Wall Street’s assessment suggests that the stock price may have moved ahead of fundamentals, as MRNA has gained more than 1,200% since the COVID-19 pandemic started.</p>\n<p>The most recent report on Moderna stock came from Piper Sandler’s Edward Tenthoff, who reiterated his buy recommendation and forecasted a $348 price target on the back of Omicron news. The analyst sees the company prepared for the emergence of new variants and \"ideally suited to rapidly swap in new versions of the Spike antigen\" to make new COVID-19 vaccines.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley’s Matthew Harrison reiterated his neutral rating on MRNA a week ago with a $313 price target. The analyst mentioned that the announcement of Moderna’s flu vaccine data before year-end could be a positive catalyst for the stock. If the results are positive, the market could price in about $10 billion in long-term flu and COVID vaccine revenue, bumping shares by 10%.</p>\n<p><b>Pfizer: moderate buy, but experts are skeptical</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street is currently bullish on Pfizer, based on stock ratings. However, average price target consensus suggests that valuations could be stretched thin, following the November rally. PFE has a moderate buy recommendation based on 13 reports and a $50 average price target.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan‘s Chris Schott raised the firm's price target on Pfizer to $53 from $42 and kept a neutral rating. Covid remains a focal point of the Pfizer story, and Comirnaty and Paxlovid sales are \"set to clearly exceed expectations”. While the analyst sees limited upside from the company's core business, he would not be surprised to see shares rally in the near-term on omicron headlines.</p>\n<p>The most recent update on PFE came from Mizuho Securities’ Vamil Divan. He is skeptical on Pfizer stock and sees 16% downside risk. But according to the analyst, Omicron may increase near-term demand for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, especially for booster doses.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street Memes’ take</b></p>\n<p>COVID-19 vaccine makers may naturally benefit in the near-term from Omicron fears. Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>\n<p>Boeing's new version of its best-selling 777 twin aisle wide-body jet has been beset by delays, while supply chain issues have hit both manufacturers.</p>\n<p>Etihad, which is in the midst of a five year downsizing to become what it calls a \"mid-sized carrier\", has 26 A320neo jets and 25 777X on order, according to the planemakers.</p>\n<p>It would continue to take deliveries of Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner liner jets, which Douglas said would become the backbone of the fleet that will trim to 65 aircraft.</p>\n<p>Etihad has 93 aircraft, according to its website. Douglas also said the existing 30-strong A320 fleet would likely be halved as operations reduce with a focus on profitable routes.</p>\n<p>It already plans to phase out its 5 777-300ER jets from the passenger fleet and has grounded its 10 Airbus A380s since the start of the pandemic.</p>\n<p>\"When the market comes back sustainability, then we will look at how we will scale up. The recovery process from a once-in-a-generation black-swan event won’t be easy. And that leads us to another old expression: let the buyer beware.</p>\n<p><b>A Closer Look at AMC Stock</b></p>\n<p>AMC Entertainment reported its first-quarter fiscal data on May 6, and we’ll certainly dive into the details of that.</p>\n<p>First, though, I’d like to put a microscope to the market’s reaction to the earnings report.</p>\n<p>The following trading day, AMC stock jumped 5.67%, closing at $9.51. That’s a pretty clear signal from the market that it felt good about the company’s financial results.</p>\n<p>At the same time, investors should know that the company’s trailing 12-month earnings per share is -$15.60. That’s not great, especially for a stock trading today around $10..</p>\n<p>With that in mind, let’s rewind a bit. Back in mid-January, AMC stock was trading at around $2.</p>\n<p>Then the Reddit crowd pounced on it, and the share price quickly rocketed to a 52-week high of $20.36.</p>\n<p>Sensible minds advised caution at that time, but their warnings often fell upon deaf ears. By mid-February, the stock price had declined to $5 and change.</p>\n<p>Since that time, AMC stock has wiggled and wobbled in both directions. Clearly, this isn’t a stock that anyone should pour his or her life savings into. Small position sizes should be the rule, not the exception.</p>\n<p><b>Sorry, Not a Winner</b></p>\n<p>If you only look at the market’s reaction to AMC’s first-quarter data release, you might assume that it was a winning quarter in terms of earnings.</p>\n<p>However, that’s not the case. As it turns out, AMC reported a first-quarter loss of $567.2 million, which translates to $1.42 a share. Analysts, on average, were expecting the company to lose $1.31 per share.</p>\n<p>So, that was a “miss” for AMC. The quarterly revenues were also a “miss” as the company reported $148.3 million, versus the analysts’ average forecast of $156.3 million in revenues.</p>\n<p>To use percentages instead of dollar amounts, AMC’s first-quarter revenuesfell by a whopping 84.3%on a year-over-year basis. Furthermore, the company sustained an 88.8% decline in attendance due to the Covid-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p><b>Quoting Churchill?</b></p>\n<p>Under normal circumstances, the foregoing stats should induce a share-price decline. But then, we’d be hard-pressed to find evidence that these are “normal” circumstances.</p>\n<p>Possibly, the market reacted positively to Aron’s statement during the conference call that “our market share in the United States has soared, increasing by about 25% compared to prepandemic levels.”</p>\n<p>That’s impressive, but for me, the revenues are the top line and the earnings are the bottom line.</p>\n<p>It’s fine to see butts in seats, but an investor should want to see dollars in hand. Again, recall the -$15.60 per share trailing 12-month earnings I cited earlier.</p>\n<p>I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t too pleased with the CEO quoting Winston Churchill during the conference call:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “‘This is not the end. It not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning.’… “Sir Winston won his titanic fight. I believe that AMC will win our war too.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>I won’t dare say that Aron is arrogant, or that he’s starting to lose his mind. The S&P 500 dropped 2% amid uncertainty. One of the few gainers was Moderna stock, which jumped 20% on Friday’s trading session, while Pfizer stock was up a more modest 2.5%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b55d87c377ec124bb84173bfb955b9fa\" tg-width=\"689\" tg-height=\"621\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 1: SPY, MRNA and PFE performance in the past 5-trading days.</span></p>\n<p>Between two of the main COVID-19 vaccine makers, we assess Moderna and Pfizer stocks and ask ourselves: which is a better buy as Omicron fear lingers?</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street is neutral on Moderna</b></p>\n<p>Moderna stock currently has a hold consensus among 13 analysts and an average price target of $298, which suggests 17% downside from current levels. Wall Street’s assessment suggests that the stock price may have moved ahead of fundamentals, as MRNA has gained more than 1,200% since the COVID-19 pandemic started.</p>\n<p>The most recent report on Moderna stock came from Piper Sandler’s Edward Tenthoff, who reiterated his buy recommendation and forecasted a $348 price target on the back of Omicron news. The analyst sees the company prepared for the emergence of new variants and \"ideally suited to rapidly swap in new versions of the Spike antigen\" to make new COVID-19 vaccines.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley’s Matthew Harrison reiterated his neutral rating on MRNA a week ago with a $313 price target. The analyst mentioned that the announcement of Moderna’s flu vaccine data before year-end could be a positive catalyst for the stock. If the results are positive, the market could price in about $10 billion in long-term flu and COVID vaccine revenue, bumping shares by 10%.</p>\n<p><b>Pfizer: moderate buy, but experts are skeptical</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street is currently bullish on Pfizer, based on stock ratings. However, average price target consensus suggests that valuations could be stretched thin, following the November rally. PFE has a moderate buy recommendation based on 13 reports and a $50 average price target.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan‘s Chris Schott raised the firm's price target on Pfizer to $53 from $42 and kept a neutral rating. Covid remains a focal point of the Pfizer story, and Comirnaty and Paxlovid sales are \"set to clearly exceed expectations”. While the analyst sees limited upside from the company's core business, he would not be surprised to see shares rally in the near-term on omicron headlines.</p>\n<p>The most recent update on PFE came from Mizuho Securities’ Vamil Divan. He is skeptical on Pfizer stock and sees 16% downside risk. But according to the analyst, Omicron may increase near-term demand for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, especially for booster doses.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street Memes’ take</b></p>\n<p>COVID-19 vaccine makers may naturally benefit in the near-term from Omicron fears. Moderna, for instance, has risen more than 1,200% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, while Pfizer stock has climbed 79% during the same period.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/198c43532bf2d097bc94e078b539a044\" tg-width=\"684\" tg-height=\"577\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 2: MRNA and PFE performance in the past 5-years.</span></p>\n<p>Pfizer is much larger than Moderna, with a market cap size of $300 billion compared to Moderna’s $133 billion. Both companies have strong vaccine pipelines and technology, but Moderna likely benefits from the current pandemic for being more of a pure-play stock.</p>\n<p>Due to business model diversification, we see MRNA as a better short-term bet on COVID-19 developments. However, for this same reason and due to richer 2023 P/E of 32x, the stock is likely to be more volatile and present higher downside risk. The company did have its momentum of despair in the first two months of 2020. Not bogged down by the adverse geopolitical milieu, the EV startup chose to be proactive instead. The company announced several innovative product andservice offerings.</p><p>Deliveries continued to climb through the year, with Nio's charismatic CEO William Bin attributing the strength to the growing recognition of its premium brand, the competitive and compelling products and services, the expanding sales network, and most importantly, the support from its passionate and loyal user community.</p><p>For 2020, Nio delivered 43,728 vehicles, an increase of 111% year-over-year.</p><p>The company also managed to rein in costs, giving margins a lift. It also succeeded in mobilizing finances through a combination of equity, debt and strategic investments, removing a key existential risk it faced in 2019.</p><p>Promptly the stock began discounting the fundamental improvement and closed out 2020 with a gain in excess of 1,100%. The strong rally stretched valuation to levels, with some skeptics beginning to question the irrational exuberance in the stock.</p><p><b>Fundamentals, Stock Pause At Start of 2021:</b> Nio had a strong start to the year, as it continued to clock record monthly deliveries in January. Most of the factories were shut down for weeks, and many products that rely on shipping and manufacturing might have been delayed,\" Nio said in the post.</p><p><b>Is Recovery In The Cards:</b> The company has several catalysts ahead, including the launch of its first sedan, named ET7, and its plan to expand into Europe this year. The company is also making solid progress with respect to its advanced driver-assisted system, battery technology and battery swapping stations.</p><p>With the increasing uptake of its battery-as-a-service offering and its recently announced autonomous driving-as-a-service, the company has laid the groundwork for recurrent revenue streams.</p><p>This apart, the attractive market opportunity presented by the burgeoning EV market, both domestically and globally, will prove salubrious for the company. There is no denying the fact that EV manufacturing is turning out to be a crowded field.
