growth trends, but would be especially good buys if there's a market pullback.\n
\n
Key Points
\n
\n
Marvell Technology Group has transformed itself into a top data center supplier.
\n
Duolingo is a language app, but it has big education aspirations.
\n
Apple still has a big opportunity in China despite the recent troubles there.
\n
\n
Historically, the stock market crashes an average of once almost every two years (with a crash defined as a decline of 10% from highs). Stocks overall haven't suffered such a setback since the pandemic started a year and a half ago, so many investors worry that a 10% pullback is imminent.
\n
The historical average is just that, though: an average. There's no telling when the market will crash and what will ultimately cause it to temporarily fall in value. But a focus on quality companies riding economic growth trends will set you up for long-term success no matter what the stock market does. Three Fool.com contributors think Marvell Technology Group (NASDAQ:MRVL), Duolingo (NASDAQ:DUOL), and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) are great buys right now, and would be especially great pickups if the market falls in the next month.
\n
Doubling down on data center hardware
\n
Nicholas Rossolillo (Marvell Technology Group): Semiconductor designer Marvell is flying high this year -- and not just because of the global chip shortage. The company has made four major acquisitions since 2018, and a fifth one is currently pending. These takeovers have transformed Marvell's operations, reducing its reliance on consumer electronics and upping its game in data centers and 5G mobile networks.
\n
In fact, Marvell said on its last earnings call that data center sales (40% of revenue) are poised to grow for years to come. Marvell's product portfolio that spans data processing units (DPUs, the processors that manage the flow of data within a computing system) to optical and networking systems has helped Marvell increase its share of its customers' complex computing needs. And as cloud computing grows in importance in the decade ahead, Marvell is well positioned to grow.
\n
There are risks, however, as Marvell integrates its various new chip design subsidiaries. But the semiconductor company is already realizing positive results. Net losses were $276 million in the last quarter on revenue of $1.08 billion, but on an adjusted basis the company generated a robust $284 million profit. The non-adjusted and adjusted bottom-line results will converge over time as the amortized costs of the acquisitions are digested.
\n
At the end of the day, though, this is a top chip stock for the cloud computing age. The stock is up 140% since the start of 2020, and while I still like it for the long haul, I'd be really happy to load up on a lot more if it pulled back in price from all-time highs. Data centers are at the heart of modern business operations these days, and Marvell is helping make it happen.
\n

\n
\n
Buy, compra, kaufe, achetez, köp Duolingo on the dips
\n
Anders Bylund (Duolingo): Language tutoring specialist Duolingo is off to the races. The stock has gained a market-stomping 46% since joining the public stock market at the end of July. Trading at a lofty 37 times trailing sales with negative earnings and cash flows, Duolingo is a value investor's worst nightmare right now.
\n
This little company is going places. I'm already a happy Duolingo shareholder and I'd be first in line to boost my holdings if another marketwide flight from high-priced growth stocks drags the stock back down. In fact, I might soon add a few shares to my holdings even if Duolingo stays aloft.
\n
The language training platform you see today is only the beginning of a much larger ambition. Duolingo founders Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker started the service with the vision that \"free education will really change the world.\" That aspiration came first and the business opportunity followed much later, when von Ahn saw that voluntary donations and his MacArthur Genius Grant wouldn't be enough to let Duolingo change the world on a meaningful scale.
\n
Foreign languages provide a solid training ground for Duolingo's online tutoring services in a more general sense, eventually paving the way for launches of similar services for subjects such as math, physics, history, and underwater basket weaving. Developing this grand vision will take years -- and it should be well worth the effort.
\n
The global market for online learning services added up to a $226 billion revenue opportunity in 2020. Duolingo collected top-line sales of just $208 million over the last four quarters, which works out to a 0.1% slice of the addressable market. The long-term growth opportunity is massive.
\n
Furthermore, Duolingo is well equipped to make the most of this opening. It posted 47% year-over-year revenue growth in the company's first quarterly earnings report, and the balance sheet is squeaky clean with $115 million of cash reserves and just $8 million in long-term debts. It would take more than a temporary market storm to bring this company down.
\n
So take advantage of lower prices if and when Duolingo's stock is dragged down by the next market panic. The company is poised to spread its wings and fly. If the lofty valuation is the only thing holding you back, you should be prepared to take action on the inevitable dips along the way.
\n
A downturn in China could bring an opportunity in Apple
\n
Billy Duberstein (Apple): iPhone giant Apple could get hit hard by a global market sell-off, especially if the Evergrande crisis causes a recession in China. Last quarter, China accounted for more than 18% of Apple's revenue, and a broader China recession could also cause a global slowdown outside the U.S., especially with China's other trading partners in Europe and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region.
\n
Of course, the last time Apple's stock was hit by Chinese worries was in late 2018 and early 2019. That proved to be a tremendous buying opportunity. In fact, Apple's stock has more than tripled off of that January 2019 bottom.
\n

\n
Data by YCharts.
\n
That's because while iPhone sales can be inconsistent and lumpy, over the long run, Apple's revenue should grow. Eventually, customers need to update their phones, even if they hold off during difficult economic times, and Apple users are generally incredibly loyal. The Apple device installed base continues to grow every quarter, and management has successfully grown its services business, which has much more recurring revenue, to about 21.4% of total revenue as of last quarter.
\n
It's true that Apple trades at a much higher earnings multiple than it did prior to 2020, and so its stock still has the possibility to fall significantly if the market gets scared. Yet its 28.5 P/E ratio today is still reasonable when considering its near-$200 billion cash pile, which should insulate this safe stock from any significant long-term danger.
\n
And while Apple is primarily known for the iPhone and its various computing devices, it will also spend over $20 billion in research and development this year as it continues to innovate. Apple is likely to extend its brand power into future products and services going forward, such as healthcare, AR/VR, autonomous systems and vehicles, and others. Even recent new endeavors, such as Apple's controversial foray into streaming, could surprise to the upside. After all, the Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso cleaned up at this year's Emmy awards. That's the fastest any new streaming service has won the Emmy for best show. Therefore, investors shouldn't discount Apple becoming a more formidable force in streaming TV, either.
\n
Basically, Apple is a cash-gushing, safe stock that still has a history of correcting in large market sell-offs. Given its consumer staple-like resilience and potential for future innovation, it's a prime target for investors should the market swoon.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Stocks We're Ready to Buy if the Market Crashes This Month
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Stocks We're Ready to Buy if the Market Crashes This Month\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-27 11:57 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
These tech stocks are riding secular growth trends, but would be especially good buys if there's a market pullback.\n\nKey Points\n\nMarvell Technology Group has transformed itself into a top data center ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"DUOL":"多邻国","AAPL":"苹果"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/09/26/3-stocks-were-ready-to-buy-if-the-market-crashes-t/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2170108956","content_text":"These tech stocks are riding secular growth trends, but would be especially good buys if there's a market pullback.\n\nKey Points\n\nMarvell Technology Group has transformed itself into a top data center supplier.\nDuolingo is a language app, but it has big education aspirations.\nApple still has a big opportunity in China despite the recent troubles there.\n\nHistorically, the stock market crashes an average of once almost every two years (with a crash defined as a decline of 10% from highs). The blue-chip index logged a seventh straight day of gains in its longest winning streak since August 2020. The Nasdaq also hit all-time intraday and closing highs, and the Dow gained to set its first record high since May 7. Shares of Tesla (TSLA) fluctuated before ending slightly higher after the electric car-maker's second-quarter deliveries hit a new record but still missed analysts' estimates, based on Bloomberg consensus data.
\n
Investorsconsidered the U.S. Labor Department's June jobs report, the central economic data point that came out this week. The print showed a stronger-than-anticipated acceleration in hiring, with non-farm payrolls rising by 850,000 for a sixth straight monthly gain. The unemployment rate, however, unexpectedly ticked up slightly to 5.9%.
\n
\"This is the 'Goldilocks report' that the market was looking for today. The blue-chip index logged a seventh straight day of gains in its longest winning streak since August 2020. The Nasdaq also hit all-time intraday and closing highs, and the Dow gained to set its first record high since May 7. Shares of Tesla (TSLA) fluctuated before ending slightly higher after the electric car-maker's second-quarter deliveries hit a new record but still missed analysts' estimates, based on Bloomberg consensus data.\nInvestorsconsidered the U.S. Labor Department's June jobs report, the central economic data point that came out this week. The print showed a stronger-than-anticipated acceleration in hiring, with non-farm payrolls rising by 850,000 for a sixth straight monthly gain. What started out as a joke has enabled some to laugh all the way to the bank.
\n
On the other hand, skeptics about Dogecoin would be just as quick to note that it has given up more than 60% of its earlier gains. Anyone who jumped on the Dogecoin late is probably sitting on some hefty losses.
\n
Regardless of what your take is on Dogecoin, what really matters is where you should put your money now. One place to get some investment ideas is Robinhood's 100 most popular stocks list. Here are two popular Robinhood stocks that could crush Dogecoin going forward.
\n
\n
NVIDIA
\n
While Dogecoin has nosedived in recent months, NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock has taken off. One reason why is NVIDIA's upcoming four-for-one stock split. While stock splits don't impact a company's valuation directly, they can attract greater numbers of small investors.
\n
However, there are plenty of even better reasons to like NVIDIA that have nothing to do with its stock split. The most obvious one is the company's gaming business.
\n
Gaming remains NVIDIA's biggest moneymaker, generating $2.8 billion of the company's total revenue of nearly $5.7 billion in the first quarter of 2021. And business is booming. NVIDIA's gaming revenue more than doubled year over year.
\n
It isn't just that gaming is increasing in popularity (although that is the case). NVIDIA benefits from regular hardware upgrade cycles. New games require even more processing power, which drives demand for the more powerful graphics processing units (GPUs).
\n
I especially like that NVIDIA is leveraging its gaming expertise to target new markets. For example, the company recently unveiled Omniverse Enterprise, a platform where design teams can build 3D virtual simulations and collaborate in real-time. In effect, NVIDIA is turning work into play (or vice versa, depending on how you look at it).
\n
NVIDIA CFO Colette Kress said in the company's Q1 conference call, \"As the world becomes more digital, virtual and collaborative, we see a significant revenue opportunity for Omniverse.\" I think that Kress's optimism is well-founded.
\n
Don't overlook NVIDIA's potential in the data center market, though. What started out as a joke has enabled some to laugh all the way to the bank.\nOn the other hand, skeptics about Dogecoin would be just as quick to note that it has given up more than 60% of its earlier gains. Anyone who jumped on the Dogecoin late is probably sitting on some hefty losses.\nRegardless of what your take is on Dogecoin, what really matters is where you should put your money now. One place to get some investment ideas is Robinhood's 100 most popular stocks list. Here are two popular Robinhood stocks that could crush Dogecoin going forward.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nNVIDIA\nWhile Dogecoin has nosedived in recent months, NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock has taken off. One reason why is NVIDIA's upcoming four-for-one stock split. While stock splits don't impact a company's valuation directly, they can attract greater numbers of small investors.\nHowever, there are plenty of even better reasons to like NVIDIA that have nothing to do with its stock split. The most obvious one is the company's gaming business.\nGaming remains NVIDIA's biggest moneymaker, generating $2.8 billion of the company's total revenue of nearly $5.7 billion in the first quarter of 2021. And business is booming. NVIDIA's gaming revenue more than doubled year over year.\nIt isn't just that gaming is increasing in popularity (although that is the case). NVIDIA benefits from regular hardware upgrade cycles. New games require even more processing power, which drives demand for the more powerful graphics processing units (GPUs).\nI especially like that NVIDIA is leveraging its gaming expertise to target new markets. For example, the company recently unveiled Omniverse Enterprise, a platform where design teams can build 3D virtual simulations and collaborate in real-time. In effect, NVIDIA is turning work into play (or vice versa, depending on how you look at it).\nNVIDIA CFO Colette Kress said in the company's Q1 conference call, \"As the world becomes more digital, virtual and collaborative, we see a significant revenue opportunity for Omniverse.\" I think that Kress's optimism is well-founded.\nDon't overlook NVIDIA's potential in the data center market, though. The company posted data center revenue of more than $2 billion in Q1, up 79% year over year. NVIDIA should enjoy sustained growth as more applications include artificial intelligence (AI).\nAssuming NVIDIA's pending acquisition of Arm passes regulatory hurdles, the company should further cement its leadership position in AI. In particular, the Arm deal would boost NVIDIA's presence in the fast-growing Internet of Things market with chips for mobile devices.\nSure, an overall cryptocurrency crash could cause NVIDIA's shares to fall due to the popularity of the company's GPUs with crypto miners. It's happened before. However, the company has taken steps to segment its gaming business from crypto. I think that any pullback would only be temporary. NVIDIA has too many other strong growth drivers.\nModerna\nMost companies can't honestly say that they've helped change the world. Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) can.\nThe biotech's COVID-19 vaccine was second only to the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech to win U.S. Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Moderna reported $1.9 billion in sales for the vaccine in Q1, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.\nBased on supply agreements in place as of early May, Moderna projected that its COVID-19 vaccine would rake in sales this year of $19.2 billion. However, the company has secured additional deals since then.\nIn just the past two weeks, Moderna has landed two new huge supply agreements. The U.S. government is buying 200 million additional doses of Moderna's COVID19 vaccine. The European Commission agreed to purchase another 150 million doses.\nBut does Moderna's market cap of close to $90 billion already price all of this growth in? To some extent, yes. However, shares still are trading at only around 10.5 times expected earnings. That's an attractive valuation, especially for a biotech stock.\nThe big question for Moderna is how strong the recurring revenue from its COVID-19 vaccine will be. While the sales levels of 2021 and 2022 might not be sustainable over the long run, annual vaccinations could be likely (especially with emerging coronavirus variants). I expect Moderna will be able to count on significant COVID-19 vaccine sales for years to come.\nThen there's the pipeline. Moderna plans to advance its cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine into late-stage testing this year. It could easily be a megablockbuster if approved. The company has a dozen other programs in clinical testing.\nModerna hopes to use its newfound riches to dramatically boost its pipeline in the near future. CEO Stephane Bancel has stated that he'd like to have up to 50 clinical programs.\nAll of Moderna's current and planned pipeline programs are based on its messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The company has maintained for a long time that if its mRNA approach worked for one disease, it would work for many diseases. Costco Wholesale
\n
Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST), with its 809 warehouses around the world, generated sales of $44.4 billion in the most recent quarter, a 21.7% jump from the prior-year period. As one of the world's largest retailers, Costco was a mission-critical business during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Consumers visited stores to shop for everything from cleaning supplies to food.
\n
The company's operations haven't changed much over time, and they likely won't anytime soon. Even e-commerce sales, which expanded rapidly over the past year and grew 41.2% in the most recent quarter, are slowing down. During the month of May, online revenue rose just 12.1%, signaling that shoppers are able and willing to transact more in person now.
\n
Costco is a recession-proof business that does well in good and bad economic times, which provides the safety investors want in a forever stock. Moreover, the reliance on membership fees, of which Costco generated $901 million last quarter, allows the company to keep prices very low. As of March 31, Costco had 109.8 million membership cardholders.
\n
Costco has and will continue to gain from its relentless focus to pass on savings to customers. This consumer-friendly fixation makes it difficult for rivals to compete and makes the business that much more loved by its shoppers.
\n
2. Home Depot
\n
Home Depot (NYSE:HD) has grown to a $331 billion business because people love to spend on their homes. Again, this facet of human nature will never change, and it was on full display over the past year. Home Depot's revenue in fiscal 2020 increased 19.9%, the fastest annual gain in at least a decade. As consumers spent more time indoors and shifted spending away from travel, entertainment, and leisure, Home Depot benefited greatly.
\n
And even as we slowly recover from the pandemic, the momentum is still strong. Same-store sales (or comps) in the most recent quarter shot up 31%, continuing an acceleration over the past four quarters. The housing market is on fire, supported by still historically low interest rates and rising home prices, all of which support demand for Home Depot's products.
\n
The company serves both do-it-yourself (DIY) and professional (Pro) customers. The former outperformed during 2020, but the latter is reemerging as a real growth driver as people require work on bigger projects and are more comfortable allowing contractors into their homes. Additionally, a seamless omnichannel approach allows customers to shop Home Depot in whatever manner they like. In the most recent quarter, 55% of online orders were actually fulfilled at a store.
\n
Home Depot paid $1.8 billion in dividends in the first quarter, and also bought back $4 billion worth of shares. Focusing on returning excess cash to shareholders further boosts investor returns.
\n
3. Starbucks
\n
Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX), the ubiquitous coffeehouse chain with nearly 33,000 locations worldwide, is arguably an even more important part of people's daily lives than the previous two companies. Americans (and the rest of the world) need their caffeine fix, and Starbucks is there to deliver.
\n
The business is back to registering growth in the U.S. following a huge slowdown last year. With 22.9 million active rewards members, Starbucks' top-notch loyalty program encourages repeat business. In the most recent quarter, a whopping 52% of sales at U.S. company-operated stores were from these rewards-program customers.
\n
You may think there isn't much growth left for this powerful brand that already has stores basically everywhere, but think again. During the investor day presentation last December, CFO Patrick Grismer claimed that by 2030, Starbucks plans to have 55,000 outlets in 100 markets globally. This 67% increase would make it the largest restaurant chain in the world. With revenue of $23.8 billion over the past 12 months, this ambitious goal should certainly boost that number significantly.
\n
Expect China, where comps soared 91% in the most recent quarter, to be a major growth driver going forward. Starbucks plans to open 600 net new stores in the country just in this fiscal year.
\n
Boring is beautiful
\n
All three of these companies are absolutely essential in their customers' lives. Without Costco, Home Depot, or Starbucks, people wouldn't be able to get the things they desperately need. Furthermore, they all benefit from strong competitive advantages that protect them from rival firms.
\n
In the future, we know with a high level of confidence that the products that these businesses sell will still be in high demand. This is the primary reason why they are three stocks you can keep forever.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Stocks You Can Keep Forever
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Stocks You Can Keep Forever\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-26 10:07 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
When looking for investments that have the potential to be held forever, it's beneficial not to only look at the latest technological craze or most disruptive businesses.
