fed may do more to try to control yields,” El-Erian said.Fed officials have largely dismissed so-called yield curve control to use its bond purchasing power to control rates between various fixed income maturities.But the market could force the Fed’s hand, and Powell is likely to get asked about where he stands on what tools the Fed has to calm market issues. He has repeatedly stressed that the central bank has the weapons to control inflation, but deploying those comes with a price. Markets used to low yields and companies accustomed to cheap borrowing costs could get rattled by an unexpected Fed move.Evidence of how clearly the market is watching the issue came Monday morning, when European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said she is “closely monitoring the evolution of longer-term nominal bond yields.” Her words were enough to calm a jittery market and turn what had been an opening loss on Wall Street into a mixed market with the Dow up in early afternoon trading. Treasury yields were mostly flat on the day.Tom Lee, managing partner and head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, noted that his “clients have already expressed some apprehension about this week. increase their exposure to raw materials, which are poised to benefit from a vaccine-driven global economic recovery, aided by fiscal stimulus. Some are even predicting a prolonger period of commodity-intensive growth that marks a repeat of the so-called “supercycle” of the 2000s — where oil and metal prices hit record highs as China’s rapid industrialisation caught the industry napping.</p>\n<p>“It’s easy — and largely accurate — to present the 2021 commodity outlook as a V-shaped vaccine trade,” said Goldman Sachs in a recent report. “What we think is key, however, is that this recovery in commodity prices will actually be the beginning of a much longer structural bull market for commodities.”</p>\n<p>Commodities, which have been out favour with investors for the best part of a decade, have enjoyed a strong run in recent months helped by demand from China, the world’s biggest buyer of natural resources. Soyabean prices are up more than 50 per cent over the past year, while copper has risen around 40 per cent. Oil, meanwhile, has rebounded to its highest since the early days of the coronavirus crisis. Brent, the international standard, hit $60 on Monday.</p>\n<p>The rally has been exceptionally wide-ranging. A basket of 27 commodity futures — from coffee to nickel — tracked by specialist asset manager SummerHaven showed that all had positive returns over the six months to mid-January, including any gains from rolling over futures contracts.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d27002730a162c7e367ac38b6ffc4ae1\" tg-width=\"1400\" tg-height=\"1000\"></p>\n<p>“This is really unusual. We’ve looked back 50 years and we’ve never seen this basket of commodities all go up at once,” said managing partner Kurt Nelson.</p>\n<p>Still, some investors say the market is not ready to embark on a new supercycle just yet. “What we certainly do have at the moment is a cyclical recovery driven by restocking in Europe, the US and China and boosted by supply disruptions,” said George Cheveley, portfolio manager at asset management company Ninety One. He said a broader shift is “two to three years away”.</p>\n<p>SummerHaven’s Nelson says a key catalyst for the rally has been a concern that the unprecedented monetary and fiscal policies enacted during the crisis will feed inflation, encouraging fund managers to protect themselves by buying commonly used hedges such as oil and metals.</p>\n<p>Given that most commodities are priced in dollars, last year’s slide in the value of the greenback is also making them cheaper in other currencies, adding to demand.</p>\n<p>Eliot&nbsp;Geller, a partner at CoreCommodity Management, thinks this macroeconomic backdrop for commodities is stronger than at any time in the previous decade.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;“Since 2010, we have seen equity markets rally, a strong US dollar, interest rates trend lower and inflation expectations decline,” he said. “Today, we have the threat of rising inflation, a weaker dollar and interest rates that are already zero or negative.”</p>\n<p>Those predicting a new supercycle — often described as prolonged period of surging demand that outstrips supply — point to global recovery programmes that put greater emphasis on job creation and environmental sustainability than on inflation control.</p>\n<p>“The past decade has seen monetary policy, which was more supportive for financial assets, while current fiscal policy should be more supportive for real assets like commodities,” said Don Casturo, the founder of specialist asset manager Quantix Commodities.</p>\n<p>Commodity bulls also see a supply gap coming. Goldman reckons the energy transition has the potential to create $1tn-$2tn a year in infrastructure investment over the next decade as the world reduces its reliance on carbon. This is not only true of the oil industry, where investment had been slashed, but also mining.</p>\n<p>“There needs to be a price blowout to bring on the new supply,” said James Johnstone, co-head of emerging and frontier markets at&nbsp;RWC Partners, a London-based investment manager that has invested in a number of copper producers.</p>\n<p>Some doubt that this upswing in commodity prices can match the last.</p>\n<p>“Historically a supercycle happens every 30 to 40 years and we are just out of one. So this would be an exception,” said Norbert Rücker, head of economics at Swiss private bank Julius Baer. “And if you look at what triggered the last supercycle it was Chinese urbanisation and the immense spend of it. The ETF holds 30 stocks and is heavily concentrated, with Tilray Inc.,making up 13.7% of the portfolio and Aphria Inc.&nbsp;accounting for 13.4%. According to ETFMG, the ETF is designed to “measure the performance of companies within the cannabis ecosystem beneﬁtting from global medicinal and recreational cannabis legalization initiatives.” This broad objective means it holds shares of several large tobacco companies: Philip Morris International Inc.Altria Group Inc.&nbsp;and British American Tobacco.</li>\n <li>The AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF&nbsp;has $604 million in assets and annual expenses of 0.74%. AdvisorShares bills this ETF as the only one that is both actively managed and U.S.-focused.</li>\n <li>The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF&nbsp;has $583 million in assets and an expense ratio of 0.94%.</li>\n <li>The AdvisorShares Pure Cannabis ETF&nbsp;has $323 million in assets, with an annual expense ratio of 0.75%. It invests in companies that derive at least 50% of revenue from the cannabis industry, but may also invest in pre-revenue companies doing research and development on marijuana-derived products.</li>\n <li>The Global X Cannabis ETFPOTX,+17.23%has $149 million in assets with an expense ratio of 0.50%. It has a highly concentrated portfolio of 18 stocks, with Tilray making up 16.9% of the portfolio, Aphria 11.9% and Aurora Cannabis Inc.&nbsp;10.2%.</li>\n <li>The Cannabis ETF&nbsp;has $117 million in assets with annual expenses of 0.70%. The ETF holds a broad group of 29 U.S. and Canadian marijuana stocks.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The only stock held by all six ETFs is Charlotte’s Web Holdings Inc..The company is based in Boulder, Colo., but all six ETFs hold shares traded under its Canadian ticker, CWEB.</p>\n<p>Analysts favorite marijuana stocks</p>\n<p>The six ETFs listed above hold 85 stocks or total return swaps tied to the stocks. A few of these companies are “double counted,” with one or more ETFs holding shares traded in Canada and one or more holding the shares traded on U.S. exchanges. In the table below, the tickers without an exchange code before them, are U.S. tickers.</p>\n<p>The list includes countries where the companies are based. The share prices and price targets are in local currencies. Tobacco companies are not excluded, because the managers of the ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (at least) believe they will benefit from the expanding regulatory acceptance of recreational marijuana use.</p>\n<p>Among the 85 stocks, 28 have majority “buy” or equivalent ratings among analysts polled by FactSet, with at least five analysts covering each company. Recent coverage includes efforts by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to introduce legislation for the federal legalization of marijuana and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s drive toward legalization in his state.\nTo see how dramatic the stock market reaction has been, take a look at this chart for the ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETFMJ,+13.42%,the largest exchange traded fund in the space:\nFACTSET\nOf note: That’s a year-to-date chart through 2:34 p.m. ET on Feb. 9. The ETF has doubled so far in 2021. During 2020, it fell 12%.\nFor an example of the heated action, shares of Canopy Growth Corp. were up as much as 12% in morning trading on Feb. 9, after the company announced higher-than-expected salesfor the quarter ended Dec. 31.\nMarijuana stock list\nIn order to come up with a list of analysts’ favorite marijuana-associated stocks, we collated the holdings of six of the largest marijuana ETFs:\n\nThe ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF has $1.8 billion in assets under management and annual expenses of 0.75% of assets. The ETF holds 30 stocks and is heavily concentrated, with Tilray Inc.,making up 13.7% of the portfolio and Aphria Inc. accounting for 13.4%. According to ETFMG, the ETF is designed to “measure the performance of companies within the cannabis ecosystem beneﬁtting from global medicinal and recreational cannabis legalization initiatives.” This broad objective means it holds shares of several large tobacco companies: Philip Morris International Inc.Altria Group Inc. and British American Tobacco.\nThe AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF has $604 million in assets and annual expenses of 0.74%. AdvisorShares bills this ETF as the only one that is both actively managed and U.S.-focused.\nThe Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF has $583 million in assets and an expense ratio of 0.94%.\nThe AdvisorShares Pure Cannabis ETF has $323 million in assets, with an annual expense ratio of 0.75%. It invests in companies that derive at least 50% of revenue from the cannabis industry, but may also invest in pre-revenue companies doing research and development on marijuana-derived products.\nThe Global X Cannabis ETFPOTX,+17.23%has $149 million in assets with an expense ratio of 0.50%. It has a highly concentrated portfolio of 18 stocks, with Tilray making up 16.9% of the portfolio, Aphria 11.9% and Aurora Cannabis Inc. 10.2%.\nThe Cannabis ETF has $117 million in assets with annual expenses of 0.70%. The ETF holds a broad group of 29 U.S. and Canadian marijuana stocks.\n\nThe only stock held by all six ETFs is Charlotte’s Web Holdings Inc..The company is based in Boulder, Colo., but all six ETFs hold shares traded under its Canadian ticker, CWEB.\nAnalysts favorite marijuana stocks\nThe six ETFs listed above hold 85 stocks or total return swaps tied to the stocks. A few of these companies are “double counted,” with one or more ETFs holding shares traded in Canada and one or more holding the shares traded on U.S. exchanges. In the table below, the tickers without an exchange code before them, are U.S. tickers.\nThe list includes countries where the companies are based. The share prices and price targets are in local currencies. These are the lessons you must know before you ever get involved in the stock or options market (or if you are holding a winning stock or option):</p>\n<p><b>1. Don’t sell stocks or options on products you don’t own:</b>The traders who lost the most money in GameStop and AMC were those who sold “naked” calls and puts (i.e. they sold options on stocks they didn’t own), or those who sold shares short (again, they sold shares on a stock they didn’t own). When using this extremely risky strategy, you can make a fortune if you’re right. If you’re wrong, the losses can be incalculable. In reality, some unwary traders lost tens of thousands of dollars last week on positions that cost a few thousand dollars. Once again, don’t sell anything naked unless you’re a professional, and in this case even the pros lost big on that risky bet.</p>\n<p><b>2. Sell at the “zero point.”</b>&nbsp; Here’s a rule I created: If you have huge gains that disappear and you are at the zero point (i.e. break-even), sell before you have real losses. It’s better to walk away at zero than with losses.</p>\n<p><b>3. Don’t be a stubborn seller:</b>Why is it so hard for most traders to walk away at the zero point? Stubbornness. Many traders made huge gains last week only to watch those profits disappear. They refused to sell because they hoped to make their money back. If holding options, that’s not going to happen. (If you bought at or near the high, your money is gone. If you hold a stock, plan to wait months or even years to recover. Stubborn stockholders often end up as “stuckholders.”</p>\n<p><b>4. Take the money and run:</b>When you are holding a stock or option position that brings outsized profits, either sell half of your holding or all of it — but get out. I call this “selling at extremes.” Sell something when the profits are beyond your wildest expectations. We all know the story of the gambler who wins big at the casino, but doesn’t leave the table until all his money is gone. Know when to walk away from the computer. Don’t expect this trading frenzy to keep happening:</b>It’s possible that a group of traders on the Reddit forum will band together for more bear- or bull raids. Except Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Fed Chair Jerome Powell are most likely creating new rules to prevent this from repeating. The Fed hates volatility and will do everything in its power to keep the markets calm. So once again, when you make big money on a trade, take the money as fast as you can — because you may not get the chance again.</p>\n<p><b>7. Stop bragging about how much money you made</b>: Many traders who won big immediately bragged on social media (and to their jealous friends) about how much money they made on this trade. Yet the euphoric feeling they had was temporary. It usually goes away after all the money is gone. The smart (and polite) traders took their gains and kept the win to themselves</p>\n<p><b>8. Use a time stop:</b>Time stops are not well-known or popular, but with fast-moving stocks (or when trading options), they are invaluable. In an extremely fast market, the traditional stop-limit order won’t get filled, as many of those meme-stock traders found out the hard way. During 2020, it fell 12%.</p>\n<p>For an example of the heated action, shares of Canopy Growth Corp.&nbsp;were up as much as 12% in morning trading on Feb. 9, after the company announced&nbsp;higher-than-expected salesfor the quarter ended Dec. 31.</p>\n<p><b>Marijuana stock list</b></p>\n<p>In order to come up with a list of analysts’ favorite marijuana-associated stocks, we collated the holdings of six of the largest marijuana ETFs:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>The ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF has $1.8 billion in assets under management and annual expenses of 0.75% of assets. The ETF holds 30 stocks and is heavily concentrated, with Tilray Inc.,making up 13.7% of the portfolio and Aphria Inc.&nbsp;accounting for 13.4%. According to ETFMG, the ETF is designed to “measure the performance of companies within the cannabis ecosystem beneﬁtting from global medicinal and recreational cannabis legalization initiatives.” This broad objective means it holds shares of several large tobacco companies: Philip Morris International Inc.Altria Group Inc.&nbsp;and British American Tobacco.</li>\n <li>The AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF&nbsp;has $604 million in assets and annual expenses of 0.74%. AdvisorShares bills this ETF as the only one that is both actively managed and U.S.-focused.</li>\n <li>The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF&nbsp;has $583 million in assets and an expense ratio of 0.94%.</li>\n <li>The AdvisorShares Pure Cannabis ETF&nbsp;has $323 million in assets, with an annual expense ratio of 0.75%. It invests in companies that derive at least 50% of revenue from the cannabis industry, but may also invest in pre-revenue companies doing research and development on marijuana-derived products.</li>\n <li>The Global X Cannabis ETFPOTX,+17.23%has $149 million in assets with an expense ratio of 0.50%. It has a highly concentrated portfolio of 18 stocks, with Tilray making up 16.9% of the portfolio, Aphria 11.9% and Aurora Cannabis Inc.&nbsp;10.2%.</li>\n <li>The Cannabis ETF&nbsp;has $117 million in assets with annual expenses of 0.70%. The ETF holds a broad group of 29 U.S. and Canadian marijuana stocks.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The only stock held by all six ETFs is Charlotte’s Web Holdings Inc..The company is based in Boulder, Colo., but all six ETFs hold shares traded under its Canadian ticker, CWEB.</p>\n<p>Analysts favorite marijuana stocks</p>\n<p>The six ETFs listed above hold 85 stocks or total return swaps tied to the stocks. A few of these companies are “double counted,” with one or more ETFs holding shares traded in Canada and one or more holding the shares traded on U.S. exchanges. In the table below, the tickers without an exchange code before them, are U.S. tickers.</p>\n<p>The list includes countries where the companies are based. The share prices and price targets are in local currencies. Tobacco companies are not excluded, because the managers of the ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (at least) believe they will benefit from the expanding regulatory acceptance of recreational marijuana use.</p>\n<p>Among the 85 stocks, 28 have majority “buy” or equivalent ratings among analysts polled by FactSet, with at least five analysts covering each company. But investors also like to see lists of stocks in rapidly growing industries.\nSo, below, is a list of analysts’ favorite stocks associated with the increased use of cannabis, drawn from holdings of six of the largest ETFs tracking the industry.\nFor broad coverage of the rapidly expanding marijuana industry, see Cannabis Watch. Recent coverage includes efforts by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to introduce legislation for the federal legalization of marijuana and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s drive toward legalization in his state.\nTo see how dramatic the stock market reaction has been, take a look at this chart for the ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETFMJ,+13.42%,the largest exchange traded fund in the space:\nFACTSET\nOf note: That’s a year-to-date chart through 2:34 p.m. ET on Feb. 9. The ETF has doubled so far in 2021. During 2020, it fell 12%.\nFor an example of the heated action, shares of Canopy Growth Corp. were up as much as 12% in morning trading on Feb. 9, after the company announced higher-than-expected salesfor the quarter ended Dec. 31.\nMarijuana stock list\nIn order to come up with a list of analysts’ favorite marijuana-associated stocks, we collated the holdings of six of the largest marijuana ETFs:\n\nThe ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF has $1.8 billion in assets under management and annual expenses of 0.75% of assets. The ETF holds 30 stocks and is heavily concentrated, with Tilray Inc.,making up 13.7% of the portfolio and Aphria Inc. accounting for 13.4%. According to ETFMG, the ETF is designed to “measure the performance of companies within the cannabis ecosystem beneﬁtting from global medicinal and recreational cannabis legalization initiatives.” This broad objective means it holds shares of several large tobacco companies: Philip Morris International Inc.Altria Group Inc. and British American Tobacco.\nThe AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF has $604 million in assets and annual expenses of 0.74%. AdvisorShares bills this ETF as the only one that is both actively managed and U.S.-focused.\nThe Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF has $583 million in assets and an expense ratio of 0.94%.\nThe AdvisorShares Pure Cannabis ETF has $323 million in assets, with an annual expense ratio of 0.75%. It invests in companies that derive at least 50% of revenue from the cannabis industry, but may also invest in pre-revenue companies doing research and development on marijuana-derived products.\nThe Global X Cannabis ETFPOTX,+17.23%has $149 million in assets with an expense ratio of 0.50%. It has a highly concentrated portfolio of 18 stocks, with Tilray making up 16.9% of the portfolio, Aphria 11.9% and Aurora Cannabis Inc. 10.2%.\nThe Cannabis ETF has $117 million in assets with annual expenses of 0.70%. The ETF holds a broad group of 29 U.S. and Canadian marijuana stocks.\n\nThe only stock held by all six ETFs is Charlotte’s Web Holdings Inc..The company is based in Boulder, Colo., but all six ETFs hold shares traded under its Canadian ticker, CWEB.\nAnalysts favorite marijuana stocks\nThe six ETFs listed above hold 85 stocks or total return swaps tied to the stocks. A few of these companies are “double counted,” with one or more ETFs holding shares traded in Canada and one or more holding the shares traded on U.S. exchanges. In the table below, the tickers without an exchange code before them, are U.S. tickers.\nThe list includes countries where the companies are based. The share prices and price targets are in local currencies. Both are tilted toward large-cap, tech-oriented stocks.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average&nbsp;was positive, while the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;was off 0.8%.</p><p>The rise in yields is being blamed in large part on expectations for a potential surge in inflation thanks to ramped up government spending and ultraloose monetary policy. Fears that the Federal Reserve could move to begin withdrawing some liquidity sooner than anticipated is seen helping to unsettle stocks, analysts said.</p><p>But Adam argued that inflation not only is unlikely to “short circuit” the rally, it may be a welcome development for stock-market bulls.</p><p>“When analyzing how the S&amp;P 500 performed under varying levels of core inflation, equities performed above-average in an environment where core inflation was between 1-4%,” he wrote.</p><p>Inflation at those levels is generally considered healthy when it coincides with improving economic activity, Adam said. The reason is because companies have pricing power, allowing them to lift prices, while also reaping the benefits from productivity gains, which helps to boost earnings growth.</p><p>Raymond James expects core inflation to be around 2%. He’s really caught between a rock and a hard place.”What’s got the market’s attention recently has been a pickup in government bond yields, particularly further out on the curve.While the 2-year is unchanged for 2021, the 5-year has risen nearly a quarter percentage point as of Friday’s market close while the benchmark 10-year note has seen its yield jump 41 basis points to 1.34%, an area where it hasn’t been since around the same time in 2020, before the worst of the pandemic struck.The 30-year bond yield has surged even more, leaping nearly half a point this year to 2.14%.Powell’s dilemma is this: Rising bond yields could be signaling the reflation of the economy that the Fed has been pushing and are therefore higher for good reasons. However, should the trend get out of control, the Fed then might have to tighten policy faster than the market expects, offsetting some of the good that has come with the burst in yields.Complicating the matter is that markets also might not like it if Powell is overly complacent.“If this testimony was behind closed doors, I think Jay Powell would be quite pleased with what he sees in the economy and the markets,” Sheets said, using the Fed chair’s nickname. “But given that it’s public, he’s got to be careful. If he’s too sanguine about the rise in rates, the markets are going to take that as a significant green light for rates to rip higher.”“The Fed is comfortable with an organic rise in rates reflecting shifts in views on growth and inflation,” he added. “But I think the Fed also wants to be careful that it doesn’t create and amplify a self-sustaining dynamic that pushes rates higher for other reasons.”Those “other reasons” primarily would be fears that the economy could overheat.Stimulus and more stimulusThe Fed has run historically loose policy for the past year, dropping its benchmark borrowing rate to near zero and buying at least $120 billion of bonds each month. That’s on top of a series of since-expired lending and liquidity programs implemented in the early days of the Covid-19 crisis.Along with that, Congress has come in with more than $3 trillion of fiscal stimulus and could approve up to $1.9 trillion more by the end of week.All that has transpired amid an economy that, besides a still-troubling employment problem primarily in the service sector, is humming. Wall Street is taking up first-quarter growth expectations and market-based indicators of inflation are rising.That’s why Powell’s tightrope walk this week will be all the more compelling.“The market mood has changed,”Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor at Allianz, said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” It’s no longer whether yields are going higher, it’s when is the move too big.
