Wall Street’s assessment suggests that the stock price may have moved ahead of fundamentals, as MRNA has gained more than 1,200% since the COVID-19 pandemic started.</p>\n<p>The most recent report on Moderna stock came from Piper Sandler’s Edward Tenthoff, who&nbsp;reiterated&nbsp;his buy recommendation and forecasted a $348 price target on the back of Omicron news. The analyst sees the company prepared for the emergence of new variants and \"ideally suited to rapidly swap in new versions of the Spike antigen\" to make new COVID-19 vaccines.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley’s Matthew Harrison&nbsp;reiterated&nbsp;his neutral rating on MRNA a week ago with a $313 price target. The analyst mentioned that the announcement of Moderna’s flu vaccine data before year-end could be a positive catalyst for the stock. If the results are positive, the market could price in about $10 billion in long-term flu and COVID vaccine revenue, bumping shares by 10%.</p>\n<p><b>Pfizer: moderate buy, but experts are skeptical</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street is currently bullish on Pfizer, based on stock ratings. However, average price target consensus suggests that valuations could be stretched thin, following the November rally. PFE has a moderate buy recommendation based on 13 reports and a $50 average price target.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan‘s Chris Schott&nbsp;raised&nbsp;the firm's price target on Pfizer to $53 from $42 and kept a neutral rating. Covid remains a focal point of the Pfizer story, and Comirnaty and Paxlovid sales are \"set to clearly exceed expectations”. While the analyst sees limited upside from the company's core business, he would not be surprised to see shares rally in the near-term on omicron headlines.</p>\n<p>The most recent update on PFE came from Mizuho Securities’ Vamil Divan. He is&nbsp;skeptical&nbsp;on Pfizer stock and sees 16% downside risk. But according to the analyst, Omicron may increase near-term demand for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, especially for booster doses.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street Memes’ take</b></p>\n<p>COVID-19 vaccine makers may naturally benefit in the near-term from Omicron fears. Both companies have strong vaccine pipelines and technology, but Moderna likely benefits from the current pandemic for being more of a pure-play stock.</p>\n<p>Due to business model diversification, we see MRNA as a better short-term bet on COVID-19 developments. However, for this same reason and due to richer 2023 P/E of 32x, the stock is likely to be more volatile and present higher downside risk. Markets have been climbing to all-time highs even as yields for long-dated Treasurys were receding, suggesting that doubts remain about the economic outlook.</p>\n<p>The yield for the 10-year Treasury note was hovering just below 1.60%, after climbing over 5 basis points, while the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite indexes touched record intraday highs on Monday, the start of a historically solid period for equities in the week of Thanksgiving.</p>\n<p>On top of that, the Fed appears split about monetary-policy next steps, with some advocating for a go-slow approach to tapering and interest-rate raises, while others have been championing a faster rate of normalization moves to beat back inflation. But there are at least three reasons, all supported by investment experts and the Apple Maven, that suggest that buying AAPL now may be the right move.</p>\n<p>Today, the Apple Maven looks at what I consider to be the three key pillars of the short-term bullish case on the Cupertino-based company’s stock.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a988efddcce991fe9a4da989de37cf2\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"827\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 1: Apple logo.</span></p>\n<p><b>#1. Selloff is not about Apple</b></p>\n<p>Few will argue that Apple’s quick 10% drop from the September 7 all-time high had anything to do with the company’s fundamentals. In fact,as I have recently presented, the core of Apple’s business has been in great shape: the iPhone 13 is proving to be a bigger deal than many previously expected.</p>\n<p>Evidence that Apple’s performance is very likely unrelated to the recent share price decline can also be found in analysts’ expectations. Over the past 90 days, while AAPL price stayed flat at around $140 per share, 2021 EPS projections climbed more than 40 cents. Apply a conservative earnings multiple of 25 times to this delta, and we are looking at over $10 in per-share value that never materialized.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f06a897cf92907ec889996f34932ed22\" tg-width=\"878\" tg-height=\"223\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 2: AAPL EPS trend.</span></p>\n<p>If the recent pullback in AAPL happened despite deterioration in fundamentals, then I find it reasonable to expect Apple stock to rebound in the foreseeable future. This also seems to be the opinion of Wedbush’s Dan Ives, who recently&nbsp;said&nbsp;the following:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “We continue to believe this pressure on the tech sector is short-lived with our belief that tech stocks will be up 10%+ into year-end. The tech growth stories are being massively underestimated by the Street in our opinion, with 3Q earnings a major positive catalyst for the tech sector looking ahead.”\n</blockquote>\n<p><b>#2. History says “buy dips”</b></p>\n<p>I have&nbsp;repeatedly reminded readers&nbsp;that Apple stock is a better buy after a pullback. The chart below shows that, the larger the drawdown, the higher forward one-year returns tend to be. While the current 10% pullback is not quite a large one by historical standards, it is about as much as Apple stock has corrected since March 2021.</p>\n<p>The buy-the-dip idea is&nbsp;shared&nbsp;by venture capitalist Jim Breyer. He has recently said that “for the last two years, when the mega-cap tech stocks have sold off significantly, I'm a buyer”. He believes that Big Tech, Apple included, are the best companies in the world. Therefore, why not buy equity in them when their shares go on sale?</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9ce05b10f126efc9201e0ee1141711c6\" tg-width=\"684\" tg-height=\"408\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 3: Average one-year return on AAPL, by strategy.</span></p>\n<p><b>#3. Seasonality improves in October</b></p>\n<p>Maybe surprising to those who subscribe to the efficient market theory, Apple share price tends to follow a seasonal pattern. Since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007, the stock performs well early in the summer, but sells off in September. This is probably the case because investors “buy the rumors” ahead of the late September iPhone launch, and “sell the news” in the last week of Q3.</p>\n<p>The better news is that October tends to be a rebound month. The chart below shows that the historical returns for October, since 2007, has been nearly 4%. This number represents a compelling annualized gain of 56% that is much better than Apple’s own monthly average, let alone the S&amp;P 500’s.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6010d23d62d67b502ecf464bcd4b535d\" tg-width=\"718\" tg-height=\"428\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 4: AAPL average monthly returns since 2007.</span></p>\n<p>To be fair, seasonality deteriorates during the holiday season (sell-the-news-pressures again?), only to recover viciously in the first few months of the new year. The Apple Maven presents three reasons why shares may climb from here in the foreseeable future.\nAs Apple stock dips to just north of $140 apiece, many may feel uneasy holding shares when momentum is so unfavorable. But there are at least three reasons, all supported by investment experts and the Apple Maven, that suggest that buying AAPL now may be the right move.\nToday, the Apple Maven looks at what I consider to be the three key pillars of the short-term bullish case on the Cupertino-based company’s stock.\nFigure 1: Apple logo.\n#1. Selloff is not about Apple\nFew will argue that Apple’s quick 10% drop from the September 7 all-time high had anything to do with the company’s fundamentals. In fact,as I have recently presented, the core of Apple’s business has been in great shape: the iPhone 13 is proving to be a bigger deal than many previously expected.\nEvidence that Apple’s performance is very likely unrelated to the recent share price decline can also be found in analysts’ expectations. Over the past 90 days, while AAPL price stayed flat at around $140 per share, 2021 EPS projections climbed more than 40 cents. Apply a conservative earnings multiple of 25 times to this delta, and we are looking at over $10 in per-share value that never materialized.\nFigure 2: AAPL EPS trend.\nIf the recent pullback in AAPL happened despite deterioration in fundamentals, then I find it reasonable to expect Apple stock to rebound in the foreseeable future. This also seems to be the opinion of Wedbush’s Dan Ives, who recently said the following:\n\n “We continue to believe this pressure on the tech sector is short-lived with our belief that tech stocks will be up 10%+ into year-end. The tech growth stories are being massively underestimated by the Street in our opinion, with 3Q earnings a major positive catalyst for the tech sector looking ahead.”\n\n#2. History says “buy dips”\nI have repeatedly reminded readers that Apple stock is a better buy after a pullback. The chart below shows that, the larger the drawdown, the higher forward one-year returns tend to be. While the current 10% pullback is not quite a large one by historical standards, it is about as much as Apple stock has corrected since March 2021.\nThe buy-the-dip idea is shared by venture capitalist Jim Breyer. He has recently said that “for the last two years, when the mega-cap tech stocks have sold off significantly, I'm a buyer”. He believes that Big Tech, Apple included, are the best companies in the world. Seasonality improves in October\nMaybe surprising to those who subscribe to the efficient market theory, Apple share price tends to follow a seasonal pattern. Since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007, the stock performs well early in the summer, but sells off in September. This is probably the case because investors “buy the rumors” ahead of the late September iPhone launch, and “sell the news” in the last week of Q3.\nThe better news is that October tends to be a rebound month. The chart below shows that the historical returns for October, since 2007, has been nearly 4%. This number represents a compelling annualized gain of 56% that is much better than Apple’s own monthly average, let alone the S&P 500’s.\nFigure 4: AAPL average monthly returns since 2007.\nTo be fair, seasonality deteriorates during the holiday season (sell-the-news-pressures again?), only to recover viciously in the first few months of the new year. New variant Omicron has renewed fears worldwide about a new health and economic crisis, since little is still known about how this variant affects vaccinated and non-vaccinated people.</p>\n<p>The stock market sold off on Friday, November 26, after Omicron news hit the wire. The S&amp;P 500&nbsp;dropped 2% amid uncertainty. One of the few gainers was Moderna stock, which jumped 20% on Friday’s trading session, while Pfizer stock&nbsp;was up a more modest 2.5%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b55d87c377ec124bb84173bfb955b9fa\" tg-width=\"689\" tg-height=\"621\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 1: SPY, MRNA and PFE performance in the past 5-trading days.</span></p>\n<p>Between two of the main COVID-19 vaccine makers, we assess Moderna and Pfizer stocks and ask ourselves: which is a better buy as Omicron fear lingers?</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street is neutral on Moderna</b></p>\n<p>Moderna stock currently has a hold consensus among 13 analysts and an average price target of $298, which suggests 17% downside from current levels. Wall Street’s assessment suggests that the stock price may have moved ahead of fundamentals, as MRNA has gained more than 1,200% since the COVID-19 pandemic started.</p>\n<p>The most recent report on Moderna stock came from Piper Sandler’s Edward Tenthoff, who&nbsp;reiterated&nbsp;his buy recommendation and forecasted a $348 price target on the back of Omicron news. The analyst sees the company prepared for the emergence of new variants and \"ideally suited to rapidly swap in new versions of the Spike antigen\" to make new COVID-19 vaccines.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley’s Matthew Harrison&nbsp;reiterated&nbsp;his neutral rating on MRNA a week ago with a $313 price target. The analyst mentioned that the announcement of Moderna’s flu vaccine data before year-end could be a positive catalyst for the stock. If the results are positive, the market could price in about $10 billion in long-term flu and COVID vaccine revenue, bumping shares by 10%.</p>\n<p><b>Pfizer: moderate buy, but experts are skeptical</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street is currently bullish on Pfizer, based on stock ratings. However, average price target consensus suggests that valuations could be stretched thin, following the November rally. PFE has a moderate buy recommendation based on 13 reports and a $50 average price target.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan‘s Chris Schott&nbsp;raised&nbsp;the firm's price target on Pfizer to $53 from $42 and kept a neutral rating. Covid remains a focal point of the Pfizer story, and Comirnaty and Paxlovid sales are \"set to clearly exceed expectations”. While the analyst sees limited upside from the company's core business, he would not be surprised to see shares rally in the near-term on omicron headlines.</p>\n<p>The most recent update on PFE came from Mizuho Securities’ Vamil Divan. He is&nbsp;skeptical&nbsp;on Pfizer stock and sees 16% downside risk. But according to the analyst, Omicron may increase near-term demand for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, especially for booster doses.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street Memes’ take</b></p>\n<p>COVID-19 vaccine makers may naturally benefit in the near-term from Omicron fears. Moderna, for instance, has risen more than 1,200% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, while Pfizer stock has climbed 79% during the same period.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/198c43532bf2d097bc94e078b539a044\" tg-width=\"684\" tg-height=\"577\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 2: MRNA and PFE performance in the past 5-years.</span></p>\n<p>Pfizer is much larger than Moderna, with a market cap size of $300 billion compared to Moderna’s $133 billion. Lael Brainard, who was viewed by analysts as potentially more dovish on inflation. Biden nominated Brainard to a term as vice chairwoman, succeeding Richard Clarida, whose term as the central bank's No. 2 official expires on Jan. 31.</p>\n<p>\"Both were great candidates but sticking with Powell provided valuable continuity as the Fed seeks to implement its new framework and continue to put employment alongside price stability as a core mandate,\" said Kathryn Judge, a professor at Columbia Law School. \"Particularly with recent price increases and growing concerns about inflation, there are benefits from standing by a trusted and widely respected leader.\"</p>\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average , the S&amp;P 500 index and the Nasdaq Composite Index were all trading at or near records.</p>\n<p>\"The reappointment of Chairman Powell is a very positive development for markets and the economy because it provides continuity at a critical time,\" wrote Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance, in emailed comments.</p>\n<p>Powell's nomination also comes as the Fed has begun to taper its monthly purchases of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities, on a timetable to wind down the program by June. Many also are anticipating that the Fed also might look to raise rates two or three times in 2022 as it attempts to rein in the surge in inflation and normalize interest rates in the aftermath of the worst pandemic in over a century.</p>\n<p>\"The economy is experiencing an increase in inflation and the Fed has already taken steps to reduce their extraordinary stimulus measures (tapering), but they will need to move more quickly in addressing the inflation threats so that they don't become entrenched,\" Zaccarelli writes.</p>\n<p>The nominations end months of uncertainty and speculation about the leadership of the Fed at what is viewed as a crucial time in the recovery phase of the economy. Markets have been climbing to all-time highs even as yields for long-dated Treasurys were receding, suggesting that doubts remain about the economic outlook.</p>\n<p>The yield for the 10-year Treasury note was hovering just below 1.60%, after climbing over 5 basis points, while the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite indexes touched record intraday highs on Monday, the start of a historically solid period for equities in the week of Thanksgiving.</p>\n<p>On top of that, the Fed appears split about monetary-policy next steps, with some advocating for a go-slow approach to tapering and interest-rate raises, while others have been championing a faster rate of normalization moves to beat back inflation. The pace of consumer inflation over the past year marched to 6.2% in October from 5.4% in the prior month. That is more than triple the Federal Reserve's 2% target and is the highest rate since November 1990.</p>\n<p>The outlook for inflation seems uncertain, with some betting that pricing pressures will intensify, while others are making the case that inflation is in the process of peaking.</p>\n<p>For his part, Powell has been viewed by supporters within the administration as a steady hand, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, describing him as helping \"restore bipartisan support for the central bank one decade after its reputation was badly bruised by the 2008 financial crisis.\"</p>\n<p>\"I have full confidence after their trial by fire over the last 20 months that Chair Powell and Dr. Brainard will provide the strong leadership our country needs,\" Biden said in a statement.</p>\n<p>The Senate is expected to confirm Powell, 68, before his first term expires in February.</p>\n<p>The Journal report said that putting Brainard as the Fed No. 2 represents a compromise for Biden with progressives in his party who had criticized Powell. Indeed, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, accused Powell of watering down financial safeguards put in place after the panic of 2008 and called him a \"dangerous man.\"</p>\n<p>Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist for LPL Financial, Powell's renomination represents \"one less worry now,\" for markets participants.</p>\n<p>Jeff Klingelhofer, co-head of investments at Thornburg Investment Management, said that \"with elevating inflation concerns on just about everyone's mind, Brainard would have been more difficult for the market to digest as chair.\"</p>\n<p>\"Her appointment to vice chair offers Democrats a ballast to Powell and a likely regulatory win,\" he wrote, in emailed remarks.</p>\n<p>Biden will still oversee three other nominations for the Fed, including a replacement for Federal Reserve Gov. Randal Quarles, after a number of members announcement early retirements. Quarles said that he would resign at the end of December.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Powell's pick is likely to be a positive for digital assets like bitcoin , which the central banker has said that he would not move to restrict.
