But, we’re confident,” Cook told CNBC.Apple’s gross margin was also unusually elevated for the company. Amid multiple signs that SPCE stock could very well continue to crash during this trip, I continue to recommend that investors find a way to disembark from Virgin.
\n
Source: Christopher Penler / Shutterstock.com
\n
More specifically, past technical issues, insider stock sales, and tough upcoming competition are among the reasons that I continue to be bearish on the name.
\n
Past Technical Issues
\n
As I noted in my Januarycolumn on SPCE stock, ” On Dec. 13, 2020, during an attempted spaceflight, the engine of Virgin’s space vehicle‘did not fully igniteas it attempted to launch,’ company CEO Michael Colglazier reported.” Further, he said the ship’s computer had “lost connection” with the “‘rocket motor’ {and} the launch was automatically terminated.”
\n
In that article, I explained why I thought that the incident would deter wealthy individuals from joining Virgin Galactic’s space journeys. But, with such voyages seemingly unlikely to launch for some time, a bigger concern for the owners of SPCE stock is how the company’s upcoming test flights will go. On May 20, the companystated that its next “test flight”is slated to take place on May 22, “subject to weather and technical checks,”Yahoo Financereported.
\n
But after January’s incident, I fear that there could be other mishaps during tests that could cause SPCE stock to plunge. I think that such issues could harm the shares later this week and over the longer term.
\n
Also not helping my confidence in the upcoming test flightare issues that Virgin has identified with the mothership that seems likely to be used during the test and the “repeated delays” of the test flight.
\n
Over the longer term, Virgin Galactic isreportedly looking to take civiliansto space next year. Any further delays of that target could very well cause its shares to crater.
\n
Billionaires’ Stock Sales Aren’t Reassuring
\n
Another reason to be extremely cautious on SPCE stock is that, in recent months, two billionaires have sold massive amounts of the shares.
\n
Specifically, asInvestorPlacereporter Sarah Smithnoted last month, Richard Branson, who launched Virgin Galactic, sold $150 million of the company’s stock, leaving him “with a stake worth roughly $1.6 billion.” And in March, billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya unloaded all of his shares, receiving $200 million for his stake.
\n
As Smith wrote, famed investor Peter Lynch has said that insiders sell stocks for many reasons, including their “need for some money to send a kid to college.” And, for exactly that reason, it’s true that the stock sales of company insiders are not always alarming. She also pointed out that Branson is believed to have sold his shares to fund other investments.
\n
But nonetheless, there are a few reasons why I think that theses stock sales are worrisome. First of all, they occurred within several weeks of each other. Secondly, Palihapitiya sold his entire stake in the company.
\n
And finally, both men are billionaires, not CFOs or company vice presidents whose net worth may be something like $10 million to $15 million. They’re not even CEOs who may be worth close to $100 million.
\n
I think it’s more than reasonable to assume that Branson and Palihapitiya, unlike most top company executives, have dozens of sources from which to easily raise many millions of dollars of cash. Amid multiple signs that SPCE stock could very well continue to crash during this trip, I continue to recommend that investors find a way to disembark from Virgin.\nSource: Christopher Penler / Shutterstock.com\nMore specifically, past technical issues, insider stock sales, and tough upcoming competition are among the reasons that I continue to be bearish on the name.\nPast Technical Issues\nAs I noted in my Januarycolumn on SPCE stock, ” On Dec. 13, 2020, during an attempted spaceflight, the engine of Virgin’s space vehicle‘did not fully igniteas it attempted to launch,’ company CEO Michael Colglazier reported.” Further, he said the ship’s computer had “lost connection” with the “‘rocket motor’ {and} the launch was automatically terminated.”\nIn that article, I explained why I thought that the incident would deter wealthy individuals from joining Virgin Galactic’s space journeys. But, with such voyages seemingly unlikely to launch for some time, a bigger concern for the owners of SPCE stock is how the company’s upcoming test flights will go. On May 20, the companystated that its next “test flight”is slated to take place on May 22, “subject to weather and technical checks,”Yahoo Financereported.\nBut after January’s incident, I fear that there could be other mishaps during tests that could cause SPCE stock to plunge. I think that such issues could harm the shares later this week and over the longer term.\nAlso not helping my confidence in the upcoming test flightare issues that Virgin has identified with the mothership that seems likely to be used during the test and the “repeated delays” of the test flight.\nOver the longer term, Virgin Galactic isreportedly looking to take civiliansto space next year. Any further delays of that target could very well cause its shares to crater.\nBillionaires’ Stock Sales Aren’t Reassuring\nAnother reason to be extremely cautious on SPCE stock is that, in recent months, two billionaires have sold massive amounts of the shares.\nSpecifically, asInvestorPlacereporter Sarah Smithnoted last month, Richard Branson, who launched Virgin Galactic, sold $150 million of the company’s stock, leaving him “with a stake worth roughly $1.6 billion.” And in March, billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya unloaded all of his shares, receiving $200 million for his stake.\nAs Smith wrote, famed investor Peter Lynch has said that insiders sell stocks for many reasons, including their “need for some money to send a kid to college.” And, for exactly that reason, it’s true that the stock sales of company insiders are not always alarming. She also pointed out that Branson is believed to have sold his shares to fund other investments.\nBut nonetheless, there are a few reasons why I think that theses stock sales are worrisome. First of all, they occurred within several weeks of each other. Secondly, Palihapitiya sold his entire stake in the company.\nAnd finally, both men are billionaires, not CFOs or company vice presidents whose net worth may be something like $10 million to $15 million. They’re not even CEOs who may be worth close to $100 million.\nI think it’s more than reasonable to assume that Branson and Palihapitiya, unlike most top company executives, have dozens of sources from which to easily raise many millions of dollars of cash. The fact that both, within a short time of each other, chose to raise a great deal (even for them) of cash by selling SPCE stock, should, I think, worry those who own the company’s shares.\nIncreased Competition\nOver the longer term, as Smith reported in February, Virgin Galactic is going to be facing some very difficult competition. After leavingAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) next quarter, Jeff Bezos is going to have more time to focus on his own space tourism company,Blue Origin, which is slated to launch its ownspace flight by the end of next year. And, by December, Elon Musk’sSpaceXplans tolaunch its own civilian space mission.\nFacing off against two of the most successful and disruptive CEOs of the current generation may not be an easy task for Virgin Galactic.\nThe Bottom Line on SPCE Stock\nWith Virgin Galactic facing very difficult challenges and showing troublesome signs, its shares are a sell.\nOn the date of publication, Larry Ramer did not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article. The opinions expressed in this article are those of the writer, subject to the InvestorPlace.com Publishing Guidelines.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SPCE":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":254,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192343171,"gmtCreate":1621152094193,"gmtModify":1634193703502,"author":{"id":"3571571652270606","authorId":"3571571652270606","name":"Angelicious","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8d6b3ad2e386906d2452bb855ce86640","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3571571652270606","authorIdStr":"3571571652270606"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Comment","listText":"Comment","text":"Comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/192343171","repostId":"1163454382","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1163454382","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1621004581,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1163454382?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-05-14 23:03","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why AMC Entertainment Stock Jumped Again Friday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1163454382","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"AMC investors have reason for more optimism on the heels of another capital raise.Yesterday's jump came after the company announcedit raised $428 million. stocks lifted the Dow Jones Industrial Average off its low on Thursday to close the session near the flatline, while better-than-expected labor market data helped support sentiment. The blue-chip Dow closed down just 23.34 points, or less than 0.1%, at 34,577.04 after shedding 265 points at its session low. The S&P 500 declined 0.4% to 4,192.85 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 1% to 13,614.51.The benchmark S&P 500 sits about 1% from its all-time high reached earlier last month, but it has been stuck around these levels for about the last two weeks. The S&P 500 is up more than 11% this year so far.Merck and Dow Inc. were the two best performers in the 30-stock benchmark, both rising more than 2%. Consumer staples and utilities were the biggest gainers among 11 S&P 500 sectors, while consumer discretionary and tech weighed on the broader market, falling 1.2% and 0.9%, respectively.Shares of General Motors climbed nearly 6.4% after the company said it expects its results for the first half of 2021 to be “significantly better” than its prior guidance. On the data front, private job growth for May accelerated at its fastest pace in nearly a year as companies hired nearly a million workers, according to a report Thursday from payroll processing firm ADP.Total hires came to 978,000 for the month, a big jump from April’s 654,000 and the largest gain since June 2020. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for 680,000.Meanwhile,first-time claims for unemployment benefitsfor the week ended May 29 totaled 385,000, versus a Dow Jones estimate of 393,000. It also marked the first time that jobless claims fell below 400,000 since the early days of the pandemic.“With ADP knocking it out of the park, and jobless claims breaking that 400k barrier—a pandemic low—all eyes will be on the larger jobs picture tomorrow,” said Mike Loewengart, a managing director at E-Trade. “With seemingly all systems go on the jobs front, the economy is flashing some very real signs that this isn’t just a comeback—expansion mode could be on the horizon.”The market may be on hold before the release of the jobs report Friday, which is likely to show an additional 671,000 nonfarm payrolls in May, according to economists polled by Dow Jones. The economy added 266,000 jobs in April.Investors continued to monitor the wild action in meme stocks, particularly theater chain AMC Entertainment. The stock tumbled as much as 30% after practically doubling in the prior session, but shares cut losses after movie theater chain said it completed a stock offering launched just hours ago, raising $587 million. The stock ended the day about 18% lower.Other meme stocks also came under pressure Thursday. Bed Bath & Beyond fell more than 27%. The SoFi Social 50 ETF (SFYF), which tracks the top 50 most widely held U.S. listed stocks on SoFi’s retail brokerage platform, tumbled more than 6%.Reminiscent of what occurred earlier this year, retail traders rallying together on Reddit triggered a short squeeze in AMC earlier this week. On Wednesday, short-sellers betting against the stock lost $2.8 billion as the shares surged, according to S3 Partners. That brings their year-to-date losses to more than $5 billion, according to S3. Short sellers are forced to buy back the stock to cut their losses when it keeps rallying like this. The meme stock bubble in GameStop earlier this year weighed on the market a bit as investors worried it meant too much speculative activity was in the stock market. As losses in hedge funds betting against the stock mounted, worries increased about a pullback in risk-taking across Wall Street that could hit the overall market. AMC’s latest surge did not appear to be causing similar concerns so far. Here are company's financial statementsSlack tops Q1 expectations, ends quarter with 169,000 total paid customersLululemon first-quarter sales rise 88%, topping estimates, as store traffic reboundsCrowdStrike stock rises as earnings, outlook top Street viewDocuSign stock pops on earnings, outlook beat","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"AMC":0.9,"GM":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":325,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192346077,"gmtCreate":1621152319899,"gmtModify":1634193700594,"author":{"id":"3571571652270606","authorId":"3571571652270606","name":"Angelicious","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8d6b3ad2e386906d2452bb855ce86640","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3571571652270606","authorIdStr":"3571571652270606"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Comment","listText":"Comment","text":"Comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/192346077","repostId":"1163454382","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1163454382","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1621004581,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1163454382?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-05-14 23:03","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why AMC Entertainment Stock Jumped Again Friday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1163454382","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"AMC investors have reason for more optimism on the heels of another capital raise.Yesterday's jump came after the company announcedit raised $428 million.
