Additionally, BlackBerry’s systems will enhance the attractiveness of an acquirer’s products…by making them more secure and private.”</p>\n<p>Perhaps I’m missing something. Isn’t BlackBerry still losing money? And if the QNX operating system was so vital to Google’s business, I am sure that Alphabet would already have acquired BlackBerry.</p>\n<p>It doesn’t seem like sensible capital allocation for Alphabet to pay billions of dollars to acquire BlackBerry when it can give the Canadian company a lifeline by choosing to work with it on Android Automotive.</p>\n<p>In the end, Alphabet may buy BlackBerry.However, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Here’s why.</p>\n<p>BB Stock Is Up 113% Over the Past Year</p>\n<p>Although BB stock is up 120% over the past 12 months, it’s traded between $10 and $15 for most of 2021.</p>\n<p>In mid-September, before BlackBerry reported less-than-stellar fiscal second-quarter results,<i>InvestorPlace</i>&nbsp;contributor&nbsp;Ian Bezek argued that there was&nbsp;little evidence&nbsp;to point to a turnaround by the company.</p>\n<p>Except for its Internet of Things (IoT) applications, including its QNX operating system, there was little at BlackBerry to justify its hefty valuation,, Bezek said.</p>\n<p>So let’s consider itsQ2 results.</p>\n<p>Its three operating segments combined delivered a 32.4% decrease in revenue — $175 million compared to $259 million — over the same period a year earlier.</p>\n<p>The revenue of the company’s cybersecurity business was flat year-over-year at $120 million. The unit accounted for 69% of the company’s overall sales. The sales of its QNX-dominated IoT unit, which Bezek thought was a bright spot in an otherwise terrible situation , generated a year-over-year sales increase of 29%, with its top line reaching $40 million. However, its licensing and other segment had just $15 million in revenue in the quarter, down from $108 million a year earlier.</p>\n<p>Segment Revenue for All of 2022</p>\n<p>According to BlackBerry’s Q2 10-Q report, the company says it expects its cybersecurity unit to generate modest sequential growth for the final two quarters. Let’s assume 5% sequential growth each quarter. That translates to $126 million in Q3 and $132 million in Q4, resulting in a full-year total of $485.3 million.</p>\n<p>As for IoT, its revenue climbed 23% over the first half of the year, to $83 million. So let’s assume that it generates $166 million in 2021 . That brings us to $651.3 million in full-year revenue from two out of the company’s three segments.</p>\n<p>Finally, its licensing and other segment, which includes its patent portfolio, is expected to generate $60 million in 2022, down from its original guidance of $100 million.</p>\n<p>That would bring the company’s revenue this year to $711.3 million. Last year, its top line was$893 million. If my estimates prove to be correct, BlackBerry’s revenues will have declined over 31.6% since 2018.</p>\n<p>And, based on my estimates, the IoT segment would only account for 23% of the company’s overall revenue.</p>\n<p>The Bottom Line</p>\n<p>Why would Alphabet or Qualcomm pay $6.2 billion for BlackBerry when they could only immediately utilize the IoT segment, which I expect to generate $166 million of revenue this year? That’s a price-sales multiple of 37 times.</p>\n<p>It’s true that a purchase price of $6.2 billion would value the entire company at eight times sales, based on my estimate. But then the acquirer would have to spend time extracting the necessary value from BlackBerry’s cybersecurity and patent portfolio segments to justify the multiple.</p>\n<p>I don’t think that will happen because, in order to stay in business, BlackBerry will gladly sell Google the QNX Hypervisor software needed to run the Android Automotive operating system.</p>\n<p>From my vantage point, BlackBerry is in no position to reel in such a significant buyer. But its fiscal&nbsp;Q1 showed a loss of $35 million in FCF. This didn’t do anything to help BB stock. If fell from a near-term peak of $15.88 on June 3 (before the June 24 Q1 results) to $9.56 on Aug. 19. The stock could be near a trough now.</p>\n<p>I still believe that&nbsp;as I wrote on June 4, BB stock could be worth $20.91 per share, assuming its FCF turns positive this year. All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.</p>\n<p>For example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.</p>\n<p>That is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.</p>\n<p><b>Where This Leaves BlackBerry</b></p>\n<p>Last year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.</p>\n<p>If it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.</p>\n<p>For example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.</p>\n<p>However, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.</p>\n<p><b>What BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth</b></p>\n<p>If we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.</p>\n<p>For example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.</p>\n<p>And if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.</p>\n<p>Therefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).</p>\n<p><b>What to do With BB Stock</b></p>\n<p>Analysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by&nbsp;<i>Yahoo! Finance</i>) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.</p>\n<p>Another survey by&nbsp;<i>TipRanks.com</i>&nbsp;says that four analysts have an&nbsp;average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by&nbsp;<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;have an&nbsp;average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.</p>\n<p>So the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. But its fiscal Q1 showed a loss of $35 million in FCF. This didn’t do anything to help BB stock. If fell from a near-term peak of $15.88 on June 3 (before the June 24 Q1 results) to $9.56 on Aug. 19. The stock could be near a trough now.\nI still believe that as I wrote on June 4, BB stock could be worth $20.91 per share, assuming its FCF turns positive this year. All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.\nFor example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.\nThat is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.\nWhere This Leaves BlackBerry\nLast year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.\nIf it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.\nFor example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.\nHowever, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.\nWhat BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth\nIf we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.\nFor example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.\nAnd if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.\nTherefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).\nWhat to do With BB Stock\nAnalysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by Yahoo! Finance) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.\nAnother survey by TipRanks.com says that four analysts have an average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by Seeking Alpha have an average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.\nSo the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. The stock could be near a trough now.</p>\n<p>I still believe that&nbsp;as I wrote on June 4, BB stock could be worth $20.91 per share, assuming its FCF turns positive this year. All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.</p>\n<p>For example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.</p>\n<p>That is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.</p>\n<p><b>Where This Leaves BlackBerry</b></p>\n<p>Last year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.</p>\n<p>If it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.</p>\n<p>For example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.</p>\n<p>However, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.</p>\n<p><b>What BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth</b></p>\n<p>If we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.</p>\n<p>For example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.</p>\n<p>And if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.</p>\n<p>Therefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).</p>\n<p><b>What to do With BB Stock</b></p>\n<p>Analysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by&nbsp;<i>Yahoo! Finance</i>) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.</p>\n<p>Another survey by&nbsp;<i>TipRanks.com</i>&nbsp;says that four analysts have an&nbsp;average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by&nbsp;<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;have an&nbsp;average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.</p>\n<p>So the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. Isn’t BlackBerry still losing money? And if the QNX operating system was so vital to Google’s business, I am sure that Alphabet would already have acquired BlackBerry.</p>\n<p>It doesn’t seem like sensible capital allocation for Alphabet to pay billions of dollars to acquire BlackBerry when it can give the Canadian company a lifeline by choosing to work with it on Android Automotive.</p>\n<p>In the end, Alphabet may buy BlackBerry.However, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Here’s why.</p>\n<p>BB Stock Is Up 113% Over the Past Year</p>\n<p>Although BB stock is up 120% over the past 12 months, it’s traded between $10 and $15 for most of 2021.</p>\n<p>In mid-September, before BlackBerry reported less-than-stellar fiscal second-quarter results,<i>InvestorPlace</i>&nbsp;contributor&nbsp;Ian Bezek argued that there was&nbsp;little evidence&nbsp;to point to a turnaround by the company.</p>\n<p>Except for its Internet of Things (IoT) applications, including its QNX operating system, there was little at BlackBerry to justify its hefty valuation,, Bezek said.</p>\n<p>So let’s consider itsQ2 results.</p>\n<p>Its three operating segments combined delivered a 32.4% decrease in revenue — $175 million compared to $259 million — over the same period a year earlier.</p>\n<p>The revenue of the company’s cybersecurity business was flat year-over-year at $120 million. The unit accounted for 69% of the company’s overall sales. The sales of its QNX-dominated IoT unit, which Bezek thought was a bright spot in an otherwise terrible situation , generated a year-over-year sales increase of 29%, with its top line reaching $40 million. However, its licensing and other segment had just $15 million in revenue in the quarter, down from $108 million a year earlier.</p>\n<p>Segment Revenue for All of 2022</p>\n<p>According to BlackBerry’s Q2 10-Q report, the company says it expects its cybersecurity unit to generate modest sequential growth for the final two quarters. Let’s assume 5% sequential growth each quarter. That translates to $126 million in Q3 and $132 million in Q4, resulting in a full-year total of $485.3 million.</p>\n<p>As for IoT, its revenue climbed 23% over the first half of the year, to $83 million. So let’s assume that it generates $166 million in 2021 . That brings us to $651.3 million in full-year revenue from two out of the company’s three segments.</p>\n<p>Finally, its licensing and other segment, which includes its patent portfolio, is expected to generate $60 million in 2022, down from its original guidance of $100 million.</p>\n<p>That would bring the company’s revenue this year to $711.3 million. Last year, its top line was$893 million. If my estimates prove to be correct, BlackBerry’s revenues will have declined over 31.6% since 2018.</p>\n<p>And, based on my estimates, the IoT segment would only account for 23% of the company’s overall revenue.</p>\n<p>The Bottom Line</p>\n<p>Why would Alphabet or Qualcomm pay $6.2 billion for BlackBerry when they could only immediately utilize the IoT segment, which I expect to generate $166 million of revenue this year? That’s a price-sales multiple of 37 times.</p>\n<p>It’s true that a purchase price of $6.2 billion would value the entire company at eight times sales, based on my estimate. But then the acquirer would have to spend time extracting the necessary value from BlackBerry’s cybersecurity and patent portfolio segments to justify the multiple.</p>\n<p>I don’t think that will happen because, in order to stay in business, BlackBerry will gladly sell Google the QNX Hypervisor software needed to run the Android Automotive operating system.</p>\n<p>From my vantage point, BlackBerry is in no position to reel in such a significant buyer.
