Valuations more appealing</b></p>\n<p>In absolute terms, it is undeniable that Apple stock is a more affordable play than Amazon. The chart below shows how AMZN is substantially more richly valued than Apple, both in terms of trailing earnings (nearly twice more expensive) and free cash flow (substantially more expensive).</p>\n<p>In an environment in which assets are not priced for perfection, paying a bit more for what one might consider a better stock could make sense. Newly published data by JLL Capital Markets’ M&A and Corporate Advisory Group found REIT M&A activity has totaled $70 billion year-to-date, which puts it on target for surpassing the full-year record of $103 billion in volume set in 2006.\nMuch of this year's volume is coming from REIT subsectors that underperformed during 2020 but are now getting a new shot of energy. JLL reported the retail REIT subsector enjoyed a 46% gain year to date in 2021, with hospitality at 17%, office at 16%, and the multifamily housing, hotel, mall, office, shopping center and gaming Wealth Management in Minneapolis.</p><p>Strong inflation readings and signs of a worker shortage in recent weeks have fueled fears and roiled stock markets despite reassurances from Fed officials that the rise in prices would be temporary.</p><p>All three main indexes hit their session lows in morning trade after opening sharply lower, then partially recovered before the release of the Fed minutes The chart below shows how AMZN is substantially more richly valued than Apple, both in terms of trailing earnings (nearly twice more expensive) and free cash flow (substantially more expensive).</p>\n<p>In an environment in which assets are not priced for perfection, paying a bit more for what one might consider a better stock could make sense. (AAL) has seen a dramatic decline in passenger demand in the past year as the COVID-19 pandemic prompted many would-be travelers to stay home. The company's passenger volume in 2020 was less than half the 215 million people it transported a year earlier. On top of these financial pressures, American Airlines also faces an antitrust probe by the U.S. Department of Justice into its partnership with JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU) over concerns that the agreement may inflate passenger fares.</p>\n<p>Investors will look for how American Airlines addressing these challenges when the company reports Q1 FY 2021 earnings before the market open on April 22. Analysts predict that adjusted losses per share (EPS) will widen significantly year-over-year (YOY) as revenue falls for a fifth consecutive quarter.</p>\n<p>A key metric that investors may focus on in the earnings report is American Airlines' passenger load factor, a measure of airline efficiency that reflects the percentage of American Airlines' seating capacity that is being used. Analysts expect load factor to fall YOY and to be slightly lower than the latest reported quarter, which is Q4 FY 2020.</p>\n<p>American Airlines' stock has experienced multiple periods of intense volatility in the past year. In June 2020, shares surged ahead of the market, only to fall behind the next month. The stock largely traded sideways until it began a long rally in late October 2020. American's shares outperformed the market between December and mid-March, although they have fallen back somewhat in recent weeks. As of April 20, American Airlines has provided a 1-year trailing total return of 84.2%, far ahead of the S&amp;P 500's total return of 46.5%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a772a4903ebcc543efb55c065efb3928\" tg-width=\"2244\" tg-height=\"1210\"><span>Source: TradingView.</span></p>\n<h2>American Airlines Earning History </h2>\n<p>American Airlines' stock has been buoyed in recent months by its recent earnings history along with investor optimism about new COVID-19 vaccines and an emerging economic recovery. While the company posted four consecutive quarters of adjusted losses per share in FY 2020, American Airlines' losses narrowed significantly in Q3 and Q4. After American's Q3 earnings report in October, the stock initially dipped and then more than doubled over the next five months through the end of March 2021. But now, analysts predict that American's earnings recovery will reverse. They see Q1 FY 2021 adjusted losses per share widening YOY, and also on a sequential basis relative to Q4 FY 2020.</p>\n<p>American Airlines has also reported four straight quarters of YOY revenue declines, also the first in several years. Revenue dipped by 19.6% YOY for Q1 FY 2020, a reflection of the impact of the pandemic on the later portion of that quarter. Revenue then plunged 86.4% in Q2 FY 2020, followed by a 73.4% drop in Q3 and 64.4% in Q4. This key metric for the airline industry is a measure of the percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers. Higher load factors indicate a higher percentage of seats that are occupied by passengers. Airlines experience roughly fixed costs to send an aircraft into flight regardless of the number of passengers on board, so there is an incentive to fill as many seats as possible in order to better distribute those costs. For this reason, a higher load factor is a sign of greater efficiency and profitability. In the past year, however, there have been strong pressures against load factor, primarily because the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the above logic on its head. Fuller planes are seen as worse from a public health perspective during a pandemic. As fewer passengers travel and load factor drops, companies like American Airlines face a profitability crisis.</p>\n<p>American Airlines' load factor has fallen sharply during the pandemic. In the three years prior to 2020, the company regularly reported a load factor in the 80s. This metric first began to fall in Q1 FY 2020, when the company reported a load factor of 72.7%. That dropped to a low of 42.3% in Q2 and then recovered somewhat through the second half of the year, reaching 64.1% for Q4. Analysts now estimate that American's progress in turning around its load factor will essentially halt. In Q1 FY 2021, they estimate that load factor will fall slightly, to 63.5%, on a sequential basis. Moreover, the company is gradually bringing moviegoers back to cinemas in Europe.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, AMC CEOAdam Aron has admitted that the company&nbsp; nearly filed for bankruptcy five times during the Covid-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p>As the old expression goes, we’re not out of the woods yet. The recovery process from a once-in-a-generation black-swan event won’t be easy. And that leads us to another old expression: let the buyer beware.</p>\n<p><b>A Closer Look at AMC Stock</b></p>\n<p>AMC Entertainment reported its first-quarter fiscal data on May 6, and we’ll certainly dive into the details of that.</p>\n<p>First, though, I’d like to put a microscope to the market’s reaction to the earnings report.</p>\n<p>The following trading day, AMC stock jumped 5.67%, closing at $9.51. That’s a pretty clear signal from the market that it felt good about the company’s financial results.</p>\n<p>At the same time, investors should know that the company’s trailing 12-month earnings per share is -$15.60. That’s not great, especially for a stock trading today around $10..</p>\n<p>With that in mind, let’s rewind a bit. Back in mid-January, AMC stock was trading at around $2.</p>\n<p>Then the Reddit crowd pounced on it, and the share price quickly rocketed to a 52-week high of $20.36.</p>\n<p>Sensible minds advised caution at that time, but their warnings often fell upon deaf ears. By mid-February, the stock price had declined to $5 and change.</p>\n<p>Since that time, AMC stock has wiggled and wobbled in both directions. Clearly, this isn’t a stock that anyone should pour his or her life savings into. Small position sizes should be the rule, not the exception.</p>\n<p><b>Sorry, Not a Winner</b></p>\n<p>If you only look at the market’s reaction to AMC’s first-quarter data release, you might assume that it was a winning quarter in terms of earnings.</p>\n<p>However, that’s not the case. As it turns out, AMC reported a first-quarter loss of $567.2 million, which translates to $1.42 a share. Analysts, on average, were expecting the company to lose $1.31 per share.</p>\n<p>So, that was a “miss” for AMC. The quarterly revenues were also a “miss” as the company reported $148.3 million, versus the analysts’ average forecast of $156.3 million in revenues.</p>\n<p>To use percentages instead of dollar amounts, AMC’s first-quarter revenuesfell by a whopping 84.3%on a year-over-year basis. Furthermore, the company sustained an 88.8% decline in attendance due to the Covid-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p><b>Quoting Churchill?</b></p>\n<p>Under normal circumstances, the foregoing stats should induce a share-price decline. But then, we’d be hard-pressed to find evidence that these are “normal” circumstances.</p>\n<p>Possibly, the market reacted positively to Aron’s statement during the conference call that “our market share in the United States has soared, increasing by about 25% compared to prepandemic levels.”</p>\n<p>That’s impressive, but for me, the revenues are the top line and the earnings are the bottom line.</p>\n<p>It’s fine to see butts in seats, but an investor should want to see dollars in hand. Again, recall the -$15.60 per share trailing 12-month earnings I cited earlier.</p>\n<p>I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t too pleased with the CEO quoting Winston Churchill during the conference call:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “‘This is not the end. It not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning.’… “Sir Winston won his titanic fight. I believe that AMC will win our war too.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>I won’t dare say that Aron is arrogant, or that he’s starting to lose his mind.
