ABNB stock slid 34% from its March highs and is trading at just $135 as of this writing.</p><p>However, with the economic recovery ahead, Airbnb is looking at a strong rebound. Airlines and hotels will see a boost in demand but are unlikely to reach their pre-Covid levels for at least a couple of years. Airbnb, on the other hand, will see a quicker recovery as people opt for destinations closer to home and less densely populated places.</p><p>As such, investors eager for exposure to the economic recovery will find this stock a great play.</p><p><b>Why I’m Bullish on ABNB Stock</b></p><p>With the markets overheating and the recent tech sell-off, investors may be tempted to put Airbnb stock in the sell bucket. However, as with all good investments, it’s worth considering the fundamental value that this investment offers in the long haul. Like many businesses, Airbnb took a major hit during the pandemic but weathered the storm with ease.</p><p>As travel came to a standstill last year, Airbnb’s bookingsdropped by 85%. Management expected to see revenue dip by half, but the company ended the year with $3.4 billion in the books. That’s a 30% decline from 2019.</p><p>Coming into 2021, things are really looking up for Airbnb. In the first quarter of this year, the company reported a 5% increase in year-over-year revenue. That’s an impressive feat, given that it is still recovering from the pandemic.</p><p>Adding to this, Airbnb has a strong liquidity position, with positive cash flow from operations. The total cash balance and short-term investments in the books are three times higher than debt. This gives the vacation rental company plenty of room to expand its core operations this year. With better-than-expected earnings in its most recent quarter, Airbnb remains optimistic about its future growth. The company estimates revenues will grow by approximately 40% this year.</p><p>Finally, it’s worth considering the pent-up demand for travel. With over a third of the U.S. population vaccinated, people will be looking to travel this summer. However, many will want to avoid crowded places like hotels, making Airbnb’s rentals the perfect option. The company can capitalize on its worldwide presence and expand its current offering to benefit from the new age of travel.</p><p><b>Prices Are Low. Is It Time To Buy?</b></p><p>Despite a strong earnings report, ABNB stock was down 3% following the announcement. Many have attributed the decline to a limited chance of a rebound in the new normal. One part of this has to do with the increased competition in the space. According to Boris Schlossberg, managing director of FX strategy at BK Asset Management, Airbnb isfacing a lot of competitionin the vacation rental space.</p><p>Companies like VRBO, which is owned by&nbsp;<b>Expedia Group</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>EXPE</u></b>), hold a key position in vacation rental properties and are giving Airbnb “a run for its money” says Schlossberg. On the other hand, high rental fees on the platform are discouraging prospective customers from choosing Airbnb.</p><p>While the timeline for a full recovery is still unclear, I think Airbnb is still worth betting on. We are still very much in the early transitory phases towards a new normal. When people feel safe to hop on planes once again, ABNB stock will see a reversal of fortunes. Until then shares are likely to pull back some more.</p><p>The current dip in prices signals a great buying opportunity for future growth.</p><p><b>The Bottom Line</b></p><p>Stocks have dropped from their vaccine-news highs but as we return to some sense of normalcy, ABNB stock is poised for a strong comeback. The company’s strong liquidity position coupled with its key position in the vacation rental market will serve as huge tailwinds. Airbnb, on the other hand, will see a quicker recovery as people opt for destinations closer to home and less densely populated places.As such, investors eager for exposure to the economic recovery will find this stock a great play.Why I’m Bullish on ABNB StockWith the markets overheating and the recent tech sell-off, investors may be tempted to put Airbnb stock in the sell bucket. However, as with all good investments, it’s worth considering the fundamental value that this investment offers in the long haul. Like many businesses, Airbnb took a major hit during the pandemic but weathered the storm with ease.As travel came to a standstill last year, Airbnb’s bookingsdropped by 85%. Management expected to see revenue dip by half, but the company ended the year with $3.4 billion in the books. That’s a 30% decline from 2019.Coming into 2021, things are really looking up for Airbnb. In the first quarter of this year, the company reported a 5% increase in year-over-year revenue. That’s an impressive feat, given that it is still recovering from the pandemic.Adding to this, Airbnb has a strong liquidity position, with positive cash flow from operations. The total cash balance and short-term investments in the books are three times higher than debt. This gives the vacation rental company plenty of room to expand its core operations this year. With better-than-expected earnings in its most recent quarter, Airbnb remains optimistic about its future growth. The company estimates revenues will grow by approximately 40% this year.Finally, it’s worth considering the pent-up demand for travel. With over a third of the U.S. population vaccinated, people will be looking to travel this summer. However, many will want to avoid crowded places like hotels, making Airbnb’s rentals the perfect option. The company can capitalize on its worldwide presence and expand its current offering to benefit from the new age of travel.Prices Are Low. As recently as April 29, this average exposure level stood at plus 83.6%.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d550f647619d600d419397967f7bb778\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"928\"></p>\n<p>That reflects a remarkably quick rush for the exits — 94.3 percentage points in just 10 trading sessions. In fact, out of the 5,000+ trading days since 2000, there have been only 18 — 0.3% — in which the HNNSI’s decline over the trailing 10 days was greater.</p>\n<p>To appreciate the contrarian significance of this, consider that, on average following those past few occasions when the HNNSI declined by this much and this fast, the Nasdaq Composite was 5.3% higher in one month’s time.</p>\n<p>Why, then, haven’t the contrarians become more bullish? The answer is also evident in the chart: The HNNSI’s plunge over the past 10 days stopped well short of the excessive bearish zone, defined as being in the bottom 10% of the historical distribution. That zone is represented by the beige-shaded box at the bottom of the chart.</p>\n<p>The last time the HNNSI fell into that zone was in March 2020. The spectacular implosion of hedge fund Archegos Capital Management, much like the GameStop saga earlier this year, serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by extreme leverage, secret derivatives and rock-bottom interest rates.</p>\n<p>ViacomCBS (VIACA), Discovery (DISCA) and other media titans' stocks crashed Friday as Wall Street banks that lent to Archegos forced the firm to unwind its bets. The epic firesale wiped out more than half of Viacom's value last week alone.</p>\n<p>Major banks face billions of dollars in losses from their exposure to Archegos. Both Credit Suisse (CS) and Nomura tumbled Monday after warning of significant hits to their earnings.</p>\n<p>The most startling part about the tale of Archegos is that it is a firm that few people had ever heard of before this weekend. And yet in this era of easy money, Archegos was able to borrow so much that its failure created shockwaves large enough to ripple across Wall Street — and impact everyday Americans' retirement accounts.</p>\n<p>\"It's a wake-up call. With leverage, comes risk,\" said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities Corporation. \"This is the second time we've learned a lesson this year about leverage.\"</p>\n<p>In January, another hedge fund, Melvin Capital Management, nearly collapsed after its massive bets against GameStop (GME) were blown up by an army of traders on Reddit. Investors were surprised to learn about the sheer size of the short positions anticipating the video game retailer's stock price would fall.</p>\n<p>When GameStop shares instead went to the moon, Melvin Capital suffered staggering losses and was forced to reach a $2.8 billion bailout with larger rivals.</p>\n<p>\"We saw it on the short side when GameStop blew up. Now we are seeing it on the long side,\" Hogan said.</p>\n<p><b>Opaque financial instruments</b></p>\n<p>Archegos Capital was using borrowed money — apparently a ton of it — to make outsized bets that propped up media stocks. This type excessive leverage is made possible by extremely low interest rates from the Federal Reserve.</p>\n<p>The full scale of these bets wasn't clear until now.</p>\n<p>Perhaps in an effort to avoid making public disclosure filings, Archegos reportedly used derivatives known as total return swaps to mask some of its large investment positions. Investors using these swaps receive the total return of a stock from a dealer and those returns are typically amplified by leverage.</p>\n<p>Archegos could not be reached for comment on Monday.</p>\n<p>Typically, investors who own more than 5% of a stock are required to report that stake with the SEC. These filings do not appear to have been made this time.</p>\n<p>\"Anytime a derivative is involved, you don't really know how deep the tentacles go,\" said Joe Saluzzi, co-head of trading at Themis Trading.</p>\n<p><b>The share sale that broke the camel's back</b></p>\n<p>This complex strategy backfired last week.</p>\n<p>Seeking to capitalize on its skyrocketing stock price, ViacomCBS announced plans for a $3 billion share sale. Up until that point, ViacomCBS shares had nearly tripled on the year. But the share sale appeared to be too much for the market to handle and the media boom morphed into a rout.</p>\n<p>Archegos faced margin calls from its Wall Street lenders. A margin call by a broker requires a client to add funds to its account if the value of an asset drops below a specified level. If the client can't pay up — and in this case Archegos apparently couldn't — the broker can step in and dump the shares on the client's behalf.</p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs, one of Archegos' lenders, seized collateral and sold shares on Friday, a person familiar with the matter told CNN Business. This so-called forced liquidation set off a bloodbath Friday that drove down shares of ViacomCBS and Discovery more than 25% apiece.</p>\n<p>Credit Suisse said that the default by a \"significant US-based hedge fund\" would cause a major hit to its earnings. A person familiar with the matter told CNN Business that Archegos was the firm causing the losses for Credit Suisse.</p>\n<p>Nomura said its losses could be as much as $2 billion from \"transactions with a US client.\"</p>\n<p><b>Founder of hedge fund involved in insider trading scandal</b></p>\n<p>The episode demonstrates the intricate web linking firms across Wall Street — and the risks to the banks providing large amounts of leverage.</p>\n<p>\"Systemic risk from secret and interconnected leverage, trading and derivatives in astronomical undisclosed amounts continue to permeate the shadow banking system,\" Better Markets CEO Dennis Kelleher said in a statement.</p>\n<p>Hogan said investors must remember the inherent risks involved in the business lines of banks.</p>\n<p>\"They watch the creditworthiness of clients, but it's now always perfect,\" he said.</p>\n<p>The creditworthiness of Archegos is a central question here. The epic firesale wiped out more than half of Viacom's value last week alone.\nMajor banks face billions of dollars in losses from their exposure to Archegos. Both Credit Suisse (CS) and Nomura tumbled Monday after warning of significant hits to their earnings.\nThe most startling part about the tale of Archegos is that it is a firm that few people had ever heard of before this weekend. And yet in this era of easy money, Archegos was able to borrow so much that its failure created shockwaves large enough to ripple across Wall Street — and impact everyday Americans' retirement accounts.\n\"It's a wake-up call. With leverage, comes risk,\" said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities Corporation. \"This is the second time we've learned a lesson this year about leverage.\"\nIn January, another hedge fund, Melvin Capital Management, nearly collapsed after its massive bets against GameStop (GME) were blown up by an army of traders on Reddit. Investors were surprised to learn about the sheer size of the short positions anticipating the video game retailer's stock price would fall.\nWhen GameStop shares instead went to the moon, Melvin Capital suffered staggering losses and was forced to reach a $2.8 billion bailout with larger rivals.\n\"We saw it on the short side when GameStop blew up. Now we are seeing it on the long side,\" Hogan said.\nOpaque financial instruments\nArchegos Capital was using borrowed money — apparently a ton of it — to make outsized bets that propped up media stocks. This type excessive leverage is made possible by extremely low interest rates from the Federal Reserve.\nThe full scale of these bets wasn't clear until now.\nPerhaps in an effort to avoid making public disclosure filings, Archegos reportedly used derivatives known as total return swaps to mask some of its large investment positions. Investors using these swaps receive the total return of a stock from a dealer and those returns are typically amplified by leverage.\nArchegos could not be reached for comment on Monday.\nTypically, investors who own more than 5% of a stock are required to report that stake with the SEC. These filings do not appear to have been made this time.\n\"Anytime a derivative is involved, you don't really know how deep the tentacles go,\" said Joe Saluzzi, co-head of trading at Themis Trading.\nThe share sale that broke the camel's back\nThis complex strategy backfired last week.\nSeeking to capitalize on its skyrocketing stock price, ViacomCBS announced plans for a $3 billion share sale. Up until that point, ViacomCBS shares had nearly tripled on the year. But the share sale appeared to be too much for the market to handle and the media boom morphed into a rout.\nArchegos faced margin calls from its Wall Street lenders. A margin call by a broker requires a client to add funds to its account if the value of an asset drops below a specified level. If the client can't pay up — and in this case Archegos apparently couldn't — the broker can step in and dump the shares on the client's behalf.\nGoldman Sachs, one of Archegos' lenders, seized collateral and sold shares on Friday, a person familiar with the matter told CNN Business. This so-called forced liquidation set off a bloodbath Friday that drove down shares of ViacomCBS and Discovery more than 25% apiece.\nCredit Suisse said that the default by a \"significant US-based hedge fund\" would cause a major hit to its earnings. As recently as April 29, this average exposure level stood at plus 83.6%.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d550f647619d600d419397967f7bb778\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"928\"></p>\n<p>That reflects a remarkably quick rush for the exits — 94.3 percentage points in just 10 trading sessions. In fact, out of the 5,000+ trading days since 2000, there have been only 18 — 0.3% — in which the HNNSI’s decline over the trailing 10 days was greater.</p>\n<p>To appreciate the contrarian significance of this, consider that, on average following those past few occasions when the HNNSI declined by this much and this fast, the Nasdaq Composite was 5.3% higher in one month’s time.</p>\n<p>Why, then, haven’t the contrarians become more bullish? The answer is also evident in the chart: The HNNSI’s plunge over the past 10 days stopped well short of the excessive bearish zone, defined as being in the bottom 10% of the historical distribution. That zone is represented by the beige-shaded box at the bottom of the chart.</p>\n<p>The last time the HNNSI fell into that zone was in March 2020. That was when the market’s “wall of worry” became incredibly strong and was able to support an impressive rally. That wall today is not as strong.</p>\n<p>The sentiment picture that the recent data are painting shows the market timers to be trigger-happy. They are quick to jump on the bullish bandwagon when the market rallies, and then jump on the bearish bandwagon when the market declines. As a result, both rallies and declines tend to be short-lived.</p>\n<p>A longer-lasting rally will require more extreme bearishness among the market timers, and for them to stubbornly hold onto their bearishness in the wake of the rally’s initial liftoff. Except for that to happen, the market to itself most likely would have to suffer a worse decline than we’ve experienced in recent days. They are quick to jump on the bullish bandwagon when the market rallies, and then jump on the bearish bandwagon when the market declines.
