Net income from the quarter hit $80.5 million, or $1.19 per diluted share — well below analysts' projections but a significant improvement from the $21 million in net income it earned during its fiscal fourth quarter last year.
\n
For the full year 2020, GameStop posted a net loss of more than $215 million.
\n
One bright spot: The gaming retailer's global e-commerce sales increased 175%, representing 34% of the company's total net revenue during the quarter. During the same period last year, e-commerce made up just 12% of total sales.
\n
That bodes well for the company's effort to transition to relying more on online sales, a move that's especially important given that it closed a net 693 stores during 2020. It now has 4,816 stores globally.
\n
\"Our emphasis in 2021 will be on improving our e-commerce and customer experience, increasing our speed of delivery, providing superior customer service and expanding our catalogue,\" CEO George Sherman said in a statement.
\n
The company's stock initially jumped more than 5% in after-hours trading immediately following the release, before reversing to fall more than 10%. And while corporate earnings calls are typically dry events attended mostly by analysts and reporters, GameStop's Tuesday call hit max capacity and stopped allowing in additional listeners more than an hour before it began.
\n
The company's Tuesday earnings report is its first since a Reddit-fueled trading frenzy in late January took Gamestop's stock on a rollercoaster ride — and exposed a stark divide between investors betting that the struggling retailer's performance will worsen and those counting on a comeback.
\n
The company's stock quickly fell from its wild peaks during the January rally, but many investors haven't given up. Net income from the quarter hit $80.5 million, or $1.19 per diluted share — well below analysts' projections but a significant improvement from the $21 million in net income it earned during its fiscal fourth quarter last year.\nFor the full year 2020, GameStop posted a net loss of more than $215 million.\nOne bright spot: The gaming retailer's global e-commerce sales increased 175%, representing 34% of the company's total net revenue during the quarter. During the same period last year, e-commerce made up just 12% of total sales.\nThat bodes well for the company's effort to transition to relying more on online sales, a move that's especially important given that it closed a net 693 stores during 2020. It now has 4,816 stores globally.\n\"Our emphasis in 2021 will be on improving our e-commerce and customer experience, increasing our speed of delivery, providing superior customer service and expanding our catalogue,\" CEO George Sherman said in a statement.\nThe company's stock initially jumped more than 5% in after-hours trading immediately following the release, before reversing to fall more than 10%. And while corporate earnings calls are typically dry events attended mostly by analysts and reporters, GameStop's Tuesday call hit max capacity and stopped allowing in additional listeners more than an hour before it began.\nThe company's Tuesday earnings report is its first since a Reddit-fueled trading frenzy in late January took Gamestop's stock on a rollercoaster ride — and exposed a stark divide between investors betting that the struggling retailer's performance will worsen and those counting on a comeback.\nThe company's stock quickly fell from its wild peaks during the January rally, but many investors haven't given up. On Tuesday, GameStop shares closed down nearly 7% at $181.75, but were still more than 850% higher than where they started this year.\nGameStop's plan for the future\nThe earnings report also comes in the midst of an executive shakeup at GameStop that's likely the work of Ryan Cohen, the billionaire Chewy.com founder who invested heavily in GameStop last year and joined its board in January. Some stare at the falling unemployment numbers and see an economy well on its way to normal. Others worry they’re not falling fast enough and fear that lingering scars will hurt long-term growth.
\n
In fact, both groups may be right. Some stare at the falling unemployment numbers and see an economy well on its way to normal. Others worry they’re not falling fast enough and fear that lingering scars will hurt long-term growth.\nIn fact, both groups may be right. The near-term recovery looks quite strong, especially if another stimulus package extends enhanced unemployment benefits into the fall. And the stock market certainly senses that a glorious summer is coming into view.\nBut as companies take advantage of the shock to introduce cost-saving technologies and as consumers emerge from lockdowns with new habits, the same old jobs won’t all be there to fill. increasing acceptability of the digital asset.
\n
The big question observers are asking is, why is the Elon Musk-run company doing this?
\n
Monday, electric-car maker Tesla said in a public filing that it purchased $1.5 billion of bitcoin and that it expects to begin accepting payment in the cryptocurrency for its products in the future.
\n
The move by Tesla to invest in bitcoins was seen as further confirmation of the legitimacy of the nascent asset that didn’t exist until about 12 years ago.
\n
However, bitcoin is seen as a volatile asset that is prone to sharp price volatility and Monday’s announcement by Tesla was described by some corporate finance professionals as an unnecessary addition of risk to the vehicle maker’s balance sheet in the form of currency or a commodity, depending on how you classify bitcoin.
\n
While it’s not clear, at this point, why Musk & Co. have opted to expose the company to the possible risk of owning bitcoin, here are a few reasons why the revolutionary company may have aligned itself with the crypto crowd.
\n
Diversification
\n
Tesla made it clear in its statement filed with its regulator the Securities and Exchange Commission that it sees bitcoin as a chance to diversify its cash and cash-equivalent holdings.
\n
Corporations usually hold excess cash and/or cash-equivalents, like Treasury bills or commercial paper on their books to provide operational liquidity and generate returns while limiting risks.
\n
Tesla wrote, “we updated our investment policy to provide us with more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash that is not required to maintain adequate operating liquidity.”
\n
The move isn’t without risk, Tesla acknowledges as the price of bitcoin could slump.
\n
“If we hold digital assets and their values decrease relative to our purchase prices, our financial condition may be harmed,” the company acknowledges.
\n
But a single bitcoin, which has soared 62% so far this year, could easily be headed for a six-digit value if bullish momentum continues to build, which would make Musk look smart.
\n
Publicity stunt?
\n
“Thankfully, Elon Musk on Monday once again ensured no one would be bored, with the unexpected announcement that Tesla will buy bitcoin and accept them as payment for vehicles,” writes Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a Tuesday research note.
\n
The analyst referred to the move as a “publicity stunt,” a move that everbody is talking about, but there are a number of ways to think about it.
\n
Brand management
\n
Bitcoin is associated with a group of iconoclastic founders who were attempting to break the mold on payments and fiat money. That was the idea behind cryptos being written into code back in 2009 by a person or persons known as Satoshi Nakamoto.
\n
Those rebellious notions align somewhat with Musk’s own agenda of disruption. Tesla is making electric-powered vehicles in a world that has thus far been dominated by fossil-fuel driven cars.
\n
Moreover, Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model also is viewed as trendsetting, since many companies sell their cars through unaffiliated dealerships.
\n
Bitcoin’s image as a decentralized asset, not controlled by any one body, also fits with Tesla’s image and that of its leader Musk.
\n

\n
The future of $
\n
Tesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin could also be a simple hedge against the hegemony of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency since World War Two.
\n
Bitcoin, or something like it, represents the future of payment systems to many supporters, even if it isn’t currently an effective means of exchange due to its current volatility.
\n
“Yesterday’s move by Tesla to invest in bitcoin and start accepting it as payment for its own products really moved the needle,” wrote Simon Peters, cryptoasset analyst at multiasset investment platform eToro, in emailed comments.
\n
The eToro analyst said that there are unconfirmed talks about technology behemoths Apple Inc. and Google-parent Alphabet Inc.,linking it to their own payment systems.
\n
Musk is viewed as an innovator tied to electric vehicles, batteries and space exploration via SpaceX, but one of his early ventures was in payments.
\n
Writing on the wall
\n
The Wall Street Journal notes that, the Tesla CEO invested most of the $22 million he earned from the sale of an internet business into a new startup, X.com, which became PayPal Holdings about 20 years ago.
\n
PayPal currently is among the vanguard of bitcoin revolution. PayPal back in November opened up its cryptocurrency platform to all U.S. customers after conducting a more narrow rollout.
\n
Moreover, several high-profile Wall Street investors, including Stanley Druckenmiller and Paul Tudor Jones, have embraced bitcoin. Famed investor Bill Miller, founder of Miller Value Partners, in a letter to clients earlier this month published on the firm’s website, reaffirmed his bullish outlook on bitcoin.
\n
In other words, Tesla and Musk may be among the biggest to wade into the crypto pool, but a growing cadre of investors are starting to view the volatile digital-ledger-backed cryptos as a bona fide asset.
\n
“Corporate adoption takes another leap forward with Tesla announcement,” writes Devin Ryan, analyst at JMP Securities in a Monday research note.
\n
The researcher, along with fellow analyst Brian McKenna, noted they “believe the building ‘network effect’ around bitcoin is moving the broader crypto asset class into the mainstream, and with many hundreds of billions of dollars of value in infrastructure supporting the asset class, we see the already substantial (and growing) vested interest in its success as bullish for the industry.”
\n
On Tuesday, bitcoin touched a record high around $48,000 before pulling back, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite indexes have seen relatively tepid trade on the day.
","source":"market_watch","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Some stare at the falling unemployment numbers and see an economy well on its way to normal. Others worry they’re not falling fast enough and fear that lingering scars will hurt long-term growth.
\n
In fact, both groups may be right. The near-term recovery looks quite strong, especially if another stimulus package extends enhanced unemployment benefits into the fall. And the stock market certainly senses that a glorious summer is coming into view.
\n
But as companies take advantage of the shock to introduce cost-saving technologies and as consumers emerge from lockdowns with new habits, the same old jobs won’t all be there to fill. The crisis will leave more people settling for lower wages or dropping out of the labor force altogether, and it will take more than throwing money at the problem to heal the economic wounds.
\n
As shocking as the COVID-19 pandemic was for last year’s economy, the world’s synchronized policy response was even more surprising. Central banks cut rates, finance ministries cut checks and an astonishing effort to find a vaccine has now delivered several highly effective options.
\n
With all that money sloshing around the world, how can we not expect a sharp rebound? Even the seers at the European Commission upgraded economic forecasts last week, following a trend set by their counterparts at the International Monetary Fund and the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development.
\n
U.S. unemployment has more than halved from its 14.7% peak last March, while household savings are healthy and debts are low. Poorer households even report slightly higher incomes with that extra government support. Larger firms are awash in cash and banks have plenty of capacity to lend. As winter turns to spring, Americans are managing their cabin fever with plans for shopping sprees and exotic travel just as soon as they get that second shot.
\n
Ka-BOOM!
\n
Our central scenario is for a steady recovery this year, with another stimulus package that will boost growth above the Congressional Budget Office’s fresh 3.7% forecast. Unemployment should drift lower from the current 6.3% rate, but it’s going to be tough going because the details in the labor data show something far more worrying.
\n
Specifically, the long-term unemployment rate, which counts those Americans who have been out of work for more than 27 weeks, continues to rise in absolute terms and as a percentage of the overall unemployed. The labor participation rate has also taken a sharp spike lower, after just starting to recover following the global financial crisis.
\n

\n
Many of these lost jobs may indeed re-appear when all those people head back to the mall. But many of these trends are part of a story that stretches back to the 1960s when men aged 25-54 (so-called “prime age”) began falling out of the workforce because of a complex brew of forces that included global competition, technological innovation and weakening labor unions. Some of these trends were only just improving when the crisis hit.
\n
Meanwhile, we are only just beginning to understand the shock delivered to working women. Even as the recovery takes hold, some 80% of those who left the workforce in January were female.
\n
All recessions aggravate the mismatch between the jobs and the jobless, but this one may be worse. When crisis strikes, companies often add new technologies to cut operating costs. This time, though, there will be further disruption from new post-pandemic consumer patterns and preferences.
\n
When the recovery comes, as a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York points out, the new jobs won’t fit the skill sets of those who were let go. It’s not that a flight attendant can’t get land work at an online retailer’s logistics center, but it’s hardly automatic or comfortable.
\n
And, it’s not just a question of training. If their former employer doesn’t call them back to work as demand recovers, the hunt will be even longer. If the former employer went bankrupt, it’s even harder.By one measure, nearly a third of small businesses have closed since last January.
\n
These are not issues that can be addressed easily even with another stimulus package. The long-term unemployed, in particular, need support that is sufficient without undercutting incentives to return to the workforce, as economist Marco Annunziata points out. Some stare at the falling unemployment numbers and see an economy well on its way to normal. Others worry they’re not falling fast enough and fear that lingering scars will hurt long-term growth.\nIn fact, both groups may be right. The near-term recovery looks quite strong, especially if another stimulus package extends enhanced unemployment benefits into the fall. And the stock market certainly senses that a glorious summer is coming into view.\nBut as companies take advantage of the shock to introduce cost-saving technologies and as consumers emerge from lockdowns with new habits, the same old jobs won’t all be there to fill. The crisis will leave more people settling for lower wages or dropping out of the labor force altogether, and it will take more than throwing money at the problem to heal the economic wounds.\nAs shocking as the COVID-19 pandemic was for last year’s economy, the world’s synchronized policy response was even more surprising. Central banks cut rates, finance ministries cut checks and an astonishing effort to find a vaccine has now delivered several highly effective options.\nWith all that money sloshing around the world, how can we not expect a sharp rebound? Even the seers at the European Commission upgraded economic forecasts last week, following a trend set by their counterparts at the International Monetary Fund and the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development.\nU.S. unemployment has more than halved from its 14.7% peak last March, while household savings are healthy and debts are low. Poorer households even report slightly higher incomes with that extra government support. Larger firms are awash in cash and banks have plenty of capacity to lend. As winter turns to spring, Americans are managing their cabin fever with plans for shopping sprees and exotic travel just as soon as they get that second shot.\nKa-BOOM!\nOur central scenario is for a steady recovery this year, with another stimulus package that will boost growth above the Congressional Budget Office’s fresh 3.7% forecast. Unemployment should drift lower from the current 6.3% rate, but it’s going to be tough going because the details in the labor data show something far more worrying.\nSpecifically, the long-term unemployment rate, which counts those Americans who have been out of work for more than 27 weeks, continues to rise in absolute terms and as a percentage of the overall unemployed. The labor participation rate has also taken a sharp spike lower, after just starting to recover following the global financial crisis.\n\nMany of these lost jobs may indeed re-appear when all those people head back to the mall. But many of these trends are part of a story that stretches back to the 1960s when men aged 25-54 (so-called “prime age”) began falling out of the workforce because of a complex brew of forces that included global competition, technological innovation and weakening labor unions. Some of these trends were only just improving when the crisis hit.\nMeanwhile, we are only just beginning to understand the shock delivered to working women. Even as the recovery takes hold, some 80% of those who left the workforce in January were female.\nAll recessions aggravate the mismatch between the jobs and the jobless, but this one may be worse. When crisis strikes, companies often add new technologies to cut operating costs. This time, though, there will be further disruption from new post-pandemic consumer patterns and preferences.\nWhen the recovery comes, as a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York points out, the new jobs won’t fit the skill sets of those who were let go. It’s not that a flight attendant can’t get land work at an online retailer’s logistics center, but it’s hardly automatic or comfortable.\nAnd, it’s not just a question of training. If their former employer doesn’t call them back to work as demand recovers, the hunt will be even longer. If the former employer went bankrupt, it’s even harder.By one measure, nearly a third of small businesses have closed since last January.\nThese are not issues that can be addressed easily even with another stimulus package. The long-term unemployed, in particular, need support that is sufficient without undercutting incentives to return to the workforce, as economist Marco Annunziata points out. Progress will require investment in training and education, too, and may take a long time to deliver results.\nFor investors, the “good news,” if you want to call it that, is that these are long-standing trends that won’t likely undercut near-term market returns. The bad news is that by many measures, America’s workforce continues to deteriorate with all sorts of implications for long-term growth, let alone political stability.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":406,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":388904219,"gmtCreate":1613007454031,"gmtModify":1703768287622,"author":{"id":"3573607919761122","authorId":"3573607919761122","name":"4onemoreday","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d6bd2814e5f11f991de0ed780343b74","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573607919761122","authorIdStr":"3573607919761122"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Could be","listText":"Could be","text":"Could be","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/388904219","repostId":"1117067138","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":486,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
