Is Amazon stock a buy?</p>\n<p>Amazon's 30,000-square-foot stores, which will&nbsp;debut in California and Ohio, are less than one-third the size of Walmart's conventional outlets. They're about one-sixth the size of Walmart Supercenter stores.</p>\n<p>Walmart, the behemoth of brick-and-mortar discount stores, is dueling Amazon, the giant of online shopping, in a battle over the future of retail, e-commerce and grocery shopping.</p>\n<p>Much work remains for either company to win theAmazon vs. Walmart battle. Walmart needs to expand online operations while also managing 11,500 stores across 28 countries, of which 4,743 are in the U.S. It's in the process of redesigning 1,000 stores by the end of 2021. Its goal is to create a more streamlined and faster shopping experience for customers.</p>\n<p>At the same time, Amazon must continue its aggressive rollout of warehouse distribution centers and figure out its strategy for building physical stores.</p>\n<p>Amazon Is Making Critical Investments</p>\n<p>\"The key question from here is when/if does the current investment cycle drive evidence of share gains and margin leverage,\" RBC Capital Markets analyst Brad Erickson said in a note. \"Only time will tell, but in our view AMZN stock is making critical investments as consumers increasingly demand faster shipping which should at least maintain share gains while, importantly, growing gross profit dollars.\"</p>\n<p>Amazon reported&nbsp;third-quarter results&nbsp;on Oct. 28. Adjusted earnings fell 51% from the year-ago period to $6.12 a share. Analysts expected $8.92 a share. Revenue climbed 15% to $110.8 billion, below expectations of $111.6 billion.</p>\n<p>For its fourth quarter, Amazon forecast revenue in the range of $130 billion to $140 billion. That missed analyst estimates for $142 billion. Amazon forecast earnings before interest and taxes, called EBIT, of $1.5 billion, versus estimates of $8.1 billion.</p>\n<p>The company's cloud-computing unit, Amazon Web Services, reported revenue growth of 39% to $11.6 billion. That topped estimates for 35% cloud-computing growth.</p>\n<p>Cowen analyst John Blackledge recently raised his price target on Amazon stock to 4,500, from 4,300. He listed Amazon as one of the \"best ideas\" for 2022, in the mega-cap category.</p>\n<p><b>Amazon Introduces Numerous New Gadgets</b></p>\n<p>On Sept. 28, Amazon introduced aplethora of consumer electronics gadgets, including smart displays and a home robot, at a fall product launch event.</p>\n<p>The Seattle-based e-commerce giant unveiled several devices that leverage its Alexa voice assistant technology. They include theEcho Show 15smart display, which is designed to keep families organized, connected and entertained.</p>\n<p>Another Alexa-enabled device is Amazon's first robot, which is named&nbsp;Astro. The robot will act as a security guard, companion and mobile smart display. It brings together new advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensor technology, and voice and edge computing, the company said.</p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Amazon moved deeper into the television market with an&nbsp;all-new lineup of devices&nbsp;and its first Amazon-branded 4K smart TVs. The Amazon TV products go on sale in October. Amazon also introduced a 4K version of its Fire TV stick.</p>\n<p><b>Plenty Of Growth Opportunities</b></p>\n<p>Amazon entered 2021 with plenty of big growth opportunities. This included plans to expand its virtual health care program across the U.S. It is also expanding its prescription drug business.</p>\n<p>On March 17, Amazon announced that its telehealth pilot program, called Amazon Care, would expand to all of its U.S. employees and their families as well as other firms this summer. The program first launched at its Seattle headquarters 18 months ago.</p>\n<p>If Amazon can deliver more efficient health care services, the potential is enormous for fueling its growth engine — and by extension Amazon stock. Health care now comprises nearly a fifth of the U.S. economy.</p>\n<p>Amazon said the program enables workers to connect with medical professionals via chat or video conference, and connect patients with medical professionals. In addition, Amazon Care can dispatch a medical professional to a patient's home for additional care.</p>\n<p>Analysts at Jefferies give Amazon a buy rating and price target or 4,000.</p>\n<p>\"We believe low expectations following two consecutive guide-downs better positions AMZN for upside in the core retail business,\" according to a Jefferies report.</p>\n<p>\"We also see attractive growth at AWS and advertising, AMZN's two highest margin businesses, serving to more than offset near-term cost headwinds from labor shortages and supply chain disruption,\" it said.</p>\n<p><b>Tapping The Market For Prescription Drugs</b></p>\n<p>In addition, Amazon is tapping into the $350 billion market for prescription drugs. The company fired a big shot across the bow of drugstores and prescription drug wholesalers late last year when it&nbsp;launched Amazon Pharmacy. The new unit will offer Amazon Prime members discounts of up to 80% on generic drugs and 40% on brand medications.</p>\n<p>On May 26, Amazon announced it is acquiring&nbsp;iconic film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer&nbsp;for $8.45 billion, looking broadly expand its position in streaming video and increase the value of its Prime rewards program. The acquisition is Amazon's largest since buying Whole Foods for $13.7 billion in 2017.</p>\n<p>To get Amazon Prime, users pay an annual or monthly fee for the service and receive multiple perks. This includes free access to Amazon Video and Amazon Music. Walmart needs to expand online operations while also managing 11,500 stores across 28 countries, of which 4,743 are in the U.S. It's in the process of redesigning 1,000 stores by the end of 2021. Lucid&nbsp;delivered on its promises in 2021&nbsp;by expanding its manufacturing facility, going public and raising cash, entering mass production, and starting customer deliveries. Yet&nbsp;recent events, most notably a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) request for documents&nbsp;that was issued on Dec. 3&nbsp;and a controversial senior note offering, have taken a toll on Lucid stock of late.</p>\n<p>Despite the bad press, there's reason to believe Lucid could be a great stock to own over the long term. The timing of the senior note offering was fantastic for Lucid, which valued its stock at $54.78 per share (a 37% premium to its share price at the time of this writing). It also gives the company the cash needed to accelerate production, expand manufacturing capacity, and meet a customer demand that currently&nbsp;sits at over 17,000 reservations. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures for February spiked $1.64 or 2.3 percent at $72.76 a barrel.</p>\n<p>Closer to home, Singapore will release November numbers for consumer prices later today, with forecasts suggesting an increase 0.4 percent on month and 3.4 percent on year. That follows the 0.3 percent monthly increase and the 3.2 percent yearly gain in October. The Straits Times Index now sits just above the 3,085-point plateau and it may extend its gains on Wednesday.\nThe global forecast for the Asian markets remains positive on easing concerns about the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, plus support from crude oil prices. The European and U.S. markets were up and the Asian bourses are tipped to open in similar fashion.\nThe STI finished barely higher on Wednesday following gains from the financials and a mixed picture from the industrials.\nFor the day, the index picked up 2.43 points or 0.08 percent to finish at 3,087.51 after trading between 3,078.71 and 3,098.27. Volume was 844 million shares worth 696.8 million Singapore dollars. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures for February spiked $1.64 or 2.3 percent at $72.76 a barrel.\nCloser to home, Singapore will release November numbers for consumer prices later today, with forecasts suggesting an increase 0.4 percent on month and 3.4 percent on year. That follows the 0.3 percent monthly increase and the 3.2 percent yearly gain in October. Revenue soared 65% for&nbsp;its latest quarter, and even if you factor out needle-moving acquisitions, you still have a healthy organic top-line growth rate of 38% for the quarter.</p>\n<p>Developers lean on Twilio's platform to let users get more done without having to leave the app. From two-way communication without revealing either side's contact info -- like when you're chatting with your food-delivery driver or trying to book a holiday vacation rental home -- to simple things like resetting passwords, you're probably contributing to Twilio's growth without realizing it. There are now more than 250,000 developers as active Twilio customers, and they're spending 31% more on the platform than they were a year ago.</p>\n<p>Red ink is a problem, and investors are concerned enough about the losses to detract from the spectacular top-line gains that Twilio is producing in a booming niche. We're only going to be spending more time on smartphone apps, and with that comes the challenge for app developers to make sure they beef up their in-app communication solutions. Twilio's future is bright, even if the stock is now 41% below the all-time high it established earlier this year.</p>\n<p><b>Roku</b></p>\n<p>We're streaming a lot of video from the biggest screen in the house -- our smart TV -- and that's not going to change anytime soon. Roku is the top solution, available freely as the default operating system in 38% of the smart TVs sold in North America. Folks can also buy Roku dongles for as little as $20 that plug into their TVs for access to Roku's free-to-use platform.</p>\n<p>Business is strong. Platform revenue soared 82% in its latest quarter. Hardware sales haven't been as kind, and supply-chain constraints and rising costs on that front will linger into the year ahead. The audience continues to grow despite the hardware hiccups, thankfully due to its market leadership in factory-installed new TVs.</p>\n<p>Roku plays nice with thousands of streaming apps. It's had a few tense negotiations with media and tech giants to keep them on its hub -- more recently with YouTube and YouTube TV -- but they have&nbsp;always been resolved&nbsp;before starting to get in the way of user growth. Advertisers and providers of streaming apps know that they have to work with Roku if they want to reach younger audiences who aren't consuming traditional marketing outposts.</p>\n<p>Roku stock has fallen 54% from this year's summertime highs. This would be an alarming sight if we hadn't seen&nbsp;similar drawdowns&nbsp;before. The stock has fallen between 43% and 61% every year since going public in 2017, only to hit a fresh all-time high the following year. Roku is the top dog among streaming video hubs for TVs, commanding nearly double the U.S. market share of its closest competitor.\nYou're probably going to spend a lot of time on mobile apps and streaming video in the future, making the recent sell-off in Twilio and Roku that much more appetizing. Even if you have just $2,000 to invest, let's go over why splitting that between Twilio and Roku may be the right choice right now.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nTwilio\nTwilio shares have fallen by more than 40% since peaking in February, but it's not as if its business is suffering a similar fate. Revenue soared 65% for its latest quarter, and even if you factor out needle-moving acquisitions, you still have a healthy organic top-line growth rate of 38% for the quarter.\nDevelopers lean on Twilio's platform to let users get more done without having to leave the app. From two-way communication without revealing either side's contact info -- like when you're chatting with your food-delivery driver or trying to book a holiday vacation rental home -- to simple things like resetting passwords, you're probably contributing to Twilio's growth without realizing it. There are now more than 250,000 developers as active Twilio customers, and they're spending 31% more on the platform than they were a year ago.\nRed ink is a problem, and investors are concerned enough about the losses to detract from the spectacular top-line gains that Twilio is producing in a booming niche. We're only going to be spending more time on smartphone apps, and with that comes the challenge for app developers to make sure they beef up their in-app communication solutions. Twilio's future is bright, even if the stock is now 41% below the all-time high it established earlier this year.\nRoku\nWe're streaming a lot of video from the biggest screen in the house -- our smart TV -- and that's not going to change anytime soon. Roku is the top solution, available freely as the default operating system in 38% of the smart TVs sold in North America. Folks can also buy Roku dongles for as little as $20 that plug into their TVs for access to Roku's free-to-use platform.\nBusiness is strong. Platform revenue soared 82% in its latest quarter. We all assume December is the best month, but November is actually better and gets very little fanfare.”</p>\n<p>This raises several red flags. Why choose the period since 1950, as opposed to, say, 1960 or 1940? Why focus on just the past 10- or 20 years and not the past 13 or 23 or 27?</p>\n<p>Unless there is a compelling theoretical reason to focus on a subset of the historical data, doing so suggests that deliberate data mining is going on.</p>\n<p>The Dow offers investors monthly data extending back to its creation in May 1896. Over the ensuing 125 years, November’s average return ranks 5th&nbsp;for all years, as you can see in the chart below. November is slightly above average, but not at the 95% confidence level that statisticians often use when determining if a pattern is genuine. In fact, it isn’t even close.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/81a13b9bba8ec5e47cf1c0ed3172447f\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"471\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>How about November being the second-best month in post-presidential election years? Again, this is true for only <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> subset of the historical data. Viewed over the Dow’s entire history, November is in 6th&nbsp;place for average performance during post-presidential election years. In other words, its performance rank in such years is actually slightly worse than in the entire sample.</p>\n<p>I don’t mean to pick on this particular well-known Wall Street CIO, which is why I am not naming him. He actually is in good company.</p>\n<p><b>Playing the odds</b></p>\n<p>There’s an even more fundamental problem with this data mining, beyond their lack of statistical significance: To get historical odds reasonably in your favor when betting on a seasonal pattern, you would have to bet on it consistently many times in a row — several dozen at a minimum. So when betting on a pattern that comes around only once every year, the intelligent bet lasts several decades. The odds of success in any given year are only barely above a coin flip.</p>\n<p>In all Novembers since 1896, for example, the Dow has risen 63% of the time. Even assuming the future will be like the past, a bet that the stock market will gain ground in November will be wrong slightly more than one out of every three years. That’s far too much risk to justify throwing caution to the wind.</p>\n<p>Ideally, from a statistical point of view, you can find statistically significant patterns that are extremely short term. That would allow you, with even a relatively brief holding period, to bet on those patterns a sufficient number of times to get the odds decently in your favor.</p>\n<p>This, for example, is the secret behind the phenomenally successful Medallion Fund, from Renaissance Technologies, which (even after fees) beat the S&amp;P 500SPX,+0.37%between 1988 and 2018 by the incredible margin of 39.2% annualized return to 10.0%. (The fund is not available to outside investors.)</p>\n<p>Brad Cornell, a professor emeritus at UCLA, reportsthat the odds of success of any of Medallion Fund’s individual trades have been 50.75%, only slightly higher than 50%. But when coupled with high-frequency trading, those odds are enough to produce a highly profitable strategy. Medallion’s “strategy involved constantly opening and covering thousands of short-term positions, both long and short… Taken over millions of trades that [50.75%] percentage allowed the firm to make billions,” Cornell wrote.</p>\n<p>Remember this the next time you read about an alleged seasonal pattern in the stock market. Dr. Anthony Fauci, White House chief medical officer and a trusted expert on the virus, stated yesterday that some clear preliminary data was finally starting to emerge on the severity of the new variant and that so far, the results looked“encouraging.”\nWhat’s Happening With Vaccine Stocks\nSince news of the new variant first began dominating media airwaves, vaccine producers have been scrambling to be the first to address the new Covid-19 strain that threatened to undo the work that sent their stocks up earlier this year. Today has seen all the prominent names among vaccine stocks plunge across the board. While this isn’t strictly due to Dr. Fauci’s comments, it’s possible that the demand for new vaccine innovations and treatments may not be as great as we feared only a few days ago.\nBioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) has suffered the worst declines of the day among vaccine stocks, with shares down almost 19% as of this writing. Next in line is Moderna(NASDAQ:MRNA), which has fallen more than 13%. Then, Novavax’s(NASDAQ:NVAX)declines come in just shy of 12%. Rounding out the pack is Pfizer(NYSE:PFE), which is in the red by just over 5% as trading winds to a close today.\nWhy It Matters\nThe clearest indication we should take from today’s events is that market mentality is shifting. This is evidenced by the performances we’ve seen not just from vaccine stocks but from other sectors that were differently affected by the spreading variant news. As InvestorPlace’s Shrey Dua reports, cruise ship stocks such as Royal Caribbean(NYSE:RCL) and Carnival(NYSE:CCL) are back in the green today after a troubling week of variant concerns. The same can be said for airline stocks, as names such as Delta (NYSE:DAL) and Southwest (NYSE:LUV) have gained some altitude today.\nOf course, it’s too soon to tell what the future will look like. The preliminary results upon which Dr. Fauci commented are exactly that — preliminary. Scientists and medical researchers still have plenty of research to do before they will be able outline a bigger picture. Dr. Fauci was careful to add that while there does not seem to be a “great degree of severity” to the spreading variant, it is still too early for any definitive conclusions to be reached. Omicron is still very much a variant of concern.\nWhat It Means\nEven if the variant does not end up posing as serious a threat to highly vaccinated countries as has been speculated, the need for vaccines isn’t going to go away. Fear of the variant has spiked demand for vaccinations in the U.S., and many countries are still struggling to get more of their populations partially or fully vaccinated. The industry landscape may not end up looking quite as bleak close to home as some of us have feared. However, that doesn’t mean that the demand for vaccines won’t be increasing throughout the months ahead.\nThis news certainly doesn’t mean that a bearish play on vaccine stocks is advisable. Far from it, in fact. Novavax has an important catalyst rapidly approaching as the World Health Organization (WHO) considers granting it emergency use authorization. Retail giant <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TGT\">Target</a>&nbsp;warned of higher costs earlier this week.</p>\n<p>New York Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams said Thursday that inflation is becoming more broad-based and that expectations for future price increases are rising.</p>\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI)&nbsp;fell 60.1 points, or 0.17%, to 35,870.95, the S&amp;P 500(.SPX)gained 15.87 points, or 0.34%, to 4,704.54 and the Nasdaq Composite(.IXIC)&nbsp;added 72.14 points, or 0.45%, to 15,993.71.</p>\n<p>The pan-European STOXX 600 index(.STOXX)lost 0.46% and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe(.MIWD00000PUS)gained 0.03%.</p>\n<p>Turkey's lira shed another 2.83% after its central bank cut rates by 100 basis points to 15%, even in the face of inflation near 20%, sending the Turkish currency hurtling southward.</p>\n<p>\"The lira remains a punching bag, and further weakness has no end in sight,\" said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda.</p>\n<p>The lira has lost around 11.5% of its value this month amid President Tayyip Erdogan's renewed criticism of interest rates and calls for stimulus despite the risks. It was last at 10.909, having earlier hit a record low of 11.30 per dollar.</p>\n<p>The dollar edged back from a 16-month high as traders weighed whether the U.S. currency's recent surge had gone too far.</p>\n<p>The dollar index , which measures the currency against a basket of six rivals, was last down 0.3%.</p>\n<p>In the U.S. Treasury market, yields fell after the relative success of a 20-year bond auction on Wednesday reduced fears about further rapid yield increases.</p>\n<p>Benchmark 10-year notes were last at 1.587%.
