( NASDAQ:MU ) are up 8% in pre-market trade after the company reported first quarter 2022 results. The results were better than expected across the board and the company also raised guidance for the current quarter which ends in February. Micron has underperformed this year relative to other semiconductor stocks, and there has been a disconnect between the share price and the earnings some analysts are forecasting.
\n
These results suggest the market may be underestimating Micron’s potential for 2022.
\n
First quarter results highlights:
\n
\n
Normalized EPS of $2.16 were $0.05 better than expected and up 176% YoY.
\n
GAAP EPS of $2.04 were $0.02 better than expected and up 187% YoY
\n
Revenue of $7.69 bln was better than expected and 33% higher than a year ago.
\n
Second quarter revenue guidance rose to $7.5 bln (vs consensus of $7.32 bln) and EPS guidance rose from $1.86 to $1.95.
\n
Sales were driven by strong demand from datacenters and other data intensive industries.
\n
\n
How do these results stack up against Micron’s P/E ratio?
\n
Micron’s price-to-earnings (or \"P/E\") ratio was 15.7x before these results were published. This is directly in line with the median US company, and implies investors felt somewhat indifferent to the company’s growth prospects.
\n
View our latest analysis for Micron Technology
\n
NasdaqGS:MU Price Based on Past Earnings December 21st 2021
\n
Does Growth Match The P/E?
\n
The current P/E ratio appears at odds with the company’s earnings growth over the last year. However, there have been some concerns about potential oversupply in the memory market in 2022 - we covered these concerns here .
\n
On average, over the next few years analysts are expecting to see earnings growth of 19%. However, there is a lot of disparity within that number. Most analysts agree that growth will be strong next year, but taper off over the following years. This implies the forward P/E to August 2023 is between 5x and 10x.
\n
What We Can Learn From Micron Technology's P/E?
\n
Micron’s results (and the commentary that went with it) may point to better than expected 2022. If the company can outperform the average estimates, the growth rates will be well ahead of the market, and the current and forward price to earnings ratios look quite low.
\n
The caveat here is that Micron operates in a cyclical industry. This implies Amazon Logistics will likely ship 66% of the volume of Amazon in the U.S., he added.
\n
Amazon Logistics, the analyst said, can improve Amazon's shipping efficiency and lower shipping costs per unit. The logistics arm may have enough capacity by 2023 to move 75% of Amazon's U.S. volumes as well as another 22% of non-Amazon U.S. e-commerce volumes, according to the analyst.
\n
Even if Amazon moves only 15% of non-Amazon e-commerce volumes by 2023, it could generate an incremental $1.4 billion of EBIT in 2023, Nowak said.
\n
Implications For FedEx, UPS:This marks another key inflection point in the competitive dynamics in the industry, Nowak said.
\n
\"What was once a UPS/FDX 'duopoly' had to contend with the swift rise of the USPS in the last decade and now AMZL is potentially soon to be the largest parcel carrier in the country,\" the analyst wrote in the note.
\n
FedEx Corporation and UPS could suffer from a reduction in potential leverage with customers if there are emerging alternatives, the analyst said.
\n
Insourcing risk is increased, particularly for UPS, where Amazon accounts for 13% of the total revenues and a significantly higher percentage of U.S. volumes, Nowak warned. If Amazon Logistics is ramping up capacity at this pace, it should be in a position to insource the bulk of its volumes soon, he added.
\n
Additionally, the capacity growth also lines up Amazon Logistics to potentially become a 3P competitor in the U.S., Nowak said.
\n
AMZN Price Action:Amazon shares were edging down 0.18% to $3,437.36 at market close Thursday.
","source":"lsy1606299360108","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; This implies Amazon Logistics will likely ship 66% of the volume of Amazon in the U.S., he added.\nAmazon Logistics, the analyst said, can improve Amazon's shipping efficiency and lower shipping costs per unit. The logistics arm may have enough capacity by 2023 to move 75% of Amazon's U.S. volumes as well as another 22% of non-Amazon U.S. e-commerce volumes, according to the analyst.\nEven if Amazon moves only 15% of non-Amazon e-commerce volumes by 2023, it could generate an incremental $1.4 billion of EBIT in 2023, Nowak said.\nImplications For FedEx, UPS:This marks another key inflection point in the competitive dynamics in the industry, Nowak said.\n\"What was once a UPS/FDX 'duopoly' had to contend with the swift rise of the USPS in the last decade and now AMZL is potentially soon to be the largest parcel carrier in the country,\" the analyst wrote in the note.\nFedEx Corporation and UPS could suffer from a reduction in potential leverage with customers if there are emerging alternatives, the analyst said.\nInsourcing risk is increased, particularly for UPS, where Amazon accounts for 13% of the total revenues and a significantly higher percentage of U.S. volumes, Nowak warned. If Amazon Logistics is ramping up capacity at this pace, it should be in a position to insource the bulk of its volumes soon, he added.\nAdditionally, the capacity growth also lines up Amazon Logistics to potentially become a 3P competitor in the U.S., Nowak said.\nAMZN Price Action:Amazon shares were edging down 0.18% to $3,437.36 at market close Thursday.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AMZN":0.9,"FDX":0.9,"UPS":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":843,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":873869145,"gmtCreate":1636929369920,"gmtModify":1636929369989,"author":{"id":"3584080198432460","authorId":"3584080198432460","name":"6b134308","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584080198432460","authorIdStr":"3584080198432460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/873869145","repostId":"1103944030","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":331,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":848638541,"gmtCreate":1635993395218,"gmtModify":1635993395422,"author":{"id":"3584080198432460","authorId":"3584080198432460","name":"6b134308","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584080198432460","authorIdStr":"3584080198432460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/848638541","repostId":"2180636457","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":292,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":852517593,"gmtCreate":1635291133906,"gmtModify":1635291134075,"author":{"id":"3584080198432460","authorId":"3584080198432460","name":"6b134308","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584080198432460","authorIdStr":"3584080198432460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/852517593","repostId":"2178840791","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":220,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":690830126,"gmtCreate":1639652701044,"gmtModify":1639652701244,"author":{"id":"3584080198432460","authorId":"3584080198432460","name":"6b134308","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584080198432460","authorIdStr":"3584080198432460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/690830126","repostId":"1184616731","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1184616731","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1639650290,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1184616731?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-12-16 18:24","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"Stocks Set to Extend Gains Ahead of More Central Bank Decisions","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1184616731","media":"WSJ","summary":"Stocks were poised to extend gains ahead of policy decisions by the European Central Bank and Bank o","content":"
Stocks were poised to extend gains ahead of policy decisions by the European Central Bank and Bank of England, which follow the Federal Reserve’s pivot toward higher interest rates.
\n
Futures for the S&P 500 rose 0.5% Thursday, a day after the broad stocks gauge closed at its second-highest level on record.
