the advent of online trading houses, it's far easier now to get in the game of day trading","content":"
Thanks to the advent of online trading houses, it's far easier now to get in the game of day trading. Before the Internet, only people working for large financial institutions, brokerages, or physical trading houses, could take part in the stock market in such an active fashion. Today, markets and transactions are accessible to almost anyone.
\n
MoMo Productions/DigitalVision via Getty Images
\n
What Day Trading Is
\n
At base, day trading consists of frequently buying, selling and short-selling equities in a short period of time, usually reversing out of several positions within the same trading session. The aim is to earn a profit on each trade, sometimes even small profits, and watch those gains compound. The practice can be risky, but also highly lucrative.
\n
Day trading may sound enticing for those looking to make a swift profit, but it can be extremely challenging to make a formidable career out of the practice. In fact, a study published by the University of California, Davis, in 2010 revealed that only 1% of day traders consistently make a living from that practice.
\n
But for the few who can succeed in the high-stakes world of day trading, it likely will consume most to all of their time. It is very much a full-time job.
\n
How Day Trading Works
\n
At its core, day trading is all about stock market volatility; day traders look for stocks that are on the move. Whether it’s positive or negative news which alters a stock’s trajectory, economic reports, corporate earnings, or simply a change in market mood, day traders cash in on rapid change. They enter and exit positions very quickly. Day traders must monitor positions closely, and often make quick, high-stakes decisions. There's no going to the pub for an afternoon drink hoping the positions they've taken will turn out.
\n
Something to note, opportunities are not limited to betting that an investment security will rise in price; traders can also profit by betting on downward price movements. Liquidity is also very important to day traders, even more so than other investors. Since day traders need to be able to move in and out of positions with ease, they need to look out for equities which are highly liquid.
\n
\n Key Takeaway: Day trading is very much about stock market volatility; day traders look for stocks making moves over short time spans.\n
\n
Most day trading strategies offer a lot of flexibility, allowing day traders to keep their positions open from a few minutes to a few hours. The amount of time that the position is open depends on how the trade is doing and whether the day trader can seize a profit at that time.
\n
Day traders can consider a variety of markets such as futures, equities, currencies, and options. And they can have access to all the exchanges via a direct access broker. It’s one of the fastest and most affordable ways to engage in day trading.
\n
Methods of the Day Trader
\n
There are various types of day trading, each suited for different styles. They can range from short-term trading, where stocks are held for a few seconds or minutes, to more long-term positions where stocks are held throughout the trading day.
\n
Day trader strategies include:
\n
\n

Scalping:This method seeks to make many small profits on small price changes throughout the day.

\n

Range trading:This method mostly relies on support and resistance levels to make decisions. (Support and resistance levels are concepts which assist traders to fully comprehend and act in the markets. Support refers to a price level where a downtrend is interrupted due to rising demand for an asset. Resistance refers to a level where an uptrend reverses a sell-off.)

\n

News-based trading:Here, day traders take advantage of volatility surrounding news events.

\n

High-frequency trading ((HFT)):This method utilizes algorithms to exploit small or short-term market inefficiencies.

\n
\n
Swing Trading vs. Trend Trading vs. Buy and Hold
\n
While a day trader closes out his positions at the end of each trading day, a swing trader can hold her positions for days to even weeks before selling. In swing trading, since there is more time for an equity’s price to increase, there is also more opportunity to profit. With the right selling strategy, swing trading can be much less risky than day trading.
\n
By contrast, trend trading involves using a stock’s past price movements to make predictions on its future trajectory. Since trend traders operate on a longer timeline, they can also gauge broader economic trends and business cycles to determine when to buy and sell a stock. This strategy isn’t usually applied by day traders or swing traders.
\n
Meanwhile, buy-and-hold is often hailed as one of the best strategies available to investors. Under this approach, investors buy an asset and hold it for a few years or even decades, if they wish to, no matter what bumps occur along the way. The aim of this highly passive investing style is to ride out short-term market instability and losses in order to maximize returns over the long term. This is the basis for most long-term investing programs like 401(k)s and IRAs.
\n
Buying on Margin
\n
Day traders often use borrowed money to make trades, a method called “buying on margin.” With a margin account, a trader can use the securities they already own as leverage to borrow up to 50% of the value of the security they’re going to buy. Buying on margin can help day traders increase their profits substantially — far more than what they could have made using their own money. But the practice doesn’t come without risks. Leverage magnifies one's losses when trades don't work out, resulting in costly margin calls.
\n
Day Trading Rules and Risks
\n
While day trading is neither illegal nor unethical, it can be extremely risky. In fact, the Securities and Exchange Commission warns on its website that the practice can result in substantial financial losses in a very short time.
\n
While conventional investing involves the careful analysis of stocks to determine whether an investment is wise, day traders use state-of-the-art technology and technical analysis to spot intraday trends. The risks to investors can be so grave that the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has rules in place to monitor this fast-moving practice.
\n
\n Key Takeaway: Day trading is neither illegal nor unethical, but it can be extraordinarily risky. The SEC warns that it can result in substantial financial losses in a very short time.\n
\n
In addition to the SEC, FINRA also provides oversight of day traders and enforces certain rules and limitations. For instance, it specifies that a \"pattern day trader\" must maintain at minimum $25,000 in equity on any day that they day trade. (A non-pattern day trader is only required to maintain $2,000). Furthermore, the required minimum equity must be in the account before any day-trading begins. And if the account slips below $25,000, day trading is not permitted until it is restored.
\n
A day trader may trade up to four times the account's maintenance margin excess as of end of business of the previous day. If a day trader exceeds that limit, however, the brokerage firm will issue a day-trading margin call. The day trader will then have, at most, five business days to deposit funds to meet that call. The brokerage firm can also charge a commission for these transactions.
\n
Does Cryptocurrency Trading Count as Day Trading?
\n
Another way to get involved in day trading is via cryptocurrencies. But since they aren’t regulated by the SEC or FINRA, at least at this point, investors won’t have to worry about day trading limits.
\n
Day Trading Taxes
\n
Day trading doesn’t qualify for favorable tax treatment. Successful day traders are expected to pay income taxes just like traditional investors in the stock market. In very rare cases, day traders can apply for special day trader tax treatment with the IRS. To qualify for that status, the IRS looks for the following criteria: 1) Profit seeking must derive from daily market movements in securities' prices, not from dividends or longer-term capital appreciation. 2) Market activity must be high. 3) The investor must be trading with both continuity and regularity.
\n
But for those who aren’t eligible, the following rules apply:
\n
\n

Day traders are required to pay taxes on investment gains in the year they sell.

\n

Day traders may offset gains against losses, but the gains they offset cannot total more than their losses.

\n

If positions are held for a year or less, ordinary income taxes apply to any gains.

\n
\n
Is Day Trading for Everyone?
\n
For a new investor just starting to get into the markets, day trading likely isn’t suitable. Most day traders bring with them substantial training and knowledge about the markets. And with just one bad trade, large amounts of money can be lost very quickly.
\n
\n Tip: Day trading isn't usually advised for newer investors. Most day traders possess substantial training and knowledge about the markets.\n
\n
Unlike brokers who trade other people’s money, day traders are putting their own assets on the line. That’s precisely why regulatory bodies warn investors of the pitfalls associated with this type of trading.
\n
Many professional money managers even shy away from the practice of day trading. Before the Internet, only people working for large financial institutions, brokerages, or physical trading houses, could take part in the stock market in such an active fashion. Today, markets and transactions are accessible to almost anyone.\nMoMo Productions/DigitalVision via Getty Images\nWhat Day Trading Is\nAt base, day trading consists of frequently buying, selling and short-selling equities in a short period of time, usually reversing out of several positions within the same trading session. The aim is to earn a profit on each trade, sometimes even small profits, and watch those gains compound. The practice can be risky, but also highly lucrative.\nDay trading may sound enticing for those looking to make a swift profit, but it can be extremely challenging to make a formidable career out of the practice. In fact, a study published by the University of California, Davis, in 2010 revealed that only 1% of day traders consistently make a living from that practice.\nBut for the few who can succeed in the high-stakes world of day trading, it likely will consume most to all of their time. It is very much a full-time job.\nHow Day Trading Works\nAt its core, day trading is all about stock market volatility; day traders look for stocks that are on the move. There's no going to the pub for an afternoon drink hoping the positions they've taken will turn out.\nSomething to note, opportunities are not limited to betting that an investment security will rise in price; traders can also profit by betting on downward price movements. Liquidity is also very important to day traders, even more so than other investors. Since day traders need to be able to move in and out of positions with ease, they need to look out for equities which are highly liquid.\n\nKey Takeaway: Day trading is very much about stock market volatility; day traders look for stocks making moves over short time spans.\n\nMost day trading strategies offer a lot of flexibility, allowing day traders to keep their positions open from a few minutes to a few hours. The amount of time that the position is open depends on how the trade is doing and whether the day trader can seize a profit at that time.\nDay traders can consider a variety of markets such as futures, equities, currencies, and options. And they can have access to all the exchanges via a direct access broker. It’s one of the fastest and most affordable ways to engage in day trading.\nMethods of the Day Trader\nThere are various types of day trading, each suited for different styles. They can range from short-term trading, where stocks are held for a few seconds or minutes, to more long-term positions where stocks are held throughout the trading day.\nDay trader strategies include:\n\nScalping:This method seeks to make many small profits on small price changes throughout the day.\nRange trading:This method mostly relies on support and resistance levels to make decisions. (Support and resistance levels are concepts which assist traders to fully comprehend and act in the markets. Support refers to a price level where a downtrend is interrupted due to rising demand for an asset. Resistance refers to a level where an uptrend reverses a sell-off.)\nNews-based trading:Here, day traders take advantage of volatility surrounding news events.\nHigh-frequency trading ((HFT)):This method utilizes algorithms to exploit small or short-term market inefficiencies.\n\nSwing Trading vs. Trend Trading vs. Buy and Hold\nWhile a day trader closes out his positions at the end of each trading day, a swing trader can hold her positions for days to even weeks before selling. In swing trading, since there is more time for an equity’s price to increase, there is also more opportunity to profit. With the right selling strategy, swing trading can be much less risky than day trading.\nBy contrast, trend trading involves using a stock’s past price movements to make predictions on its future trajectory. Since trend traders operate on a longer timeline, they can also gauge broader economic trends and business cycles to determine when to buy and sell a stock. This strategy isn’t usually applied by day traders or swing traders.\nMeanwhile, buy-and-hold is often hailed as one of the best strategies available to investors. Under this approach, investors buy an asset and hold it for a few years or even decades, if they wish to, no matter what bumps occur along the way. The aim of this highly passive investing style is to ride out short-term market instability and losses in order to maximize returns over the long term. This is the basis for most long-term investing programs like 401(k)s and IRAs.\nBuying on Margin\nDay traders often use borrowed money to make trades, a method called “buying on margin.” With a margin account, a trader can use the securities they already own as leverage to borrow up to 50% of the value of the security they’re going to buy. Buying on margin can help day traders increase their profits substantially — far more than what they could have made using their own money. But the practice doesn’t come without risks. Leverage magnifies one's losses when trades don't work out, resulting in costly margin calls.\nDay Trading Rules and Risks\nWhile day trading is neither illegal nor unethical, it can be extremely risky. In fact, the Securities and Exchange Commission warns on its website that the practice can result in substantial financial losses in a very short time.\nWhile conventional investing involves the careful analysis of stocks to determine whether an investment is wise, day traders use state-of-the-art technology and technical analysis to spot intraday trends. The risks to investors can be so grave that the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has rules in place to monitor this fast-moving practice.\n\nKey Takeaway: Day trading is neither illegal nor unethical, but it can be extraordinarily risky. The SEC warns that it can result in substantial financial losses in a very short time.\n\nIn addition to the SEC, FINRA also provides oversight of day traders and enforces certain rules and limitations. For instance, it specifies that a \"pattern day trader\" must maintain at minimum $25,000 in equity on any day that they day trade. (A non-pattern day trader is only required to maintain $2,000). Furthermore, the required minimum equity must be in the account before any day-trading begins. And if the account slips below $25,000, day trading is not permitted until it is restored.\nA day trader may trade up to four times the account's maintenance margin excess as of end of business of the previous day. If a day trader exceeds that limit, however, the brokerage firm will issue a day-trading margin call. The day trader will then have, at most, five business days to deposit funds to meet that call. The brokerage firm can also charge a commission for these transactions.\nDoes Cryptocurrency Trading Count as Day Trading?\nAnother way to get involved in day trading is via cryptocurrencies. But since they aren’t regulated by the SEC or FINRA, at least at this point, investors won’t have to worry about day trading limits.\nDay Trading Taxes\nDay trading doesn’t qualify for favorable tax treatment. 3) The investor must be trading with both continuity and regularity.\nBut for those who aren’t eligible, the following rules apply:\n\nDay traders are required to pay taxes on investment gains in the year they sell.\nDay traders may offset gains against losses, but the gains they offset cannot total more than their losses.\nIf positions are held for a year or less, ordinary income taxes apply to any gains.\n\nIs Day Trading for Everyone?\nFor a new investor just starting to get into the markets, day trading likely isn’t suitable. Most day traders bring with them substantial training and knowledge about the markets. And with just one bad trade, large amounts of money can be lost very quickly.\n\nTip: Day trading isn't usually advised for newer investors. Most day traders possess substantial training and knowledge about the markets.\n\nUnlike brokers who trade other people’s money, day traders are putting their own assets on the line. That’s precisely why regulatory bodies warn investors of the pitfalls associated with this type of trading.\nMany professional money managers even shy away from the practice of day trading. They argue that the benefits don’t warrant the risks. But for all the perils, there seem to be some people who can make a great deal of money.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":263,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":897919622,"gmtCreate":1628867540366,"gmtModify":1631884553362,"author":{"id":"3581647112727076","authorId":"3581647112727076","name":"KuiQ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2b25bf7889f90f8ee27c0291d6f8e47","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581647112727076","authorIdStr":"3581647112727076"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Docusign(DOCU)$doing well ","listText":"$Docusign(DOCU)$doing well ","text":"$Docusign(DOCU)$doing well","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/73ba24abe8eed4ae5af2d95876e7e5ae","width":"1125","height":"2596"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/897919622","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":274,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":894951847,"gmtCreate":1628784645589,"gmtModify":1631885514210,"author":{"id":"3581647112727076","authorId":"3581647112727076","name":"KuiQ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2b25bf7889f90f8ee27c0291d6f8e47","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581647112727076","authorIdStr":"3581647112727076"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$UBS Group AG(UBS)$1 free share. A stock that doubled in value was known as a \"two-bagger,\" while a stock that rose 20 times was called a \"20-bagger.\"
\n
Growth-oriented investors often seek out multibagger stocks in the tech sector, which has more than its fair share of high-growth and disruptive companies. It might seem tough to find the next big multibagger in this diverse sector, but studying a few stocks that previously crossed that threshold might help investors identify the upcoming winners.
\n
Let's examine three tech stocks that turned a modest $10,000 investment into more than $500,000 -- and what lessons we can glean from their massive multibagger gains.
\n
1. Baidu: Turning $10,000 into more than $600,000
\n
Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU), the Chinese tech company that owns the country's largest search engine, went public in 2005. If you had invested $10,000 in its IPO, your stake would be worth over $600,000 today.
\n
Between fiscal 2005 and 2010, Baidu's annual revenue rose at a whopping compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 97.8%. The growth of the Chinese economy, rising income levels, and higher internet penetration rates drove that growth, and Baidu solidified its position as the online search leader in 2010 after Alphabet's Google pulled out of mainland China.
\n
Between 2010 and 2015, Baidu's annual revenue grew at a CAGR of 53.6% as it expanded its ecosystem beyond its search engine with new mobile apps and cloud storage services.
\n
But between 2015 and 2020, Baidu's revenue only rose at a CAGR of 9.9%, as tighter restrictions on its online ads, rising competition from monolithic apps like Tencent's WeChat, and the slowdown of China's economy throttled its growth. The pandemic exacerbated that pain last year, and Baidu remains exposed to the Chinese government's escalating crackdown on its top tech companies.
\n
As a result, Baidu's stock price has declined about 40% over the past six months and has stayed roughly flat over the past five years. That dismal return indicates high-growth multibagger stocks like Baidu can lose their momentum as their core markets mature, new competitors enter the market, and government regulators change the rules of the game.
\n
2. Shopify: Turning $10,000 into nearly $900,000
\n
Shopify (NYSE:SHOP), a Canadian e-commerce services company that enables businesses to build their own online stores, fulfill their own orders, and manage their own marketing campaigns, went public in 2015. A $10,000 investment in its IPO would be worth nearly $900,000 today.
\n
Shopify grew like a weed because many smaller businesses didn't want to tether themselves to big online marketplaces like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), which rein in their sellers with listing fees and restrictive rules. That transition accelerated throughout the pandemic last year as more businesses opened online stores.
\n
Shopify's revenue rose at a CAGR of 70.2% between 2015 and 2020. The stock has risen more than 30% this year, even as concerns about slower online spending in a post-pandemic market battered other e-commerce stocks -- and investors continue to pay a premium for Shopify's growth at over 40 times this year's sales.
\n
Unlike Baidu, Shopify doesn't yet face any existential challenges. Its decentralized e-commerce approach continues to disrupt Amazon's centralized platform, and it could have plenty of room to grow over the long term as more offline merchants bring their businesses online.
\n
3. Nvidia: Turning $10,000 into $8.16 million
\n
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), the world's largest producer of discrete GPUs for computers, servers, and video game consoles, went public in 1999. If you had invested $10,000 in its IPO back then, your initial investment would now be worth nearly $8.2 million.
\n
Nvidia experienced a massive growth spurt over the past five years, as demand for its gaming and data center GPUs hit record levels. A new generation of PC games lifted sales of its gaming GPUs, while new AI applications at data centers sparked fierce demand for its high-end server GPUs.
\n
Higher cryptocurrency prices also periodically boosted sales of Nvidia's gaming GPUs for mining purposes, and it sold more Arm-based Tegra CPUs for connected cars and Nintendo's Switch consoles.
\n
Those tailwinds, along with its acquisition of the data center equipment maker Mellanox last April, boosted Nvidia's annual revenue at a CAGR of 27.2% between fiscal 2016 and fiscal 2021.
\n
Nvidia remains one of the market's fastest-growing chipmakers, even as its proposed acquisition of Arm Holdings remains on thin ice. It continues to widen its lead against Advanced Micro Devices in the discrete GPU market, and it remains a solid investment on the secular growth of the gaming, data center, and AI markets.
\n
Nvidia's stock price has rallied more than 50% this year, yet its stock still looks surprisingly cheap at 12 times forward earnings. Therefore, Nvidia's stock could still have plenty of room to run -- even if the regulators strike down its ambitious takeover of Arm Holdings.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Tech Stocks That Turned $10,000 Into Over $500,000
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Tech Stocks That Turned $10,000 Into Over $500,000\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-11 21:15 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The legendary investor Peter Lynch coined the term \"multibagger\" in his evergreen investing book One Up on Wall Street to describe stocks that have more than doubled in price. Secretary-General António Guterres urged an immediate end to coal energy and other high-polluting fossil fuels.
\n
“The alarm bells are deafening,” Guterres said in a statement. “This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.”
\n
The IPCC report comes just three months before a major U.N. climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, where nations will be under pressure to pledge ambitious climate action and substantial financing.
\n
Drawing on more than 14,000 scientific studies, the report gives the most comprehensive and detailed picture yet of how climate change is altering the natural world -- and what still could be ahead.
\n
Unless immediate, rapid and large-scale action is taken to reduce emissions, the report says, the average global temperature will likely cross the 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold within the next 20 years.
\n
So far, nations’ pledges to cut emissions have been inadequate for bringing down the level of greenhouse gases accumulated in the atmosphere.
\n
Reacting to the findings, governments and campaigners expressed alarm.
\n
“The IPCC report underscores the overwhelming urgency of this moment,” U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said in a statement. “The world must come together before the ability to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is out of reach.”
\n
IRREVERSIBLE CHANGE
\n
Emissions “unequivocally caused by human activities” have pushed today’s average global temperature 1.1C higher than the preindustrial average -- and would have pushed it 0.5C further if not for the tempering effect of pollution in the atmosphere, the report says.
\n
That means that, as societies transition away from fossil fuels, much of the aerosols in the air would vanish -- and temperatures could spike.
\n
Scientists warn that warming more than 1.5C above the preindustrial average could trigger runaway climate change with catastrophic impacts, such as heat so intense that crops fail or people die just from being outdoors.
\n
Every additional 0.5C of warming will also boost the intensity and frequency of heat extremes and heavy rainfall, as well as droughts in some regions. Because temperatures fluctuate from year to year, scientists measure climate warming in terms of 20-year averages.
\n
\"We have all the evidence we need to show we are in a climate crisis,\" said three-time IPCC co-author Sonia Seneviratne, a climate scientist at ETH Zurich who doubts she will sign up for a fourth report. \"Policy makers have enough information. You can ask: Is it a meaningful use of scientists' time, if nothing is being done?\"
\n
The 1.1C warming already recorded has been enough to unleash disastrous weather. This year, heat waves killed hundreds in the Pacific Northwest and smashed records around the world. Wildfires fueled by heat and drought are sweeping away entire towns in the U.S. West, releasing record emissions from Siberian forests, and driving Greeks to flee their lands by ferry. (Graphic on warming planet)
\n
\"Every bit of warming matters,\" said IPCC co-author Ed Hawkins, a climate scientist at the University of Reading in Britain. \"The consequences get worse and worse as we get warmer.\"
\n
Greenland’s ice sheet is \"virtually certain\" to continue melting. Oceans will keep warming, with surface levels rising for centuries to come.
\n
It’s too late to prevent these particular changes. The best the world can do is to slow them down so that countries have more time to prepare and adapt.
\n
“We are now committed to some aspects of climate change, some of which are irreversible for hundreds to thousands of years,” said IPCC co-author Tamsin Edwards, a climate scientist at King’s College London. “But the more we limit warming, the more we can avoid or slow down those changes.”
\n
‘WE STILL HAVE CHOICES TO MAKE’
\n
But even to slow climate change, the report says, the world is running out of time.
\n
If the world drastically cuts emissions in the next decade, average temperatures could still rise 1.5C by 2040 and possibly 1.6C by 2060 before stabilizing.
\n
If the world does not cut emissions dramatically and instead continues the current trajectory, the planet could see 2.0C warming by 2060 and 2.7C by the century’s end.
\n
The earth has not been that warm since the Pliocene Epoch roughly 3 million years ago -- when the first ancestors to humans were appearing and oceans were 25 meters (82 feet) higher than today.
\n
It could get even worse, if warming triggers feedback loops that release even more climate-warming carbon emissions -- such as the melting of Arctic permafrost or the dieback of global forests. Under these high-emissions scenarios, Earth could broil at temperatures 4.4C above the preindustrial average by 2081-2100.
\n
“We have already changed our planet, and some of those changes we will have to live with for centuries and millennia to come,” said IPCC co-author Joeri Rogelj, a climate scientist at Imperial College London.
\n
The question now, he said, is how many more irreversible changes we avoid: \"We still have choices to make.\"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
‘Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.’ UN climate report warns of ‘code red for humanity.’
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n‘Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.’ UN climate report warns of ‘code red for humanity.’\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Reuters
\n
2021-08-09 17:35
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
* Human activities 'unequivocally' causing climate change
\n
* World is likely to hit 1.5C warming limit within 20 years
\n
* Greenland’s melting, sea level rise and other impacts locked in
\n
Aug 9 (Reuters) - The U.N. climate panel sounded a dire warning Monday, saying the world is dangerously close to runaway warming – and that humans are \"unequivocally\" to blame.
\n
Already, greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere are high enough to guarantee climate disruption for decades if not centuries, scientists warn in a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change $(IPCC)$.
\n
That’s on top of the deadly heat waves, powerful hurricanes and other weather extremes that are happening now and are likely to become more severe.
\n
Describing the report as a \"code red for humanity,\" U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged an immediate end to coal energy and other high-polluting fossil fuels.\n“The alarm bells are deafening,” Guterres said in a statement. “This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.”\nThe IPCC report comes just three months before a major U.N. climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, where nations will be under pressure to pledge ambitious climate action and substantial financing.\nDrawing on more than 14,000 scientific studies, the report gives the most comprehensive and detailed picture yet of how climate change is altering the natural world -- and what still could be ahead.\nUnless immediate, rapid and large-scale action is taken to reduce emissions, the report says, the average global temperature will likely cross the 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold within the next 20 years.\nSo far, nations’ pledges to cut emissions have been inadequate for bringing down the level of greenhouse gases accumulated in the atmosphere.\nReacting to the findings, governments and campaigners expressed alarm.\n“The IPCC report underscores the overwhelming urgency of this moment,” U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said in a statement. “The world must come together before the ability to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is out of reach.”\nIRREVERSIBLE CHANGE\nEmissions “unequivocally caused by human activities” have pushed today’s average global temperature 1.1C higher than the preindustrial average -- and would have pushed it 0.5C further if not for the tempering effect of pollution in the atmosphere, the report says.\nThat means that, as societies transition away from fossil fuels, much of the aerosols in the air would vanish -- and temperatures could spike.\nScientists warn that warming more than 1.5C above the preindustrial average could trigger runaway climate change with catastrophic impacts, such as heat so intense that crops fail or people die just from being outdoors.\nEvery additional 0.5C of warming will also boost the intensity and frequency of heat extremes and heavy rainfall, as well as droughts in some regions. Because temperatures fluctuate from year to year, scientists measure climate warming in terms of 20-year averages.\n\"We have all the evidence we need to show we are in a climate crisis,\" said three-time IPCC co-author Sonia Seneviratne, a climate scientist at ETH Zurich who doubts she will sign up for a fourth report. \"Policy makers have enough information. You can ask: Is it a meaningful use of scientists' time, if nothing is being done?\"\nThe 1.1C warming already recorded has been enough to unleash disastrous weather. This year, heat waves killed hundreds in the Pacific Northwest and smashed records around the world. Wildfires fueled by heat and drought are sweeping away entire towns in the U.S. West, releasing record emissions from Siberian forests, and driving Greeks to flee their lands by ferry. trading.

But for all the perils, there seem to be some people who can make a great deal of money.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":263,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":805729672,"gmtCreate":1627908279296,"gmtModify":1631885514301,"author":{"id":"3581647112727076","authorId":"3581647112727076","name":"KuiQ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2b25bf7889f90f8ee27c0291d6f8e47","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581647112727076","authorIdStr":"3581647112727076"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Virus is everywhere ","listText":"Virus is everywhere ","text":"Virus is everywhere","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/805729672","repostId":"1191539307","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1191539307","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627889804,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1191539307?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-08-02 15:36","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Volatility Warnings Signal Virus May Bring Another Rough August","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1191539307","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Tallbacken sees cause for concern in VIX making higher lows\nRBC suggests Amazon put options as delta","content":"
\n
Tallbacken sees cause for concern in VIX making higher lows
\n
RBC suggests Amazon put options as delta-variant hedge
\n
\n
Concerns about the delta variant of Covid-19 look to be seeping into volatility markets just as the traditionally challenging month of August kicks off.
\n
The Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, has made a series of higher lows in recent weeks, a pattern Tallbacken Capital Advisors LLC Chief Executive Officer Michael Purves says should concern investors.
