But because of the company's current challenges with its cybersecurity portfolio, that opportunity may not translate into profits for investors.
\n
A vast addressable market
\n
Following its transition to a software-based security business initiated several years ago, BlackBerry announced a partnership with Amazon's Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create IVY, a software platform to securely exchange and manage standardized vehicle data. That platform, which should hit the market by February 2022, should provide automotive industry players with new opportunities, such as reducing costs and monetizing new services.
\n
The success of such initiatives remains to be seen. But those developments expose BlackBerry to a vast total addressable market that management estimated at $89 billion by 2025, which corresponds to an attractive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19%.
\n
\n
Challenges in cybersecurity
\n
However, BlackBerry remains far from reaching that growth trajectory. During its first fiscal quarter, which ended on May 31, revenue declined 15.5% year over year to $174 million.
\n
The ongoing negotiation to sell an important part of the company's patent portfolio had a negative effect on revenue. But more worryingly, revenue from the cybersecurity segment declined by 10.1% year over year to $107 million, which seems weak considering the secular growth in that market, boosted by the recent rise of ransomware attacks.
\n
In contrast, given that favorable context, the endpoint protection specialist CrowdStrike generated another quarter of impressive revenue growth (70% year over year to $302.8 million) during its latest quarter, despite its much larger scale.
\n
In particular, BlackBerry's endpoint protection cybersecurity offering Cylance hasn't caught up yet with the competition. As an illustration, the research specialist Gartner positioned Cylance far away from many competitors in its May 2021 endpoint protection platforms magic quadrant in terms of ability to execute and completeness of vision.
\n
Granted, BlackBerry enhanced its cybersecurity offerings last quarter with additional cloud-based capabilities to protect remote workers. But competitors, such as CrowdStrike, have already been proposing similar features for several quarters, or even years.
\n
Internet of Things
\n
In contrast, BlackBerry's Internet of Things (IoT) segment showed encouraging signs of recovery. That segment mainly includes QNX, the company's embedded operating system that can be integrated into any kind of device.
\n
So during the first fiscal quarter, revenue from IoT increased by 48.3% year over year to $43 million, partly thanks to the deployment of QNX in vehicles. Indeed, the research outfit Strategy Analytics estimated QNX software is now embedded in more than 195 million vehicles, compared to 175 million the year before.
\n
That's an encouraging development for BlackBerry over the long term, as it plans to leverage its footprint in the automotive industry to grow the adoption of its IVY platform. In addition, after having announced its IVY Innovation Fund several months ago to drive innovation, it launched its IVY Advisory Council during the last quarter to develop use cases.
\n
Growth priced in
\n
Despite the drop following these mixed fiscal first-quarter results, BlackBerry's stock is still up more than 80% since the beginning of the year. The company's market cap, now at $6.8 billion, corresponds to 7.9 times trailing 12-month revenue of $861 million, which indicates the market is pricing in strong growth going forward.
\n
So with cybersecurity representing 61.5% of revenue during the last quarter, the company must significantly improve its security business to match the market's expectations, which won't be easy given the crowded and strong competition in that area.
\n
In addition, the success of the company's IoT business will partly depend on its cybersecurity portfolio. Indeed, BlackBerry will leverage its cybersecurity infrastructure and software to protect connected vehicles as well, as they remain exposed to similar threats as traditional computing devices, such as computers and laptops.
\n
Thus, before considering investing in BlackBerry for the attractive potential of its IVY platform over the long term, I'll stay on the sidelines and wait for tangible improvements in the company's cybersecurity segment.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Here's Why I'm Waiting to Buy BlackBerry Stock
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHere's Why I'm Waiting to Buy BlackBerry Stock\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-28 23:42 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Last year, BlackBerry (NYSE:BB) announced an ambitious goal of creating a software platform for the vast automotive market. Indeed, BlackBerry will leverage its cybersecurity infrastructure and software to protect connected vehicles as well, as they remain exposed to similar threats as traditional computing devices, such as computers and laptops.\nThus, before considering investing in BlackBerry for the attractive potential of its IVY platform over the long term, I'll stay on the sidelines and wait for tangible improvements in the company's cybersecurity segment.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"BB":0.9,"BBRY":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":903,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":150196510,"gmtCreate":1624889030130,"gmtModify":1631889186968,"author":{"id":"3578747684427488","authorId":"3578747684427488","name":"Merbok","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578747684427488","idStr":"3578747684427488"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$Follow me for profitable signals","listText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$Follow me for profitable signals","text":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$Follow me for profitable signals","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/361faa2fcacf145f9ea8d09c8e5686fb","width":"1125","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/150196510","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":871,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":125330578,"gmtCreate":1624649146094,"gmtModify":1631889186971,"author":{"id":"3578747684427488","authorId":"3578747684427488","name":"Merbok","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578747684427488","idStr":"3578747684427488"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$Follow me for signals. they make things there. If it’s good for Nike, good for Starbucks, it’s going to be good for Apple,” Cramer said on“Squawk Box.”\nWhile Nike’s sales in Greater China were up just 17% in its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended May 31, CFO Matt Friend said on the conference call that the company saw improvements in May and June after a weaker April.\nFriend also mentioned Nike’s 40-year history in the region and said, “We continue to invest in serving consumers with the best products Nike has to offer in locally relevant ways.”\nIn late March, Nike began to experience backlash in China for a statement regarding forced labor allegations in the western region of Xinjiang. Citi in Aprildowngraded Nike’s stock to neutral from buy, citing China concerns as a key reason.\nCramer had previously expressed concerns about geopolitics potentially weighing on Nike. Last week, for example, hesaid of Nike: “Great story, but not if China stays as important as it’s been.”\nShares of Nike were soaring Friday, rising by more than 13% to touch a new intraday all-time high.\nCramer said Johnson also relieved some of his near-term investment concerns surrounding China risk after he interviewed the Starbucks boss on “Mad Money.”\n“We have built Starbucks in China, for China,” Johnson told Cramer on Thursday, while also emphasizing the coffee chain’s intentions to lead “by example of how we can take care of all stakeholders.”\nReflecting on that interview and Nike’s call on“Squawk on the Street”on Friday, Cramer said: “I think that what happened last night with Nike and with Starbucks was incredible.”\nCramer said what he took away is “there is no rift between the People’s Republic of China government and American companies that build plants there, which means to me one of the big worries about Tesla — whether China would embrace it — [is] off the table.”\n“If I were an Apple analyst, I would say, you know what, I have much greater conviction that Apple is going to have good numbers because they build there,” Cramer added.\nThe U.S. is Apple’s biggest country for revenue, but mainland China is second, according to FactSet estimates.\nCramer said he also feels better now aboutSkyworks Solutions, which makes semiconductor components. “Skyworks builds there; I would buy Skyworks,” he said.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AAPL":0.9,"NKE":0.9,"SBUX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":251,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":125964376,"gmtCreate":1624641956195,"gmtModify":1631889186984,"author":{"id":"3578747684427488","authorId":"3578747684427488","name":"Merbok","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578747684427488","idStr":"3578747684427488"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$1/5 of my AUM returned.Long and hold please, if you see this. For now, the coalition around Powell’s position appears to have the upper hand.
\n
Powell told lawmakers on Tuesday that “a pretty substantial part or perhaps all of the overshoot in inflation comes from categories that are directly affected by the reopening of the economy,” and should therefore be expected to dissipate over the course of the year.
\n
That was echoed by another member of the central bank’s leadership team: New York Fed President John Williams, who said on Thursday that he anticipates inflation will head back toward their 2% target next year.
\n
Others, like St. Louis Fed President James Bullard -- and his counterparts in Atlanta and Dallas, Raphael Bostic and Robert Kaplan -- all cited the risk of persistent higher inflation in public appearances this week, arguing it would probably be appropriate to begin raising their benchmark rate from its current near-zero level some time in 2022.
\n
“The differences in terms of the outlook for monetary policy really depend on and reflect the differences in the outlook for inflation,” said Gregory Daco, head of U.S. macroeconomics at Oxford Economics in New York.
\n
“Those who believe that there will be a sticky environment in terms of inflation -- and that what we’re seeing today is a sign of an environment in which inflation is going to remain much higher if policy remains as dovish as it is -- want to see a much tighter stance,” Daco said.
\n
Data released Friday showed the Fed’s preferred gauge of inflation rose 0.4% in May from the prior month and 3.9% over the past year. Previous reports on consumer prices for the months of April and May showed the highest monthly increases since 2009.
\n
On June 16, at the conclusion of its latest two-day policy meeting, the Federal Open Market Committee startled investors when it published updated quarterly projections showing 13 of 18 officials saw a likely need for higher rates by the end of 2023, with seven of them seeing a need to begin raising rates as soon as next year.
\n
That marked a notable shift from the last time projections were updated in March, when 11 of 18 officials expected there would be no need for rate increases before 2024, and only four thought tightening would be needed in 2022.
\n
Several top Fed officials, like Vice Chair Richard Clarida and Governor Lael Brainard, haven’t spoken publicly since the meeting.
\n
Others -- like Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester, Boston’s Eric Rosengren, San Francisco’s Mary Daly and Richmond’s Thomas Barkin -- offered sanguine comments on the inflation outlook in public remarks this week but declined to reveal their interest-rate projections.
\n
Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, who has long been the FOMC’s most outspoken dove, told Reuters in a June 18 interview that he penciled in no rate increases through the end of 2023.
\n
Those in the 2022 camp have made it clear over in recent days that they are less confident that inflationary pressures will recede by next year. Bullard on June 18 told CNBC that he sees 2.5% inflation next year -- making his forecast the highest on the FOMC, according to the projections published on June 16.
\n

\n
“If that’s what you think is going to happen, then by the time you get to the end of 2022, you’d already have two years of 2.5-3% inflation,” Bullard said.
\n
Inflation pressures have been largely concentrated in used vehicles and categories associated with reopening of the economy, like airfares, as Americans have gotten vaccinated and begun returning to more normal, pre-pandemic lifestyles.
\n
Even so, the inflationary decade of the 1970s looms large in the minds of many central bankers, who believe the takeaway from that experience is that the public’s expectations for inflation are what determine the actual rate of price increases in an economy. For now, the coalition around Powell’s position appears to have the upper hand.\nPowell told lawmakers on Tuesday that “a pretty substantial part or perhaps all of the overshoot in inflation comes from categories that are directly affected by the reopening of the economy,” and should therefore be expected to dissipate over the course of the year.\nThat was echoed by another member of the central bank’s leadership team: New York Fed President John Williams, who said on Thursday that he anticipates inflation will head back toward their 2% target next year.\nOthers, like St. Louis Fed President James Bullard -- and his counterparts in Atlanta and Dallas, Raphael Bostic and Robert Kaplan -- all cited the risk of persistent higher inflation in public appearances this week, arguing it would probably be appropriate to begin raising their benchmark rate from its current near-zero level some time in 2022.\n“The differences in terms of the outlook for monetary policy really depend on and reflect the differences in the outlook for inflation,” said Gregory Daco, head of U.S. macroeconomics at Oxford Economics in New York.\n“Those who believe that there will be a sticky environment in terms of inflation -- and that what we’re seeing today is a sign of an environment in which inflation is going to remain much higher if policy remains as dovish as it is -- want to see a much tighter stance,” Daco said.\nData released Friday showed the Fed’s preferred gauge of inflation rose 0.4% in May from the prior month and 3.9% over the past year. Previous reports on consumer prices for the months of April and May showed the highest monthly increases since 2009.\nOn June 16, at the conclusion of its latest two-day policy meeting, the Federal Open Market Committee startled investors when it published updated quarterly projections showing 13 of 18 officials saw a likely need for higher rates by the end of 2023, with seven of them seeing a need to begin raising rates as soon as next year.\nThat marked a notable shift from the last time projections were updated in March, when 11 of 18 officials expected there would be no need for rate increases before 2024, and only four thought tightening would be needed in 2022.\nSeveral top Fed officials, like Vice Chair Richard Clarida and Governor Lael Brainard, haven’t spoken publicly since the meeting.\nOthers -- like Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester, Boston’s Eric Rosengren, San Francisco’s Mary Daly and Richmond’s Thomas Barkin -- offered sanguine comments on the inflation outlook in public remarks this week but declined to reveal their interest-rate projections.\nMinneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, who has long been the FOMC’s most outspoken dove, told Reuters in a June 18 interview that he penciled in no rate increases through the end of 2023.\nThose in the 2022 camp have made it clear over in recent days that they are less confident that inflationary pressures will recede by next year. Bullard on June 18 told CNBC that he sees 2.5% inflation next year -- making his forecast the highest on the FOMC, according to the projections published on June 16.\n\n“If that’s what you think is going to happen, then by the time you get to the end of 2022, you’d already have two years of 2.5-3% inflation,” Bullard said.\nInflation pressures have been largely concentrated in used vehicles and categories associated with reopening of the economy, like airfares, as Americans have gotten vaccinated and begun returning to more normal, pre-pandemic lifestyles.\nEven so, the inflationary decade of the 1970s looms large in the minds of many central bankers, who believe the takeaway from that experience is that the public’s expectations for inflation are what determine the actual rate of price increases in an economy. According to that view, the risk is that higher inflation now, whatever the source, could also lead to higher inflation in the future.\nFed officials possess a relatively wide range of views about what inflation will be next year -- anywhere from 1.7% to 2.5%, according to the projections. But the documents published on June 16 also showed that 13 of 18 on the FOMC saw the risks to their inflation projections as weighted to the upside, marking the highest number since the central bank began publishing that data in 2011.\nThe other five saw the risks as broadly balanced in either direction. The FOMC’s vice chair, New York’s Williams, laid out both sides of the argument while speaking Monday with reporters.\n“There are obviously upside risks to inflation,” Williams said.\n\nBut he added that there are also two downside risks which must be kept in mind as well: One is that the economic recovery could end up being slower than forecasters currently anticipate, and the other is that supply-chain bottlenecks leading to elevated vehicle prices could work themselves out more quickly than anticipated.\n“Supply and demand will adjust over time. That time might be a couple years. they make things there. “Skyworks builds there; I would buy Skyworks,” he said.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AAPL":0.9,"NKE":0.9,"SBUX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":251,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":121218103,"gmtCreate":1624465122702,"gmtModify":1631889186990,"author":{"id":"3578747684427488","authorId":"3578747684427488","name":"Merbok","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578747684427488","authorIdStr":"3578747684427488"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$PLTRNOT
