Shares surged more than 200% in January, amid a spate of wild double-digit swings. BBBY stock then gave back the bulk of its gains.</p>\n<p>But the home goods retailer appears to be back on the radar of the WallStreetBets discussion group. On June 2, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond soared 62% before diving 28% the next session.</p>\n<p>The rest of the top 10 stocks have also outperformed the broader market. Macy's is up 68% year to date, while Resideo, Pacific Premier and Ameris have risen more than 40% each. The lowest gainer, bank holding company First Hawaiian, has advanced 20%. Since then, trading interest and social media chatter around GME stock has died down. Many traders have turned their attention to other short squeeze stocks, tech names and cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p>Normally, when a stock loses interest, its share price tends to slump. But the funny thing about GameStop stock is that it actually stabilized around the $175 mark. It hasn’t made another huge run-up as the bulls had hoped.</p>\n<p>But it certainly hasn’t crashed either. Instead, it has seemingly found an equilibrium in the $150-$200 range. That’s an outcome almost no one would have predicted heading into 2021. So what do things look like for GME stock going forward?</p>\n<p><b>Seeking to Grow Into Its Valuation</b></p>\n<p>GameStop now holds a market capitalization of around $13 billion. This puts GameStop in something of a no man’s land. The company is drastically overpriced based on the value of its traditional physical games business. After all, GME stock traded south of $10 per share until fairly recently.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, if GameStop can successfully transform itself into an e-commerce giant, $13 billion might seem cheap. The obvious comparison is to online pet products retailer&nbsp;<b>Chewy</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CHWY</u></b>). Ryan Cohen built Chewy into a dominant player in its field as its former CEO. Now, he’ll be trying to work the same magic at GameStop as he steps into the role of chairman.</p>\n<p>Chewy currently has a market capitalization of $29 billion. That’s an encouraging figure for GameStop, as GME stock is still at just half of Chewy’s valuation. On the other hand, Chewy has already demonstrated success at online e-commerce and is running at roughly break even levels in terms of earnings. GameStop will need a good deal more time to get its e-commerce business to a comparable level.</p>\n<p><b>Options Trades Still Offer Appeal</b></p>\n<p>A couple months ago, I discussed selling GME&nbsp;naked puts&nbsp;to capitalize on the weird situation here. GameStop stock is clearly ahead of itself when you look at the fundamentals. On the other hand, the company no longer has any bankruptcy risk. Its recent stock offering ensures that GameStop is cashed up and capable of living on for years to come as it seeks to transform into an e-commerce business.</p>\n<p>As such, GameStop is likely to go down in coming months, but not nearly as quickly as bears hope. The naked put strategy is a way to take advantage of this. The seller gets premium up-front from selling the option. If the stock falls below the pre-determined strike price, the seller buys the stock at said price while keeping the premium.</p>\n<p>Even with GameStop well north of $100, people have been paying good money to bet on GME stock returning to $25 or less within a few months.</p>\n<p>The position I previously discussed — selling July $20 puts — has now returned a 90% profit. With short options, the maximum gain is 100% when the option in question reaches zero. Those puts I sold initially fetched $2 each and are now trading for around 20 cents.</p>\n<p>While that particular option contract is no longer as appealing, there are compelling alternatives in future months. Jan 2022 $30 puts, for example, currently sell for almost $2. This means that a seller would get $200 per contract up front and be on the hook to buy the stock at $28 ($30 minus the premium) if GME stock crashed to less than $30 over the next 8 months.</p>\n<p>Given all the cash GameStop just raised, it should be able to keep its stock price above of $30.</p>\n<p><b>GME Stock Verdict</b></p>\n<p>I see little reason whatsoever to own GME stock. At this price, people are acting as if GameStop’s conversion into an e-commerce company has already been successful. The company can’t come anywhere close to supporting a $13 billion price tag simply based on its existing brick-and-mortar business. Thus, its future e-commerce endeavors will have to achieve major success merely to justify today’s valuation, let alone any further upside.</p>\n<p>However, GameStop isn’t going bust anytime soon, either. The bearish thesis made sense at one point, but that ship has sailed. The company now has cash and plenty of time to try to turn things around. Many traders have turned their attention to other short squeeze stocks, tech names and cryptocurrencies.\nNormally, when a stock loses interest, its share price tends to slump. But the funny thing about GameStop stock is that it actually stabilized around the $175 mark. It hasn’t made another huge run-up as the bulls had hoped.\nBut it certainly hasn’t crashed either. Instead, it has seemingly found an equilibrium in the $150-$200 range. That’s an outcome almost no one would have predicted heading into 2021. So what do things look like for GME stock going forward?\nSeeking to Grow Into Its Valuation\nGameStop now holds a market capitalization of around $13 billion. This puts GameStop in something of a no man’s land. The company is drastically overpriced based on the value of its traditional physical games business. After all, GME stock traded south of $10 per share until fairly recently.\nOn the other hand, if GameStop can successfully transform itself into an e-commerce giant, $13 billion might seem cheap. The obvious comparison is to online pet products retailer Chewy(NYSE:CHWY). Ryan Cohen built Chewy into a dominant player in its field as its former CEO. Now, he’ll be trying to work the same magic at GameStop as he steps into the role of chairman.\nChewy currently has a market capitalization of $29 billion. That’s an encouraging figure for GameStop, as GME stock is still at just half of Chewy’s valuation. On the other hand, Chewy has already demonstrated success at online e-commerce and is running at roughly break even levels in terms of earnings. GameStop will need a good deal more time to get its e-commerce business to a comparable level.\nOptions Trades Still Offer Appeal\nA couple months ago, I discussed selling GME naked puts to capitalize on the weird situation here. GameStop stock is clearly ahead of itself when you look at the fundamentals. On the other hand, the company no longer has any bankruptcy risk. Its recent stock offering ensures that GameStop is cashed up and capable of living on for years to come as it seeks to transform into an e-commerce business.\nAs such, GameStop is likely to go down in coming months, but not nearly as quickly as bears hope. The naked put strategy is a way to take advantage of this. The seller gets premium up-front from selling the option. If the stock falls below the pre-determined strike price, the seller buys the stock at said price while keeping the premium.\nEven with GameStop well north of $100, people have been paying good money to bet on GME stock returning to $25 or less within a few months.\nThe position I previously discussed — selling July $20 puts — has now returned a 90% profit. With short options, the maximum gain is 100% when the option in question reaches zero. Those puts I sold initially fetched $2 each and are now trading for around 20 cents.\nWhile that particular option contract is no longer as appealing, there are compelling alternatives in future months. Jan 2022 $30 puts, for example, currently sell for almost $2. This means that a seller would get $200 per contract up front and be on the hook to buy the stock at $28 ($30 minus the premium) if GME stock crashed to less than $30 over the next 8 months.\nGiven all the cash GameStop just raised, it should be able to keep its stock price above of $30.\nGME Stock Verdict\nI see little reason whatsoever to own GME stock. At this price, people are acting as if GameStop’s conversion into an e-commerce company has already been successful. The company can’t come anywhere close to supporting a $13 billion price tag simply based on its existing brick-and-mortar business. Thus, its future e-commerce endeavors will have to achieve major success merely to justify today’s valuation, let alone any further upside.\nHowever, GameStop isn’t going bust anytime soon, either. The bearish thesis made sense at one point, but that ship has sailed. The company now has cash and plenty of time to try to turn things around. The steep climb in yields abated at the end of March, even as economic data showed and stronger price pressures in April.&nbsp;The 10-year yield has&nbsp;dropped to 1.64%&nbsp;from 1.74% on March 31.</p>\n<p>Yet the document may still provide some clues about the central bank’s views. And officials have provided more perspective on policy since the latest meeting as well. Notably, Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida spoke at a conference on Monday and discussed some recent economic data points as well.</p>\n<p>Here’s what strategists expect out of the meeting today, and what Clarida said about the topics:</p>\n<p><b>“Attuned and Attentive” to “Transitory” Inflation?</b></p>\n<p>One popular line among Fed officials, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been the assurance that this spring is expected to bring a “transitory” rise in inflation, mostly related to the reopening of the U.S. economy after the pandemic brought a sharp deceleration in activity last year.</p>\n<p>Mizuho economists Steven Ricchiuto and Alex Pelle wrote in a May 18 note that they expect “several mentions of ‘transitory’ price pressures” in the minutes. They also highlighted that many of the steepest increases in consumer prices in April were in sectors where demand had been hit most by the pandemic, such as hotels and airfares. “So far [that] validates the Fed’s thinking,” they added.</p>\n<p>Yet at Monday’s conference, Clarida seemed to be repeating a different type of assurance about inflation:&nbsp; That the central bank would be “attuned and attentive” to any data showing higher price pressures.</p>\n<p>“In the CPI report, [reopening] did clearly put upward pressure on prices. Now our baseline view is that most of this is likely to be transitory, but we have to be attuned and attentive to the incoming data,” he said. “[The] key element of our mandate is price stability and an important component of price stability is well-anchored inflation expectations. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”</p>\n<p><b>Taper Timeline</b></p>\n<p>Investors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.</p>\n<p>Most on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases&nbsp;late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.</p>\n<p>So any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.</p>\n<p><b>Labor-Market Outlook</b></p>\n<p>One key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.</p>\n<p>Still, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes:&nbsp; How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?</p>\n<p>Before the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.</p>\n<p>Clarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.</p>\n<p>“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”</p>\n<p>Ultimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes:&nbsp; Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy. Despite sales declining 1% year over year, the company managed to report a pro forma profit of $1.39 per share, which was ahead of analyst expectations.</p><p>Regardless, Intel reported a steep 540 basis point decline in its gross margin to 55.2%, and it saw its operating margin cut nearly in half as the company spent heavily to race to catch up to its rivals in advanced computer chips. Analysts at Citigroup commented yesterday that Intel stock appears to be close to its peak valuation and is likely to decline as investors acclimate to the new environment in which Intel is losing, not gaining, market share.</p><p>And the reason this is good news for&nbsp;AMD&nbsp;is that, according to Citi at least, it's AMD that's taking that market share away from Intel.</p><p><b>Now what</b></p><p>So what's an investor to do with all this information?</p><p>At a valuation of just 13.6 times trailing earnings, Intel stock certainly looks like a relative bargain when compared with AMD stock, which trades at 38.4 times earnings. But AMD has acash-rich balance sheet, versus Intel that's carrying $13.5 billion in net debt. SLYV rallied 32% this year through Thursday's close.</p>\n<p>That more than doubles the return of its growth stock counterpart, SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Growth (SLYG), which is up 15%. The index SLYG tracks includes stocks with the strongest growth traits based on sales growth, earnings change to price and momentum.</p>\n<p>Back to SLYV, financials accounted for the biggest sector weight at 24% of assets. Industrials weighed in at about 17%, consumer discretionary 15% and real estate 10%. Information technology was next at 8% and materials, energy and health care, 6% each.&nbsp;Smaller positions in consumer staples, utilities and communication services made up the rest.</p>\n<p>SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Value is in IBD's ETF Leaders, but SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Growth is not.</p>\n<p><b>GameStop Stock Leads</b></p>\n<p><b>GameStop</b>(GME),<b>Macy's</b>(M),<b>PDC Energy</b>(PDCE),<b>Resideo Technologies</b>(REZI) and<b>BankUnited</b>(BKU) were the top five holdings as of Wednesday.</p>\n<p><b>Pacific Premier Bancorp</b>(PPBI),<b>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</b>(BBBY),<b>Ameris Bancorp</b>(ABCB),<b>First Hawaiian</b>(FHB) and<b>Insight Enterprises</b>(NSIT) rounded out the top 10.</p>\n<p>GameStop has undergone wide swings this year. It rocketed about 2,500% early this year amid theshort-squeeze rallyfueled by the Reddit/WallStreetBets crowd.GME stockthen crashed 92% from a Jan. 28 high to its mid-February low. That was followed by an 805% surge the next three weeks, and a 66% drop over the next two weeks.</p>\n<p>Action had been relatively subdued since, until Thursday's 27% dive. Even after that, GameStop stock was up 1,070% year to date through Thursday's close.</p>\n<p>Could GME be inflating SLYV's performance? Certainly, given its quadruple-digit gain. But a look at SLYG's portfolio is interesting. GameStop stock is also the top holding in the growth stock ETF, though the rest of the top 10 differ vastly.</p>\n<p><b>Second Meme Stock In Top 10</b></p>\n<p>PDC Energy, up 130%, saw the next biggest gain in the top 10. The Colorado-based oil and gas explorer has a 97Relative Strength Rating, which mean it's in the top 3% of all stocks. Its relative strength line is at a 52-week high, a bullish sign.</p>\n<p>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, another meme stock, is up 78% this year. Shares surged more than 200% in January, amid a spate of wild double-digit swings. BBBY stock then gave back the bulk of its gains.</p>\n<p>But the home goods retailer appears to be back on the radar of the WallStreetBets discussion group. On June 2, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond soared 62% before diving 28% the next session.</p>\n<p>The rest of the top 10 stocks have also outperformed the broader market. Macy's is up 68% year to date, while Resideo, Pacific Premier and Ameris have risen more than 40% each. The lowest gainer, bank holding company First Hawaiian, has advanced 20%. The index SLYG tracks includes stocks with the strongest growth traits based on sales growth, earnings change to price and momentum.\nBack to SLYV, financials accounted for the biggest sector weight at 24% of assets. Industrials weighed in at about 17%, consumer discretionary 15% and real estate 10%.
