It hasn’t provided revenue&nbsp;guidance since the start of the pandemic, citing uncertainty.&nbsp;This is Apple’s second quarter in a row with double-digit growth in all product categories.&nbsp;Apple CFO Luca Maestri told analysts that the company expects June quarter revenue to rise by double digits year-over-year, although it faces some supply shortages due to the worldwide chip shortage.</p><p>Apple has said in the past months that its business has been boosted by the pandemic as consumers&nbsp;and businesses&nbsp;bought&nbsp;computers&nbsp;to work and entertain themselves while at home. But Apple’s strong results in the quarter suggest that the trend may persist as more economies&nbsp;open up.</p><p>Or, as Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement: “This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this&nbsp;moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days&nbsp;ahead for all of us.”</p><p>Mac sales were up 70%, and Cook said that the result was “fueled by” the company’s introduction of its Mac&nbsp;laptops&nbsp;that used its own M1 chips&nbsp;for longer battery life, instead of processors sold by&nbsp;Intel.&nbsp;iPad sales were up&nbsp;nearly 79% year-over-year.</p><p>Neither of those&nbsp;results&nbsp;include iPad Pro or iMac models the company announced in March, which are expected to drive additional demand.</p><p>“We’re seeing strong first-time buyers on the Mac&nbsp;…&nbsp;it continues to run just south of 50%,” Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton. “And, in China, it’s even higher than that&nbsp;…&nbsp;it’s more around two-thirds. And that speaks to people preferring to work on the Mac.”</p><p>Apple’s iPhone also reported strong results this quarter, quelling fears that the current annual cycle could slow down. A closely-watched trial with Fortnite maker Epic Games over App Store policies kicks off next week.</p><p>“The App Store has been an economic miracle. Last year, the estimates are that there was over a half a trillion dollars of economic activity because of the store. And, so, this has been just an economic gamechanger for not only the United States, but several countries around the world. And, we’re going to go in and tell our story. And we’ll see where it goes. But, we’re confident,” Cook told CNBC.</p><p>Apple’s gross margin was also unusually elevated for the company. However, the company's decision to sell 17 million shares in a public offering also hurt.</p>\n<p>Skillz's competition-focused approach keeps users more engaged than other leading online platforms. It's also driving tremendous growth. The company's revenue nearly doubled in 2020. Skillz is especially making inroads in converting users to paying customers.</p>\n<p>The mobile gaming market totaled $86 billion last year and continues to grow rapidly. Skillz should be able to increase its market share as it expands internationally and adds new genres of games to its platform. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.</p>\n<p>The trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different.&nbsp;Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?</p>\n<p>A family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.</p>\n<p><b>Unregulated money managers</b></p>\n<p>Here’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)</p>\n<p>This appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player&nbsp;Vipshop Holdings&nbsp;Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company&nbsp;GSX Techedu&nbsp;Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS&nbsp;Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.</p>\n<p>The problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including&nbsp;Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%,&nbsp;Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc.&nbsp;NMR,+1.87%.</p>\n<p>But since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre&nbsp;reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.</p>\n<p><b>Danger of counterparty risk</b></p>\n<p>This is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.</p>\n<p>So is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.</p>\n<p>One peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.</p>\n<p>But federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.</p>\n<p><b>Yellen on the case</b></p>\n<p>This issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”</p>\n<p>Most financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. But there are pockets of opportunity</p>\n<p>Since Sept. 23, when investors resumed buying up assets most tethered to the direction of the economy, the S&amp;P 500 has risen 22%. Investors expect a sharp economic rebound, as Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered quickly and trillions of dollars of fiscal stimulus has shored up demand. Much of that is now priced in, and valuations are fairly rich, leaving some to wonder if the market has seen the best of its gains for the near term.</p>\n<p>That anxiety is evident in a Citigroup (ticker: C) survey of institutional investors. A “plurality” of those surveyed, according to the bank’s strategists, expect the S&amp;P 500 to move past 4,100 by the end of the year. That implies less than a 4% gain from the index’s current level. The average call for the S&amp;P 500, though, was for a gain just under 1%.</p>\n<p>Bettter opportunities may lie within the broader market. Financials is the cheapest large-capitalization sector in the country, with S&amp;P 500 financials trading at a forward-earnings multiple 32% lower than the average on the broader index. Earnings growth for the sector is set to explode in the next few quarters—especially for banks—as long-dated interest rates have risen and have more room to rise. At such low valuations, earnings may not be priced into the stocks. As rates rise and lending activity remains strong, earnings can post low-double-digit growth though 2022, according to FactSet consensus estimates. Citi’s survey respondents are enthusiastic, as fund managers have the highest expectations for financials out of any other sector.</p>\n<p>But maybe large-cap land isn’t even the best spot at this juncture. Small-cap value looks set for gains from here. Small caps are often more volatile than large caps. Smaller companies lack the ballast of steady sales and earnings, and changes in the economy create choppy conditions for them. Plus, the hit to earnings is more of a threat to smaller companies, which often have less access to capital; when they emerge from a recession, their shares emerge robustly. Smaller value names might be best to capture the upswing—value-oriented companies are mature in their life cycles, and their performance is more tied to economic growth, whereas revenue for companies still growing is dependent on longer-term industry changes.</p>\n<p>Value stocks in the Russell 2000 Index trade at tolerable levels, clearing the way for earnings momentum to carry these stocks higher. The forward-earnings multiple there is almost 35% below that of growth stocks on the index. Growth stocks often trade at between a 15% to 20% valuation premium to value, according to Yardeni Research. But there are pockets of opportunity\nSince Sept. 23, when investors resumed buying up assets most tethered to the direction of the economy, the S&P 500 has risen 22%. Investors expect a sharp economic rebound, as Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered quickly and trillions of dollars of fiscal stimulus has shored up demand. Much of that is now priced in, and valuations are fairly rich, leaving some to wonder if the market has seen the best of its gains for the near term.\nThat anxiety is evident in a Citigroup (ticker: C) survey of institutional investors. A “plurality” of those surveyed, according to the bank’s strategists, expect the S&P 500 to move past 4,100 by the end of the year. That implies less than a 4% gain from the index’s current level. The average call for the S&P 500, though, was for a gain just under 1%.\nBettter opportunities may lie within the broader market. Financials is the cheapest large-capitalization sector in the country, with S&P 500 financials trading at a forward-earnings multiple 32% lower than the average on the broader index. Earnings growth for the sector is set to explode in the next few quarters—especially for banks—as long-dated interest rates have risen and have more room to rise. At such low valuations, earnings may not be priced into the stocks. As rates rise and lending activity remains strong, earnings can post low-double-digit growth though 2022, according to FactSet consensus estimates. Citi’s survey respondents are enthusiastic, as fund managers have the highest expectations for financials out of any other sector.\nBut maybe large-cap land isn’t even the best spot at this juncture. Small-cap value looks set for gains from here. Small caps are often more volatile than large caps. Smaller companies lack the ballast of steady sales and earnings, and changes in the economy create choppy conditions for them. Plus, the hit to earnings is more of a threat to smaller companies, which often have less access to capital; when they emerge from a recession, their shares emerge robustly. Smaller value names might be best to capture the upswing—value-oriented companies are mature in their life cycles, and their performance is more tied to economic growth, whereas revenue for companies still growing is dependent on longer-term industry changes.\nValue stocks in the Russell 2000 Index trade at tolerable levels, clearing the way for earnings momentum to carry these stocks higher. The forward-earnings multiple there is almost 35% below that of growth stocks on the index. Growth stocks often trade at between a 15% to 20% valuation premium to value, according to Yardeni Research. The iShares Russell 2000 Value ETF (IWN) is expected to see earnings per share double this year, and to rise another rise another 25% in 2022.\nSimply riding the S&P 500 may no longer be a top
