Massive discounts and trade-in offers from US carriers, in some cases amounting to a free device, are available. And the company continues to offer iPhones at a wide range of price points to appeal to more customers, with or without any groundbreaking new features or design changes this year.
\n
\"Apple has become the king of the 'good, better, best' portfolio with a phone at every relevant price point, particularly given it typically keeps older models in its line-up for those that don't want to pay four figures for the latest and greatest new devices,\" said Ben Wood, chief analyst of market research firm CCS Insight. \"Add trade-in into the mix and it makes it possible to get customers signed up for a more expensive phone than they likely planned to purchase.\"
\n
Trade-in offers
\n
For people willing to trade in their existing iPhones and commit to a wireless plan for the next few years, the discounts are jaw dropping.
\n
AT&T (T), for example, is offering up to $1,000 toward a new iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max after a trade-in, while Verizon (VZ) is touting as much as $800 off any new iPhone, essentially paying for the cost of a 128 GB iPhone 13. (WarnerMedia, the parent company of CNN, is owned by AT&T.)
\n
T-Mobile is offering the possibility of a free iPhone 13 for eligible trade-ins and says that with its Forever Upgrade program, users can get up to $800 off their next iPhone every two years, \"forever.\" If users buy from Apple directly and select T-Mobile as the carrier, they'll get a $700 credit toward a new iPhone. The deals go on and on.
\n
Trade-ins remain a central strategy for both mobile carriers and phone makers to drive replacement sales. The catch, however, is that users will need to trade in relatively new devices.
\n
Trade-in offers also typically tie customers to a long contract that can include high-priced data plans. Carriers want to keep these users loyal rather than seeing them move to a competitor network -- and a discounted or free iPhone could be the right incentive to keep them there, according to David McQueen, a director at market research firm ABI Research. For Apple, it keeps customers deep within its ecosystem of products.
\n
Prices remain the same
\n
Not only did Apple avoid raising base prices on the iPhone, but it effectively lowered the cost of certain iPhones when factoring in higher entry-level storage options.
\n
As analysts at Goldman Sachs pointed out in a research note Wednesday, the price of the 128 GB and 256 GB iPhone \"was reduced when compared to those same storage capacities last year.\"
\n
The many colors of the iPhone 13
\n
So why not raise prices this year, knowing that Apple always seems to find customers willing to pay top dollar for its devices?
\n
\"I believe Apple is aware that it has hit a sweet spot with pricing and the marginal gain of slightly increasing prices versus the negative backlash it would face is not worth it,\" Wood said.
\n
More than that, he said Apple is focused on boosting revenue from the many premium services built around the iPhone, such as iCloud storage, Apple Music and Fitness+.
\n
'Good, better, best'
\n
When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, there was one device and one entry price point for users. When Tim Cook took over as CEO, the options became more plentiful: big ones, smaller ones, mini ones, and prices that range from $399 for the iPhone SE all the way up to $1,599 for the 1 terabyte version of the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
\n
The strategic effort to appeal to as many people as possible will become one of Cook's biggest legacies. It's also one that's translated to blockbuster sales. In April, Apple reported iPhone sales were at nearly $48 billion in the first quarter of 2021, a 65% increase over the same quarter last year, as consumers upgraded to iPhone 12 devices that offered 5G for the first time.
\n
Some things haven't changed from the Jobs days, however. There may be a much wider range of options and prices for iPhones, but Apple still doesn't come close to the lower-price tiers available on Android smartphones.
\n
\"The company still focuses on profits and revenue rather than chasing volume and market share, which was the same mantra under Steve Jobs,\" McQueen said. \"Perhaps Jobs wouldn't have launched as many device types at different sizes, as he always feared cannibalizing revenue streams -- notably across iPad mini and larger screened iPhones.\"
\n
Still, the number of iPhone variations and price points has only helped it appeal to more buyers -- and it most likely will again this year, too.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Wednesday after reporting first-quarter earnings that were stronger than analysts had expected.First quarter net profit rose to $1.10 billion from $84 million a year earlier, and the company added 14.5 million net new active accounts, bringing its total user base to 392 million.

Revenue grew 31% year over year in the quarter that ended Mar. 31, according to a statement. In the year-ago quarter, the pandemic fomented a surge in online shopping, helping todrive record payment volumefor the quarter and the full year.

On the company’s earnings call, CEO Dan Schulman pointed to cryptocurrency as a key growth engine for the company.

“We’ve got a tremendous amount of really great results going on tactically with our crypto efforts,” said Schulman. He went on to say that half of crypto users open their PayPal app daily, suggesting that it increases engagement for users.

The mobile payments company made a big push into crypto in the last six months, allowing users in the U.S. to buy, sell, and check out with cryptocurrencies.

With its network of 26 million retailers, PayPal’s crypto ambitions have positioned the company as a rival to Coinbase, the country’smost popular crypto exchange.

The company also announced plans to roll out a “next-generation digital wallet” in the third quarter. But he kept the derivative contracts outstanding as an insurance policy, one of the people familiar with the matter said.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AMC":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":231,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":102486495,"gmtCreate":1620230934717,"gmtModify":1634206789062,"author":{"id":"3579141181798233","authorId":"3579141181798233","name":"Turtlebizkit","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae37619873125a6a1b1b6c86916c6c23","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579141181798233","authorIdStr":"3579141181798233"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Facepalm] Certainly feels like it...","listText":"[Facepalm] Certainly feels like it...","text":"[Facepalm] Certainly feels like it...","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/102486495","repostId":"1148686352","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1148686352","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1620224535,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1148686352?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-05-05 22:22","market":"us","language":"en","title":"This Day In Market History: Panic Of 1893 Crashes Stock Market","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1148686352","media":"benzinga","summary":"What Happened? On this day in 1893, U.S. stocks suffered their worst intraday loss in history at the ","content":"
\n
What Happened? On this day in 1893, U.S. stocks suffered their worst intraday loss in history at the time.\nWhere The Market Was:The Dow finished the day at 30.02.\nWhat Else Was Going On In The World?In...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"lsy1606299360108","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the ax murders of her father and stepmother. A fresh, one-pound beef steak cost 10 cents.\nPanic Of 1893:On May 5, 1893, the Dow Jones Index dropped more than 24% from 39.90 to 30.02. It would mark the worst intraday sell-off in U.S. history at the time, a record that would stand until 1929.\nThe Panic of 1893 was triggered in part by falling gold reserves in the U.S. Treasury. At the time, the U.S. was on the gold standard, meaning U.S. dollars could be redeemed for physical gold. When Treasury gold reserves dropped from $190 million in 1890 to $100 million by 1893, Americans grew concerned that the Treasury might run out of gold and began withdrawing bank notes and converting them to gold, placing extreme strain on the U.S. banking industry and credit markets.\nThe May 5 sell-off was triggered in part by the bankruptcy of Nation Cordage the day before.General Electric CompanyGE 0.34%shares dropped 28% on the day from $80 to $58.\nFortunately for investors, the Panic of 1893 didn’t last for long. By the end of the day, the market nearly completely recovered its losses. GE, for example, closed the session at $78.50.\nThe Panic of 1893 would ravage the U.S. economy, triggering a severe four-year depression. Roughly 14,000 U.S. businesses closed, and unemployment rose to 20%. The event would mark the worst economic downturn in U.S. history until the Great Depression began in 1929.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":221,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186235725,"gmtCreate":1623500529567,"gmtModify":1634032331533,"author":{"id":"3579141181798233","authorId":"3579141181798233","name":"Turtlebizkit","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae37619873125a6a1b1b6c86916c6c23","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579141181798233","authorIdStr":"3579141181798233"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Sweats] [Sweats] ","listText":"[Sweats] [Sweats] ","text":"[Sweats] [Sweats]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/186235725","repostId":"1124998394","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":282,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":135456881,"gmtCreate":1622178700843,"gmtModify":1634183081513,"author":{"id":"3579141181798233","authorId":"3579141181798233","name":"Turtlebizkit","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae37619873125a6a1b1b6c86916c6c23","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579141181798233","authorIdStr":"3579141181798233"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Same earth, different situations. The stock ended 2020 at $81.52, about 38% off the intraday high for the year.\nThe German vaccine maker's stock picked up momentum early in 2021, breaching the $100 psychological resistance level on Jan. 8 and trading in a $100-$120 range until early March.\nThe marketwide selloff in March did not spare BioNTech, with the stock dropping below $100 for a few sessions before climbing back again. The stock was locked in a lackluster phase until the end of March.\nCome April, the trend began to change. In the very first session of April, the stock rose over 4% and moved steadily higher through the month. In April alone, the stock added 72.4%.\nTo put things in perspective, if an investor had invested $1,000 in BioNTech shares at the end of March, their investment would now be worth $1,909.46 (using the intraday high of $207.55 hit on Monday). This would mean nearly doubling the investment in a span of a month.\nWhat's Behind The BioNTech Rally:The stock has been supported by the intermittent news flow regarding the company's vaccine.\nIn late March, the companies reported positive top-line results from a study evaluating the vaccine in adolescents.\nOn April 1, BioNTech and Pfizer reported data on BNT162b2 following six months of follow-up that confirmed its efficacy and safety.\nThe companies announced April 9 a request to the FDA to authorize expanded use of the vaccine in adolescents ages 12-15.\nThe FDA'sdecisionto temporarily pause the use ofJohnson & Johnson'sJNJ 0.2%vaccine also proved positive for BioNTech, which added about 7% on April 13 when the pause was announced.\nIn mid-April, the companies announced an agreement with the European Union to supply 100 million doses of BNT162b2, which is named Comirnaty in Europe, in 2021. With that, the total number of doses delivered to the EU is 600 million.\nLast week, a request was submitted to the EU to expand conditional marketing authorization to adolescents in the EU.\nWhat Lies Ahead For BioNTech Stock?BNT162b2 is expected to continue to boost BioNTech's top-line. Having delivered 200 million doses by the end of March, the company has signed orders for supplying 1.4 billion doses in 2021.\nPfizer and BioNTech plan to boost the manufacturing capacity for the vaccine to 2.5 billion doses by the end of 2021.\n\"BioNTech and Pfizer will be the standout leader in COVID-19 vaccination globally, with demand increasing for the 2.5Bn doses they are targeting to manufacture in 2021,\" SVB Leerink analyst Daina Graybosch said in a note.\nWith the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic now sweeping across several nations, the companies have a lucrative opportunity. The companies have also proved the efficacy of the vaccine against variants.\nOnce the pandemic phase passes, the vaccine has scope for use in endemic setting.\nMore importantly, BioNTech is not a one-trick pony. Think again. That is, at least, according to a new report from ","content":"
Think meme stock investing is a fad? Think again. That is, at least, according to a new report from financial advisory firm Betterment.
\n
About 97% of those in a recent survey conducted by the digital investment advisor, who said that they had invested in stocks driven primarily by social-media mentions rather than fundamentals would continue to do so in the foreseeable future.
\n
Such meme investing trends have been the main drivers behind purchases of companies like bricks-and-mortar videogame retailer GameStop Corp ., movie chain AMC Entertainment Holdings and BlackBerry Ltd. ,who made a ubiquitous cellphone that was all the rage in the 1990s and early 2000s.
\n
Stocks and crypto like dogecoin, that aren’t necessarily offering compelling use-cases, or earnings, are rising on the dint of the collective might of retail investors gathering on sites like Reddit and Discord. It’s a trend that has long been viewed as doomed to implode at some point, but individual investors surveyed by Betterment between late April and early May, who invested in meme stocks before say that they will continue to be investors in that category of investing.
\n
According to the Betterment survey, “there is a near-universal consensus that they will continue investing in stocks like these that get a lot of attention in the future -97% said they’re at least somewhat likely to invest,”
\n
That is even as the outlook for GameStop, AMC and its ilk look uncertain.
\n
Betterment’s survey included a panel of 1,500 respondents from April 26 to May 3, who were 18 years and older and have any kind of investment (excluded if only 401(k)). Think again. That is, at least, according to a new report from financial advisory firm Betterment.\nAbout 97% of those in a recent survey conducted by the digital investment advisor, who said that they had invested in stocks driven primarily by social-media mentions rather than fundamentals would continue to do so in the foreseeable future.\nSuch meme investing trends have been the main drivers behind purchases of companies like bricks-and-mortar videogame retailer GameStop Corp ., movie chain AMC Entertainment Holdings and BlackBerry Ltd. ,who made a ubiquitous cellphone that was all the rage in the 1990s and early 2000s.\nStocks and crypto like dogecoin, that aren’t necessarily offering compelling use-cases, or earnings, are rising on the dint of the collective might of retail investors gathering on sites like Reddit and Discord. It’s a trend that has long been viewed as doomed to implode at some point, but individual investors surveyed by Betterment between late April and early May, who invested in meme stocks before say that they will continue to be investors in that category of investing.\nAccording to the Betterment survey, “there is a near-universal consensus that they will continue investing in stocks like these that get a lot of attention in the future -97% said they’re at least somewhat likely to invest,”\nThat is even as the outlook for GameStop, AMC and its ilk look uncertain.\nBetterment’s survey included a panel of 1,500 respondents from April 26 to May 3, who were 18 years and older and have any kind of investment (excluded if only 401(k)). Of the total, half of them actively day traded their investments.\nAll that said, most of the respondents in the research survey indicated that they had some understanding of meme investments while nearly a quarter, 24%, said they didn’t understand it well at all.\nInvestments like GameStop have captured the imagination of young investors because of the stratospheric gains it has seen.\nFor example, shares of GamStop are up 1,054% on the year and those for AMC have risen more than 2,500%, while dogecoin is up nearly 5,000% in the year to date.\nBy comparison, more traditional assets have seen more muted, although strong gains.
