Will the FAAMG group finally rebound?</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3bce1e839677a495a20253020579c1fc\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"><span>Figure 1: The FAAMG group.</span></p>\n<p><b>Performance in 2021: sleepy</b></p>\n<p>The chart below shows how far behind Amazon has fallen compared to the S&amp;P 500, the industrials-rich Dow and, even more so, the small-cap Russell 2000 index. The 4% return in nearly six months is three to four times worse than the stock’s average performance since the 1997 IPO.</p>\n<p>To be fair, the weakness experienced this year needs to be put within the context of the past 18 months. The 2020 pandemic accelerated trends in online shopping and cloud adoption, both of which are highly bullish for Amazon. Last year, AMZN returned nearly 80%, four times as much as the S&amp;P 500. Now, shares seem to be taking a timeout.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c3fca6462af9a8940aae7f7a84a91702\" tg-width=\"994\" tg-height=\"497\"><span>Figure 2: AMZN vs. S&amp;P 500, DJIA and Russell 2000.</span></p>\n<p><b>The key is probably macroeconomics</b></p>\n<p>A CNBC panel has recently had an interesting&nbsp;conversation&nbsp;about Amazon stock. Fair points were made about business fundamentals and valuations:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Amazon’s share of US e-commerce flirted with 40% in 2020, an impressive number;</li>\n <li>Amazon should surpass Walmart as the largest US retailer next year;</li>\n <li>Only 15% of the workloads are in the cloud – a growth opportunity for Amazon Web Services;</li>\n <li>The MGM deal should attract attention, traffic and purchases to the Amazon ecosystem;</li>\n <li>On the bearish side, P/E is still high, maybe even relative to earnings growth potential.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>But in the end, probably none of the above will mater to Amazon stock and the FAAMG group in the foreseeable future. The single most important variable that will likely determine what happens to tech growth for the rest of the year, in my view, is the macroeconomic landscape.</p>\n<p>There is little doubt that the global (and the US, even more so) economies are on a path to recovery. This should be good news for companies and stocks across the board. The question is whether post-pandemic growth will push inflation and interest rates much higher than where they currently are.</p>\n<p>If so, AMZN and FAAMG in general are likely to continue underperforming. This is the case because faster-growing companies rely on long-term earnings and cash flow to support their stock prices. When inflation and yields are high, financial results that are expected to be delivered far out in the future are discounted more heavily to present value.</p>\n<p>For these reasons, pay attention to inflation data and the Federal Reserve’s decisions around monetary policy – the next chapter will play out on Wednesday, June 16. The stock ended 2020 at $81.52, about 38% off the intraday high for the year.\nThe German vaccine maker's stock picked up momentum early in 2021, breaching the $100 psychological resistance level on Jan. 8 and trading in a $100-$120 range until early March.\nThe marketwide selloff in March did not spare BioNTech, with the stock dropping below $100 for a few sessions before climbing back again. The stock was locked in a lackluster phase until the end of March.\nCome April, the trend began to change. In the very first session of April, the stock rose over 4% and moved steadily higher through the month. In April alone, the stock added 72.4%.\nTo put things in perspective, if an investor had invested $1,000 in BioNTech shares at the end of March, their investment would now be worth $1,909.46 (using the intraday high of $207.55 hit on Monday). This would mean nearly doubling the investment in a span of a month.\nWhat's Behind The BioNTech Rally:The stock has been supported by the intermittent news flow regarding the company's vaccine.\nIn late March, the companies reported positive top-line results from a study evaluating the vaccine in adolescents.\nOn April 1, BioNTech and Pfizer reported data on BNT162b2 following six months of follow-up that confirmed its efficacy and safety.\nThe companies announced April 9 a request to the FDA to authorize expanded use of the vaccine in adolescents ages 12-15.\nThe FDA'sdecisionto temporarily pause the use ofJohnson & Johnson'sJNJ 0.2%vaccine also proved positive for BioNTech, which added about 7% on April 13 when the pause was announced.\nIn mid-April, the companies announced an agreement with the European Union to supply 100 million doses of BNT162b2, which is named Comirnaty in Europe, in 2021. With that, the total number of doses delivered to the EU is 600 million.\nLast week, a request was submitted to the EU to expand conditional marketing authorization to adolescents in the EU.\nWhat Lies Ahead For BioNTech Stock?BNT162b2 is expected to continue to boost BioNTech's top-line. Having delivered 200 million doses by the end of March, the company has signed orders for supplying 1.4 billion doses in 2021.\nPfizer and BioNTech plan to boost the manufacturing capacity for the vaccine to 2.5 billion doses by the end of 2021.\n\"BioNTech and Pfizer will be the standout leader in COVID-19 vaccination globally, with demand increasing for the 2.5Bn doses they are targeting to manufacture in 2021,\" SVB Leerink analyst Daina Graybosch said in a note.\nWith the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic now sweeping across several nations, the companies have a lucrative opportunity. The companies have also proved the efficacy of the vaccine against variants.\nOnce the pandemic phase passes, the vaccine has scope for use in endemic setting.\nMore importantly, BioNTech is not a one-trick pony. The company has a broad oncology pipeline consisting of 13 product candidates.\nWeighing in all the opportunities, further upside in the stock cannot be ruled out.\nBNTX Price Action:At last check, S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures also climbed about 0.5%, pointing to gains for both the broad-market index and technology stocks.\n\nInvestors have grown concerned over the Delta coronavirus variant, prompting a reassessment of the economy’s prospects. Piper Sandler downgraded the stock to neutral from buy and slashed its price target to $4 from $14, adding that it struggles to see a path forward for Tenapanor.\n7) Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks fall in premarket trading after the selloff in Bitcoin accelerated and pushed the token below $30,000 for the first time in around a month. Brent crude gained 0.7% to $69.11 a barrel. The U.S. crude contract for August delivery, which expires later on Tuesday, was up 0.9% at $66.64 a barrel.
