inflation can be a “big problem” for sustainable investors, according to Bernstein, which named the best stocks to ride out this trend.\nThe bank said that inflation, and the potential for higher inflation, reflect “the single most important narrative” driving markets and investor concerns this year.\nIt’s already impacted environmental, social and governance (ESG) stocks in a big way. Clean energy stocks are down roughly 20% this year on an absolute basis, while energy, commodities, defense and tobacco stocks have all outperformed. This sharp contrast comes despite flows into ESG funds continuing at a record pace.\nRising prices will likely continue to pose a significant challenge for ESG funds in particular, Bernstein said, but added that there are a number of ways for these investors to lower their risk exposure.\nIn a note published June 10, Bernstein screened for ESG stocks in the U.S., Europe and Asia that are best positioned for rising inflation.\nBernstein screened for the stocks by considering three ways that sustainable investors could brace for a rising inflationary environment:\n1. Seeking out high-scoring ESG stocks that are positively exposed to rising bond yields.\n2. Investing in high-scoring ESG stocks which have robust pricing power.\n3. Identifying companies that have increased exposure to the energy, commodities and financials sectors.\nIn considering stocks that should be in an ESG portfolio, Bernstein recognized that investors may struggle to prioritize so-called “sin” stocks, such as energy and commodity companies, although these “value” stocks usually perform well when inflation and bond yields rise. Value stocks are seen as being underappreciated by the market.\nBernstein also highlighted that financials tend to be left on the sidelines by ESG investors, since measuring their environmental credentials can be tricky.\nU.S.\nThe analysts said that U.S. ESG funds are “not that well positioned” for inflation because they tend to be underweight on so-called value stocks. The bank did, however, single outState Street,LearandBank of New York Mellonamong its top picks of those positively exposed to rising bond yields. Earlier this month, shares of Orphazymeshot upmore than 200% in anticipation of a green light that never came.</p>\n<p>Instead of an approval decision for arimoclomol, the agency asked for more information in the form of a complete response letter (CRL). That came as a shock to heaps of investors who were new to the complex world of drug development and were expecting a massiveshort squeeze.</p>\n<p>Many institutional investors were betting against Orphazyme because its lead candidate failed to achieve the primary endpoint in the pivotal study underpinning the application. Arimoclomol also failed to improve patients' scores on a secondary endpoint specifically requested by the FDA.</p>\n<p><b>Now what</b></p>\n<p>According to Orphazyme, the company needs to further substantiate the validity of the primary endpoint that arimoclomol almost achieved. To satisfy the FDA, the company will most likely have to run a new pivotal study.</p>\n<p>Some shareholders remain hopeful that the European Medicines Agency will be less strict than the FDA. While the FDA's European colleague has been more lenient regarding treatments for rare diseases in the past, arimoclomol probably isn't moving forward until it produces some convincing clinical-trial results.</p>\n<p>Despite lacking a clear path forward, the Denmark-headquartered company still boasts a fairly large market cap in excess of $500 million at recent prices. Just one of the sequenced cases was due to the original SARS-CoV-2 virus first identified in Wuhan, China. The rest came from a range of variants, including 21% of cases attributable to a new variant called lambda that was first identified in Peru.</p>\n<p>TheWorld Health Organization&nbsp;added lambda to its&nbsp;watchlist&nbsp;as a variant of interest on Monday.</p>\n<p>Some 57% of the Covid cases in the study were due to so-called variants of concern, the four variants that the World Health Organization has deemed the most worrying. Most of these -- about 41% of all the cases -- were due to the alpha variant first observed in the U.K., CureVac said.</p>\n<p>That variant is now the most common in the U.S., and other vaccines, including shots from&nbsp;Pfizer Inc.&nbsp;and&nbsp;BioNTech SE&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;Novavax Inc., have shown themselves effective against it. There could be some volatility around these events, but eventually, it looks like technology is ready for the next leg higher. It could begin in early July as the market starts to anticipate the next round of earnings reports.</p> \n<p>Regarding the upcoming Fed meeting, it seems like market participants have had the same fears before every recent meeting. They are worried the Fed will hint at “tapering” or slowing down their monthly bond purchases, and eventually map out a course for raising interest rates. Fed Chair Powell has made it perfectly clear that he will take his time with this process, and I don’t see anything being done until early 2022. Many people might disagree with the Fed’s actions because several economic measures are back to pre-pandemic levels; however, the Fed would rather be late in normalizing rates than early. Don’t argue with it — take advantage of this equity friendly environment.</p> \n<p>If there’s an unforeseen event that causes the market to stall over the next few months, it’s possible the next leg higher could be delayed until the fourth quarter. Either way, I wouldn’t see any sustained downside because there’s so much liquidity in the markets, and sentiment gets very negative very quickly on any minor decline. For example, during the Nasdaq Composite’s -5% drop in early May, equity put buying spiked to levels not seen since late October, right before the last presidential election. From a contrarian point of view, this constant one-foot-out-the-door mentality helps to keep a floor to the market when overall fear rises.</p> \n<p>Whether the next move higher starts in July or later this year, these three historical precedents show that we are likely to come out of the recent correction in technology with a new, sustained uptrend. Either way, I wouldn’t see any sustained downside because there’s so much liquidity in the markets, and sentiment gets very negative very quickly on any minor decline. For example, during the Nasdaq Composite’s -5% drop in early May, equity put buying spiked to levels not seen since late October, right before the last presidential election. CureVac declined to say how many who got the shot got sick or how many received a placebo. But the results suggest the vaccine works less well for older people than in a younger population, Chief Technology Officer Mariola Fotin-Mleczek said in an interview Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Though preliminary, the results throw the future of the vaccine into question as wealthy nations around the world move swiftly to inoculate their populations with shots already available. Still, CureVac will finish its trial and plans to gain approval, Chief Executive Officer Franz-Werner Haas said.</p>\n<p>“There is a huge need for vaccine, and I think we can still make a contribution,” Haas said.</p>\n<p>The company’s shares fell more than 49% in post-market trading after being up 17% this year through Wednesday’s close.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d6ec3f2e05cfbc6c7d87c3fa174f459c\" tg-width=\"1302\" tg-height=\"663\"></p>\n<p>In April, Elon Musk tweeted about CureVac, which&nbsp;Tesla Inc.&nbsp;has&nbsp;partnered with&nbsp;on a vaccine printer,saying&nbsp;it “sounds like they’re a few months away from regulatory approval.” He added that “a tidal wave of vaccine is coming this summer.” He later deleted the tweet.</p>\n<p>The shot could be a boost in the developing world, since it doesn’t require the deep freezing needed for other Covid shots. Partly owned by the German government, CureVac has forged partnerships with&nbsp;Bayer AG,GlaxoSmithKline Plc&nbsp;and the&nbsp;U.K. government&nbsp;aimed at speeding production of its shot and future versions that will target mutated strains.</p>\n<p>The data comes as the world is at something of a crossroads in the Covid fight, with global infections falling even as outbreaks in places with less access to vaccines serve as a reminder that the pandemic is far from over. The wealthiest countries have taken an outsize share of the&nbsp;more than 2.4 billion shots&nbsp;administered so far.</p>\n<p>The proliferation of variants in the CureVac trial is testimony to how the pandemic has changed since the first large vaccine clinical trials were run last year.</p>\n<p><b>Genetic Sequencing</b></p>\n<p>CureVac’s researchers genetically sequenced 124 of the 134 cases they included in their analysis. Just one of the sequenced cases was due to the original SARS-CoV-2 virus first identified in Wuhan, China. The rest came from a range of variants, including 21% of cases attributable to a new variant called lambda that was first identified in Peru.</p>\n<p>TheWorld Health Organization&nbsp;added lambda to its&nbsp;watchlist&nbsp;as a variant of interest on Monday.</p>\n<p>Some 57% of the Covid cases in the study were due to so-called variants of concern, the four variants that the World Health Organization has deemed the most worrying. Most of these -- about 41% of all the cases -- were due to the alpha variant first observed in the U.K., CureVac said.</p>\n<p>That variant is now the most common in the U.S., and other vaccines, including shots from&nbsp;Pfizer Inc.&nbsp;and&nbsp;BioNTech SE&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;Novavax Inc., have shown themselves effective against it. CureVac didn’t release detailed data about how its shot performed against each of the variants.</p>\n<p><b>Final Readout</b></p>\n<p>More details will emerge in the final readout of the study, which will include more than 200 Covid cases and could come within two or three weeks, CureVac said.</p>\n<p>Like the shots from&nbsp;Moderna Inc.&nbsp;and the Pfizer-BioNtech alliance, CureVac’s vaccine relies on mRNA, enlisting the body’s own cells as vaccine factories. They are worried the Fed will hint at “tapering” or slowing down their monthly bond purchases, and eventually map out a course for raising interest rates. Fed Chair Powell has made it perfectly clear that he will take his time with this process, and I don’t see anything being done until early 2022. Many people might disagree with the Fed’s actions because several economic measures are back to pre-pandemic levels; however, the Fed would rather be late in normalizing rates than early. Don’t argue with it — take advantage of this equity friendly environment.</p> \n<p>If there’s an unforeseen event that causes the market to stall over the next few months, it’s possible the next leg higher could be delayed until the fourth quarter. Either way, I wouldn’t see any sustained downside because there’s so much liquidity in the markets, and sentiment gets very negative very quickly on any minor decline. For example, during the Nasdaq Composite’s -5% drop in early May, equity put buying spiked to levels not seen since late October, right before the last presidential election. From a contrarian point of view, this constant one-foot-out-the-door mentality helps to keep a floor to the market when overall fear rises.</p> \n<p>Whether the next move higher starts in July or later this year, these three historical precedents show that we are likely to come out of the recent correction in technology with a new, sustained uptrend. Clean energy stocks are down roughly 20% this year on an absolute basis, while energy, commodities, defense and tobacco stocks have all outperformed. This sharp contrast comes despite flows into ESG funds continuing at a record pace.\nRising prices will likely continue to pose a significant challenge for ESG funds in particular, Bernstein said, but added that there are a number of ways for these investors to lower their risk exposure.\nIn a note published June 10, Bernstein screened for ESG stocks in the U.S., Europe and Asia that are best positioned for rising inflation.\nBernstein screened for the stocks by considering three ways that sustainable investors could brace for a rising inflationary environment:\n1. Seeking out high-scoring ESG stocks that are positively exposed to rising bond yields.\n2. Investing in high-scoring ESG stocks which have robust pricing power.\n3. Identifying companies that have increased exposure to the energy, commodities and financials sectors.\nIn considering stocks that should be in an ESG portfolio, Bernstein recognized that investors may struggle to prioritize so-called “sin” stocks, such as energy and commodity companies, although these “value” stocks usually perform well when inflation and bond yields rise. Value stocks are seen as being underappreciated by the market.\nBernstein also highlighted that financials tend to be left on the sidelines by ESG investors, since measuring their environmental credentials can be tricky.\nU.S.\nThe analysts said that U.S. ESG funds are “not that well positioned” for inflation because they tend to be underweight on so-called value stocks. The bank did, however, single outState Street,LearandBank of New York Mellonamong its top picks of those positively exposed to rising bond yields. The three U.S. firms were found to score in the top quintile on “environment,” according to data from Sustainalytics, and had a positive correlation with U.S. 10-year bond yields over the past 12 months.\nHome Depot,Adobe,PepsiCo were named by Bernstein as being among the stocks with the highest pricing power and ESG scores.\nEurope\nESG funds in Europe were found to be particularly exposed to rising inflation and the bank said tighter constraints and regulations on sustainability made lowering inflation risk more difficult than in other regions.\nNonetheless,ING,EniandTotalEnergieswere picked out among the region’s high-scoring ESG stocks within industries that are positively exposed to rising bond yields.Neste,Norsk HydroandKingfisherwere all cited as top picks when it comes to strong pricing power and high ESG scores, the analysts at Bernstein said.\nAsia\nAsian ESG funds are better positioned than their counterparts in the U.S. and Europe, the bank said.
