Post-Pandemic","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2144774740","media":"Investors","summary":"Software giant Adobe is benefiting as the economy reopens following the Covid-19 pandemic, a senior executive says.","content":"
Software giant Adobe is benefiting as the economy reopens as the Covid-19 pandemic wanes, a senior executive says. The company's beat-and-raise quarterly report provided proof of that. ADBE stock jumped on Friday.
\n
The maker of digital media and marketing software late Thursday reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that easily topped expectations. Adobe also guided above views for the current quarter.
\n
The San Jose, Calif.-based company earned an adjusted $3.03 a share on sales of $3.84 billion in the quarter ended June 4. On a year-over-year basis, Adobe earnings rose 24% while sales climbed 23%.
\n
For the current quarter, Adobe expects to earn an adjusted $3 a share, up 17%, on sales of $3.88 billion, up 20%.
\n
ADBE Stock Rises After Earnings Report
\n
In morning trading on the stock market today, ADBE stock advanced 2.2%, near 563.35. Remember, finding the nextmeme stockbefore the price takes off and selling at the high point is virtually impossible without a time machine.
\n
Instead, I like buying shares in high-quality companies with strong market positions that have competitive advantages that aren't easily duplicated. Granted, this is easier said than done, but these companies fit the description.
\n
\n
1. Amazon
\n
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has become synonymous with e-commerce, but the company is much more than that. It has done this by sticking to its principles, which include focusing on the customer, innovating, and planning for the long term. You can see this through its popular Amazon Prime subscription service, which includes delivery charges, and hardware devices like Alexa and Kindle. There is also its fast-growing, higher-margin Amazon Web Services (AWS) business that provides cloud computing services.
\n
Its presence is so dominant that Amazon completely changes an industry's dynamics when it decides to enter the fray. That's because it often provides cheap prices and fast delivery -- a compelling proposition. This happened when it pushed further into selling food and apparel, for instance. The company is also moving further into offering prescription drugs.
\n
While its long-term focus means Amazon is willing to forgo short-term profits, the company is hugely profitable. Its operating profit grew from 2016's $4.2 billion to $22.9 billion last year. In the first quarter, the company's profit more than doubled from $4 billion to $8.8 billion.
\n
2. Costco
\n
Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST) has created quite a shopping experience. Known for its wide aisles, bulk items, and free samples, it has built a loyal and growing membership.
\n
Costco's simple formula is hard to replicate: It focuses on high-quality merchandise and services, and sells them at low unit prices. Costco's paid members have grown from 47.6 million in 2016 to 58.1 million last year (the fiscal year ends on June 30). Meanwhile, its retention rate has hovered around 90%.
\n
With a focus on customer needs, it even has a generous return policy to help members have confidence in their purchases.
\n
Management also keeps an eye on improving results. It has had positive same-store sales (comps) for many years, including a 9% increase last year after excluding the effects of gasoline price changes and foreign currency exchange translation. Operating income grew from $3.7 billion to $5.4 billion over the last five years.
\n
Recent results also provide encouragement that management continues to execute. Comps increased by 15.2% for the first three quarters of 2021, and operating income grew by more than 26% to $4.4 billion.
\n
While income investors can find higher yields than Costco's 0.8%, it does have a history of annually raising dividends. This includes increasing May's payment to $0.79 from the previous quarter's $0.70. But better still, the board of directors has declared large special dividends every few years. The most recent was a $10 payment last December.
\n
3. Walmart
\n
Walmart (NYSE:WMT) has built itself into the world's largest retailer, serving more than 240 million customers every week. The company, which opened its first discount store nearly six decades ago, squeezes costs and passes these savings on to the customer. This allows Walmart to offer the lowest prices on its goods, making it difficult for competitors to keep up.
\n
It isn't sitting still, either. It is keeping pace with online competitors, namely Amazon, by investing in technology to provide a seamless omnichannel experience to its shoppers. This includes launching the subscription service Walmart+, which provides delivery, gasoline discounts, and faster checkout at its stores.
\n
Last year, its adjusted revenue rose by 7.7% to $564.2 billion, driving operating income 9.3% higher to $23.4 billion. In the first quarter, revenue growth was about 2%, and management expects a low-single-digit percentage increase for the year. Its guidance calls for flattish operating income.
\n
While this outlook undoubtedly disappointed some investors, I'm not concerned. Management has its eyes on the long-term picture, and it is investing in technology to better serve its customers and remain a dominant retailer.
\n
Walmart also offers a 1.6% yield, and it has also raised its quarterly dividend annually since initiating a payout in 1974. Remember, finding the nextmeme stockbefore the price takes off and selling at the high point is virtually impossible without a time machine.\nInstead, I like buying shares in high-quality companies with strong market positions that have competitive advantages that aren't easily duplicated. Granted, this is easier said than done, but these companies fit the description.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\n1. Amazon\nAmazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has become synonymous with e-commerce, but the company is much more than that. It has done this by sticking to its principles, which include focusing on the customer, innovating, and planning for the long term. You can see this through its popular Amazon Prime subscription service, which includes delivery charges, and hardware devices like Alexa and Kindle. There is also its fast-growing, higher-margin Amazon Web Services (AWS) business that provides cloud computing services.\nIts presence is so dominant that Amazon completely changes an industry's dynamics when it decides to enter the fray. That's because it often provides cheap prices and fast delivery -- a compelling proposition. This happened when it pushed further into selling food and apparel, for instance. The company is also moving further into offering prescription drugs.\nWhile its long-term focus means Amazon is willing to forgo short-term profits, the company is hugely profitable. Its operating profit grew from 2016's $4.2 billion to $22.9 billion last year. In the first quarter, the company's profit more than doubled from $4 billion to $8.8 billion.\n2. Costco\nCostco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST) has created quite a shopping experience. Known for its wide aisles, bulk items, and free samples, it has built a loyal and growing membership.\nCostco's simple formula is hard to replicate: It focuses on high-quality merchandise and services, and sells them at low unit prices. Costco's paid members have grown from 47.6 million in 2016 to 58.1 million last year (the fiscal year ends on June 30). Meanwhile, its retention rate has hovered around 90%.\nWith a focus on customer needs, it even has a generous return policy to help members have confidence in their purchases.\nManagement also keeps an eye on improving results. It has had positive same-store sales (comps) for many years, including a 9% increase last year after excluding the effects of gasoline price changes and foreign currency exchange translation. Operating income grew from $3.7 billion to $5.4 billion over the last five years.\nRecent results also provide encouragement that management continues to execute. Comps increased by 15.2% for the first three quarters of 2021, and operating income grew by more than 26% to $4.4 billion.\nWhile income investors can find higher yields than Costco's 0.8%, it does have a history of annually raising dividends. This includes increasing May's payment to $0.79 from the previous quarter's $0.70. But better still, the board of directors has declared large special dividends every few years. The most recent was a $10 payment last December.\n3. Walmart\nWalmart (NYSE:WMT) has built itself into the world's largest retailer, serving more than 240 million customers every week. The company, which opened its first discount store nearly six decades ago, squeezes costs and passes these savings on to the customer. This allows Walmart to offer the lowest prices on its goods, making it difficult for competitors to keep up.\nIt isn't sitting still, either. It is keeping pace with online competitors, namely Amazon, by investing in technology to provide a seamless omnichannel experience to its shoppers. This includes launching the subscription service Walmart+, which provides delivery, gasoline discounts, and faster checkout at its stores.\nLast year, its adjusted revenue rose by 7.7% to $564.2 billion, driving operating income 9.3% higher to $23.4 billion. In the first quarter, revenue growth was about 2%, and management expects a low-single-digit percentage increase for the year. Its guidance calls for flattish operating income.\nWhile this outlook undoubtedly disappointed some investors, I'm not concerned. Management has its eyes on the long-term picture, and it is investing in technology to better serve its customers and remain a dominant retailer.\nWalmart also offers a 1.6% yield, and it has also raised its quarterly dividend annually since initiating a payout in 1974. Already aDividend Aristocrat, it will become a Dividend King when the streak hits 50 years.\nWhile these are three different companies in various stages, each is a strong addition to your portfolio. Adding them will give you a high-growth stock, a steady grower that tends to pay large dividends every few years, and a dominant retailer that continues to grow and regularly increase payments to shareholders.\nThat's a winning combination that should make these core holdings a great addition to your portfolio.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":168,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187973892,"gmtCreate":1623737495116,"gmtModify":1631884324821,"author":{"id":"3574984019579159","authorId":"3574984019579159","name":"Dash2897","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ee75b01ecb536302d12eab10806834c","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574984019579159","authorIdStr":"3574984019579159"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hope it recovers and prepare for a future split","listText":"Hope it recovers and prepare for a future split","text":"Hope it recovers and prepare for a future split","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/187973892","repostId":"1106218942","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":95,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187979514,"gmtCreate":1623737465838,"gmtModify":1631888361871,"author":{"id":"3574984019579159","authorId":"3574984019579159","name":"Dash2897","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ee75b01ecb536302d12eab10806834c","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574984019579159","authorIdStr":"3574984019579159"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Agree","listText":"Agree","text":"Agree","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/187979514","repostId":"1165913483","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1165913483","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1623735942,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1165913483?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-15 13:45","market":"us","language":"en","title":"China’s Gen Z are set to spend big – analysts pick 3 stocks that could be winners","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1165913483","media":"CNBC","summary":"Investors are betting on an emerging generation of spenders in China – about 250 million people know","content":"
\n
Investors are betting on an emerging generation of spenders in China – about 250 million people known as Generation Z, roughly equal to 75% of the U.S. population.\nBorn between 1995 and 2009, these ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"cnbc_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; This generation will likely spend most on housing, food and beverage, and leisure-related categories, the firm said.\nIt may seem counterintuitive to invest in young people when China’s population is aging rapidly. But investment firm China Renaissance said Gen Z is the group to focus on for those who want to cash in on opportunities in China’s economy.\nInvestors can get a more direct understanding of high-growth consumer trends by looking at Gen Z’s spending habits, said Charlie Chen, the firm’s head of consumer research. “Because the aging population’s consumption habits are the same as when they were young, the market has already become familiar with them,” he said in a Chinese statement translated by CNBC.\nHere are some analysts’ top picks — one with a 34% upside:\nBilibili\nThe U.S. and Hong Kong-listed gaming and animation video platform Bilibili is one of the primary companies analysts mention when talking about Chinese young people’s interests.\nBilibili is launching a dating-theme reality show targeting Gen Z viewers in July, Morgan Stanley analysts said in a May 26 note.\n“We see earnings upside as (Bilibili) diversifies its revenue streams from games to advertising and live broadcasting revenue,” the analysts said. They noted that over 60% of registered users from more than a decade ago are still active this year.\nThe analysts said the company’s ability to profit from its users is still low compared with its competitors —but they’re confident in Bilibili’s ability to increase monetization. With self-developed games in the next three to five years, Bilibili could double its game revenue from about 6 billion yuan (about $936.8 million) this year, the report said.\nThe Morgan Stanley analysts have a $155 price target on the Nasdaq-listed stock, up 34% from Monday’s close of $115.45.\nPop Mart\nPop Mart is most famous for selling “blind boxes” which contain various collectible figurines that the buyer won’t know the model of until after buying a box. The company went public to much fanfare in Hong Kong late last year, and now has a market valuation of about $12.17 billion, according to Eikon.\nThe stock is still up more than 65% from its IPO, but shares have fallen about 20% so far this year.\nAmong Gen Z’s five most costly hobbies, pop toys are probably the most unknown to other generations, and saw the biggest increase in total spending, according to China Renaissance. The other categories were sneakers, e-sports, photography and cosplay.\nHowever, CLSA’s Terrance Liu said in a note this week that Pop Mart has come under fire in the last few weeks for reports that some employees asked female job applicants about their plans to have children. The company apologized on June 4.\nAbout 75% of Pop Mart’s customers and 69% of employees are women, Liu said, adding that “with rapid expansion and increase in the number of employees, Pop Mart may face some challenges in corporate governance and management.”\nCLSA maintains a buy rating on the stock, with a price target of 71 Hong Kong dollars, up 5.4% from Friday’s close of 67.35 Hong Kong dollars a share. Markets were closed Monday for a holiday.\nLuzhou Laojiao\nLuzhou Laojiao is a liquor brand that has attracted many young consumers, making it a stand out against an industry many worry will die out with its older client base, CLSA analysts said in a consumer trends report last month.\nThe investment bank said Laojiao has opened several pop-up stores in various Chinese cities since August, and launched collaborations with ice cream and perfume brands. CLSA said Laojiao has the production capacity to meet demand, and can target the fragmented mid- to high-end “baijiu” segment. The S&P 500 also hit an intraday record of 4,249.74, overtaking its May 7 high after the market traded sideways for a month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 19.10 points, or less than 0.1%, to 34,466.24, while the Nasdaq Composite gained about 0.8% to 14,020.33.\nConsumer prices for May accelerated at their fastest pace since the summer of 2008 amid the economic recovery from the pandemic-triggered recession, the Labor Department reported Thursday.\nThe consumer price index, which represents a basket including food, energy, groceries and prices across a spectrum of goods, rose 5% from a year ago. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting a gain of 4.7%.\n\"I think there were a lot of people who held back, who wanted to see the hotter inflation number,\" CNBC's Jim Cramer said on \"Squawk on the Street.\" \"Now they've said, 'OK, now that's over with. Used car and truck prices jumped more than 7%, accounting for one-third of the total increase for the month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The jump in used car prices likely reflects a temporary phenomenon related to the pandemic and auto supply.\nA separate report released Thursday showed that jobless claims for the week ended June 5 came in at 376,000, versus a Dow Jones estimate of 370,000. The next day, a plan to sell 11.55 million shares (which eventually sold at an average price of $50.85) sent AMC (ticker: AMC) tumbling.
\n
Even with Thursday’s decline, the stock has soared 297% over the past nine trading sessions, and is up an eye-popping 2,160% for the year.
\n
After GameStop(GME) and BlackBerry(BB), there seems to be little stopping the latest hot meme stock, not even a warning from AMC itself: “Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class A common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment,” the company said on Thursday in the filing to sell the shares.
\n
Earlier in the week, AMC sold 8.5 million shares to investment firm Mudrick Capital Management, which sold its stake at a profit that same day,Bloomberg reported. AMC called it a “very smart raising of cash so that we can grow this company.”
\n
More dilution could be coming. The company will ask shareholders to authorize the sale of an additional 25 million shares, starting in 2022, at its annual meeting next month.
\n
Despite the unusual warning and the dilution, some users doubled down on their enthusiasm for the stock in online forums this past week, noting that GameStop experienced similar volatility during its January rise. That just confounds and outrages traditional investors.
\n
“The surge in shares of AMC Entertainment is yet another sign of the reckless meme-stock-driven investing landscape that we find ourselves in today,” David Trainer, CEO of investment research firm New Constructs, recently wrote. “Wall Street insiders are preying on the naiveté of retail meme-stock traders. There is no fundamental reason to be buying shares of AMC Entertainment.”
\n
Trying to identify a fundamental narrative that can justify AMC’s ascent is admittedly difficult. Still, it is an exercise that might provide some insights for investors.
\n

\n
With the recent share sale, AMC has an enterprise value of about $35 billion, almost six times what it was at the end of 2018, a record-breaking year at the U.S. box office. At that time, the enterprise value for the three largest publicly traded theater operators was about 1.6 times the total domestic box office. (Theater chains typically have a lot of debt, making enterprise value a better measure.)
\n
AMC’s enterprise value is now about 17 times the dreadful, pandemic-affected domestic box office haul of just $2.1 billion in 2020.
\n
Roughly two-thirds of sales typically come from tickets. The rest comes from soda and, yes, popcorn. The challenge for the industry is whether enough moviegoers return and spend as they did before, after a year of staying home and streaming.
\n
The business might go through a period of consolidation, as it did earlier this century, when a shift to stadium seating pushed some operators into bankruptcy and mergers. Regal Cinemas, one of the large U.S. theater chains, filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Coming out of bankruptcy, Regal became a cash-generating machine—fewer movie-theater operators helped. And fewer now could usher in another era of higher returns on investment and better cash generation.
\n
Indeed, the hope is that AMC could be opportunistic in the postpandemic world, perhaps by making acquisitions. The recent gains in the stock have made that hope self-fulfilling, allowing the company to raise new capital—$1.25 billion through stock sales in this quarter alone.
\n
“With our increased liquidity, an increasingly vaccinated population, and the imminent release of blockbuster new movie titles, it is time for AMC to go on the offense again,” CEO Adam Aron said this past Tuesday.
\n
If AMC can boost market share, and if U.S. box office sales return to 2018 levels, the company’s total sales might hit $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 were $5.5 billion.
\n
Then, if profit margins improve with better industry scale, and if AMC’s investment in new theaters can drop as new capacity isn’t really needed, the company might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually. That is about three times the cash-generating potential of prior, prepandemic years.
\n
With $600 million in free cash flow, the stock’s free-cash-flow yield works out to about 2.4%, based on recent prices. That yield makes the stock look expensive, but not completely unreasonable. The S&P 500 index trades for about a 3.4% free-cash-flow yield; other consumer-discretionary stocks in the S&P trade at a free-cash-flow yield of about 3.1%.
\n
While that may offer a faint glimmer of hope for fundamental investors, there are problems with the $600 million free-cash-flow scenario. There are a lot of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past.
\n
Consolidation in the industry is also no guarantee of success. AMC’s share of the market might rise, but there are still competitors: Regal Cinemas, now owned by Cineworld Group(CINE.UK), and Cinemark Holdings(CNK).
\n
Neither one is trading like AMC: Cineworld stock is up 283% from its 52-week low, but is off 78% from all-time highs, while Cinemark shares are up 183% from their 52-week low, but down 51% from their all-time high. AMC stock, by comparison, is up 2,320% from its 52-week low.
\n
And AMC and its peers also have to compete with streaming. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking, and the pandemic has accelerated that.
\n
Wall Street doesn’t see the potential. Ten analysts cover the stock, and the average price target is $5.25. The highest is $18 a share. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. There were fewer shares of AMC at the time. The old target prices implied an enterprise value of roughly $7 billion—a far cry from $35 billion.
\n
Analysts do, however, have positive free cash flow projected for AMC in the future—about $13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023.
\n
At these levels, the fundamental case for AMC stock is, to put it mildly, a stretch. Yet overvaluation alone is never a good reason to sell a stock short, betting on a price decline. High numbers of shares shorted are typically an element in the meme-fueled rises. These days, the risk of short squeezes has become far larger than the potential gain from the market realizing that a stock is too expensive.
\n
In the end, investing and trading are different skills. Both can make people money. The important thing is not to confuse the two.
\n
AMC investors may understand that. “I think that for most of the retail investors that you see buying quote-unquote meme stocks, it really is to prove a point,” says Natalie Camacho, a 27-year-old writer from California’s San Fernando Valley.
\n
She says she bought 11 shares of AMC in January for $100 as the meme-stock wave began to build. She expected the company to benefit by the reopening from Covid-19.
\n
Camacho says that she had felt as if the world of investing was closed to her, because she didn’t have $10,000 to put into stocks. On social media, the AMC trade has been portrayed as a battle of the little guys against the big Wall Street firms, which appeals to her.
\n
“What draws me to it is that communal sense, that we’re all in this together,” she says. “There’s a sense that if we pool our money together, we might not be rich, but we’ll have enough to make a difference.”
\n
Regardless of how it plays out, she is betting with money she can afford to lose. As of Thursday morning, her $100 investment had grown to $460. “Maybe it’s a long-term bad idea, but for now we’re holding,” she says.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
AMC Stock Is Up 3,100%. The company will ask shareholders to authorize the sale of an additional 25 million shares, starting in 2022, at its annual meeting next month.\nDespite the unusual warning and the dilution, some users doubled down on their enthusiasm for the stock in online forums this past week, noting that GameStop experienced similar volatility during its January rise. That just confounds and outrages traditional investors.\n“The surge in shares of AMC Entertainment is yet another sign of the reckless meme-stock-driven investing landscape that we find ourselves in today,” David Trainer, CEO of investment research firm New Constructs, recently wrote. “Wall Street insiders are preying on the naiveté of retail meme-stock traders. There is no fundamental reason to be buying shares of AMC Entertainment.”\nTrying to identify a fundamental narrative that can justify AMC’s ascent is admittedly difficult. Still, it is an exercise that might provide some insights for investors.\n\nWith the recent share sale, AMC has an enterprise value of about $35 billion, almost six times what it was at the end of 2018, a record-breaking year at the U.S. box office. At that time, the enterprise value for the three largest publicly traded theater operators was about 1.6 times the total domestic box office. (Theater chains typically have a lot of debt, making enterprise value a better measure.)\nAMC’s enterprise value is now about 17 times the dreadful, pandemic-affected domestic box office haul of just $2.1 billion in 2020.\nRoughly two-thirds of sales typically come from tickets. The rest comes from soda and, yes, popcorn. The challenge for the industry is whether enough moviegoers return and spend as they did before, after a year of staying home and streaming.\nThe business might go through a period of consolidation, as it did earlier this century, when a shift to stadium seating pushed some operators into bankruptcy and mergers. Regal Cinemas, one of the large U.S. theater chains, filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Coming out of bankruptcy, Regal became a cash-generating machine—fewer movie-theater operators helped. And fewer now could usher in another era of higher returns on investment and better cash generation.\nIndeed, the hope is that AMC could be opportunistic in the postpandemic world, perhaps by making acquisitions. The recent gains in the stock have made that hope self-fulfilling, allowing the company to raise new capital—$1.25 billion through stock sales in this quarter alone.\n“With our increased liquidity, an increasingly vaccinated population, and the imminent release of blockbuster new movie titles, it is time for AMC to go on the offense again,” CEO Adam Aron said this past Tuesday.\nIf AMC can boost market share, and if U.S. box office sales return to 2018 levels, the company’s total sales might hit $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 were $5.5 billion.\nThen, if profit margins improve with better industry scale, and if AMC’s investment in new theaters can drop as new capacity isn’t really needed, the company might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually. That is about three times the cash-generating potential of prior, prepandemic years.\nWith $600 million in free cash flow, the stock’s free-cash-flow yield works out to about 2.4%, based on recent prices. That yield makes the stock look expensive, but not completely unreasonable. The S&P 500 index trades for about a 3.4% free-cash-flow yield; other consumer-discretionary stocks in the S&P trade at a free-cash-flow yield of about 3.1%.\nWhile that may offer a faint glimmer of hope for fundamental investors, there are problems with the $600 million free-cash-flow scenario. There are a lot of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past.\nConsolidation in the industry is also no guarantee of success. AMC’s share of the market might rise, but there are still competitors: Regal Cinemas, now owned by Cineworld Group(CINE.UK), and Cinemark Holdings(CNK).\nNeither one is trading like AMC: Cineworld stock is up 283% from its 52-week low, but is off 78% from all-time highs, while Cinemark shares are up 183% from their 52-week low, but down 51% from their all-time high. AMC stock, by comparison, is up 2,320% from its 52-week low.\nAnd AMC and its peers also have to compete with streaming. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking, and the pandemic has accelerated that.\nWall Street doesn’t see the potential. Ten analysts cover the stock, and the average price target is $5.25. The highest is $18 a share. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. There were fewer shares of AMC at the time. The old target prices implied an enterprise value of roughly $7 billion—a far cry from $35 billion.\nAnalysts do, however, have positive free cash flow projected for AMC in the future—about $13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023.\nAt these levels, the fundamental case for AMC stock is, to put it mildly, a stretch. Yet overvaluation alone is never a good reason to sell a stock short, betting on a price decline. High numbers of shares shorted are typically an element in the meme-fueled rises. These days, the risk of short squeezes has become far larger than the potential gain from the market realizing that a stock is too expensive.\nIn the end, investing and trading are different skills. Both can make people money. The important thing is not to confuse the two.\nAMC investors may understand that. “I think that for most of the retail investors that you see buying quote-unquote meme stocks, it really is to prove a point,” says Natalie Camacho, a 27-year-old writer from California’s San Fernando Valley.\nShe says she bought 11 shares of AMC in January for $100 as the meme-stock wave began to build. She expected the company to benefit by the reopening from Covid-19.\nCamacho says that she had felt as if the world of investing was closed to her, because she didn’t have $10,000 to put into stocks. On social media, the AMC trade has been portrayed as a battle of the little guys against the big Wall Street firms, which appeals to her.\n“What draws me to it is that communal sense, that we’re all in this together,” she says. “There’s a sense that if we pool our money together, we might not be rich, but we’ll have enough to make a difference.”\nRegardless of how it plays out, she is betting with money she can afford to lose. As of Thursday morning, her $100 investment had grown to $460. “Maybe it’s a long-term bad idea, but for now we’re holding,” she says.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":441,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187972264,"gmtCreate":1623737703958,"gmtModify":1634029312713,"author":{"id":"3574984019579159","authorId":"3574984019579159","name":"Dash2897","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ee75b01ecb536302d12eab10806834c","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574984019579159","authorIdStr":"3574984019579159"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I am happy to own a few nio shares and would buymore for the future ","listText":"I am happy to own a few nio shares and would buymore for the future ","text":"I am happy to own a few nio shares and would buymore for the future","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/187972264","repostId":"1140305126","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":331,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187979514,"gmtCreate":1623737465838,"gmtModify":1631888361871,"author":{"id":"3574984019579159","authorId":"3574984019579159","name":"Dash2897","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ee75b01ecb536302d12eab10806834c","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574984019579159","authorIdStr":"3574984019579159"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Agree","listText":"Agree","text":"Agree","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/187979514","repostId":"1165913483","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1165913483","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1623735942,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1165913483?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-15 13:45","market":"us","language":"en","title":"China’s Gen Z are set to spend big – analysts pick 3 stocks that could be winners","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1165913483","media":"CNBC","summary":"Investors are betting on an emerging generation of spenders in China – about 250 million people know","content":"
Baijiu is a highly alcoholic liquor that’s a staple at Chinese business and government dinners.\nAs of June 8, the analysts have a price target of 283 yuan, up about 9.5% from Friday’s close of 258.25 yuan.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":234,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":356904556,"gmtCreate":1616747097675,"gmtModify":1634524231570,"author":{"id":"3574984019579159","authorId":"3574984019579159","name":"Dash2897","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ee75b01ecb536302d12eab10806834c","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574984019579159","authorIdStr":"3574984019579159"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes agree","listText":"Yes agree","text":"Yes agree","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/356904556","repostId":"1193639825","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1193639825","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1616741747,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1193639825?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-03-26 14:55","market":"us","language":"en","title":"GameStop, AMC and other meme stocks are meming again","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1193639825","media":"CNN Business","summary":"New York (CNN Business) - Meme stocks were back in business Thursday, as investors bought up shares ","content":"
New York (CNN Business) - Meme stocks were back in business Thursday, as investors bought up shares of GameStop, boosting other Reddit-favorite stocks along with it.
\n
GameStop (GME) soared nearly 53% Thursday, lifted by investors' hopes that a board overhaul could transform the video game store into a digital-first Amazon(AMZN) competitor. The company announced Tuesday that former Amazon fulfillment chief Jenna Owens would take over as GameStop's chief operating officer.\nThe company also said that it would replace its chief financial officer and shrink its board to nine directors from the current 13. Eight of GameStop's current directors will not seek reelection at the company's annual meeting later this year.\nThe company's stock has taken a pounding over the past few weeks -- particularly on Wednesday, when GameStop tumbled 33% following its miserable earnings report. Although it highlighted a few bright spots, including exploding digital growth, overall sales and profit fell short of Wall Street expectations.\nBut the Reddit army on subreddit WallStreetBets is a mighty one, and they were hopeful that GameStop had been oversold. The company's stock had plummeted 54% over the past two weeks, and they believe GameStop was getting cheap.\nAs shares of GameStop got a boost, so too did other chronically shorted meme stocks that redditors have sent on a wild ride this year. For example,AMC's (AMC) stock was up 21% and Koss (KOSS) rose 57%.Macy's (M) rose about 8%.\nAMC had been beaten to a pulp earlier this week after Disney announced it would delay \"Black Widow\" yet again and then premiere the Marvel superhero film simultaneously on Disney+ and in theaters. The movie theater company's stock had been down 35% this week.\nMeme stocks soared as the broader market was having trouble figuring out what to do. TheS&P 500(SPX)was 0.5% higher, and the Dow (INDU) was up 199 points, or 0.6%. As we have seen good news on that front of course recently, that is a bad outcome for Zoom (at least in the near term). While the company is off to a good start in 2021, the potential for sales declines on a year-over-year basis later this year makes me frightened at a huge 25 times sales multiple.
\n
My April Take
\n
Zoom is one of the undisputed beneficiaries of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the operating momentum was unheard of. That rapid growth is clearly reliant on the pandemic which creates a key risk as well, as in my opinion the outlook is largely binary, related to the potential reopening of the economies across the globe.
\n
That is not entirely fair as well, as the binary outcome does not mean that we return to a pre-Covid-19 world either, because even if the pandemic comes to an end, demand will in all likelihood come in (far) above the run rate reported ahead of the pandemic.
\n
The thesis started with 2019, a year in which the company grew sales by 88% to $623 million, and with shares trading at $60 ahead of the pandemic, valuations were elevated at around 20 times sales. Originally the company guided for 50% revenue growth in 2020, yet the pandemic changed everything. First quarter sales in 2020 jumped 169% as a result of the pandemic, triggering a doubling of the annual sales outlook.
\n
Second quarter sales were up 355% in the second quarter, 367% in the third quarter and growth even topped 369% in the fourth quarter. Fourth quarter revenues of $882 million were essentially equal to the original outlook for all of 2020, showing the real extent of the momentum!
\n
With sales running at a run rate of $3.5 billion, earnings were coming in around a billion a year as the great momentum triggered a huge run in the shares from $60 ahead of the pandemic, to a high of nearly $600 in October. Shares are now down to $330, as nearly half the gains have been given back. Working with a 300 million shares count at the time of the fourth quarter results, valued at $322 per share, the company was valued at $96 billion, for a $92 billion enterprise valuation.
\n
This came down to 26 times annualized sales and 100 times earnings. While >300% growth rates look compelling, comparables from now on will get difficult, but moreover is the uncertainty on the outcome of the pandemic, and thus the demand for Zoom's products, as well as potential about becoming a commodity like product and competition from Teams, among others.
\n
With the company guiding for first quarter 2021 sales of $900-$905 million and full year sales of $3.77 billion for 2021, it was evident to me that sequential growth would be coming to a standstill as this did not rhyme with a 25 times sales multiple in my book. This was the key reason why I have not initiated a position yet despite the near 50% pullback seen in the share price.
\n
Solid Start To 2021
\n
Zoom started the year on a solid note with first quarter sales up 191% to $956 million. The percentage growth rates come down quite a bit already after the first quarter of last year already included a huge bump in sales, and with shares running at a $3.8 billion run rate, it is evident that the best of the growth is a thing of the past already. The company continues to be very profitable with after-tax earnings of $227 million resulting in nearly 25% after-tax profit margins, yet earnings only trend around $3 per share here.
\n
A share count of 305 million shares now trade at $330 which implies an equity valuation just above the $100 billion mark, for an enterprise value of around $96 billion. Based on the current run rate of $3.8 billion in sales, the company trades at 25 times sales. On the back of the solid first quarter results, the company hiked the midpoint of the full year sales guidance to $3.98 billion, essentially a $210 million increase in the sales guidance. This suggests somewhat stronger momentum in the remainder of the year, despite the promising trends related to the pandemic. Even after the hike, shares still trade at 24 times sales.
\n
While the hike in the guidance for the entire year is comfortable, it still suggests that sequential revenue and earnings numbers are likely seen flattish from here onward, as I fear that in case of a big re-opening we might even see temporary negative growth numbers on a year-over-year basis. Those prospects frighten me with a current 24 times sales multiple attached to the business, and even as the business is very profitable, I am very scared on these prospects, meaning that I continue to stand on the sideline.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Zoom: Zooming In, Not Connecting
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nZoom: Zooming In, Not Connecting\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-06 08:44 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nAfter a ridiculous 2020, Zoom previously guided for flattish sequential trends in 2021.\nThe first quarter has actually been surprisingly strong as the company hiked the full-year guidance as ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"ZM":"Zoom"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4433258-zoom-zooming-in-not-connecting","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1125022737","content_text":"Summary\n\nAfter a ridiculous 2020, Zoom previously guided for flattish sequential trends in 2021.\nThe first quarter has actually been surprisingly strong as the company hiked the full-year guidance as well.\nDespite this positive news flow, I am very worried about potential lack of year-over-year growth later this year at a 25 times sales multiple.\n\nPhoto by Sundry Photography/iStock Editorial via Getty Images\nZoom Video Communications (ZM) started 2021 on a very strong note but its shares have seen continued pressure during the tech sell-off in recent months.\nIn April of this year, I concluded that Zoom ended 2020 on a solid note, yet I was still not connecting to the shares as the 2021 guidance was largely in line with the fourth quarter run rate, leaving little to no sequential growth.\nFurthermore, the revenues to be realized in the future depend heavily on the outcome of the pandemic. As we have seen good news on that front of course recently, that is a bad outcome for Zoom (at least in the near term).
