rally amid thin trading volumes, with investors trying to shrug off the impact from Omicron-driven travel disruptions and store closures.
\n
Apple Inc(AAPL.O) closed all of its 12 New York City stores to indoor shopping, the latest company to tighten protocols as cases surged across the United States and prompted thousands of flight cancellations for the fourth day on Monday.
\n
However, strong consumer demand trends reinstated confidence about the underlying economic strength and helped Wall Street climb for a fourth straight day on Monday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq posted their best four-day rally since November 2020.
\n
Data last week showing the Omicron variant being less deadly than feared, and new pills and more vaccines to fight COVID-19 also spurred risk appetite, putting the three main indexes on pace for monthly gains.
\n
At 8:00 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were up 91 points, or 0.25%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 11.75 points, or 0.25%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 77.75 points, or 0.47%. Some megacap companies have roared in the recent rally, with Apple Inc (AAPL.O) — up marginally in premarket trading — within spitting distance of becoming the first U.S. company to hit $3 trillion in market capitalization.
\n
*Source From Tiger Trade, EST 08:00
\n
Stocks making the biggest moves premarket: Apple, Vipshop, Coinbase and others
\n
Apple (AAPL) – The company is once again approaching a $3 trillion market value, needing to reach $182.86 per share to achieve that milestone. Separately, Apple is closing its 12 New York City stores to indoor traffic due to the spread of the Covid-19 omicron variant. Apple edged higher by 0.3% in premarket action.
\n
Tesla(TSLA)– Tesla has 30% upside in 2022 on China demand, Wedbush Says, and reiterates its outperform rating and $1,400 price target. Tesla stock added 1.77% in premarket.
\n
Nvidia (NVDA) – The graphics chip maker’s shares added 1.2% in the premarket after rising for the past 4 days in a row and helping to lead the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) to a record high in Monday trading. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) – also a big factor in driving the SOXX higher – added 1% in premarket trading. Chip stocks have been rising amid supply shortages and strong demand, leading to higher prices for chips.
\n
Coinbase (COIN) – The cryptocurrency exchange operator’s shares dropped 2.2% in the premarket as the price of bitcoin retreated, putting the stock in danger of breaking a four-day win streak that saw it gain 17.7% over that stretch.
\n
Vipshop Holdings (VIPS) – The China-based e-commerce company’s stock fell 2.4% in the premarket after cutting its current-quarter revenue guidance. Vipshop cited its “latest view on the market and operational conditions” without being specific, but a Jefferies report said warmer weather and an increase in Covid-19 cases likely dented consumer demand.
\n

\n
R.R. This year, that Santa Claus Rally window is set to start on Monday, Dec. 27 — or the latest a Santa Claus rally has started in 11 years, due to the timing of the holidays this year.
\n
According to data from LPL Financial, the Santa Claus Rally period encapsulates the seven days most likely to be higher in any given year. Since 1950, the Santa Claus Rally period has produced a positive return for the S&P 500 78.9% of the time, with an average return of 1.33%.
\n
“Why are these seven days so strong?” wrote Ryan Detrick, LPL Financial chief market strategist, in a note. “Whether optimism over a coming new year, holiday spending, traders on vacation, institutions squaring up their books — or the holiday spirit — the bottom line is that bulls tend to believe in Santa.”
\n
And if history is any indication, the absence of a Santa Claus Rally has also typically served as a harbinger of lower near-term returns.
\n
\"Going back to the mid-1990s, there have been only six times Santa failed to show in December. January was lower five of those six times, and the full year had a solid gain only once (in 2016, but a mini-bear market early in the year),\" Detrick added.
\n
“Considering the bear markets of 2000 and 2008 both took place after one of the rare instances that Santa failed to show makes believers out of us,\" he said. A bear market typically refers to when stocks drop at least 20% from recent record highs. \"Should this seasonally strong period miss the mark, it could be a warning sign.\"
\n
And this year, investors do have considerable additional concerns to mull heading into the new year. Though stocks closed out Thursday's session at fresh record highs before the long holiday weekend, December still marked a volatile month to start, with renewed concerns over the Omicron variant and the potential for tighter monetary policy from the Federal Reserve weighing on risk assets. Plus, prospects for more near-term fiscal support via the Biden administration's Build Back Better bill have dwindled, and inflation concerns spiked further. Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) — the Fed's preferred inflation gauge — rose at a 4.7% year-over-year clip, or the fastest since 1983.
\n
\"If the U.S. was not battling the Omicron variant, U.S. stocks would be dancing higher as the Santa Claus Rally would have kept the climb going into uncharted territory,\" Edward Moya, chief market strategist at OANDA, wrote in a note last week. \"It is too early to say for sure if we will get a Santa Claus Rally, but given all the short-term risks of Fed tightening, Chinese weakness, fiscal support uncertainty and COVID, Wall Street is not complaining.\"
\n
A man in a Santa Claus costume gestures on the floor at the closing bell of the Dow Industrial Average at the New York Stock Exchange on December 5, 2019 in New York. Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) — the Fed's preferred inflation gauge — rose at a 4.7% year-over-year clip, or the fastest since 1983.\n\"If the U.S. was not battling the Omicron variant, U.S. stocks would be dancing higher as the Santa Claus Rally would have kept the climb going into uncharted territory,\" Edward Moya, chief market strategist at OANDA, wrote in a note last week. \"It is too early to say for sure if we will get a Santa Claus Rally, but given all the short-term risks of Fed tightening, Chinese weakness, fiscal support uncertainty and COVID, Wall Street is not complaining.\"\nA man in a Santa Claus costume gestures on the floor at the closing bell of the Dow Industrial Average at the New York Stock Exchange on December 5, 2019 in New York. It would have also been nice to hear more about its partnerships with Samsung, LG Display Co Ltd (NYSE: LPL), Razer Inc (OTC: RAZFF), Vizio Holding Group (NYSE: VZIO), Logitech (NASDAQ, LOGI) and Asus management previously teased.
\n
The verdict
\n
GameStop is a company undergoing transformation from a brick-and-mortar chain into an e-commerce retailer. But this turnaround is taking place in an environment shaped by escalating costs that are causing the company to burn through twice as much cash compared to a year ago. Unfortunately, management is practically not any particular insight into what it is doing to engineer this business turnaround. However, in times when so many companies used opaque reporting in the past to cover up fraud, simply saying buzzwords and catchphrases is never as good as actually shining light on the company’s actions. In addition, a recent Kotaku report show the discontent of store workers who say they are overworked and understaffed. Fortunately for the company, it seems small investors are patient and are trusting the leadership of former Chewy.com (NYSE: CHWY) founder Ryan Cohen who made billions selling pet food online. He brought former Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) executives on board, and since then, GameStop has reduced online shipping times for games from weeks to days. For now, it seems investors are giving him space to do what is necessary for GameStop to reverse course – only time will tell if Cohen’s strategy can win the game.
","source":"lsy1622643980725","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
No One Knows What Game Is GameStop Playing
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNo One Knows What Game Is GameStop Playing\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-17 14:12 GMT+8 IAM Newswire\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Last week, GameStop (NYSE: GME) surprisingly topped revenue estimates for its third quarter. However, the video game retailer widely missed analysts’ earnings guidance. Once again, it limited its earnings conference call to just management’s prepared remarks, without allowing Wall Street to ask any questions during a call that ended up being an eight-minute reading.\n\nThird quarter results- spending money to make money\nAlthough revenue rose 29% to just under $1.3 billion, coming close to its 2019 position when it generated $1.4 billion in sales, GameStop saw losses widen significantly in the period to $1.39 per share from $0.53, far worse than the $0.58 per share loss analysts were anticipating. Overall net loss grew to $105.4 million.\nExpenses jumped to $421.5 million which is expected as the company is investing heavily in being able to confront an online and digital future of gaming. Moreover, inventory rose to $1.14 billion as the company is stocked for the holidays as opposed to $861 million at the end of last year’s comparable quarter. However, it should be noted that Black Friday that tends to bring the peak demand isn’t included in these results.\nInfrastructure investments\nGameStop recently opened a new customer care facility in Florida for which it hired 500 employees. The facility has been presented as a key element of its future growth plans but it’s only one of several infrastructure investments the company has made recently, including two large fulfillment centers in Nevada and Pennsylvania or more precisely, additional 1 million square feet of warehouse space that is being stocked with merchandise. Considering the supply chain issues hampering other retailers, this spending is justified ahead of the holiday season. But the video gaming company still did not reveal its exact plans for all that space.\nGameStop is set to become the “Amazon of gaming”\nGameStop entered the year with three distribution facilities and added new fulfilment centers in York, Pennsylvania, and Reno, Nevada, along with the customer care center in Florida. Building out this massive footprint with Amazon-sized centers is essential to realizing chairman Ryan Cohen’s vision. So, while Cohen and CEO Matt Furlong aren’t saying it out loud as Furlong only teased GameStop has “been exploring emerging opportunities in blockchain, NFTs, and Web 3.0 gaming”, the company’s actions speak for themselves. It would have also been nice to hear more about its partnerships with Samsung, LG Display Co Ltd (NYSE: LPL), Razer Inc (OTC: RAZFF), Vizio Holding Group (NYSE: VZIO), Logitech (NASDAQ, LOGI) and Asus management previously teased.\nThe verdict\nGameStop is a company undergoing transformation from a brick-and-mortar chain into an e-commerce retailer. But this turnaround is taking place in an environment shaped by escalating costs that are causing the company to burn through twice as much cash compared to a year ago. Unfortunately, management is practically not any particular insight into what it is doing to engineer this business turnaround. That’s because the American consumer is a contrarian stock-market indicator. More often than not over the past four decades, large declines in consumer confidence have been followed by above-average stock market returns.
\n
This should come as a big relief for Wall Street bulls, who have otherwise been fretting about the University of Michigan index’s latest reading. From a July level of 81.2,the index fell last week to 70.2. That’s the lowest since December 2011 — lower even than the lowest reading registered in the darkest early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic.
\n
To appreciate how much this latest reading was unexpected, consider that the economists surveyed in advance by MarketWatch were predicting, on average, that the index would come in at 81.3 — a slight right rise from the July number.
\n
To analyze the significance of drops as big as this latest one, I calculated the correlations between monthly changes in the University of Michigan index since 1978 and the S&P 500’sSPX,+0.81%subsequent performance on both an inflation- and dividend-adjusted basis. I found that whenever this sentiment index dropped by at least 10 percentage points, the S&P 500 over the subsequent three months gained an average of 3.6%.
\n
That’s double the 1.7% average three-month gain following months in which the consumer sentiment index gained at least 10 percentage points. Moreover, as evident in the chart below, this contrast at the six-month horizon is even greater: 7.5% versus 2.6%.
\n
To be sure, there aren’t that many months since 1978 in which the consumer sentiment index rose or fell by this much. The inverse relationship between the sentiment index’s monthly changes and the U.S. stock market’s subsequent performance is only marginally statistically significant. So you should not use the occasion of the sentiment index’s big drop to throw caution to the wind.
\n
Nevertheless, if you want to believe that this historical relationship is statistically insignificant, you still can’t conclude that this most recent drop is a bad sign. You’d instead have to conclude that the University of Michigan index tells you nothing about the stock market’s prospects in coming months.
\n
So there you have it. Either this latest drop means nothing, or it is bullish. If you want to believe that this latest drop is bad news, you will have to base your argument on something other than U.S. stock market history since 1978.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
American consumers’ gray mood could put the S&P 500 in the green over the next 6 months
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAmerican consumers’ gray mood could put the S&P 500 in the green over the next 6 months\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-22 11:20 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Consumers’ sentiment is a contrarian indicator, so their current pessimism is bullish for stocks.\n\nLast week’s unexpected plunge in the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index is actually good...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".SPX":"S&P 500 Index",".DJI":"道琼斯","SPY":"标普500ETF",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite"},"source_url":"https://www.marketwatch.com/story/american-consumers-gray-mood-could-put-the-s-p-500-in-the-green-over-the-next-6-months-11629181914?mod=home-page","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1158638011","content_text":"Consumers’ sentiment is a contrarian indicator, so their current pessimism is bullish for stocks.\n\nLast week’s unexpected plunge in the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index is actually good news for U.S. stock investors. He cited October's impressive rally after the theatrical debuts of both \"James Bond\" and \"Dune.\"
\n
The company set a new box office record for the month (with one weekend left on the calendar) — crossing $100 million at the global box office, up significantly from its previous record of $84 million set in 2013.
\n
Gelfond predicted that the company will finish the month with $115 million in ticket sales, \"maybe a little more,\" ahead of the premieres of a full slate of fall-winter tentpoles like \"Eternals,\" \"Ghostbusters,\" \"Spiderman: No Way Home\" and \"The Matrix Resurrections.\"
\n
Even as the Delta variant wreaks havoc on retail and leisure traffic, the executive stressed that \"I think we've crossed the point of no return and we're on our way.\"
\n
An 'Enhanced' experience
\n
On the company earnings call, Gelfond said that IMAX is “in productive conversations with leading global streaming platforms” as the company continues to lean on IMAX Enhanced, a product that gets embedded in televisions to help the image \"look much better in the home.\"
\n
Yet \"the idea is not to replace anything in the theater...in no way is it comparable to the IMAX theatrical experience,\" Gelfond emphasized, saying the goal is for consumers to use this product after already seeing a film in theaters.
\n
\"It also saves some money in terms of the optimization in streaming, so there might be several things in there for the streamers and we've been having discussions for a fair amount of time now,\" he added.
\n
Wedbush analyst Alicia Reese said that IMAX Enhanced \"will take some time\" to catch on, explaining that it's a \"high-priced option\" in which the TV has to have the right sound and tech in order for the product to work.
\n
\"You're not going to have your Roku players able to play in this at a low-cost price point for entry, [but] over time this is is great for IMAX. He cited October's impressive rally after the theatrical debuts of both \"James Bond\" and \"Dune.\"\nThe company set a new box office record for the month (with one weekend left on the calendar) — crossing $100 million at the global box office, up significantly from its previous record of $84 million set in 2013.\nGelfond predicted that the company will finish the month with $115 million in ticket sales, \"maybe a little more,\" ahead of the premieres of a full slate of fall-winter tentpoles like \"Eternals,\" \"Ghostbusters,\" \"Spiderman: No Way Home\" and \"The Matrix Resurrections.\"\nEven as the Delta variant wreaks havoc on retail and leisure traffic, the executive stressed that \"I think we've crossed the point of no return and we're on our way.\"\nAn 'Enhanced' experience\nOn the company earnings call, Gelfond said that IMAX is “in productive conversations with leading global streaming platforms” as the company continues to lean on IMAX Enhanced, a product that gets embedded in televisions to help the image \"look much better in the home.\"\nYet \"the idea is not to replace anything in the theater...in no way is it comparable to the IMAX theatrical experience,\" Gelfond emphasized, saying the goal is for consumers to use this product after already seeing a film in theaters.\n\"It also saves some money in terms of the optimization in streaming, so there might be several things in there for the streamers and we've been having discussions for a fair amount of time now,\" he added.\nWedbush analyst Alicia Reese said that IMAX Enhanced \"will take some time\" to catch on, explaining that it's a \"high-priced option\" in which the TV has to have the right sound and tech in order for the product to work.\n\"You're not going to have your Roku players able to play in this at a low-cost price point for entry, [but] over time this is is great for IMAX. It's a high-margin business. It doesn't cost them much, and it gives them a position on both sides of the theatrical fence,\" she continued.\nOverall, the outlook for theaters remains largely positive post-pandemic.\nReese said she expects more consolidations, but also more upgrades (like new IMAX screens and other premium, large format displays) in order to help cinemas distinguish themselves from the at-home experience.\nThe analyst added that she also anticipates more collaborations and partnerships with streaming giants like Netflix (NFLX) — with at-home viewing boosted by COVID-19 restrictions.\n\"There's been a lot of progress...Even Netflix was showing some things for an exclusive window for a week or two in theaters during the pandemic [and] I think that they might be interested in doing that post-pandemic,\" she explained.\nIMAX shares are up nearly 11.5% year-to-date.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":220,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":108014984,"gmtCreate":1619960436448,"gmtModify":1634208870880,"author":{"id":"3581653518216493","authorId":"3581653518216493","name":"whoartthou","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/255e220c4fd45d829d979119233c8196","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581653518216493","authorIdStr":"3581653518216493"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nicee","listText":"Nicee","text":"Nicee","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/108014984","repostId":"1103106179","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":189,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":377273590,"gmtCreate":1619532925610,"gmtModify":1634211988261,"author":{"id":"3581653518216493","authorId":"3581653518216493","name":"whoartthou","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/255e220c4fd45d829d979119233c8196","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581653518216493","authorIdStr":"3581653518216493"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"How's
