Some market participants believe it’s still too soon for the central bank to signal such a tapering action, while others think the Fed will be able to find a happy medium that won’t upset the markets.\nEach scenario has different investing implications as they are expected to make big moves across asset classes.\nHere’s a playbook for traders on every scenario from the central bank’s key meeting.\nIf the Fed signals it’s staying with easy policies\nThe Fed could reiterate its transitory stance on inflation, ignoring the pick-up in price pressures reflected in recent economic data. If the central bank says its not time to remove accommodative policies and it’s not concerned about inflation, investors should stick with hedges against rising prices like commodities and stocks with high pricing power, investment banks found.\nBank of America screened S&P 500 companies that its analysts believe have the most pricing power and ability to expand margins at times of rising prices. The stocks include a few chipmakers —Nvidia,Texas InstrumentsandBroadcom— as well as consumer plays likeHome Depot,NikeandPepsiCo.Energy dividend payerExxon Mobilis also on the list.\nUBS also developed a framework for scoring corporate pricing agility, which considers pricing power, margin momentum and input cost exposure. For pricing power, UBS quantified the extent to which a company can raise prices over and above costs. For margin momentum, UBS tracked corporate pricing trends using its proprietary pricing mapping.\nFor input cost exposure, UBS searched for companies with negative sentiment around commodity and transport costs on earnings calls.\n\nBillionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones said earlier this week that investors should “go all in on the inflation trades” if the Fed keeps ignoring higher prices.\n“If they treat these numbers — which were material events, they were very material —if they treat them with nonchalance, I think it’s just a green light to bet heavily on every inflation trade,” Tudor Jones said on “Squawk Box”on Monday.\n“If they say, ‘We’re on path, things are good,’ then I would just go all in on the inflation trades. This outcome would help the S&P 500 extend last week’s breakout.”\nInvestors have been rotating back to tech as of late with bond yields coming down. The tech-heavyNasdaq Compositehas rallied about 2.5% this month, hitting a record close on Monday, its first all-time high since April 26. Amazon challenged the ballots at a rate of nearly 4-1, the union added.\nAmazon said it contested roughly 300 ballots, while roughly 200 ballots were challenged by the union. The company said most of the contested ballots were due to issues of eligibility, wherein ballots may have been submitted by individuals who left the company during the voting period. Houchois rates GM stock Hold and Ford stock Buy.</p><p>He recognizes some near term challenges such as the global automotive-chip shortage, but also sees lower investment and working capital for the industry in the future. “We also keep in mind the EV transition is a marathon, still without obvious winners and, in our view no winner-take-all.” He sees space for legacy auto makers in an all electric future.</p><p>The target-price bumps, however, aren’t helping either legacy auto-maker stock though. Both Ford and GM shares are down about 1% in Monday trading.</p><p>Ford and GM stocks are still up more than 30% year to date. Tesla stock is down on the year and Monday’s loss for adds to recent investor pain. Shares are down almost 33% from its 52-week high. It’s tough to pin the drop on one issue. Several factors appears to be roiling the EV space right now.</p><p>Friday, there was anannouncementbyNIO(NIO) that first-quarter sales and production would fall short of management’s original guidance, sending its U.S. listed ADRs down 4.8%. NIO cited the global automotive semiconductor shortage. The chip shortage has impacted everyone. GM and Ford have both called the issue abillion-dollar headwindto 2021 profits.</p><p>Rising interest rates have been a problem, too.Higher ratesimpact high-growth companies two main ways. They make it more expensive to finance growth. Second, high-growth companies generate most of their free cash flow far in the future. That future cash, and potential dividends, are worth less, relatively speaking, when investors can earn higher yields on their capital today.</p><p>Tesla is a high-growth stock. Analysts expect sales to grow about 55% year over year in 2021.</p><p>The next catalyst for Tesla stock might be first-quarter deliveries. There is no fixed date for a delivery update, but typically it comes out in the first few days of a new quarter. The Monday dip and analyst flip is leaving bullish Tesla investors wondering what is up.Jefferies analystPhilippe Houchoiscut his Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock-price target to $700 from $775. “Volatility, Bitcoin, and tweets brought noise but little fundamental change since we downgraded Tesla,” wrote the analyst in a Sunday report. There is much potential ahead, according to Houchois. That’s the good news. But Tesla is “no longer unique as an EV play with preferred access to capital.” The path forward is a little harder than before.Houchois wasBuy-ratedon Tesla stock up untilDecember, when he downgraded it to Hold with a $650 target price; shares were trading at roughly $550 at the time. It rose to $775 before getting cut Monday.Tesla stock is down 2.1% in midday trading. TheS&P 500andDow Jones Industrial Averageare both down about 0.2%.In addition to the Tesla price cut, Houchois feels better about the legacy auto makers. He took his price target up on every single one he covers, includingFord Motor(F) andGeneral Motors(GM). His target price for Ford stock goes to $16 from $14. His target for GM stock goes to $62 from $50. Houchois rates GM stock Hold and Ford stock Buy.He recognizes some near term challenges such as the global automotive-chip shortage, but also sees lower investment and working capital for the industry in the future. “We also keep in mind the EV transition is a marathon, still without obvious winners and, in our view no winner-take-all.” He sees space for legacy auto makers in an all electric future.The target-price bumps, however, aren’t helping either legacy auto-maker stock though. Both Ford and GM shares are down about 1% in Monday trading.Ford and GM stocks are still up more than 30% year to date. Tesla stock is down on the year and Monday’s loss for adds to recent investor pain. Shares are down almost 33% from its 52-week high. It’s tough to pin the drop on one issue. Several factors appears to be roiling the EV space right now.Friday, there was anannouncementbyNIO(NIO) that first-quarter sales and production would fall short of management’s original guidance, sending its U.S. listed ADRs down 4.8%. NIO cited the global automotive semiconductor shortage. The chip shortage has impacted everyone. GM and Ford have both called the issue abillion-dollar headwindto 2021 profits.Rising interest rates have been a problem, too.Higher ratesimpact high-growth companies two main ways. They make it more expensive to finance growth. Second, high-growth companies generate most of their free cash flow far in the future. That future cash, and potential dividends, are worth less, relatively speaking, when investors can earn higher yields on their capital today.Tesla is a high-growth stock. Analysts expect sales to grow about 55% year over year in 2021.The next catalyst for Tesla stock might be first-quarter deliveries. There is no fixed date for a delivery update, but typically it comes out in the first few days of a new quarter. But Paulsen believes it’s more likely the group will endure through higher rates.\n“It might have less to do with yields than it does with just facing a glass ceiling,” he added. “I’mnot totally convinced that we’re breaking down. We might just be hitting the ceiling, bouncing down for a minute and maybe going to take it out yet at some point here in the future.”\nPaulsen contends Big Tech and growth, which he classifies as “New-Era” stocks, will retain their attractiveness to investors.\n“If it does ultimately achieve a new relative-price high, might its leadership persevere and perhaps even strengthen? That is what happened the last two times the Nasdaq spent multiple years as an underperformer,” he wrote.\nDespite his optimism, Paulsen acknowledges it’s reasonable to expect a phase of underperformance, consolidation or even a temporary meltdown.\n“It’s important to realize that we’re just one year into this new economic expansion — probably both the expansion and the bull market are going to be a multi-year event in which tech will continue to play a fairly dominant role,” he said. “During the periods of time where cyclicality takes a hit and it’s going to in periods, I think tech is going to hold up your portfolio.”\nSo, Paulsen, who oversees about $1 billion in assets under management, isn’t bailing on Big Tech.\n“We’re underweighted tech, but not by a lot,” said Paulsen, who is overweight areas such as small caps, value and international stocks. “It’s likely to underperform over the next year as the economy really booms here, but I’m not totally sold that it will.”\nOn “Trading Nation” last September,Paulsen,a long-time market bull, recommended taking advantage of Wall Street pessimism while you still can. They make it more expensive to finance growth. Second, high-growth companies generate most of their free cash flow far in the future. That future cash, and potential dividends, are worth less, relatively speaking, when investors can earn higher yields on their capital today.</p><p>Tesla is a high-growth stock. Analysts expect sales to grow about 55% year over year in 2021.</p><p>The next catalyst for Tesla stock might be first-quarter deliveries. There is no fixed date for a delivery update, but typically it comes out in the first few days of a new quarter. Amazon challenged the ballots at a rate of nearly 4-1, the union added.\nAmazon said it contested roughly 300 ballots, while roughly 200 ballots were challenged by the union. The company said most of the contested ballots were due to issues of eligibility, wherein ballots may have been submitted by individuals who left the company during the voting period. The NLRB told CNBC that it will not release the total number of challenged ballots until after the counting is over.\nNews of the number of contested ballots was first reported by Reuters.\nThe ballots could play a big role if the union can claw back enough votes to where the challenged ballots would sway the outcome of the election. The NLRB would then begin a legal process to determine whether to count the challenged ballots, which could take many days or weeks.\nThe RWDSU is fighting to represent approximately 5,800 workers at Amazon’s Bessemer, Alabama, warehouse, known as BHM1. The union election has shaped up to be one of the most important organizing campaigns in recent history. Labor groups have been closely watching the campaign with the hope that it will kickstart organizing efforts across the country amid a yearslong decline in private-sector union membership.\nNo matter what the outcome is, the losing side is expected to challenge the election results. RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum on Thursday signaled the union is already poised to take that step.
