None of us like to accept that our investment portfolios could be subject to such cruel twists of fate.</p>\n<p>One way in which some are finding meaning in lumber’s decline is via a market-timing indicator based on the ratio of lumber&nbsp;to gold.One&nbsp;study&nbsp;found that when the ratio is higher than where it was 13 weeks previously, conditions should be favorable for U.S. stocks. When it’s lower, U.S. Treasury bonds are preferred.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, given lumber’s recent plunge, this ratio’s current message is bearish for stocks. (See chart below.) To help determine how much weight to place on that message, I tested the ratio back to 1984 — which is how far back data extend on FactSet. For each week since then, I calculated whether the ratio was higher or lower than where it was 13 weeks previously.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c3b4a71a21eea91205bffc083189f6a1\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"849\"></p>\n<p>The table below reports the frequency of a rising market as a function of whether the lumber-gold ratio’s 13-week change was positive or negative. I used the Wilshire 5000’s Total Return Index as the market benchmark.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b87c08d2f35d4035d6679a53b43dad2d\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"377\"></p>\n<p>Notice that the lumber-gold ratio makes little to no difference to the frequency of a higher stock market. This suggests that the recent downturn in the lumber-gold ratio may not be as alarming as it otherwise might appear.</p>\n<p>Of course, it’s possible that even though a decline isn’t more likely when the ratio’s 13-week change is negative, the declines that do take place are more severe. The table below reports the relevant data, which tell a similar story as the table above.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8a25f2a5327104a15712a37d05c39479\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"265\"></p>\n<p>To be sure, this discussion is not an exhaustive analysis of the lumber-gold ratio’s potential value. There may be other ways of slicing and dicing the data that uncover ways in which it can be of use to investors. Nevertheless, the data would seem to suggest that the recent downturn in the lumber-gold ratio is not in and of itself a huge cause for alarm.</p>\n<p>None of these results guarantees that the stock market won’t experience a correction in coming weeks, or even begin a bear market. It very much could, at any time, given&nbsp;how overvalued the stock market is. My point is that, as far as I can see, the declining lumber-gold ratio is not an additional reason for predicting such a downturn.</p>\n<p><b>Gold-platinum ratio</b></p>\n<p>In the meantime, you may want to give the stock market the benefit of the doubt. That’s because of another commodity-market-based ratio that&nbsp;a peer-reviewed academic study&nbsp;has found to have an excellent record forecasting the stock market’s 12-month return. This other ratio is the price of gold divided by the price of platinum.</p>\n<p>I most&nbsp;recently wrote about this ratio in February. Though the ratio is a lot lower today than the multiyear high it set at the bottom of last March’s waterfall decline, it still is above its long-term average. What’s more, research firm NPD Crest expects the latter category’s sales to climb nearly 10% 10% by the end of 20-23. So Oatly is effectively positioned in a strong subcategory within a rapidly growing category.</p>\n<p>Since I’m allergic to cow’s milk, I often go to the plant-based milk section in grocery stores. In the last year, I’ve noticed that the shelf space devoted to oat milk has increased tremendously. I estimate that oat milk now gets about 50% of the shelf space of the plant-based milk sections, versus 30% for almond milk and 20% for soy milk. (For the record, I’m a soy milk fan).</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the company’s CEO, Toni Petersson, has&nbsp;stated that making oat&nbsp;milk generates “80% less greenhouse-gas emissions than traditional dairy-milk production does,”<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;reported.&nbsp; Also making oat milk appealing to environmentally conscious people is the fact that producing it requires much less water than making almond milk.</p>\n<p><b>Profitability Concerns Are Overdone, but Valuation Worries Are Warranted</b></p>\n<p>Some analysts have dismissed OTLY stock because of the company’s lack of profitability.&nbsp; But with Oatly’s sales and gross profit both soaring (its gross profit nearly doubled to&nbsp; almost $130 million last year), I think that profitability is a matter of when, not if, for the company. Although higher-than-expected commodity inflation could delay Oatly’s move into the black,&nbsp; I nevertheless expect it to report a positive bottom line by 2023.</p>\n<p>Much more worrisome, however, is the valuation of OTLY stock. The shares are trading at 33 times the company’s sales for the 12 months that ended in March. That’s a ridiculously high valuation for a food maker that could easily encounter tremendously stepped-up competition sooner rather than later.</p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line on OTLY Stock</b></p>\n<p>The outlook of Oatly’s business is very positive, and the company looks poised to continue to grow rapidly and enter the black within a year or two. After being priced at $17 per share, the stock has jumped nearly 70% to $28.73 per share.\nHowever, some of the biggest investment firms are tepid on the stock after that strong start. A slate of initiations on Monday showed that Wall Street is split on how Oatly should be valued.\nJefferies, which was involved in Oatly’s IPO, has a buy rating and one of the highest price targets on the stock at $34 per share. Guggenheim Securities is similarly bullish at $32 per share and projected significant growth for the company.\n“The company is in the early stages of a long-term growth story that could generate double-digit annual sales growth for at least the next 10 years if it continues to invest heavily in capacity expansion,” Guggenheim said in a note to clients.\nJPMorgan, however, gave the stock a neutral rating and a $24 price target, saying that competition in the space is sure to increase and clouds the outlook for the company.\n“Oatly may have to raise more capital within a couple of years, and we view the stock as slightly overvalued (with volatility likely ahead). See full story .</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cae56c9abdfe2e326972f59f852b6c04\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"840\"><span>GETTY IMAGES</span></p>\n<p>Lumber prices have experienced one of their biggest and quickest plunges in history— with the spot futures contract dropping more than $670, or 40%, in just 25 trading sessions.</p>\n<p>It’s human nature to try to find meaning in this, since the alternative is to accept that price changes this momentous are nothing more than merely random fluctuations. None of us like to accept that our investment portfolios could be subject to such cruel twists of fate.</p>\n<p>One way in which some are finding meaning in lumber’s decline is via a market-timing indicator based on the ratio of lumber&nbsp;to gold.One&nbsp;study&nbsp;found that when the ratio is higher than where it was 13 weeks previously, conditions should be favorable for U.S. stocks. When it’s lower, U.S. Treasury bonds are preferred.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, given lumber’s recent plunge, this ratio’s current message is bearish for stocks. (See chart below.) To help determine how much weight to place on that message, I tested the ratio back to 1984 — which is how far back data extend on FactSet. For each week since then, I calculated whether the ratio was higher or lower than where it was 13 weeks previously.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c3b4a71a21eea91205bffc083189f6a1\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"849\"></p>\n<p>The table below reports the frequency of a rising market as a function of whether the lumber-gold ratio’s 13-week change was positive or negative. I used the Wilshire 5000’s Total Return Index as the market benchmark.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b87c08d2f35d4035d6679a53b43dad2d\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"377\"></p>\n<p>Notice that the lumber-gold ratio makes little to no difference to the frequency of a higher stock market. This suggests that the recent downturn in the lumber-gold ratio may not be as alarming as it otherwise might appear.</p>\n<p>Of course, it’s possible that even though a decline isn’t more likely when the ratio’s 13-week change is negative, the declines that do take place are more severe. The table below reports the relevant data, which tell a similar story as the table above.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8a25f2a5327104a15712a37d05c39479\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"265\"></p>\n<p>To be sure, this discussion is not an exhaustive analysis of the lumber-gold ratio’s potential value. There may be other ways of slicing and dicing the data that uncover ways in which it can be of use to investors. Nevertheless, the data would seem to suggest that the recent downturn in the lumber-gold ratio is not in and of itself a huge cause for alarm.</p>\n<p>None of these results guarantees that the stock market won’t experience a correction in coming weeks, or even begin a bear market. It very much could, at any time, given&nbsp;how overvalued the stock market is. My point is that, as far as I can see, the declining lumber-gold ratio is not an additional reason for predicting such a downturn.</p>\n<p><b>Gold-platinum ratio</b></p>\n<p>In the meantime, you may want to give the stock market the benefit of the doubt. That’s because of another commodity-market-based ratio that&nbsp;a peer-reviewed academic study&nbsp;has found to have an excellent record forecasting the stock market’s 12-month return. This other ratio is the price of gold divided by the price of platinum.</p>\n<p>I most&nbsp;recently wrote about this ratio in February. Though the ratio is a lot lower today than the multiyear high it set at the bottom of last March’s waterfall decline, it still is above its long-term average. See full story .\nGETTY IMAGES\nLumber prices have experienced one of their biggest and quickest plunges in history— with the spot futures contract dropping more than $670, or 40%, in just 25 trading sessions.\nIt’s human nature to try to find meaning in this, since the alternative is to accept that price changes this momentous are nothing more than merely random fluctuations. None of us like to accept that our investment portfolios could be subject to such cruel twists of fate.\nOne way in which some are finding meaning in lumber’s decline is via a market-timing indicator based on the ratio of lumber to gold.One study found that when the ratio is higher than where it was 13 weeks previously, conditions should be favorable for U.S. stocks. When it’s lower, U.S. Treasury bonds are preferred.\nNot surprisingly, given lumber’s recent plunge, this ratio’s current message is bearish for stocks. (See chart below.) To help determine how much weight to place on that message, I tested the ratio back to 1984 — which is how far back data extend on FactSet. For each week since then, I calculated whether the ratio was higher or lower than where it was 13 weeks previously.\n\nThe table below reports the frequency of a rising market as a function of whether the lumber-gold ratio’s 13-week change was positive or negative. I used the Wilshire 5000’s Total Return Index as the market benchmark.\n\nNotice that the lumber-gold ratio makes little to no difference to the frequency of a higher stock market. This suggests that the recent downturn in the lumber-gold ratio may not be as alarming as it otherwise might appear.\nOf course, it’s possible that even though a decline isn’t more likely when the ratio’s 13-week change is negative, the declines that do take place are more severe. The table below reports the relevant data, which tell a similar story as the table above.\n\nTo be sure, this discussion is not an exhaustive analysis of the lumber-gold ratio’s potential value. There may be other ways of slicing and dicing the data that uncover ways in which it can be of use to investors. Nevertheless, the data would seem to suggest that the recent downturn in the lumber-gold ratio is not in and of itself a huge cause for alarm.\nNone of these results guarantees that the stock market won’t experience a correction in coming weeks, or even begin a bear market. It very much could, at any time, given how overvalued the stock market is. My point is that, as far as I can see, the declining lumber-gold ratio is not an additional reason for predicting such a downturn.\nGold-platinum ratio\nIn the meantime, you may want to give the stock market the benefit of the doubt. That’s because of another commodity-market-based ratio that a peer-reviewed academic study has found to have an excellent record forecasting the stock market’s 12-month return. This other ratio is the price of gold divided by the price of platinum.\nI most recently wrote about this ratio in February. Though the ratio is a lot lower today than the multiyear high it set at the bottom of last March’s waterfall decline, it still is above its long-term average. After being priced at $17 per share, the stock has jumped nearly 70% to $28.73 per share.\nHowever, some of the biggest investment firms are tepid on the stock after that strong start. A slate of initiations on Monday showed that Wall Street is split on how Oatly should be valued.\nJefferies, which was involved in Oatly’s IPO, has a buy rating and one of the highest price targets on the stock at $34 per share. Guggenheim Securities is similarly bullish at $32 per share and projected significant growth for the company.\n“The company is in the early stages of a long-term growth story that could generate double-digit annual sales growth for at least the next 10 years if it continues to invest heavily in capacity expansion,” Guggenheim said in a note to clients.\nJPMorgan, however, gave the stock a neutral rating and a $24 price target, saying that competition in the space is sure to increase and clouds the outlook for the company.\n“Oatly may have to raise more capital within a couple of years, and we view the stock as slightly overvalued (with volatility likely ahead). Nonetheless, given the gigantic valuation of OTLY stock, I advise investors to wait for a major pullback in the name before buying the shares.</p>\n<p>Among the strong, positive catalysts that Oatly has are soaring sales which indicate that it has strong products and backing by well-known, powerful celebrities. Also in Oatly’s&nbsp; corner are category strength and an environmentally friendly story that’s likely to attract many young consumers.</p>\n<p><b>Rapidly Increasing Sales and Celebrity Backing</b></p>\n<p>In 2020, Oatly’s&nbsp;top line more than doubled&nbsp;year-over-year, reaching $421 million. The huge increase strongly suggests that the company is getting many repeat buyers and benefiting from very positive word-of-mouth referrals among consumers. And those developments, in turn, suggest that the company’s products (it makes oat milk and other products derived from liquid oats) are very appealing to consumers.</p>\n<p>Three of the early investors in Oatly&nbsp;are American TV star Oprah Winfrey, well-known rapper Jay-Z, and “A-list” actress Natalie Portman. All of those individuals are incentivized to use their star power to help Oatly sell a huge amount of its products.</p>\n<p>Another investor in the company&nbsp; is former&nbsp;<b>Starbucks</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>SBUX</u></b>) CEO and founder Howard Schultz. Since I’m confident that Schultz still retains considerable influence over Starbucks, I’m not at all surprised that the companies&nbsp;announced a partnership&nbsp;a couple of months ago.</p>\n<p>I believe that this alliance is huge for Oatly and OTLY stock,&nbsp; as the brand’s presence in Starbucks’ stores is undoubtedly greatly increasing Oatly’s exposure to the public.</p>\n<p><b>Category Strength and a Good Green Story</b></p>\n<p>Last year,sales of oat milk came in at $252 million, and it is the most rapidly increasing type of plant-based milk,<b>Nielsen</b>&nbsp;reported, according to<i>Kerry</i>. What’s more, research firm NPD Crest expects the latter category’s sales to climb nearly 10% 10% by the end of 20-23. So Oatly is effectively positioned in a strong subcategory within a rapidly growing category.</p>\n<p>Since I’m allergic to cow’s milk, I often go to the plant-based milk section in grocery stores. In the last year, I’ve noticed that the shelf space devoted to oat milk has increased tremendously. I estimate that oat milk now gets about 50% of the shelf space of the plant-based milk sections, versus 30% for almond milk and 20% for soy milk. (For the record, I’m a soy milk fan).</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the company’s CEO, Toni Petersson, has&nbsp;stated that making oat&nbsp;milk generates “80% less greenhouse-gas emissions than traditional dairy-milk production does,”<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;reported.&nbsp; Also making oat milk appealing to environmentally conscious people is the fact that producing it requires much less water than making almond milk.</p>\n<p><b>Profitability Concerns Are Overdone, but Valuation Worries Are Warranted</b></p>\n<p>Some analysts have dismissed OTLY stock because of the company’s lack of profitability.&nbsp; But with Oatly’s sales and gross profit both soaring (its gross profit nearly doubled to&nbsp; almost $130 million last year), I think that profitability is a matter of when, not if, for the company. Although higher-than-expected commodity inflation could delay Oatly’s move into the black,&nbsp; I nevertheless expect it to report a positive bottom line by 2023.</p>\n<p>Much more worrisome, however, is the valuation of OTLY stock. The shares are trading at 33 times the company’s sales for the 12 months that ended in March. That’s a ridiculously high valuation for a food maker that could easily encounter tremendously stepped-up competition sooner rather than later.</p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line on OTLY Stock</b></p>\n<p>The outlook of Oatly’s business is very positive, and the company looks poised to continue to grow rapidly and enter the black within a year or two. Nonetheless, given the gigantic valuation of OTLY stock, I advise investors to wait for a major pullback in the name before buying the shares.\nAmong the strong, positive catalysts that Oatly has are soaring sales which indicate that it has strong products and backing by well-known, powerful celebrities. Also in Oatly’s  corner are category strength and an environmentally friendly story that’s likely to attract many young consumers.\nRapidly Increasing Sales and Celebrity Backing\nIn 2020, Oatly’s top line more than doubled year-over-year, reaching $421 million. The huge increase strongly suggests that the company is getting many repeat buyers and benefiting from very positive word-of-mouth referrals among consumers. And those developments, in turn, suggest that the company’s products (it makes oat milk and other products derived from liquid oats) are very appealing to consumers.\nThree of the early investors in Oatly are American TV star Oprah Winfrey, well-known rapper Jay-Z, and “A-list” actress Natalie Portman. All of those individuals are incentivized to use their star power to help Oatly sell a huge amount of its products.\nAnother investor in the company  is former Starbucks(NASDAQ:SBUX) CEO and founder Howard Schultz. Since I’m confident that Schultz still retains considerable influence over Starbucks, I’m not at all surprised that the companies announced a partnership a couple of months ago.\nI believe that this alliance is huge for Oatly and OTLY stock,  as the brand’s presence in Starbucks’ stores is undoubtedly greatly increasing Oatly’s exposure to the public.\nCategory Strength and a Good Green Story\nLast year,sales of oat milk came in at $252 million, and it is the most rapidly increasing type of plant-based milk,Nielsen reported, according toKerry. What’s more, research firm NPD Crest expects the latter category’s sales to climb nearly 10% 10% by the end of 20-23. So Oatly is effectively positioned in a strong subcategory within a rapidly growing category.\nSince I’m allergic to cow’s milk, I often go to the plant-based milk section in grocery stores. In the last year, I’ve noticed that the shelf space devoted to oat milk has increased tremendously. I estimate that oat milk now gets about 50% of the shelf space of the plant-based milk sections, versus 30% for almond milk and 20% for soy milk. (For the record, I’m a soy milk fan).\nMeanwhile, the company’s CEO, Toni Petersson, has stated that making oat milk generates “80% less greenhouse-gas emissions than traditional dairy-milk production does,”Seeking Alpha reported.  Also making oat milk appealing to environmentally conscious people is the fact that producing it requires much less water than making almond milk.\nProfitability Concerns Are Overdone, but Valuation Worries Are Warranted\nSome analysts have dismissed OTLY stock because of the company’s lack of profitability.  But with Oatly’s sales and gross profit both soaring (its gross profit nearly doubled to  almost $130 million last year), I think that profitability is a matter of when, not if, for the company. Although higher-than-expected commodity inflation could delay Oatly’s move into the black,  I nevertheless expect it to report a positive bottom line by 2023.\nMuch more worrisome, however, is the valuation of OTLY stock. The shares are trading at 33 times the company’s sales for the 12 months that ended in March. That’s a ridiculously high valuation for a food maker that could easily encounter tremendously stepped-up competition sooner rather than later.\nThe Bottom Line on OTLY Stock\nThe outlook of Oatly’s business is very positive, and the company looks poised to continue to grow rapidly and enter the black within a year or two.
