the price action heading into the new year will be closely monitored — especially given the relatively light economic data and earnings calendar for the coming days.
\n
The S&P 500 (^GSPC) is entering the period known for ushering in the so-called Santa Claus Rally, or seasonally strong timeframe for stocks at the end of each year.
\n
The term, coined by Stock Trader's Almanac in the 1970s, encompasses the final five trading days of the year and first two sessions of the new year. This year, that Santa Claus Rally window is set to start on Monday, Dec. 27 — or the latest a Santa Claus rally has started in 11 years, due to the timing of the holidays this year.
\n
According to data from LPL Financial, the Santa Claus Rally period encapsulates the seven days most likely to be higher in any given year. Since 1950, the Santa Claus Rally period has produced a positive return for the S&P 500 78.9% of the time, with an average return of 1.33%.
\n
“Why are these seven days so strong?” wrote Ryan Detrick, LPL Financial chief market strategist, in a note. “Whether optimism over a coming new year, holiday spending, traders on vacation, institutions squaring up their books — or the holiday spirit — the bottom line is that bulls tend to believe in Santa.”
\n
And if history is any indication, the absence of a Santa Claus Rally has also typically served as a harbinger of lower near-term returns.
\n
\"Going back to the mid-1990s, there have been only six times Santa failed to show in December. January was lower five of those six times, and the full year had a solid gain only once (in 2016, but a mini-bear market early in the year),\" Detrick added.
\n
“Considering the bear markets of 2000 and 2008 both took place after one of the rare instances that Santa failed to show makes believers out of us,\" he said. A bear market typically refers to when stocks drop at least 20% from recent record highs. \"Should this seasonally strong period miss the mark, it could be a warning sign.\"
\n
And this year, investors do have considerable additional concerns to mull heading into the new year. Though stocks closed out Thursday's session at fresh record highs before the long holiday weekend, December still marked a volatile month to start, with renewed concerns over the Omicron variant and the potential for tighter monetary policy from the Federal Reserve weighing on risk assets. Plus, prospects for more near-term fiscal support via the Biden administration's Build Back Better bill have dwindled, and inflation concerns spiked further. Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) — the Fed's preferred inflation gauge — rose at a 4.7% year-over-year clip, or the fastest since 1983.
\n
\"If the U.S. was not battling the Omicron variant, U.S. stocks would be dancing higher as the Santa Claus Rally would have kept the climb going into uncharted territory,\" Edward Moya, chief market strategist at OANDA, wrote in a note last week. \"It is too early to say for sure if we will get a Santa Claus Rally, but given all the short-term risks of Fed tightening, Chinese weakness, fiscal support uncertainty and COVID, Wall Street is not complaining.\"
\n
A man in a Santa Claus costume gestures on the floor at the closing bell of the Dow Industrial Average at the New York Stock Exchange on December 5, 2019 in New York. stocks hovered near their record levels on Monday as dull trading resumed before the release of widely-watched inflation data and the start of first-quarter corporate earnings. The S&P 500 dipped less than 1 point to 4,127.99 after closing at a record high in the previous session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 55.20 points, or 0.2%, to 33,745.40, also falling from a record high. Intel was the biggest decliner in the blue-chip Dow, dropping more than 4%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4% to 13,850.00.Wall Street has been relatively quiet with the S&P 500 moving within 1% for five sessions in a row. Market volatility has declined to pre-pandemic levels amid rising reopening optimism. The Cboe Volatility Index, AKA the VIX or the market’s fear gauge, has traded below 18 for the past four days, a level unseen since February 2020.Shares of Nuance Communications jumped nearly 16% after Microsoft announced it will buy the speech recognition company in a $16 billion deal. The Nuance acquisition represents Microsoft’s largest acquisition since it bought LinkedIn for more than $26 billion in 2016.Nvidia jumped 5.6% after the chip giant said it first quarter revenue for fiscal 2022 is tracking above its previously provided outlook and that it expects demand to continue to exceed supply for much of this year.Nvidia plans new chip to compete with intel in data-center market. The weakness in reopening plays weighed on the overall market with shares of Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line off more than 4% each. United Airlines fell 3.9% after the carrier said its first-quarter revenue is expected to fall 66% compared with the same period in 2019. The new guidance fell near the top of the range between 65% and 70% that the company had previously forecast.“Amid new highs it’s not surprising for the market to be moving somewhat in a holding pattern of late,” said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing product at E-Trade. “All eyes will likely be on the CPI read tomorrow for a benchmark on where we stand on the inflation front. And of course we’re ushering in earnings season which could be a catalyst for market moves over the next few weeks.”The first-quarter earnings reporting season begins this week, with expectations set for broadly positive news and an uptrend for U.S. equities thanks to a recovering economy. Many of the nation’s largest banks, including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase will this week report results for the three months ended March 31.This week is also packed with Federal Reserve speeches and key economic data including a hotly anticipated inflation readingTuesday, when the U.S. consumer price index is released. Economists polled by Dow Jones anticipate a 0.5% gain in CPI month over month and a 2.5% increase from last year’s level.Tesla gained 3.7% to above $700 Monday after Canaccord Genuity upgraded the stock to buy and raised its price target to $1,071, citing its battery innovations.Fed Chairman Jerome Powell on Sunday reiterated that the Fed wants to see inflation rise above its 2% for an extended period before officials move to raise interest rates.“We want to see inflation move up to 2% — and we mean that on a sustainable basis, we don’t mean just tap the base once,” Powell said in an interview that aired Sunday evening on CBS News’ “60 Minutes.” “But then we’d also like to see it on track to move moderately above 2% for some time.”He added that amid an accelerated Covid-19 vaccine rollout and strong fiscal support, the U.S. economy appears to be at a turning point.Powell will also speak Wednesday at an Economic Club of Washington event.Investors will also keep an eye on President Joe Biden’s effort to advance a major infrastructure proposal known as the American Jobs Plan. Biden, who with other Democrats promised significant an infrastructure overhaul in the 2020 elections, wil lmeet with a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Monday to try to persuade Capitol Hill to back the $2 trillion package.Congress will return to Washington this week and be in session for the first time since Biden debuted his proposal, which earmarks hundreds of billions of dollars for roads, bridges, airports, broadband, electric vehicles, housing and job training. The president’s plan would also increase the corporate tax rate to 28% and crack down on other overseas tax avoidance strategies.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"INTC":0.9,"MSFT":0.9,"NUAN":0.9,"NVDA":0.9,"TSLA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":201,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":805187813,"gmtCreate":1627865725832,"gmtModify":1633755848691,"author":{"id":"3579165302374821","authorId":"3579165302374821","name":"Tony0623","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84dac78108a5811a8c221da360733dfd","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579165302374821","authorIdStr":"3579165302374821"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"cool","listText":"cool","text":"cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":12,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/805187813","repostId":"1170689665","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1170689665","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1627857540,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1170689665?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-08-02 06:39","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Alibaba,Uber, DraftKings, GM, Roku, EA, ViacomCBS, and Other Stocks for Investors to Watch This Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1170689665","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"The parade of second-quarter results continues this week. And despite more than one positive news item today,Nvidia(NASDAQ:NVDA)stock is joining in the sell-off, losing 3.4%.
\n
So what
\n
That's a crying shame. After all, this morning saw a new upgrade for Nvidia shares from First Shanghai bank, which raised its recommendation on the stock to buy and set a new $380 price target that's a good 21% above where the stock trades today.
\n
Separately, analysts at Bank of America reiterated their own buy rating on Nvidia stock, predicting that semiconductor \"supply could remain constrained through the 1H 2022 as demand continues to be robust and supply continues to be unable to keep up,\" asStreetInsider.comreported this morning. With pricing power firmly on Nvidia's side, BofA nearly doubled its projection for graphics chip revenue in the first half of 2022, saying it could grow 9% year over year.
\n
Now what
\n
None of that seems to matter to investors spooked by the coronavirus news, however. With analysts worrying aloud that the new B.1.1.529 variant -- and its reported more than 30 mutations -- could pierce the protection provided by vaccinations, investors are running scared.
\n
Is that the right reaction? It might be. But if I might be so bold, investors mightalsowant to pause before hitting the panic button and wait to see if scientists confirm that these mutations actually do make COVID-19 easier to transmit or enable it to cause more serious infections -- or if they don't really do anything worse than the delta variant is already doing.
\n
A more serious worry about Nvidia stock today, on the other hand, is the revelation that Apple might be designing a newaugmented reality systemthat will run on its own chips designed in-house. According toThe Fly, TFI Asset Management just said Apple will design a processor \"with the same computing power level as the M1 for Mac\" chip to use in its headset, due out late next year.
\n
When you consider that a lot of the enthusiasm surrounding Nvidia stock lately has centered on the company's desire to sell technology to help other companiesbuild a metaverse, the prospect that Apple might design chips that can run a metaversewithouthelp from Nvidia seems a scarier prospect to me than anything with the word \"coronavirus\" in it.
\n

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Nvidia Stock Short-Circuited Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Nvidia Stock Short-Circuited Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-11-27 08:17 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happened\nHere we go again.\nNews of a new coronavirus variant in South Africa sent stock markets reeling on Friday, with the Nasdaq Composite off 2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 2.7% ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"NVDA":"英伟达"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/11/26/why-nvidia-stock-short-circuited-today/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1175051322","content_text":"What happened\nHere we go again.\nNews of a new coronavirus variant in South Africa sent stock markets reeling on Friday, with the Nasdaq Composite off 2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 2.7% as of noon ET. With pricing power firmly on Nvidia's side, BofA nearly doubled its projection for graphics chip revenue in the first half of 2022, saying it could grow 9% year over year.\nNow what\nNone of that seems to matter to investors spooked by the coronavirus news, however. With analysts worrying aloud that the new B.1.1.529 variant -- and its reported more than 30 mutations -- could pierce the protection provided by vaccinations, investors are running scared.\nIs that the right reaction? It might be. But if I might be so bold, investors mightalsowant to pause before hitting the panic button and wait to see if scientists confirm that these mutations actually do make COVID-19 easier to transmit or enable it to cause more serious infections -- or if they don't really do anything worse than the delta variant is already doing.\nA more serious worry about Nvidia stock today, on the other hand, is the revelation that Apple might be designing a newaugmented reality systemthat will run on its own chips designed in-house. According toThe Fly, TFI Asset Management just said Apple will design a processor \"with the same computing power level as the M1 for Mac\" chip to use in its headset, due out late next year.\nWhen you consider that a lot of the enthusiasm surrounding Nvidia stock lately has centered on the company's desire to sell technology to help other companiesbuild a metaverse, the prospect that Apple might design chips that can run a metaversewithouthelp from Nvidia seems a scarier prospect to me than anything with the word \"coronavirus\" in it.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"NVDA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":326,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":822755805,"gmtCreate":1634173450869,"gmtModify":1634173450869,"author":{"id":"3579165302374821","authorId":"3579165302374821","name":"Tony0623","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84dac78108a5811a8c221da360733dfd","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579165302374821","authorIdStr":"3579165302374821"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"cool","listText":"cool","text":"cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/822755805","repostId":"2175164396","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2175164396","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1634166327,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2175164396?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-10-14 07:05","market":"us","language":"en","title":"S&P 500, Nasdaq rise with growth stocks; The day's corporate results kicked off third-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies.\n\"My hope is that as we work our way through earnings season, that the forward-looking guidance will be good enough that we'll close the year higher. But right now the market is in a show-me phase,\" said Jim Awad, senior managing director at Clearstead Advisors LLC in New York.\nMega-caps growth names including Amazon.com Inc, Google-parent Alphabet and Microsoft Corp all rose.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.53 points to 34,377.81, the S&P 500 gained 13.15 points, or 0.30%, to 4,363.8 and the Nasdaq Composite added 105.71 points, or 0.73%, to 14,571.64.\nBlackRock Inc gained 3.8% after the world's largest money manager beat quarterly profit estimates as an improving economy helped boost its assets under management, driving up fee income.\nAlso in earnings, Delta Air Lines fell 5.8% after the company reported its first quarterly profit without federal aid since the coronavirus pandemic, but warned of a pre-tax loss for the fourth quarter due to a sharp rise in fuel prices.\nAnalysts expect corporate America to report strong profit growth in the third quarter but investor worries have been mounting over how supply chain problems, labour shortages and higher energy prices might affect businesses emerging from the pandemic.\nBank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley will report results on Thursday, while Goldman Sachs is due to report on Friday.\nAmong other movers, Apple Inc dipped 0.4% after a report said the iPhone marker was planning to cut production of its iPhone 13.0 trading days.\nAdvancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.73-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.39-to-1 ratio favored advancers.\nThe S&P 500 posted 8 new 52-week highs and 9 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 47 new highs and 56 new lows.\nVolume on U.S. exchanges was 9.31 billion shares, compared with the 10.8 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"161125":0.9,"513500":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"ESmain":0.9,"NQmain":0.9,"IVV":0.9,"JPM":0.9,"OEF":0.9,"OEX":0.9,"SDS":0.9,"SH":0.9,"SPXU":0.9,"SPY":0.9,"SSO":0.9,"UPRO":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":595,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":864402175,"gmtCreate":1633136207651,"gmtModify":1633136207941,"author":{"id":"3579165302374821","authorId":"3579165302374821","name":"Tony0623","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84dac78108a5811a8c221da360733dfd","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579165302374821","authorIdStr":"3579165302374821"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"gogogo","listText":"gogogo","text":"gogogo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/864402175","repostId":"2172696913","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":433,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":868195438,"gmtCreate":1632618090824,"gmtModify":1632652144354,"author":{"id":"3579165302374821","authorId":"3579165302374821","name":"Tony0623","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84dac78108a5811a8c221da360733dfd","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579165302374821","authorIdStr":"3579165302374821"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"okay","listText":"okay","text":"okay","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/868195438","repostId":"2170861444","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":288,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":863929466,"gmtCreate":1632354285855,"gmtModify":1632801040678,"author":{"id":"3579165302374821","authorId":"3579165302374821","name":"Tony0623","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84dac78108a5811a8c221da360733dfd","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579165302374821","authorIdStr":"3579165302374821"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"cool","listText":"cool","text":"cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/863929466","repostId":"2169650271","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":329,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
