Is Las Vegas Sands now a value stock that will benefit from an economic recovery, or is this a company that the gambling world has passed by? That'll be important to note as we talk about the company's future.</p><h2>The pandemic was a disaster</h2><p>No matter how you look at it, the pandemic has been a disaster for Las Vegas Sands. And the company is selling its Las Vegas properties for $6.25 billion, so in the future, it will be 100% reliant on Asia when that deal is closed.</p><p>Relying on Asia can be a double-edged sword for casino operators. The market is extremely big and very profitable when operations are going well, but operators are also at the whim of government regulations and restrictions. Macao has gone through ups and downs depending on how open China's visas are to the region. Singapore pushed through a higher tax rate even after Las Vegas Sands committed to spending $3.3 billion to expand Marina Bay Sands.</p><p>If Macao and Singapore gambling returns to 2019 levels sometime late this year or early next year, it would be great for gambling operations, but there's no guarantee that will happen, and we could see a very slow recovery in some countries where vaccine roll-outs aren't going as fast as they are in the U.S.</p><h2>Missing out on internet gambling</h2><p>One of the bigger mistakes late CEO Sheldon Adelson made was fighting online gambling in the U.S. Las Vegas Sands didn't just fail to invest in the booming business; it actively fought its legalization. That puts the company well behind competitors.</p><p>In 2020, online gambling reached $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion in gross gambling revenue in the U.S, according to H2 Gambling Capital, making up 20% of the market. Revenue is expected to grow rapidly as sports betting and iGaming are expanded across the U.S. with some expecting revenue to more than double. Las Vegas Sands may miss the boat entirely.</p><h2>Is there any value in Las Vegas Sands?</h2><p>At today's stock price, Las Vegas Sands' enterprise value (EV) is $59.9 billion, not much lower than it was at the end of 2019 despite the pandemic.</p><p>Even if we disregard the sale of Las Vegas operations, it'll be very difficult for Las Vegas Sands to return to the 11.3 EV/EBITDA multiple by the end of 2021. If Asian gamblers don't return in droves, the company may not reach 2019 EBITDA levels for years.</p><p>As we've seen, real growth in the gambling industry is in online gambling. What I'm most worried about is that Las Vegas Sands has no presence in that business. That led high beta names to lag in the latter half. But what strategy or selection of stocks would have served you best for the month?</li>\n</ul>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e8fb5e2cc1f94dd1e56cfa3805a032c\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"474\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>High beta stocks lagged more stable names toward month-end</i></p>\n<ul>\n <li>The exogenous events described above can throw a wrench into any defined strategy, whether you’re a value or growth investor, play momentum, sentiment, technicals or earnings revisions, or just buy what you know. What explicit strategy would have told you to be long Hartford Financial(NYSE:HIG), Nucor(NYSE:NUE)or Kansas City Southern(NYSE:KSU), and either short or unexposed to Penn National, Discovery Inc.(NASDAQ:DISCA)and Viacom(NASDAQ:VIAC), the respective winners and losers in the S&amp;P 500 in March?</li>\n <li>The answer for the above six is insider trading, which we do not condone for obvious reasons.M&amp;A(twice), aboveconsensus earnings,political uncertaintyandhedge fund implosionsdictated the above fortunes and misfortunes.</li>\n <li>But to outperform the broader market, the answer this month was value investing. So much so, thatone fascinating aspect of Marchwas how the standard “value stocks” started to screen as “momentum” – those stocks that have registered the strongest performance over the past 12 months. Value, in fact, has been so strong, that the last time they screened as momentum was more than 5 years ago.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4b8f03b27e94be3c947993777fe46d91\" tg-width=\"537\" tg-height=\"192\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<ul>\n <li>And it’s not just March. Value is the best performing factor strategy this year, up nearly 20%. It narrowly beat the performance of the highest levered stocks – those with the highest ratio of debt/total assets – curious bedfellows.</li>\n <li>Value itself is not a monolith. It comes in varying forms. For March, a strategy whereby you long stocks in the highest quartile for Ebitda/Enterprise ratios and short those in the lowest quartile returned more than 9%.&nbsp; However, that same strategy in March of last year was the 3rd-worst performing among the 30 factors covered by S&amp;P Global, which could mean some old-fashion mean reversion could have been at play after years of underperformance in the value category.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a753605a6759d9162a39c2c29cbb5763\" tg-width=\"906\" tg-height=\"424\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>Source: S&amp;P Global</i></p>\n<ul>\n <li>We looked at some specific stocks that performed well, just using the Seeking Alphascreener paired with our proprietary Quant ratings, which happen to have atrack record of outperformancesince inception in 2010. We screened for stocks in the U.S., with more than $500 million market cap, a value rating of A or greater that screened with a bullish or very bullish quant rating.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/92f4e08c81e69bcc72ab4bbe4b6d3386\" tg-width=\"1084\" tg-height=\"472\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<ul>\n <li>The top 5 performing names in March that screened in the above criteria at the beginning of March registered more than 15% returns in the month, led by TimkenSteel(NYSE:TMST)at 40%, Amneal Pharma(NYSE:AMRX), Resideo Technologies(NYSE:REZI), Super Micro Computer(NASDAQ:SMCI)and Jabil(NYSE:JBL). That compares to the S&amp;P ‘s 4.26% return.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0b1888173c43e95e5960c33d68bbb0fc\" tg-width=\"578\" tg-height=\"660\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Of note, 3 of the 12 highest performing names were homebuilders, though their ratings weren’t lifted to a bullish rating until a third of the month had passed. One, Green Brick(NASDAQ:GRBK), was featured among the best value picks by Seeking Alpha's&nbsp;head of quantitative strategies, Steven Cress, in his September discussionabout how many value names screened better than mega-cap tech, like Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT)and Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL).</li>\n <li>Beyond picking individual stocks, allocating to ETFs that focused on this strategy would have yielded an approximate 6.3% return, outperforming the S&amp;P 500(SP500)by 200bps. The largest value ETFs, found viaSA’s ETF screener,include Vanguard Value ETF(NYSEARCA:VTV), iShares S&amp;P 500 value ETF(NYSEARCA:IVE)&nbsp; and SPDR Portfolio S&amp;P 500 value ETF(NYSEARCA:SPYV), with performance across the instruments of 6.3% during March. That compared with the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF&nbsp;(NYSEARCA:VOO)up 2.75% on the month.</li>\n</ul>\n<ul>\n <li>Another value ETF, the iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF(NYSEARCA:IWD), lagged at 4.9%. Hamstringing its performance was likely the higher concentration in tech, which was impacted by the aforementioned treasury selloff this month. Higher interest rates hit growth names particularly hard. Compared to VTV, which boasts 3x more of a concentration in financials than in tech, IWD is nearer to 2x. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose just 0.4% in March. The Invesco QQQ ETF(NASDAQ:QQQ), which tracks large cap tech, was down 1.6% on the month.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The Future</p>\n<ul>\n <li>And how does that set up for April? Something to consider is seasonality --not surprising given the beginning of earnings season in just two weeks, which may set the tone. It is also bullish: Since 1928, April is the second-best month of average returns of the year, BofA analysts wrote this week.</li>\n <li>And on a shorter-term horizon, there is seasonality intra-month. The analysts also surfaced research that the first 10 days of each month typically outperform the last 10. That pattern for January-March has already held. But for April more broadly, LPL Financial’s Ryan Detrick highlighted that in the last 15 years, the S&amp;P 500 has closed higher in 14 of those 15 Aprils.</li>\n <li>That isn’t to say that value specifically will outperform, but it speaks broadly to market and portfolio performance. That led high beta names to lag in the latter half. But what strategy or selection of stocks would have served you best for the month?\n\n\nHigh beta stocks lagged more stable names toward month-end\n\nThe exogenous events described above can throw a wrench into any defined strategy, whether you’re a value or growth investor, play momentum, sentiment, technicals or earnings revisions, or just buy what you know. What explicit strategy would have told you to be long Hartford Financial(NYSE:HIG), Nucor(NYSE:NUE)or Kansas City Southern(NYSE:KSU), and either short or unexposed to Penn National, Discovery Inc.(NASDAQ:DISCA)and Viacom(NASDAQ:VIAC), the respective winners and losers in the S&P 500 in March?\nThe answer for the above six is insider trading, which we do not condone for obvious reasons.M&A(twice), aboveconsensus earnings,political uncertaintyandhedge fund implosionsdictated the above fortunes and misfortunes.\nBut to outperform the broader market, the answer this month was value investing. So much so, thatone fascinating aspect of Marchwas how the standard “value stocks” started to screen as “momentum” – those stocks that have registered the strongest performance over the past 12 months. Value, in fact, has been so strong, that the last time they screened as momentum was more than 5 years ago.\n\n\n\nAnd it’s not just March. Value is the best performing factor strategy this year, up nearly 20%. It narrowly beat the performance of the highest levered stocks – those with the highest ratio of debt/total assets – curious bedfellows.\nValue itself is not a monolith. It comes in varying forms. For March, a strategy whereby you long stocks in the highest quartile for Ebitda/Enterprise ratios and short those in the lowest quartile returned more than 9%.  However, that same strategy in March of last year was the 3rd-worst performing among the 30 factors covered by S&P Global, which could mean some old-fashion mean reversion could have been at play after years of underperformance in the value category.\n\n\nSource: S&P Global\n\nWe looked at some specific stocks that performed well, just using the Seeking Alphascreener paired with our proprietary Quant ratings, which happen to have atrack record of outperformancesince inception in 2010. We screened for stocks in the U.S., with more than $500 million market cap, a value rating of A or greater that screened with a bullish or very bullish quant rating.\n\n\n\nThe top 5 performing names in March that screened in the above criteria at the beginning of March registered more than 15% returns in the month, led by TimkenSteel(NYSE:TMST)at 40%, Amneal Pharma(NYSE:AMRX), Resideo Technologies(NYSE:REZI), Super Micro Computer(NASDAQ:SMCI)and Jabil(NYSE:JBL). That compares to the S&P ‘s 4.26% return.\n\n\n\nOf note, 3 of the 12 highest performing names were homebuilders, though their ratings weren’t lifted to a bullish rating until a third of the month had passed. One, Green Brick(NASDAQ:GRBK), was featured among the best value picks by Seeking Alpha's head of quantitative strategies, Steven Cress, in his September discussionabout how many value names screened better than mega-cap tech, like Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT)and Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL).\nBeyond picking individual stocks, allocating to ETFs that focused on this strategy would have yielded an approximate 6.3% return, outperforming the S&P 500(SP500)by 200bps. The largest value ETFs, found viaSA’s ETF screener,include Vanguard Value ETF(NYSEARCA:VTV), iShares S&P 500 value ETF(NYSEARCA:IVE)  and SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 value ETF(NYSEARCA:SPYV), with performance across the instruments of 6.3% during March. That compared with the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEARCA:VOO)up 2.75% on the month.\n\n\nAnother value ETF, the iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF(NYSEARCA:IWD), lagged at 4.9%. Hamstringing its performance was likely the higher concentration in tech, which was impacted by the aforementioned treasury selloff this month. Higher interest rates hit growth names particularly hard. Compared to VTV, which boasts 3x more of a concentration in financials than in tech, IWD is nearer to 2x. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose just 0.4% in March. The Invesco QQQ ETF(NASDAQ:QQQ), which tracks large cap tech, was down 1.6% on the month.\n\nThe Future\n\nAnd how does that set up for April? Something to consider is seasonality --not surprising given the beginning of earnings season in just two weeks, which may set the tone. It is also bullish: Since 1928, April is the second-best month of average returns of the year, BofA analysts wrote this week.\nAnd on a shorter-term horizon, there is seasonality intra-month. The analysts also surfaced research that the first 10 days of each month typically outperform the last 10. That pattern for January-March has already held. But for April more broadly, LPL Financial’s Ryan Detrick highlighted that in the last 15 years, the S&P 500 has closed higher in 14 of those 15 Aprils.\nThat isn’t to say that value specifically will outperform, but it speaks broadly to market and portfolio performance. PayPal’s market value is now $359 billion.Mastercard‘s equity, meanwhile, was worth $339 billion at recent prices around $341.</p>\n<p>Mastercard (MA) andVisa(V), the two major card-processing networks, have been hurt by a slowdown in payment volumes related to the pandemic, particularly in highly profitable cross-border transactions. Both stocks are down around 4% this year and are largely flat over the past 52 weeks.</p>\n<p>PayPal, on the other hand, got a lift as the pandemic sent shoppers online and fueled a surge in digital payments. The company is also developing new revenue streams, aiming to become a digital payments “super app,” expanding into everything from Bitcoin to in-store QR-codes, international money transfers, and new peer-to-peer (P2P) services.</p>\n<p>PayPal outlined its five-year strategy in a presentation to investors last week. And some analysts were clearly impressed. Lisa Ellis of MoffettNathanson raised her price target on the stock to $350, reflecting a variety of sources of growth.</p>\n<p>Just about every facet of the business may bepoisedto double over the next five years. PayPal expects to have 750 million active accounts by 2025, up from 377 million now. It sees total payments volume expanding at a 25% annualized rate, reaching $2.8 trillion by 2025.&nbsp; Revenues are expected to hit more than $50 billion, up from an estimated $25.6 billion this year.</p>\n<p>PayPal also expects to boost adjusted operating margins from 25% to 28%, and sees earnings per share rising an average 22% a year. It’s planning to generate $40 billion in free cash flow over the next five years, targeting 30% to 40% for share repurchases.</p>\n<p>As Ellis points out, PayPal has several stepping stones to hit those targets. One is a new service called Buy Now Pay Later, an interest-free installment plan for consumer purchases. The service is gaining traction, with $750 million of transaction volume in the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>Anothergrowth driveris cryptocurrencies. PayPal users can now buy and store Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on its app. The company aims to allow crypto to be used as a funding source with the 28 million merchants on its platform, acting as a middleman between consumers and businesses. Bitcoinhit a record$50,000 on Tuesday, up 75% this year, and it appears to be driving greater usage of PayPal, which could ultimately lead to higher average revenue per customer.</p>\n<p>PayPal also aims to use its Venmo P2P service as a platform for consumer-to-business payments. And PayPal is making inroads with brick-and-mortar merchants through QR technology for contactless payments in stores.</p>\n<p>Does all of this warrant a higher market value and a steep premium to Mastercard stock? The card network is actually expected to lift revenue and profits at a faster pace in fiscal 2021, according to Ellis, growing revenue 21.7% versus 19% for PayPal. She also sees Mastercard’s earnings per share rising 33.3% versus 17.5% for PayPal’s.</p>\n<p>But the five-year outlook is clearly more favorable for PayPal, with revenue rising 21% a year, compared with 15% for Mastercard, and earnings compounding at a 22% rate, versus 17% for Mastercard.</p>\n<p>The question is whether PayPal’s valuation is getting too rich. At 67 times estimated 2021 per-share earnings, PayPal stock is trading nearly three times more expensive than the S&amp;P 500’s P/E ratio of 23 times earnings. Mastercard goes for 42 times 2021 earnings.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Wall Street can’t seem to catch up with PayPal’s fast-rising stock. Both stocks are down around 4% this year and are largely flat over the past 52 weeks.\nPayPal, on the other hand, got a lift as the pandemic sent shoppers online and fueled a surge in digital payments. The company is also developing new revenue streams, aiming to become a digital payments “super app,” expanding into everything from Bitcoin to in-store QR-codes, international money transfers, and new peer-to-peer (P2P) services.\nPayPal outlined its five-year strategy in a presentation to investors last week. And some analysts were clearly impressed. Lisa Ellis of MoffettNathanson raised her price target on the stock to $350, reflecting a variety of sources of growth.\nJust about every facet of the business may bepoisedto double over the next five years. PayPal expects to have 750 million active accounts by 2025, up from 377 million now. It sees total payments volume expanding at a 25% annualized rate, reaching $2.8 trillion by 2025.  Revenues are expected to hit more than $50 billion, up from an estimated $25.6 billion this year.\nPayPal also expects to boost adjusted operating margins from 25% to 28%, and sees earnings per share rising an average 22% a year. It’s planning to generate $40 billion in free cash flow over the next five years, targeting 30% to 40% for share repurchases.\nAs Ellis points out, PayPal has several stepping stones to hit those targets. One is a new service called Buy Now Pay Later, an interest-free installment plan for consumer purchases. The service is gaining traction, with $750 million of transaction volume in the fourth quarter.\nAnothergrowth driveris cryptocurrencies. PayPal users can now buy and store Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on its app. The company aims to allow crypto to be used as a funding source with the 28 million merchants on its platform, acting as a middleman between consumers and businesses. Bitcoinhit a record$50,000 on Tuesday, up 75% this year, and it appears to be driving greater usage of PayPal, which could ultimately lead to higher average revenue per customer.\nPayPal also aims to use its Venmo P2P service as a platform for consumer-to-business payments. And PayPal is making inroads with brick-and-mortar merchants through QR technology for contactless payments in stores.\nDoes all of this warrant a higher market value and a steep premium to Mastercard stock? The card network is actually expected to lift revenue and profits at a faster pace in fiscal 2021, according to Ellis, growing revenue 21.7% versus 19% for PayPal. She also sees Mastercard’s earnings per share rising 33.3% versus 17.5% for PayPal’s.\nBut the five-year outlook is clearly more favorable for PayPal, with revenue rising 21% a year, compared with 15% for Mastercard, and earnings compounding at a 22% rate, versus 17% for Mastercard.\nThe question is whether PayPal’s valuation is getting too rich. At 67 times estimated 2021 per-share earnings, PayPal stock is trading nearly three times more expensive than the S&P 500’s P/E ratio of 23 times earnings. Mastercard goes for 42 times 2021 earnings.\nNonetheless, Wall Street can’t seem to catch up with PayPal’s fast-rising stock. That'll be important to note as we talk about the company's future.</p><h2>The pandemic was a disaster</h2><p>No matter how you look at it, the pandemic has been a disaster for Las Vegas Sands. The company saw revenue drop nearly 75%, and EBITDA went negative.</p><p><img src=\"https://media.ycharts.com/charts/132bb8f99c55348febf8be9b64437e7f.png\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"435\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>LVS Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</p><p>While some casino companies have relied on the U.S. market, which hasn't been hit as hard as Asia, Las Vegas Sands was highly reliant on Asia, which has had many more restrictions due to COVID-19. And the company is selling its Las Vegas properties for $6.25 billion, so in the future, it will be 100% reliant on Asia when that deal is closed.</p><p>Relying on Asia can be a double-edged sword for casino operators. The market is extremely big and very profitable when operations are going well, but operators are also at the whim of government regulations and restrictions. Macao has gone through ups and downs depending on how open China's visas are to the region. Singapore pushed through a higher tax rate even after Las Vegas Sands committed to spending $3.3 billion to expand Marina Bay Sands.</p><p>If Macao and Singapore gambling returns to 2019 levels sometime late this year or early next year, it would be great for gambling operations, but there's no guarantee that will happen, and we could see a very slow recovery in some countries where vaccine roll-outs aren't going as fast as they are in the U.S.</p><h2>Missing out on internet gambling</h2><p>One of the bigger mistakes late CEO Sheldon Adelson made was fighting online gambling in the U.S. Las Vegas Sands didn't just fail to invest in the booming business; it actively fought its legalization. That puts the company well behind competitors.</p><p>In 2020, online gambling reached $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion in gross gambling revenue in the U.S, according to H2 Gambling Capital, making up 20% of the market. Revenue is expected to grow rapidly as sports betting and iGaming are expanded across the U.S. with some expecting revenue to more than double. Las Vegas Sands may miss the boat entirely.</p><h2>Is there any value in Las Vegas Sands?</h2><p>At today's stock price, Las Vegas Sands' enterprise value (EV) is $59.9 billion, not much lower than it was at the end of 2019 despite the pandemic.</p><p>Even if we disregard the sale of Las Vegas operations, it'll be very difficult for Las Vegas Sands to return to the 11.3 EV/EBITDA multiple by the end of 2021. If Asian gamblers don't return in droves, the company may not reach 2019 EBITDA levels for years.</p><p>As we've seen, real growth in the gambling industry is in online gambling. What I'm most worried about is that Las Vegas Sands has no presence in that business. In the fourth quarter,it had revenue of $12.7 billion, boosting the total for the year to $45.5 billion, up 29%. AWS ended 2020 with a backlog of $50 billion, 68% above the total a year earlier. The business has grown more than 475% since the end of 2015, and next-year sales will easily top $50 billion. Many cloud software companies—most of which wouldn’t exist without AWS—are trading for 20 times sales or higher. Apply that measure to AWS and the business is worth more than $1 trillion.</p>\n<p>Jassy has served as CEO of Amazon Web Services since its humble beginning, and he became the logical successor to Bezos after the recent retirement of Jeff Wilke, the longtime leader of the company's retail business.</p>\n<p>Taken together, there has been a lot of change for Amazon in a short period. Wilke’s successor, Dave Clark, has just settled into his new role. Jassy is getting the top job. Bezos is moving to executive chairman. And someone yet to be named will take over AWS.</p>\n<p>If there’s any reason for caution about Amazon, it would be a potential leadership vacuum at AWS just as competition in the cloud market is heating up.</p>\n<p>There are now real rivals for AWS, although the precise math is fuzzy.Alphabet(GOOGL) had $3.8 billion in cloud revenue in the quarter, up 47%, and the company said its Google Cloud Platform, which competes with AWS, grew even faster. But that segment also includes Google Workspace, which competes with Microsoft Office.</p>\n<p>Microsoft(MSFT) had“connected cloud” revenue of $16.7 billionin its latest completed quarter, but that includes more than just Azure, Microsoft’s direct rival to AWS. Microsoft also puts Office 365 and a cloud version of its Microsoft Dynamics enterprise application business in its cloud bucket.Oracle(ORCL) andIBM(IBM) also claim substantial cloud businesses. But Amazon remains the dominant player, and not by a little.</p>\n<p>There are several reasons that Amazon is unlikely to miss a beat through the CEO transition.</p>\n<p>First, as executive chairman, Bezos said he intends to spend time thinking about new products and early initiatives, where he has always thrived. “Keep inventing, and don’t despair when at first the idea looks crazy,” he wrote in a letter to Amazon employees last week. “Remember to wander. Let curiosity be your compass. It remains Day 1.” Bezos is the company’s largest investor, with a stake worth about $200 billion.</p>\n<p>Second, Jassy has been at Amazon for 23 years. It’s the only place where he’s worked since graduating from Harvard Business School in 1997. He has a strong reputation among Amazon watchers, Wall Street loves him, and Bezos trusts him. So, Jassy was the obvious choice.</p>\n<p>Finally, the transition is happening at a moment of strength for Amazon. In the fourth quarter, its sales were $125.6 billion, up 44% from the total a year earlier, blowing past Wall Street estimates. Profits of $14.09 a share in the latest quarter were nearly double analyst forecasts, even though the company spent more than $4 billion in the period to protect workers against Covid-19.</p>\n<p>Jassy was already running the most important part of Amazon. This is no longer an e-commerce company with a cloud computing hobby; AWS is now worth more than the retail segment.</p>\n<p>And yet it’s hard to separate Amazon from Bezos. The stock fell 2% on the transition news, despite being accompanied by the banner earnings results. Any weakness could be a buying opportunity.
