The very highest yielders can be value traps, and vulnerable to cuts in their payouts.</p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 High Dividend Index, screened via an approach espoused by Savita Subramanian, head of U.S. equity strategy at BofA Securities, offers a way to get high payouts with more modest risk. The index, composed of 80 high-yielding dividend stocks culled from the S&amp;P 500, has easily outperformed the S&amp;P 500 so far this year,with a total return of 23% through Monday, compared with 18% for the broader benchmark.</p>\n<p>Subramanian suggested that instead of buying the more vulnerable stocks in the top quintile of the S&amp;P 500 in terms of yield, investors should look at the second quintile.<i>Barron’s</i>applied the same approach to the S&amp;P 500 High Dividend Index.</p>\n<p>We divided the index into quintiles, each with 16 stocks. The first contained the highest yielders, so we looked at the six highest yielders in the second quintile, based on FactSet data. All six of these companies have avoided dividend suspensions due to the pandemic, though one had to cut its payout. All but one have put through dividend increases this year.</p>\n<p>One is&nbsp;Simon Property Group(ticker: SPG), a real-estate investment trust that specializes in regional shopping malls. The stock yields an attractive 4.6%, having returned about 50% this year through Aug. 2, dividends included.</p>\n<p>The company recently declared a quarterly dividend of $1.50 a share, up 10 cents, or 7%, from $1.40 in the second quarter.</p>\n<p>During the pandemic last year, the company slashed its quarterly payout to $1.30 a share from $2.10. The company is a relatively new member of the S&amp;P 500 Dividend Aristocrat Index, a grouping of businesses that have paid out a higher dividend for at least 25 straight years.</p>\n<p>IBM in April declared a dividend increase of a penny, or less than 1%, to $1.64 a share.</p>\n<p>LyondellBasell Industries recently declared a quarterly disbursement of $1.13 a share, a nearly 8% boost from $1.05.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, insurer and money manager Prudential Financial (PRU) was recently yielding 4.5%. The company in February declared a quarterly dividend of $1.15 a share, versus $1.10 previously, for a nearly 5% increase. In an interview with<i>Barron’s</i>earlier this year, CEO&nbsp;Charlie Lowrey&nbsp;described the company’s dividend as “something you don’t mess with.”</p>\n<p>Chemical company Dow (DOW), which also was yielding 4.5% recently, has maintained its quarterly dividend at 70 cents a share. The very highest yielders can be value traps, and vulnerable to cuts in their payouts.\nThe S&P 500 High Dividend Index, screened via an approach espoused by Savita Subramanian, head of U.S. equity strategy at BofA Securities, offers a way to get high payouts with more modest risk. The index, composed of 80 high-yielding dividend stocks culled from the S&P 500, has easily outperformed the S&P 500 so far this year,with a total return of 23% through Monday, compared with 18% for the broader benchmark.\nSubramanian suggested that instead of buying the more vulnerable stocks in the top quintile of the S&P 500 in terms of yield, investors should look at the second quintile.Barron’sapplied the same approach to the S&P 500 High Dividend Index.\nWe divided the index into quintiles, each with 16 stocks. The first contained the highest yielders, so we looked at the six highest yielders in the second quintile, based on FactSet data. All six of these companies have avoided dividend suspensions due to the pandemic, though one had to cut its payout. All but one have put through dividend increases this year.\nOne is Simon Property Group(ticker: SPG), a real-estate investment trust that specializes in regional shopping malls. The stock yields an attractive 4.6%, having returned about 50% this year through Aug. 2, dividends included.\nThe company recently declared a quarterly dividend of $1.50 a share, up 10 cents, or 7%, from $1.40 in the second quarter.\nDuring the pandemic last year, the company slashed its quarterly payout to $1.30 a share from $2.10. With the company's previous two quarterly earnings reports smashing street estimates, it's not really a surprise that expectations have continued to rise. With shares rallying in recent weeks to new all-time highs, another strong report will likely be needed to keep things going.</p>\n<p>For the first half of fiscal 2021, Apple's revenues have beaten street estimates by an average of $10.25 billion per quarter. The fiscal Q3&nbsp;current average estimate&nbsp;is $73.44 billion, which would represent growth of more than 23% from the year-ago period. It's quite impressive that the current average is up more than $13 billion over the past year. On the bottom line, the street is looking for $1.01, growth of more than 56%. In the table below, you can see some Q3 key financial items for the past two years, with the current estimates for this year's period in yellow. Dollar values are millions except per share amounts.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/df8630a7ef0be70113aeac0d50265a57\" tg-width=\"476\" tg-height=\"361\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>(*Numbers estimated based on last year's split. Actual numbers to come from the company. Source: Fiscal Q3 2020 report)</span></p>\n<p>Apple is comingoff arguably&nbsp;its best quarter ever. Revenues for the iPhone were up more than 65.5% over the prior-year period, with the Mac up more than 70% and iPad up nearly 79%. Fiscal Q2 overall revenue growth was nearly 54%, so this time around we're looking for about 40% of that figure. Don't forget, on the&nbsp;Q2 conference call, management talked about a $3 billion to $4 billion revenue hit in the June period from supply constraints.</p>\n<p>I'm most curious to see how the iPhone does this time around, as it appears that the 5G supercycle seems to be going pretty well. This year, however, most expectations are that the smartphone will return to its usual September launch period, meaning new phone revenues would be generated in fiscal Q4 again. Last year's coronavirus delayed launch meant sales didn't start until well into October and even November for some models, completely changing the sales trajectory for Apple's current fiscal year. This year's launch isn't expected to see a major upgrade to the phone line itself, so demand trends will probably be more dependent on how many consumers are upgrading to 5G rather than switching to iPhones.</p>\n<p>I'm sure analysts will also be looking to see how Apple has navigated the chip shortage as well as soaring commodity prices. I don't think we will see a repeat of the 575 basis point increase in product gross margins that Q2 saw this time around, but the iPhone 12 line should still provide a nice year-over-year boost. In the long run, investors will look at growing services margins helping the gross margin percentage overall, but don't forget that the services side of the business has a lot of its expenses on the operating line.</p>\n<p>For the stock to stay elevated, management is going to need to show that work from home and stimulus money tailwinds are still ongoing. As I discussed in&nbsp;a previous article, estimates call for Apple to see quarterly revenues decline for its March 2022 fiscal period, as the company laps very high previous year bars. While that might bring out some of the bears again, the long-term trajectory still seems positive. Current estimates call for $355 billion in total revenue during this fiscal year with Apple adding another $50 billion to that total over the next three years.</p>\n<p>I hope that management took advantage of the weakness in Apple shares during the quarter for its buyback. Even though the company is spending $20 billion or so every three months, that money doesn't go as far as $145 as it does at $125, obviously. Less shares repurchased means less of an earnings per share benefit, and lower long-term dividend raises. The good news is that Apple is on its way towards $100 billion a year in free cash flow, so investors don't need to worry about capital returns slowing down anytime soon.</p>\n<p>The major issue for Apple right now is valuation. Shares finished last week trading at 33.4 times their trailing twelve-month earnings. That's basically double the mid-teens numbers from a couple of years ago, helped a lot by easy-money policies around the globe. My current price target of $162 is based on a 30X multiple of $5.40 in EPS for the September 2022 period. That number, however, assumes that the Fed and other central banks will remain fairly accommodative through most of next year. If we start to get a lot of tapering and or rate hikes earlier than expected, the overall market is likely to feel some pain, and I don't see how Apple would be immune from that.</p>\n<p>A strong report from Apple could easily help shares to rise to a new all-time high. But just to play devil's advocate for a minute, what if there is a disappointment or a \"buy the rumor, sell the news\" reaction? Well, shares are quite a bit above their key moving averages as seen in the chart below (50-day in purple, 200-day in orange). As long as Apple can hold the shorter-term trend line, that rising technical level should be one of support. With the company's previous two quarterly earnings reports smashing street estimates, it's not really a surprise that expectations have continued to rise. With shares rallying in recent weeks to new all-time highs, another strong report will likely be needed to keep things going.\nFor the first half of fiscal 2021, Apple's revenues have beaten street estimates by an average of $10.25 billion per quarter. The fiscal Q3 current average estimate is $73.44 billion, which would represent growth of more than 23% from the year-ago period. It's quite impressive that the current average is up more than $13 billion over the past year. On the bottom line, the street is looking for $1.01, growth of more than 56%. In the table below, you can see some Q3 key financial items for the past two years, with the current estimates for this year's period in yellow. Revenues for the iPhone were up more than 65.5% over the prior-year period, with the Mac up more than 70% and iPad up nearly 79%. Fiscal Q2 overall revenue growth was nearly 54%, so this time around we're looking for about 40% of that figure. Don't forget, on the Q2 conference call, management talked about a $3 billion to $4 billion revenue hit in the June period from supply constraints.\nI'm most curious to see how the iPhone does this time around, as it appears that the 5G supercycle seems to be going pretty well. This year, however, most expectations are that the smartphone will return to its usual September launch period, meaning new phone revenues would be generated in fiscal Q4 again. Last year's coronavirus delayed launch meant sales didn't start until well into October and even November for some models, completely changing the sales trajectory for Apple's current fiscal year. This year's launch isn't expected to see a major upgrade to the phone line itself, so demand trends will probably be more dependent on how many consumers are upgrading to 5G rather than switching to iPhones.\nI'm sure analysts will also be looking to see how Apple has navigated the chip shortage as well as soaring commodity prices. I don't think we will see a repeat of the 575 basis point increase in product gross margins that Q2 saw this time around, but the iPhone 12 line should still provide a nice year-over-year boost. In the long run, investors will look at growing services margins helping the gross margin percentage overall, but don't forget that the services side of the business has a lot of its expenses on the operating line.\nFor the stock to stay elevated, management is going to need to show that work from home and stimulus money tailwinds are still ongoing. Profit stagnation has meant stock stagnation, too.</p>\n<p>The good news for Tesla bulls is Wall Street is projecting a fresh record: Operating profit is expected to be $835 million for the second quarter, driven by strong deliveries. The 2021 second quarter marked the first time Tesla delivered&nbsp;more than 200,000&nbsp;vehicles in a single quarter.</p>\n<p>After earnings are digested, there should be endless arguments among bulls and bears about the quality of earnings. For instance, one way Tesla generates sales is by selling regulatory credits—which it earns by producing more than its fair share of electric vehicles. The company generated $518 million in first-quarter credit sales, which helped Tesla&nbsp;beat earnings&nbsp;estimates. There is always debate about what is the “normal” amount of credit sales and when will those sales dry up. Eventually, both the bulls and bears expect other auto makers to sell their own EVs, cutting off that source of revenue for Tesla.</p>\n<p>There is also the issue&nbsp;of Bitcoin. Tesla recognized a small gain on its Bitcoin holdings in the first quarter, but the cryptocurrency’s prices have fallen by roughly half since their April peak. That means there is a chance of a small loss. How investors react is anyone’s guess, but don’t expect Tesla to sell out of its Bitcoin position. In fact, Google search volume is now back down to where it was before the pandemic started in early 2020.</p>\n<p>In addition, search volumes are now down 75% from their peak levels during the initial short squeezes in AMC and GameStop back in January 2021.</p>\n<p>Colas said meme stocks like AMC need new retail stock traders to join in the buying to support their stock prices else they could be headed for more volatility like they have experienced this week.</p>\n<p>“Bubbles need fresh money, or they deflate. Quickly,” Colas wrote. “Every craze needs new adherents (i.e., not just the same crowd) to keep it relevant, and the Google chart shows those are in increasingly short supply.”</p>\n<p><b>PMP Weighs In:</b>Benzinga&nbsp;PreMarket Prep co-host Dennis Dick said&nbsp;a good story can carry a stock a long way, and some stocks can even become so hot that they become temporarily disconnected from the company’s underlying fundamentals.</p>\n<p>“We have seen that in a number of meme stocks this year. Story can drive price in the short run but stocks almost always return back to their fundamental value in the long run,” Dick said.</p>\n<p>The type of disconnect between share price and underlying value that AMC and GameStop have experienced in 2021 is certainly nothing new. Canadian cannabis stock&nbsp;<b>Tilray Inc</b>(NASDAQ:TLRY) experienced a similar disconnect back in 2018 when a retail stock mania sent the stock skyrocketing up to $300. Today, Tilray is trading back down at around $13.90.</p>\n<p>“As the stock price begins to fall, momentum traders who have been chasing the hot story will begin to exit. But if the stock trades at an extreme valuation, there may be very few traders willing to buy. This is what we are starting to see in many meme stocks today,” Dick said.</p>\n<p><b>Benzinga's Take:</b>If the story begins to get hot again, the stock prices of overvalued story stocks can always recover once again. In fact, Google search volume is now back down to where it was before the pandemic started in early 2020.\nIn addition, search volumes are now down 75% from their peak levels during the initial short squeezes in AMC and GameStop back in January 2021.\nColas said meme stocks like AMC need new retail stock traders to join in the buying to support their stock prices else they could be headed for more volatility like they have experienced this week.\n“Bubbles need fresh money, or they deflate. Quickly,” Colas wrote. “Every craze needs new adherents (i.e., not just the same crowd) to keep it relevant, and the Google chart shows those are in increasingly short supply.”\nPMP Weighs In:Benzinga PreMarket Prep co-host Dennis Dick said a good story can carry a stock a long way, and some stocks can even become so hot that they become temporarily disconnected from the company’s underlying fundamentals.\n“We have seen that in a number of meme stocks this year. Story can drive price in the short run but stocks almost always return back to their fundamental value in the long run,” Dick said.\nThe type of disconnect between share price and underlying value that AMC and GameStop have experienced in 2021 is certainly nothing new. Canadian cannabis stock Tilray Inc(NASDAQ:TLRY) experienced a similar disconnect back in 2018 when a retail stock mania sent the stock skyrocketing up to $300. Today, Tilray is trading back down at around $13.90.\n“As the stock price begins to fall, momentum traders who have been chasing the hot story will begin to exit. But if the stock trades at an extreme valuation, there may be very few traders willing to buy. Would it be hours, days, or weeks?</p>\n<p>It has now been half a year, and the core “meme stocks” are still trading at levels considered outrageous by people who have studied them for years. New names like&nbsp;Clover Health Investments(CLOV) and&nbsp;Newegg Commerce(NEGG) have recently popped up on message boards, and their stocks have popped, too.</p>\n<p>The collective efforts of millions of retail traders—long derided as “the dumb money”—have successfully held stocks aloft and forced naysayers to capitulate.</p>\n<p>That is true even as the companies they are betting on have shown scant signs of transforming their businesses, or turning profits that might justify their valuations. BlackBerry burned cash in its latest quarter and warned that its key cybersecurity division would hit the low end of its revenue guidance; the stock dipped on the news but has still more than doubled in the past year.</p>\n<p>While trading volume at the big brokers has come down slightly from its February peak, it remains two to three times as high as it was before the pandemic. And a startling amount of that activity is occurring in stocks favored by retail traders. The average daily value of shares traded in&nbsp;AMC Entertainment Holdings(AMC), for example, reached $13.1 billion in June, more than&nbsp;Apple’s(AAPL) $9.5 billion and Amazon.com’s (AMZN) $10.3 billion.</p>\n<p>Even as the coronavirus fades in the U.S., most new traders say they are committed to the hobby they learned during lockdown—58% of day traders in a Betterment survey said they are planning to trade even more in the future, and only 12% plan to trade less. Amateur pandemic bakers have stopped kneading sourdough loaves; traders are only getting hungrier.</p>\n<p>A sustained bear market would spoil such an appetite, as it did when the dot-com bubble burst. For now, dips are reasons to hold or buy.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/25a79e71371c165f9a3a5085931fc487\" tg-width=\"979\" tg-height=\"649\"></p>\n<p>“I’ve seen that the ‘buy the dip’ sentiment hasn’t relented for a moment,” wrote Brandon Luczek, an electronics technician for the U.S. Navy who trades with friends online, in an email to&nbsp;Barron’s.</p>\n<p>The meme stock surge has been propelled by a rise in trading by retail investors. In 2020, online brokers signed clients at a record pace, with more than 10 million people opening new accounts. That record will almost certainly be broken in 2021. Brokers had already added more than 10 million accounts less than halfway into the year, some of the top firms have disclosed.</p>\n<p>Meme stocks are both the cart and the horse of this phenomenon. Their sudden price spikes are driven by new investors, and then that action drives even more new people to invest. Millions of people downloaded investing apps in late January and early February just to be a part of the fun. A recent&nbsp;Charles Schwab(SCHW) survey found that 15% of all current traders began investing after 2020.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/167386c6881a258922ad62caaf7a05f4\" tg-width=\"971\" tg-height=\"644\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8e29e3041b91070252ab9063d1a11fa2\" tg-width=\"975\" tg-height=\"642\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f9cc1c0bd6368721c0eca87e25719f16\" tg-width=\"964\" tg-height=\"641\"></p>\n<p>The most prominent player in the surge is Robinhood, which said it had added 5.5 million funded accounts in the first quarter alone. But it isn’t alone. Fidelity, for instance, announced that it had attracted 1.6 million new customers under the age of 35 in the first quarter, 223% more than a year before.</p>\n<p>Under pressure from Robinhood’s zero-commission model, all of the major brokers cut commissions to zero in 2019. That opened the floodgates to a new group of customers—one that may not have as much spare cash to trade but is more active and diverse than its predecessors. And the brokers are cashing in. Fidelity is hoping to attract investors before they even have driver’s licenses, allowing children as young as 13 to open trading accounts. Robinhood is riding the momentum to an initial public offering that analysts expect to value it at more than 10 times its revenue.</p>\n<p>These new customers act differently than their older peers. For years, there was a “big gravitation toward ETFs,” says Chris Larkin, head of trading at E*Trade, which is now owned by Morgan Stanley (MS). But picking single stocks is clearly “the big story of 2021.”</p>\n<p>To be sure, equity exchange-traded funds are still doing well, as investors around the world bet on the pandemic recovery and avoid weak bond yields.</p>\n<p>But ETFs don’t light up the message boards like stocks do. Not that it has been a one-way ride for the top names. GameStop did dip in February, and Wall Street enjoyed a moment of schadenfreude. It didn’t last.</p>\n<p>“Like cicadas, meme traders returned in a wild blaze of activity after being seemingly underground for several months,” wrote Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. Sosnick believes that the meme stocks tend to trade inversely to cryptocurrencies, because their fans rotate from one to the other as the momentum shifts.</p>\n<p>“I don’t think it’s strictly a coincidence that meme stocks roared back to life after a significant correction in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies,” he wrote.</p>\n<p>Sosnick considers meme stocks a “sector unto themselves,” one that he segregates on his computer monitor away from other stock tickers.</p>\n<p>Indeed, Wall Street’s reaction to the meme stock revolution has been to isolate the parts of the market that the pros deem irrational. Most short sellers won’t touch the stocks, and analysts are dropping coverage.</p>\n<p>But Wall Street can’t swat the retail army away like cicadas, or count on them disappearing for the next 17 years. Stock trading has permanently shifted. This year, retail activity accounts for 24% of equity volume, up from 15% in 2019. Adherents to the new creed are not passive observers willing to let Wall Street manage the markets.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/710e642d3b685b74f8c9dcaf46ef3e0b\" tg-width=\"968\" tg-height=\"643\"></p>\n<p>“What this really reflects is a reversal of the trends that we saw toward less and less engagement with individual companies,” says Joshua Mitts, a professor at Columbia Law School specializing in securities markets. “Technology is bringing the average investor closer to the companies in which he or she invests, and that’s just taking on new and unpredictable forms.”</p>\n<p>The swings you get can definitely make you feel some sort of way.</p>\n<p>— Matt Kohrs, 26, who streams stock analysis daily on YouTube</p>\n<p>It is now changing the lives of those who got in early and are still riding the names higher.</p>\n<p>Take Matt Kohrs, who had invested in AMC Entertainment early. He quit his job as a programmer in New York in February, moved to Philadelphia, and started streaming&nbsp;stock analysis on YouTube&nbsp;for seven hours a day.</p>\n<p>With 350,000 YouTube followers, it’s paying the bills. With his earnings from ads and from the stock, Kohrs says he can pull down roughly the same salary he made before. But he also knows that relying on earnings from stocks like this is nothing like a 9-to-5 job.</p>\n<p>“The swings you get can definitely make you feel some sort of way,” he says.</p>\n<p>Companies are starting to react more aggressively, too. They are either embracing their new owners or paying meme-ologists to understand the emoji-filled language of the new Wall Street so they can ward them off or appease them.</p>\n<p>AMC even canceled a proposed equity raise this past week because the company apparently didn’t like the vibes it was getting from the Reddit crowd. AMC has already quintupled its share count over the past year. CEO Adam Aron tweeted that he had seen “many yes, many no” reactions to his proposal to issue 25 million more shares, so it will be canceled instead of being presented for a vote at AMC’s annual meeting later this month. The company did not respond to a question on how it had polled shareholders.</p>\n<p>Forget the boardroom. Corporate policy is now being determined in the chat room.</p>\n<p>Big investors are spending more time tracking social-media discussions about stocks. Bank of America found in a survey this year that about 25% of institutions had already been tracking social-media sentiment, but that about 40% are interested in using it going forward.</p>\n<p>In the past few months, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and J.P. Morgan have all produced reports on how to trade around the retail action, coming to somewhat different conclusions.</p>\n<p>There can be “alpha in the signal,” as Morgan Stanley put it, but it can take some intense number-crunching to get there. Not all message-board chatter leads to sustained price gains, of course, and retail order flow cannot easily be separated from institutional flow without substantial data analysis. For investors with the tools to pinpoint which stocks retail investors are buying and which they are selling, J.P. Morgan suggests going long on the 20% of stocks with the most buying interest and short on the top 20% in selling interest.</p>\n<p>For now, many of the institutions buying data on social-media sentiment appear to be trying to reduce their risks, as opposed to scouting new opportunities, according to Boris Spiwak of alternative data firm Thinknum, which offers products that track social-media sentiment. “They see it as almost like an insurance policy, to limit their downside risks,” he says.</p>\n<p>For retail traders, the method isn’t always scientific. The action is sustained by a community ethos. And the force behind it is as much emotional and moral as financial.</p>\n<p>New investors say they are motivated by a desire to prove themselves and punish the old guard as much as by profits. They learn from one another about the market, sometimes amplifying or debunking conspiracy theories about Wall Street. Some link the meme-stock movement to continued mistrust of big financial institutions stemming from the 2008 financial crisis.</p>\n<p>“Wall Street brought our economy to its knees, and no one ever got in trouble for it,” says the 26-year-old Kohrs. “So, I think they view this as not only can we make money, but we can also make these hedge funds on Wall Street pay.”</p>\n<p>Claire Hirschberg is a 28-year-old union organizer who bought about $50 worth of GameStop stock on Robinhood in January after hearing about it from friends. She liked the idea, but what really got her excited about it was the reaction of her father, a longtime money manager. “He was so mad I had bought GameStop and was refusing to sell,” she says, laughing. “And that just makes me want to hold it forever.”</p>\n<p>Just like old Wall Street has rituals and codes, the new one does, too. A new investment banking employee learns quickly that you don’t wear a Ferragamo tie until after you make associate. You never leave the office until the managing director does, and you don’t complain about the hours. And the bad guys are the regulators and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and not in that order.</p>\n<p>The new trading desk—the apps that millions of retail traders now use and the message boards where they congregate—have unspoken rules, too. Publicly acknowledging financial losses is a valiant act, evidence of internal fortitude and belief in the group. You don’t take yourself seriously and you don’t police language. You are part of an army of “apes” or “retards.” You hold through the crashes, even if it means you might lose everything. And the bad guys are the short sellers, the market makers, and the Wall Street elites, in that order.</p>\n<p>The group action is not just for moral support. The trading strategy depends on people keeping up the buying pressure to force a short squeeze or to buy bullish options that trigger what’s known as a gamma squeeze.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/75d79c78a14cc8f297e17397cc54bdb5\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"840\"><span>Keith Gill became the face of the Reddit army of retail traders pushing shares of GameStop higher when he appeared virtually before a House Financial Services Committee hearing in February.</span></p>\n<p>Many short sellers say they won’t touch these stocks anymore. But clearly, others aren’t taking that advice and are giving the meme movement oxygen by repeatedly betting against the stocks. AMC’s short interest was at 17% of the stock’s float in mid-June, down from 28% in January, but not by much.</p>\n<p>As the price rises, the shorts can’t help themselves. They start “drooling, with flames coming out of their ears,” says Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities analyst who has covered GameStop for years. “What’s kind of shocked me is the definition of insanity, which is doing the same thing over and over and over again and hoping for a different outcome each time, and the shorts keep coming back,” he says. “And [GameStop bull] Keith Gill and his Reddit raiders keep squeezing them, and it keeps working.”</p>\n<p>To beat the short sellers, the Reddit crowd needs to hold together, but the community has been showing cracks at times. The two meme stocks with the most determined fan bases—GameStop and AMC—still have enormous armies of core believers who do not seem easily swayed. But other names seem to have more-fickle backers. Several stocks caught up in the meme madness have come crashing down to earth.Bed Bath &amp; Beyond(BBBY) spiked twice—in late January and early June—but now trades only slightly above its mid-January levels. People who bought during the upswings have lost money.</p>\n<p>Distrust has spread, and some traders worry that wallstreetbets— the original Reddit message board that inspired the GameStop frenzy—has grown so fast that it has lost its original spirit, and potentially grown vulnerable to manipulation. Some have moved to other message boards, like r/superstonk, in hopes of reclaiming the old community’s flavor.</p>\n<p>Travis Rehl, the founder of social-media tracking company Hype Equity, says that he tries to separate possible manipulators from more organic investor sentiment. Hype Equity is usually hired by public-relations firms representing companies that are being talked about online, he says. Now, he sees a growing trend of stocks that suddenly come up on message boards, receive positive chatter, and then disappear.</p>\n<p>“It’s called into question what is a true discussion versus what is something that somebody just wants to pump,” he says. The moderators of wallstreetbets forbid market manipulation on the platform, and Rehl say they appear to work hard to police misinformation. The moderators did not respond to a request from&nbsp;Barron’s&nbsp;for comment.</p>\n<p>“If you can create enough buzz to get a stock that goes up 10%, 20%, even 50% in a short period of time, there’s a tremendous incentive to do that,” Sosnick says.</p>\n<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission is watching for funny business on the message boards. SEC Chairman Gary Gensler and some members of Congress have discussed changing market rules with the intention of adding transparency protecting retail traders—although changes could also anger the retail crowd if they slow down trading or make it more expensive.</p>\n<p>Regulations aren’t the only thing that could deflate this trend. Dan Egan, vice president of behavioral finance and investing at fintech Betterment, thinks the momentum may run out of steam in September. Even “apes” have responsibilities. “Kids start going back to schools; parents are free to go to work again,” he says. “That’s the next time there’s going to be some oxygen pulled out of the room.”</p>\n<p>Traditional investors may be tempted to write off the entire phenomenon as temporary madness inspired by lockdowns and free government money. But that would be a mistake. If zero-commission brokerages and fun with GameStop broke down barriers for millions of new investors to open accounts, it’s almost certainly a good thing, as long as most people bet with money they don’t need immediately. Would it be hours, days, or weeks?\nIt has now been half a year, and the core “meme stocks” are still trading at levels considered outrageous by people who have studied them for years. New names like Clover Health Investments(CLOV) and Newegg Commerce(NEGG) have recently popped up on message boards, and their stocks have popped, too.\nThe collective efforts of millions of retail traders—long derided as “the dumb money”—have successfully held stocks aloft and forced naysayers to capitulate.\nThat is true even as the companies they are betting on have shown scant signs of transforming their businesses, or turning profits that might justify their valuations. BlackBerry burned cash in its latest quarter and warned that its key cybersecurity division would hit the low end of its revenue guidance; the stock dipped on the news but has still more than doubled in the past year.\nWhile trading volume at the big brokers has come down slightly from its February peak, it remains two to three times as high as it was before the pandemic. And a startling amount of that activity is occurring in stocks favored by retail traders. The average daily value of shares traded in AMC Entertainment Holdings(AMC), for example, reached $13.1 billion in June, more than Apple’s(AAPL) $9.5 billion and Amazon.com’s (AMZN) $10.3 billion.\nEven as the coronavirus fades in the U.S., most new traders say they are committed to the hobby they learned during lockdown—58% of day traders in a Betterment survey said they are planning to trade even more in the future, and only 12% plan to trade less. Amateur pandemic bakers have stopped kneading sourdough loaves; traders are only getting hungrier.\nA sustained bear market would spoil such an appetite, as it did when the dot-com bubble burst. For now, dips are reasons to hold or buy.\n\n“I’ve seen that the ‘buy the dip’ sentiment hasn’t relented for a moment,” wrote Brandon Luczek, an electronics technician for the U.S. Navy who trades with friends online, in an email to Barron’s.\nThe meme stock surge has been propelled by a rise in trading by retail investors. In 2020, online brokers signed clients at a record pace, with more than 10 million people opening new accounts. That record will almost certainly be broken in 2021. Brokers had already added more than 10 million accounts less than halfway into the year, some of the top firms have disclosed.\nMeme stocks are both the cart and the horse of this phenomenon. Their sudden price spikes are driven by new investors, and then that action drives even more new people to invest. Millions of people downloaded investing apps in late January and early February just to be a part of the fun. A recent Charles Schwab(SCHW) survey found that 15% of all current traders began investing after 2020.\n\nThe most prominent player in the surge is Robinhood, which said it had added 5.5 million funded accounts in the first quarter alone. But it isn’t alone. Fidelity, for instance, announced that it had attracted 1.6 million new customers under the age of 35 in the first quarter, 223% more than a year before.\nUnder pressure from Robinhood’s zero-commission model, all of the major brokers cut commissions to zero in 2019. That opened the floodgates to a new group of customers—one that may not have as much spare cash to trade but is more active and diverse than its predecessors. And the brokers are cashing in. Fidelity is hoping to attract investors before they even have driver’s licenses, allowing children as young as 13 to open trading accounts. Robinhood is riding the momentum to an initial public offering that analysts expect to value it at more than 10 times its revenue.\nThese new customers act differently than their older peers. For years, there was a “big gravitation toward ETFs,” says Chris Larkin, head of trading at E*Trade, which is now owned by Morgan Stanley (MS). But picking single stocks is clearly “the big story of 2021.”\nTo be sure, equity exchange-traded funds are still doing well, as investors around the world bet on the pandemic recovery and avoid weak bond yields.\nBut ETFs don’t light up the message boards like stocks do. Not that it has been a one-way ride for the top names. GameStop did dip in February, and Wall Street enjoyed a moment of schadenfreude. It didn’t last.\n“Like cicadas, meme traders returned in a wild blaze of activity after being seemingly underground for several months,” wrote Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. Sosnick believes that the meme stocks tend to trade inversely to cryptocurrencies, because their fans rotate from one to the other as the momentum shifts.\n“I don’t think it’s strictly a coincidence that meme stocks roared back to life after a significant correction in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies,” he wrote.\nSosnick considers meme stocks a “sector unto themselves,” one that he segregates on his computer monitor away from other stock tickers.\nIndeed, Wall Street’s reaction to the meme stock revolution has been to isolate the parts of the market that the pros deem irrational. Most short sellers won’t touch the stocks, and analysts are dropping coverage.\nBut Wall Street can’t swat the retail army away like cicadas, or count on them disappearing for the next 17 years. Stock trading has permanently shifted. This year, retail activity accounts for 24% of equity volume, up from 15% in 2019. Adherents to the new creed are not passive observers willing to let Wall Street manage the markets.\n\n“What this really reflects is a reversal of the trends that we saw toward less and less engagement with individual companies,” says Joshua Mitts, a professor at Columbia Law School specializing in securities markets. “Technology is bringing the average investor closer to the companies in which he or she invests, and that’s just taking on new and unpredictable forms.”\nThe swings you get can definitely make you feel some sort of way.\n— Matt Kohrs, 26, who streams stock analysis daily on YouTube\nIt is now changing the lives of those who got in early and are still riding the names higher.\nTake Matt Kohrs, who had invested in AMC Entertainment early. He quit his job as a programmer in New York in February, moved to Philadelphia, and started streaming stock analysis on YouTube for seven hours a day.\nWith 350,000 YouTube followers, it’s paying the bills. With his earnings from ads and from the stock, Kohrs says he can pull down roughly the same salary he made before. But he also knows that relying on earnings from stocks like this is nothing like a 9-to-5 job.\n“The swings you get can definitely make you feel some sort of way,” he says.\nCompanies are starting to react more aggressively, too. They are either embracing their new owners or paying meme-ologists to understand the emoji-filled language of the new Wall Street so they can ward them off or appease them.\nAMC even canceled a proposed equity raise this past week because the company apparently didn’t like the vibes it was getting from the Reddit crowd. AMC has already quintupled its share count over the past year. CEO Adam Aron tweeted that he had seen “many yes, many no” reactions to his proposal to issue 25 million more shares, so it will be canceled instead of being presented for a vote at AMC’s annual meeting later this month. The company did not respond to a question on how it had polled shareholders.\nForget the boardroom. Corporate policy is now being determined in the chat room.\nBig investors are spending more time tracking social-media discussions about stocks. Bank of America found in a survey this year that about 25% of institutions had already been tracking social-media sentiment, but that about 40% are interested in using it going forward.\nIn the past few months, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and J.P. Morgan have all produced reports on how to trade around the retail action, coming to somewhat different conclusions.\nThere can be “alpha in the signal,” as Morgan Stanley put it, but it can take some intense number-crunching to get there. Not all message-board chatter leads to sustained price gains, of course, and retail order flow cannot easily be separated from institutional flow without substantial data analysis. For investors with the tools to pinpoint which stocks retail investors are buying and which they are selling, J.P. Morgan suggests going long on the 20% of stocks with the most buying interest and short on the top 20% in selling interest.\nFor now, many of the institutions buying data on social-media sentiment appear to be trying to reduce their risks, as opposed to scouting new opportunities, according to Boris Spiwak of alternative data firm Thinknum, which offers products that track social-media sentiment. “They see it as almost like an insurance policy, to limit their downside risks,” he says.\nFor retail traders, the method isn’t always scientific. The action is sustained by a community ethos. And the force behind it is as much emotional and moral as financial.\nNew investors say they are motivated by a desire to prove themselves and punish the old guard as much as by profits. They learn from one another about the market, sometimes amplifying or debunking conspiracy theories about Wall Street. Some link the meme-stock movement to continued mistrust of big financial institutions stemming from the 2008 financial crisis.\n“Wall Street brought our economy to its knees, and no one ever got in trouble for it,” says the 26-year-old Kohrs. “So, I think they view this as not only can we make money, but we can also make these hedge funds on Wall Street pay.”\nClaire Hirschberg is a 28-year-old union organizer who bought about $50 worth of GameStop stock on Robinhood in January after hearing about it from friends. She liked the idea, but what really got her excited about it was the reaction of her father, a longtime money manager. “He was so mad I had bought GameStop and was refusing to sell,” she says, laughing. “And that just makes me want to hold it forever.”\nJust like old Wall Street has rituals and codes, the new one does, too. A new investment banking employee learns quickly that you don’t wear a Ferragamo tie until after you make associate. You never leave the office until the managing director does, and you don’t complain about the hours. And the bad guys are the regulators and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and not in that order.\nThe new trading desk—the apps that millions of retail traders now use and the message boards where they congregate—have unspoken rules, too. Publicly acknowledging financial losses is a valiant act, evidence of internal fortitude and belief in the group. You don’t take yourself seriously and you don’t police language. You are part of an army of “apes” or “retards.” You hold through the crashes, even if it means you might lose everything. And the bad guys are the short sellers, the market makers, and the Wall Street elites, in that order.\nThe group action is not just for moral support. The trading strategy depends on people keeping up the buying pressure to force a short squeeze or to buy bullish options that trigger what’s known as a gamma squeeze.\nKeith Gill became the face of the Reddit army of retail traders pushing shares of GameStop higher when he appeared virtually before a House Financial Services Committee hearing in February.\nMany short sellers say they won’t touch these stocks anymore. But clearly, others aren’t taking that advice and are giving the meme movement oxygen by repeatedly betting against the stocks. AMC’s short interest was at 17% of the stock’s float in mid-June, down from 28% in January, but not by much.\nAs the price rises, the shorts can’t help themselves. They start “drooling, with flames coming out of their ears,” says Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities analyst who has covered GameStop for years. “What’s kind of shocked me is the definition of insanity, which is doing the same thing over and over and over again and hoping for a different outcome each time, and the shorts keep coming back,” he says. “And [GameStop bull] Keith Gill and his Reddit raiders keep squeezing them, and it keeps working.”\nTo beat the short sellers, the Reddit crowd needs to hold together, but the community has been showing cracks at times. The two meme stocks with the most determined fan bases—GameStop and AMC—still have enormous armies of core believers who do not seem easily swayed. But other names seem to have more-fickle backers. Several stocks caught up in the meme madness have come crashing down to earth.Bed Bath & Beyond(BBBY) spiked twice—in late January and early June—but now trades only slightly above its mid-January levels. People who bought during the upswings have lost money.\nDistrust has spread, and some traders worry that wallstreetbets— the original Reddit message board that inspired the GameStop frenzy—has grown so fast that it has lost its original spirit, and potentially grown vulnerable to manipulation. Some have moved to other message boards, like r/superstonk, in hopes of reclaiming the old community’s flavor.\nTravis Rehl, the founder of social-media tracking company Hype Equity, says that he tries to separate possible manipulators from more organic investor sentiment. Hype Equity is usually hired by public-relations firms representing companies that are being talked about online, he says. Now, he sees a growing trend of stocks that suddenly come up on message boards, receive positive chatter, and then disappear.\n“It’s called into question what is a true discussion versus what is something that somebody just wants to pump,” he says. The moderators of wallstreetbets forbid market manipulation on the platform, and Rehl say they appear to work hard to police misinformation. The moderators did not respond to a request from Barron’s for comment.\n“If you can create enough buzz to get a stock that goes up 10%, 20%, even 50% in a short period of time, there’s a tremendous incentive to do that,” Sosnick says.\nThe Securities and Exchange Commission is watching for funny business on the message boards. SEC Chairman Gary Gensler and some members of Congress have discussed changing market rules with the intention of adding transparency protecting retail traders—although changes could also anger the retail crowd if they slow down trading or make it more expensive.\nRegulations aren’t the only thing that could deflate this trend. Dan Egan, vice president of behavioral finance and investing at fintech Betterment, thinks the momentum may run out of steam in September. Even “apes” have responsibilities. “Kids start going back to schools; parents are free to go to work again,” he says. “That’s the next time there’s going to be some oxygen pulled out of the room.”\nTraditional investors may be tempted to write off the entire phenomenon as temporary madness inspired by lockdowns and free government money. But that would be a mistake. If zero-commission brokerages and fun with GameStop broke down barriers for millions of new investors to open accounts, it’s almost certainly a good thing, as long as most people bet with money they don’t need immediately. It has jumped 32% in the six months through Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Mediaco Holding MDIA, the Indianapolis radio station owner, traded at $7.29, down 9.3%.</p>\n<p>James “Rev Shark” DePorre says in Real Moneythat the meme trading movement is hardly new and not nearly as efficient as the media have led average investors to believe.</p>\n<p>\"Learn how to pick your own stocks,” he says. “Social media trading is surprisingly uncreative in finding new stock ideas.\"</p>\n<p>Further, \"The business media likes to portray meme trading as something new, but this sort of trading has been part of markets from their very beginning hundreds of years ago,” DePorre says.</p>\n<p>“There will also be groups that question the conventional wisdom of the professionals that control the market. It is no surprise at all that there are small traders with limited capital who have no interest in the idea that they should hold a diversified portfolio of stocks for the long term.\"</p>\n<p>TheStreet.com Founder&nbsp;Jim Cramer also expressed caution&nbsp;this week. The next day, a plan to sell 11.55 million shares (which eventually sold at an average price of $50.85) sent AMC (ticker: AMC) tumbling.</p>\n<p>Even with Thursday’s decline, the stock has soared 297% over the past nine trading sessions, and is up an eye-popping 2,160% for the year.</p>\n<p>After&nbsp;GameStop(GME) and&nbsp;BlackBerry(BB), there seems to be little stopping the latest hot meme stock,not even a warning from AMC itself: “Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class A common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment,” the company said on Thursday in the filing to sell the shares.</p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, AMC sold 8.5 million shares to investment firm Mudrick Capital Management, which sold its stake at a profit that same day,Bloomberg reported. AMC called it a “very smart raising of cash so that we can grow this company.”</p>\n<p>More dilution could be coming. The company will ask shareholders to authorize the sale of an additional 25 million shares, starting in 2022, at its annual meeting next month.</p>\n<p>Despite the unusual warning and the dilution, some users doubled down on their enthusiasm for the stock in online forums this past week, noting that GameStop experienced similar volatility during its January rise. That just confounds and outrages traditional investors.</p>\n<p>“The surge in shares of AMC Entertainment is yet another sign of the reckless meme-stock-driven investing landscape that we find ourselves in today,” David Trainer, CEO of investment research firm New Constructs, recently wrote. “Wall Street insiders are preying on the naiveté of retail meme-stock traders. There is no fundamental reason to be buying shares of AMC Entertainment.”</p>\n<p>Trying to identify a fundamental narrative that can justify AMC’s ascent is admittedly difficult. Still, it is an exercise that might provide some insights for investors.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/62d362d944fe5c0a23bee485799d1195\" tg-width=\"956\" tg-height=\"637\"></p>\n<p>With the recent share sale, AMC has an enterprise value of about $35 billion, almost six times what it was at the end of 2018, a record-breaking year at the U.S. box office. At that time, the enterprise value for the three largest publicly traded theater operators was about 1.6 times the total domestic box office. (Theater chains typically have a lot of debt, making enterprise value a better measure.)</p>\n<p>AMC’s enterprise value is now about 17 times the dreadful, pandemic-affected domestic box office haul of just $2.1 billion in 2020.</p>\n<p>Roughly two-thirds of sales typically come from tickets. The rest comes from soda and, yes, popcorn. The challenge for the industry is whether enough moviegoers return and spend as they did before, after a year of staying home and streaming.</p>\n<p>The business might go through a period of consolidation, as it did earlier this century, when a shift to stadium seating pushed some operators into bankruptcy and mergers. Regal Cinemas, one of the large U.S. theater chains, filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Coming out of bankruptcy, Regal became a cash-generating machine—fewer movie-theater operators helped. And fewer now could usher in another era of higher returns on investment and better cash generation.</p>\n<p>Indeed, the hope is that AMC could be opportunistic in&nbsp;the postpandemic world, perhaps by making acquisitions. The recent gains in the stock have made that hope self-fulfilling, allowing the company to raise new capital—$1.25 billion through stock sales in this quarter alone.</p>\n<p>“With our increased liquidity, an increasingly vaccinated population, and the imminent release of blockbuster new movie titles, it is time for AMC to go on the offense again,” CEO Adam Aron said this past Tuesday.</p>\n<p>If AMC can boost market share, and if U.S. box office sales return to 2018 levels, the company’s total sales might hit $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 were $5.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Then, if profit margins improve with better industry scale, and if AMC’s investment in new theaters can drop as new capacity isn’t really needed, the company might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually. That is about three times the cash-generating potential of prior, prepandemic years.</p>\n<p>With $600 million in free cash flow, the stock’s free-cash-flow yield works out to about 2.4%, based on recent prices. That yield makes the stock look expensive, but not completely unreasonable. The&nbsp;S&amp;P 500&nbsp;index trades for about a 3.4% free-cash-flow yield; other consumer-discretionary stocks in the S&amp;P trade at a free-cash-flow yield of about 3.1%.</p>\n<p>While that may offer a faint glimmer of hope for fundamental investors, there are problems with the $600 million free-cash-flow scenario. There are a lot of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past.</p>\n<p>Consolidation in the industry is also no guarantee of success. AMC’s share of the market might rise, but there are still competitors: Regal Cinemas, now owned by&nbsp;Cineworld Group(CINE.UK), and&nbsp;Cinemark Holdings(CNK).</p>\n<p>Neither one is trading like AMC: Cineworld stock is up 283% from its 52-week low, but is off 78% from all-time highs, while Cinemark shares are up 183% from their 52-week low, but down 51% from their all-time high. AMC stock, by comparison, is up 2,320% from its 52-week low.</p>\n<p>And AMC and its peers also have to compete with streaming. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking, and the pandemic has accelerated that.</p>\n<p>Wall Street doesn’t see the potential. Ten analysts cover the stock, and the average price target is $5.25. The highest is $18 a share. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. There were fewer shares of AMC at the time. The old target prices implied an enterprise value of roughly $7 billion—a far cry from $35 billion.</p>\n<p>Analysts do, however, have positive free cash flow projected for AMC in the future—about $13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023.</p>\n<p>At these levels, the fundamental case for AMC stock is, to put it mildly, a stretch. Yet overvaluation alone is never a good reason to sell a stock short, betting on a price decline. High numbers of shares shorted are typically an element in the meme-fueled rises. These days, the risk of&nbsp;short squeezes&nbsp;has become far larger than the potential gain from the market realizing that a stock is too expensive.</p>\n<p>In the end, investing and trading are different skills. Both can make people money. The important thing is not to confuse the two.</p>\n<p>AMC investors may understand that. “I think that for most of the retail investors that you see buying quote-unquote meme stocks, it really is to prove a point,” says Natalie Camacho, a 27-year-old writer from California’s San Fernando Valley.</p>\n<p>She says she bought 11 shares of AMC in January for $100 as the meme-stock wave began to build. She expected the company to benefit by the reopening from Covid-19.</p>\n<p>Camacho says that she had felt as if the world of investing was closed to her, because she didn’t have $10,000 to put into stocks. On social media, the AMC trade has been portrayed as a battle of the little guys against the big Wall Street firms, which appeals to her.</p>\n<p>“What draws me to it is that communal sense, that we’re all in this together,” she says. “There’s a sense that if we pool our money together, we might not be rich, but we’ll have enough to make a difference.”</p>\n<p>Regardless of how it plays out, she is betting with money she can afford to lose. That is about three times the cash-generating potential of prior, prepandemic years.\nWith $600 million in free cash flow, the stock’s free-cash-flow yield works out to about 2.4%, based on recent prices. That yield makes the stock look expensive, but not completely unreasonable. The S&P 500 index trades for about a 3.4% free-cash-flow yield; other consumer-discretionary stocks in the S&P trade at a free-cash-flow yield of about 3.1%.\nWhile that may offer a faint glimmer of hope for fundamental investors, there are problems with the $600 million free-cash-flow scenario. There are a lot of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past.\nConsolidation in the industry is also no guarantee of success. AMC’s share of the market might rise, but there are still competitors: Regal Cinemas, now owned by Cineworld Group(CINE.UK), and Cinemark Holdings(CNK).\nNeither one is trading like AMC: Cineworld stock is up 283% from its 52-week low, but is off 78% from all-time highs, while Cinemark shares are up 183% from their 52-week low, but down 51% from their all-time high. AMC stock, by comparison, is up 2,320% from its 52-week low.\nAnd AMC and its peers also have to compete with streaming. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking, and the pandemic has accelerated that.\nWall Street doesn’t see the potential. Ten analysts cover the stock, and the average price target is $5.25. The highest is $18 a share. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. There were fewer shares of AMC at the time. The old target prices implied an enterprise value of roughly $7 billion—a far cry from $35 billion.\nAnalysts do, however, have positive free cash flow projected for AMC in the future—about $13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023.\nAt these levels, the fundamental case for AMC stock is, to put it mildly, a stretch. Yet overvaluation alone is never a good reason to sell a stock short, betting on a price decline. High numbers of shares shorted are typically an element in the meme-fueled rises. These days, the risk of short squeezes has become far larger than the potential gain from the market realizing that a stock is too expensive.\nIn the end, investing and trading are different skills. Both can make people money. The important thing is not to confuse the two.\nAMC investors may understand that. “I think that for most of the retail investors that you see buying quote-unquote meme stocks, it really is to prove a point,” says Natalie Camacho, a 27-year-old writer from California’s San Fernando Valley.\nShe says she bought 11 shares of AMC in January for $100 as the meme-stock wave began to build. She expected the company to benefit by the reopening from Covid-19.\nCamacho says that she had felt as if the world of investing was closed to her, because she didn’t have $10,000 to put into stocks. On social media, the AMC trade has been portrayed as a battle of the little guys against the big Wall Street firms, which appeals to her.\n“What draws me to it is that communal sense, that we’re all in this together,” she says. “There’s a sense that if we pool our money together, we might not be rich, but we’ll have enough to make a difference.”\nRegardless of how it plays out, she is betting with money she can afford to lose. Then, we searched for companies that went public on either the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. We also focused on entities that had at least a $1 billion market capitalization. We narrowed our search to companies with the highesttotal returns from their stock offering prices..</p><p>That left us with 11 names. First up:CureVac(ticker: CVAC), which was the screen’s best-performing IPO and had a total return of 596.75%. CureVac specializes in the messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology that is the basis of several leading Covid-19 vaccine programs. The German biotech company went public inAugust at $16 a shareand soared 249% in its first day, with the stock closing at $55.90. In January, CureVacstruck a deal with Bayerto accelerate the development and supply of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine is now in clinical trials, and Phase2b/3 data is expected this summer. Since its IPO, the stock has nearly doubled, closingFriday at $111.48 .</p><p>Strong performances need not be dictated by success on the first day of trading. Four of the companies that made our list were busted deals—meaning that their shares fell below their IPO prices on the first day of trading.</p><p>Case in point:ZIM Integrated Shipping(ZIM). The asset-light shipping company went public in January with a $15 offering price,but closed that day at $11.50. Yet by May 19, ZIM’s stockhad gained 295%after itreported first-quarter earnings of $589.6 million, or $5.35 a share. The companyalso declared a special cash dividend of $2 a share. ZIM is the second-best-performing IPO in the past 12 months, based on a total return of 209.33%, according to FactSet. It closed on Friday at $46.40.</p><p>Another example isAcademy Sports &amp; Outdoors(ASO): The companywent public in Octoberwith a $13 offering price, with the stock closing at $12.99 during its first day of public trading<b>.</b>Academy was profitable when it went public, a rarity in the IPO market. InMarch, the company reported that its net incomesoared 416%, to $91.5 million, or 97 cents a share, for its fourth fiscal quarter ended Jan. 30. Its shares have nearly tripled since the IPO, and were trading at $36.53 on Friday. Since the IPO, the shares have fallen nearly 25%, amid a broader technology selloff.</p><p>The company, however, has reported some positive developments, like a deal in February that wouldgive BigCommerce customersthe ability to sell directly on Walmart Marketplace. It also reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results.
