A brand new model, to be delivered in 2022, was announced. And the technology NIO is packing into its cars is something to behold. There are even augmented reality glasses—like something out of an Avengers movie.
\n
The new vehicle is the ET5 midsize sedan. It’s a higher-end model starting at about $50,000. With NIO’s battery as a service subscription, the initial purchase price is about $40,000. NIO will let car buyers pay a monthly fee, essentially, separating the battery purchase from the car purchase.
\n
The new sedan comes with roughly 500 horsepower and will go zero to 60 miles an hour in about 4 seconds. It should be able to drive up to 430 miles per charge, a big number although Chinese and U.S. range statistics are reported differently.
\n
The ET5 is also equipped with advanced safety features including lidar sensors.
\n
Lidar is essentially laser-based radar and most auto makers believe lidar is one of the technologies required to achieve truly self-driving technology. The ET5 also comes equipped with the company’s latest self-driving software. NIO Autonomous Driving or NAD, as the company calls it, will maintain driving speeds and do some steering, but drivers still need to pay attention to the road at all times.
\n
All the software for self-driving—and the software running other car systems—runs on a computer powered by Nvidia (NVDA) chips.
\n
Then there are the glasses. NIO unveiled augmented reality glasses that are integrated with the car. “The visual experience is as good as a 201-inch screen at 6 meters away,” said NIO founder William Li. The glasses can display vehicle information. Drivers won’t have to look down to check speed. The glasses drew applause from the assembled crowd.
\n
NIO plans to deliver the ET5 by September 2022. The company also provided an update about its new ET7 sedan. Deliveries of that model should begin in March 2022. The ET7 was unveiled at the company’s last big event in January 2021.
\n
NIO stock jumped 6.5% to more than $60 a share the Monday following that January event—and it could use another bump now. A brand new model, to be delivered in 2022, was announced. And the technology NIO is packing into its cars is something to behold. There are even augmented reality glasses—like something out of an Avengers movie.\nThe new vehicle is the ET5 midsize sedan. It’s a higher-end model starting at about $50,000. With NIO’s battery as a service subscription, the initial purchase price is about $40,000. NIO will let car buyers pay a monthly fee, essentially, separating the battery purchase from the car purchase.\nThe new sedan comes with roughly 500 horsepower and will go zero to 60 miles an hour in about 4 seconds. It should be able to drive up to 430 miles per charge, a big number although Chinese and U.S. range statistics are reported differently.\nThe ET5 is also equipped with advanced safety features including lidar sensors.\nLidar is essentially laser-based radar and most auto makers believe lidar is one of the technologies required to achieve truly self-driving technology. The ET5 also comes equipped with the company’s latest self-driving software. NIO Autonomous Driving or NAD, as the company calls it, will maintain driving speeds and do some steering, but drivers still need to pay attention to the road at all times.\nAll the software for self-driving—and the software running other car systems—runs on a computer powered by Nvidia (NVDA) chips.\nThen there are the glasses. NIO unveiled augmented reality glasses that are integrated with the car. “The visual experience is as good as a 201-inch screen at 6 meters away,” said NIO founder William Li. The glasses can display vehicle information. Drivers won’t have to look down to check speed. The glasses drew applause from the assembled crowd.\nNIO plans to deliver the ET5 by September 2022. The company also provided an update about its new ET7 sedan. Deliveries of that model should begin in March 2022. The ET7 was unveiled at the company’s last big event in January 2021.\nNIO stock jumped 6.5% to more than $60 a share the Monday following that January event—and it could use another bump now. NIO stock has fallen 22% over the last month to $30. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are down about 2% and 1% over the same span. NIO’s third-quarter earnings were fine. Earnings and deliveries don’t seem to be what’s troubling investors most.XPeng (XPEV) shares are down 12% over the past month.\nHow the stock reacts to the new model, new technology and proposed delivery dates will say a lot about investor sentiment toward highly valued EV makers and U.S.-listed Chinese stocks in the coming weeks.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"NIO":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1698,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":823170996,"gmtCreate":1633606937321,"gmtModify":1633606937511,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Oook","listText":"Oook","text":"Oook","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/823170996","repostId":"2173085949","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1766,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":823170091,"gmtCreate":1633606927024,"gmtModify":1633606927141,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Cool","listText":"Cool","text":"Cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/823170091","repostId":"1184680135","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2389,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":820474080,"gmtCreate":1633425676593,"gmtModify":1633425676716,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/820474080","repostId":"1141561750","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2127,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":820475763,"gmtCreate":1633425667128,"gmtModify":1633425667306,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/820475763","repostId":"2173263994","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1585,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":820958677,"gmtCreate":1633344831706,"gmtModify":1633344831891,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nope","listText":"Nope","text":"Nope","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/820958677","repostId":"1139003361","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2128,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":820958368,"gmtCreate":1633344819595,"gmtModify":1633344820189,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/820958368","repostId":"1111794803","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":641,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":865266288,"gmtCreate":1632989060899,"gmtModify":1632989061058,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Awesome","listText":"Awesome","text":"Awesome","images":[], mistake that occurred during a high-profile mission this summer.
\n
The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday said it had completed a probe into the July flight that carried billionaire Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Galactic, and five others to the edge of space and back to a facility in New Mexico.
\n
The agency found the company’s spacecraft deviated from airspace it was assigned during its descent back to Earth, and that Virgin Galactic failed to report that error to the FAA as required.
\n
Virgin Galactic said the aviation regulator accepted its proposals Those changes, according to the company, include designating a larger area as protected airspace to allow for a variety for possible trajectories during missions and taking steps to ensure the company communicates with FAA air-traffic control about flights as they are occurring.\n“The updates to our airspace and real-time mission notification protocols will strengthen our preparations as we move closer to the commercial launch of our spaceflight experience,” Virgin Galactic Chief Executive Michael Colglazier said in a statement.\nAn FAA spokesman declined to comment on Virgin Galactic’s planned communications changes. A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment.\nShares of the Las Cruces, N.M.-based company rose more than 10% in after-hours trading.\nVirgin Galactic previously said that during the July flight, its spacecraft shifted from its planned trajectory for one minute and 41 seconds due to winds while the craft was returning to the ground. The ship never flew above population centers, the company has said.\nDuring its investigation, the FAA prohibited Virgin Galactic from operating space flights. Who is at fault? You? The car’s manufacturer? No one?\nThe answer could radically disrupt the insurance industry, potentially making some forms of auto insurance obsolete and saving drivers hundreds of dollars a year.\nSelf-driving cars are on the horizon\nCourtesy of Tesla, Inc.\nWe’re still years away from driverless cars speeding down the freeway, but simple automation is already present in many vehicles today.\nThe Society of Automotive Engineers uses a five-point scale to measure automation. A Level 1 vehicle can help out with either steering (like lane-centering assistance) or speed (like adaptive cruise control). A Level 2 vehicle can do both at the same time.\nLevel 2 vehicles are already available from automakers like Hyundai, Kia and Ford. And despite the name, the current version of Tesla’s “full self-driving” software remains at Level 2.\nLevel 5 vehicles (the asleep-at-the-wheel kind) could be commercially available by the end of the decade, says a report from the independent Victoria Transport Policy Institute. But they may not be affordable until the 2040s or 2050s.\nThese four-wheeled robots promise to be much safer than human drivers, potentially eliminating a third of all crashes, according to a study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.\nThat means fewer insurance claims and lower premiums for everybody — if you even need insurance at all.\nSome forms of insurance may go extinct\nMonkey Business Images / Shutterstock\nAs vehicles become more and more automated, car insurance may end up looking radically different.\nRight now, the risk you pose as a driver is a huge factor in the amount you pay each month. Insurers look at your driving history, age, sex, the miles you clock, where you live and even your credit score to assess your risk, then bill you accordingly.\nBut with autonomous cars, your driving skill and temperament may not matter at all.\nIn fact, lawmakers may rule that any and all liability for an accident would fall on the car’s manufacturer. If someone gets hit by your self-driving car, their complaint isn’t with you; it’s with Tesla, Ford or Hyundai for the failure of their technology.\nSome automakers, like Volvo, have already announced that they will accept full responsibility for property damage or injuries caused by their self-driving cars. And a 2014 Brookings Institute study found that product liability laws in the U.S. are already in good shape to handle the shift.\nWith humans off the hook, liability coverage — the kind required by law in almost every state — could become a thing of the past.\nOther kinds of insurance will endure\nDaniel Jedzura / Shutterstock\nEven if some forms of coverage do become obsolete, you may not be able to eliminate your auto insurance policy entirely.\nMany drivers will still want comprehensive coverage, which protects against threats like theft or extreme weather.\nAnd in the event of a hit-and-run, you’d still want coverage that will repair your vehicle and pay for any injuries you sustain. In some states, personal injury protection is mandatory.\nSelf-driving cars could actually cost you more in some ways, too. Automakers may start charging a lot more for their vehicles to account for the cost of covering collisions, making it even more important to score a good deal.\nAnd because the repairs for these highly sophisticated cars may be highly expensive, insurance premiums could stay elevated even if self-driving cars succeed at dramatically reducing the rate of accidents on the road.\nHow to reduce your bills in the meantime\nDragana Gordic / Shutterstock\nAs it stands, asleep-at-the-wheel automation is years off, which means paying for auto insurance is a must.\nBut overpaying is not. The human drivers of today have several options to slash their auto insurance premiums.\nFirst, you’ll want to deal with any debt you’re carrying. In most states, insurers are allowed to use your credit information to set your premiums, and they see people with high debt as risk takers.\nNext, keep in mind that some vehicles cost more than others to insure. One of the biggest factors is how much your car costs to replace — so if you’re looking for a new ride, consider shopping around for a more affordable option.\nFinally, the best way to save on auto insurance is simply to shop around for a better price every so often. If you haven’t compared quotes this year — or in the last few years — you may be paying hundreds of dollars more than you need to. You can use the same strategy to save on home insurance, too.\nThis article provides information only and should not be construed as advice. But it's also down to an awakening over an energy crunch in Europe and elsewhere that may not leave U.S. investors alone, say analysts.\n\"I think yesterday was the first sign in quite some time where we got a glimpse of what an energy crunch, and more important, high interest rates mean for equities,\" said Peter Garnry, head of equity strategy at Saxo Bank, in a podcast on Tuesday.\nEnergy prices are surging in Europe this morning, including natural gas, and one of the region's big competitors is China. That global powerhouse has been suffering electricity shortages that have closed factories, which could worsen COVID-19 pandemic-fueled problems such as a semiconductor shortages. And the scramble for natural gas comes as countries have been trying to reach for cleaner energy.\nWith oil prices also pushing higher -- Brent is on the doorstop of $80 this morning -- our call of the day from Saxo Bank's Garnry says investors may be herded back toward some unloved sectors soon.\n\"I think at one point, the mining and energy sector will be too attractive in terms of cash flow, that I think more investors will just put the ESG focus on standby and go all in on the energy and mining sector,\" he said.\nESG refers to investments that take into account environmental, social, and governance concerns, a sector that's been thrust into the spotlight amid climate change warnings.\nGarnry points to the below slide that shows the ratio between the MSCI World Energy Sector net total returns in dollars versus MSCI World.\nSAXO BANK/BLOOMBERG\n\"As you can see, as in 1995, we are still at very, very low relative levels. I think there is so much room and potential for the energy sector here,\" said Garnry. \"You are trading at something that looks like a 60% to 70% discount on forward valuations and the dividend yield is more than twice as high for the energy sector as it is for the MSCI World.\"\nSAXO markets will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 6, marking a three-day weekend in the U.S., following what has been a mostly spectacular run for the stock market. The rally came despite concerns about the spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus and unease about the timetable for an eventual rollback of easy-money policies implemented by the Federal Reserve at the onset of the pandemic last year.
\n
On Monday, U.S. stock exchanges, including the Intercontinental Exchange Inc. -owned New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Inc.,will be closed, so don’t look for any action in individual stocks or indexes including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 or Nasdaq Composite indexes.
\n
The S&P 500 has already notched 54 record closing highs in 2021 and was looking for its 55th on Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite was on track to book its 35th all-time high of the year. The Dow stood less than a percentage point from its Aug. 16 record, mid-afternoon Friday.
\n
Sifma, the securities-industry trade group for fixed-income, also has recommended the bond market close on Labor Day, including trading in the 10-year Treasury note, which was yielding around 1.33% after the U.S. August jobs report came in weaker than expected.
\n
However, the Labor Department’s employment report, which showed that 235,000 jobs were created in August, far below expectations for more than 700,000, failed to dull expectations among sovereign debt investors for a near-term announcement of tapering of the Fed’s $120 billion in monthly purchases in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities.
\n
Trading in most commodity futures, including Nymex crude-oil and Comex gold,on U.S. exchanges will also be halted Monday.
\n
Is there any significance to the holiday for average investors, besides the time off in the U.S. and the barbecues?
\n
Probably not.
\n
But the May Memorial Day to September Labor Day period in recent years has proven a bullish stretch one for investors, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Dow, for example, is up by about 2% over that period and averages a gain of 1.3%, producing a winning record 65% of the time. The Dow is currently enjoying a win streak, over the past six Memorial Day/Labor Day periods, representing the longest win streak since 1989. Last year, the markets gained nearly 15% over that time.
\n
DOW JONES MARKET DATA
\n
The S&P 500 is on a similar win streak and is up nearly 8% so far this Memorial Day-Labor Day period. It has risen more than 70% over that period in past years and averages a 1.7% gain. The broad-market index rose 16% during that time in 2020.
\n
DOW JONES MARKET DATA
\n
But if there is a bona fide trend in the Labor Day trading it may be this one that MarketWatch’s Steve Goldstein reports, quoting Raymond James strategist Tavis McCourt, who says that in the last two years, there was a big value and cyclical bias in stock markets after the holiday, and in 2018, markets basically collapsed after the summer drew to a close.
\n
It is impossible to know if the stock market rally will peter out similarly this time around but there is a growing sense on Wall Street that valuations are too lofty and equity indexes are due for a pullback of at least 5% or better from current heights.
\n
Markets will be back to business as usual on Tuesday and, of course, European bourses, including London’s FTSE 100 index and the pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 will be open on Monday, as well as Asian markets, the Nikkei 225,Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and the Shanghai Composite Index.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The rally came despite concerns about the spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus and unease about the timetable for an eventual rollback of easy-money policies implemented by the Federal Reserve at the onset of the pandemic last year.\nOn Monday, U.S. stock exchanges, including the Intercontinental Exchange Inc. -owned New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Inc.,will be closed, so don’t look for any action in individual stocks or indexes including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 or Nasdaq Composite indexes.\nThe S&P 500 has already notched 54 record closing highs in 2021 and was looking for its 55th on Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite was on track to book its 35th all-time high of the year. The Dow stood less than a percentage point from its Aug. 16 record, mid-afternoon Friday.\nSifma, the securities-industry trade group for fixed-income, also has recommended the bond market close on Labor Day, including trading in the 10-year Treasury note, which was yielding around 1.33% after the U.S. August jobs report came in weaker than expected.\nHowever, the Labor Department’s employment report, which showed that 235,000 jobs were created in August, far below expectations for more than 700,000, failed to dull expectations among sovereign debt investors for a near-term announcement of tapering of the Fed’s $120 billion in monthly purchases in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities.\nTrading in most commodity futures, including Nymex crude-oil and Comex gold,on U.S. exchanges will also be halted Monday.\nIs there any significance to the holiday for average investors, besides the time off in the U.S. and the barbecues?\nProbably not.\nBut the May Memorial Day to September Labor Day period in recent years has proven a bullish stretch one for investors, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Dow, for example, is up by about 2% over that period and averages a gain of 1.3%, producing a winning record 65% of the time. The Dow is currently enjoying a win streak, over the past six Memorial Day/Labor Day periods, representing the longest win streak since 1989. Last year, the markets gained nearly 15% over that time.\nDOW JONES MARKET DATA\nThe S&P 500 is on a similar win streak and is up nearly 8% so far this Memorial Day-Labor Day period. It has risen more than 70% over that period in past years and averages a 1.7% gain. The broad-market index rose 16% during that time in 2020.\nDOW JONES MARKET DATA\nBut if there is a bona fide trend in the Labor Day trading it may be this one that MarketWatch’s Steve Goldstein reports, quoting Raymond James strategist Tavis McCourt, who says that in the last two years, there was a big value and cyclical bias in stock markets after the holiday, and in 2018, markets basically collapsed after the summer drew to a close.\nIt is impossible to know if the stock market rally will peter out similarly this time around but there is a growing sense on Wall Street that valuations are too lofty and equity indexes are due for a pullback of at least 5% or better from current heights.\nMarkets will be back to business as usual on Tuesday and, of course, European bourses, including London’s FTSE 100 index and the pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 will be open on Monday, as well as Asian markets, the Nikkei 225,Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and the Shanghai Composite Index.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"ICE":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":449,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":810110454,"gmtCreate":1629951345578,"gmtModify":1631892206291,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Awesome","listText":"Awesome","text":"Awesome","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/810110454","repostId":"1197778368","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":618,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":801414841,"gmtCreate":1627527750683,"gmtModify":1633764088573,"author":{"id":"3561967153760715","authorId":"3561967153760715","name":"Brencakes","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c929d65869638dbafe19d96b87310089","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3561967153760715","authorIdStr":"3561967153760715"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/801414841","repostId":"1127264445","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1127264445","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627514621,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1127264445?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-29 07:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"S&P 500 ends off day's lows; Powell says Fed still a ways away from rate hikes","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1127264445","media":"Reuters","summary":"NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 ended little changed on Wednesday but off its session lows after th","content":"
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 ended little changed on Wednesday but off its session lows after the Federal Reserve said the U.S. economic recovery remains on track and Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank was still a ways away from considering raising interest rates.
\n
Keeping the market in check, shares of tech giant Apple Inc fell 1.2% after it forecast slowing revenue growth.
\n
In a news conference following the release of a new policy statement from the Fed, Powell also said the U.S. job market still had “some ground to cover” before it would be time to pull back from the economic support the U.S. central bank put in place in the spring of 2020 to battle the coronavirus pandemic’s economic shocks.
\n
“It looks like probably the most positive thing for the market was that they are nowhere near increasing interest rates,” said Alan Lancz, president, Alan B. The S&P 500 registered its second-best first-half performance since 1998, rising 14.5%.\n“It’s been a good quarter,” said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth in Fairfield, Connecticut. “As of last night’s close, the S&P has gained more than 14% year-to-date, topping the Dow and the Nasdaq. That indicates that the stock market is having a broad rally.”\nFor the month, the bellwether S&P 500 notched its fifth consecutive advance, while the Dow snapped its four-month winning streak to end slightly lower. The Nasdaq also gained ground in June.\nThis month, investor appetite shifted away from economically sensitive cyclicals in favor of growth stocks.\n“Leading sectors year-to-date are what you’d expect,” Pavlik added. “Energy, financials and industrials, and that speaks to an economic environment that’s in the early stages of a cycle.”\n“(Investors) started the switch back to growth (stocks) after people started to buy in to (Fed Chair Jerome) Powell’s comments that focus on transitory inflation,” Pavlik added.\n“Some of the reopening trades have gotten a bit long in the tooth and that’s leading people back to growth.”\n(Graphic: Growths stocks outperform value in June, narrow YTD gap, )\n“The overall stock market continues to be on a tear, with very consistent gains for quite some time,” said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment strategist at Inverness Counsel in New York. “Valuations, while certainly high by historical standards, have been at a fairly consistent level, benefiting from the economic recovery.”\nThe private sector added 692,000 jobs in June, breezing past expectations, according to payroll processor ADP. The number is 92,000 higher than the private payroll adds economists predict from the Labor Department’s more comprehensive employment report due on Friday.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 210.22 points, or 0.61%, to 34,502.51, the S&P 500 gained 5.7 points, or 0.13%, to 4,297.5 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 24.38 points, or 0.17%, to 14,503.95.\nAmong the 11 major sectors in the S&P, six ended the session higher, with energy enjoying the biggest percentage gain. Real estate was the day’s biggest loser.\nBoeing Co gained 1.6% after Germany’s defense ministry announced it would buy five of the planemaker’s P-8A maritime control aircraft, coming on the heels of United Airlines unveiling its largest-ever order for new planes.\nWalmart jumped 2.7% after announcing on Tuesday that it would start selling a prescription-only insulin analog.\nMicron Technology advanced 2.5% ahead of its quarterly earnings release, but was relatively unchanged in after-hours trading following the chipmaker’s quarterly results.\nAdvancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.35-to-1 ratio;
