height=\"auto\">Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News
\n
The most-iconic of all tech companies stands a good chance of reaching $3 trillion in market capitalization this week. Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL)finished Friday with a valuation of $2.944 trillion, so all Wall Street needs to do now is add $56 billion to the iPhone maker's stock value and Apple (AAPL) will stand alone in the $3 trillion club.
\n
To put that amount in some perspective, Apple (AAPL) became the first company to hit $1 trillion in market cap in 2018--or, 42 years after Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple (AAPL) in a garage in Cupertino, Calif. It then took Apple just until 2020 to reach $2 trillion in market cap. Right now, the only other company worth more than $2 trillion is Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT), which ended last week with a market cap of $2.57 trillion.
\n
\"The Street is starting to better appreciate the robust fundamental story into 2022 for [Apple Chief Executive] Tim Cook & Co.,\" said Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, in a research note on Sunday. \"Hitting $3 trillion is another watershed moment for Apple as the company continues to prove the doubters wrong with the renaissance of growth story playing out in Cupertino.\"
\n
While Apple's (AAPL) iPhone sales continue to be the biggest source of the company's strength--iPhones accounted for almost $39 billion of Apple's $83.4 billion in fiscal fourth-quarter sales--Ives said the \"linchpin\" of Apple's (AAPL) growing valuation is its services business.
\n
Services, which include items such as sales from the App Store and subscriptions to everything from Apple TV+ to iCloud storage plans, brought in $18.3 billion in revenue in Apple's (AAPL) most-recent quarter. Ives estimates that Apple's (AAPL) services business \"is worth $1.5 trillion in the eyes of the Street,\" and is benefiting from being coupled with a hardware ecosystem that \"is in the midst of its strongest product cycle in over a decade, led by iPhone 13.\"
\n
Even issues related to component supplies that could impede Apple's (AAPL) path toward a market cap for $3 trillion or more are likely to be little more than minor speedbumps for the company to overcome, in Ives opinion.
\n
\"Supply shortages of roughly 15 million iPhone units globally remain an issue that should moderate into early 2022,\" Ives said. \"Importantly, the underlying demand story is our focus into 2022 and we believe is the ultimate driver of the stock going forward.\"
\n
Ives estimates that Apple (AAPL) will sell more than 40 million iPhones during the end-of-the-year holiday season, and that China alone is set to see 15 million upgrades to the iPhone 13 during the quarter that concludes at the end of December.
\n
Along with the iPhone, Ives said many signs point toward Apple (AAPL) rolling out its first augmented reality [AR] glasses by the summer of 2022, and that move could add $20 a share to the company's valuation. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty also recently said that Apple (AAPL) should see success with its AR glasses due to its long-time track record of entering consumer markets with successful new products.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple's $3 trillion market cap to be a 'watershed moment' for company
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple's $3 trillion market cap to be a 'watershed moment' for company\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-13 11:41 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
As many companies begin to gear down for the Christmas and New Year holidays, there remains one tech stalwart that is on the brink of a milestone that no other company in history has achieved: Apple.\n...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AAPL":"苹果"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/news/3779362-apple-nearing-watershed-moment-of-3-trillion-in-market-cap","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1171394291","content_text":"As many companies begin to gear down for the Christmas and New Year holidays, there remains one tech stalwart that is on the brink of a milestone that no other company in history has achieved: Apple.\nJustin Sullivan/Getty Images News\nThe most-iconic of all tech companies stands a good chance of reaching $3 trillion in market capitalization this week. Demand forelectric vehiclesin China is appa","content":"
What happened
\n
Good news for Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)investors! Demand forelectric vehiclesin China is apparently so strong that Tesla has decided to invest $188 million to expand production capacity at its Shanghai factory. It's so high that Tesla is putting 4,000 more people on the payroll at the site, as Reuters reported Friday morning.
\n
So why was Tesla stock trading down by 2% as of 11:37 a.m. ET Friday?
\n
So what
\n
On the one hand, this sure sounds like upbeat news. Tesla initially wanted its Shanghai factory to produce 500,000 cars per year -- and it already has the capacity to manufacture 450,000 Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers annually. This decision speaks to CEO Elon Musk's confidence that even 500,000 vehicles a year soon won't be enough to meet the demand for Teslas in China and the European markets that its Chinese facility also supplies.
\n
And yet Europe may also be part of Tesla's problem. As Reuters also reported Friday, the automaker just withdrew its application for state support for the construction of a planned battery plant near Berlin, Germany. Tesla had previously asked the Federal Ministry of Economics and the Brandenburg Ministry of Economics for some $1.3 billion in subsidies for the plant. But citing his belief that \"all subsidies should be eliminated\" from the electric car industry, Musk says he's now willing to forego that state support -- and hopes that governments will also eliminate \"massive subsidies for oil and gas.\"
\n
Now what
\n
Thus we're left with a sort of \"bad news, good news\" situation in Germany. Demand forelectric vehiclesin China is apparently so strong that Tesla has decided to invest $188 million to expand production capacity at its Shanghai factory. It's so high that Tesla is putting 4,000 more people on the payroll at the site, as Reuters reported Friday morning.\nSo why was Tesla stock trading down by 2% as of 11:37 a.m. ET Friday?\nSo what\nOn the one hand, this sure sounds like upbeat news. Tesla initially wanted its Shanghai factory to produce 500,000 cars per year -- and it already has the capacity to manufacture 450,000 Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers annually. This decision speaks to CEO Elon Musk's confidence that even 500,000 vehicles a year soon won't be enough to meet the demand for Teslas in China and the European markets that its Chinese facility also supplies.\nAnd yet Europe may also be part of Tesla's problem. But citing his belief that \"all subsidies should be eliminated\" from the electric car industry, Musk says he's now willing to forego that state support -- and hopes that governments will also eliminate \"massive subsidies for oil and gas.\"\nNow what\nThus we're left with a sort of \"bad news, good news\" situation in Germany. On the one hand, Tesla is giving up $1.3 billion that would have essentially dropped straight to its bottom line as the German government picked up part of the tab for the automaker's capital expenditures.\nOn the other hand, though, Tesla is making it clear that doesn't really need these subsidies anymore. Over the past 12 months, it has generated free cash flow of $2.6 billion, and GAAP(generally accepted accounting principles) profits of $3.5 billion. By forgoing this subsidy, Tesla gains a bit of moral authority as it urges governments to not subsidize rivals such as Rivian,Lucid, and other EV companies that have not yet reached profitability (and to halt subsidies tooil companies, too).\nFor the moment, investors seem to be focusing on the negative aspects of the news. Many small investors don’t care.
\n
Individual investors continue to stampede into shares of growth companies, the types of buzzy stocks that have enjoyed explosive price gains this year. Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Nvidia Corp. and Apple Inc. are the three stocks most purchased this month by individual investors, according to VandaTrack, a Vanda Research flow tracker that measures net purchases.
\n
Growth stocks are typically companies—often tech firms—that are expected to deliver faster-than-average profit growth in the future. They tend to flourish in a low-rate environment, including over the past year and a half. Investors are typically willing to pay higher prices for such companies when they don’t see many alternatives for making sizable profits.
\n
For example, 18 of the stocks that are most favored by individual investors, including the chip makers AMD and Nvidia, trade on average at nearly 13 times their trailing 12-month sales, according to an analysis by Dow Jones Market Data. Stocks in the S&P 500 trade at an average of three times their sales.
\n
But mounting inflation can be troublesome for growth stocks. That is because inflation brings the prospect of higher interest rates and higher bond yields, making the future cash flows of growth stocks less attractive. Traders, in turn, typically shuffle their portfolios to include other investments that stand to benefit from rising rates.
\n
A government report this month showed that the consumer-price index jumped 6.2% in October from a year earlier, climbing atthe fastest pace in three decades. Fund-flow tracker EPFR, whose data captures mostly institutional investor behavior, estimates that investors responded by yanking more than $2 billion out of U.S. tech-focused mutual and exchange-traded funds in the two weeks ended Nov. 17. That marks the worst stretch since a two-week period ended in early January 2019.
\n
At the same time, institutional investors are pumping money into more value-oriented sectors, such as consumer goods, healthcare and utilities, EPFR data show. Those industries tend to trade at lower valuations and tend to be more defensive moves for investors during times of heightened uncertainty.
\n
Greg Hahn, chief investment officer of Indianapolis-based Winthrop Capital Management, said his team has been paring back exposure to large-cap technology stocks.
\n
“We’re shifting out of growth,” Mr. Hahn said. Instead, the firm is focused on finding quality companies that have reasonable valuations and strong balance sheets—ones that are “sustainable in a potentially rough next market cycle,” he said.
\n
Recently, Mr. Hahn said, he has added exposure to a company that manufactures engines and generators and a pharmaceutical company that produces medicines and other products for animals.
\n
To be sure, U.S. stocks are still hovering near records, bond yields remain historically low and an earlier rally in gold prices has subsided. That suggests that inflation fears haven’t yet spurred many professional investors to entirely upend their playbooks. Some 61% of fund managers surveyed this month believe inflation is transitory, according to Bank of America Global Research.
\n
Still, the recent divergence in strategy between professional and individual investors is the latest example of the unusual dynamics that have played out in financial markets this year. Repeatedly, small investors have upended longstanding trading strategies by sending stocks such asGameStopCorp.andHertz Global HoldingsInc.HTZ11.06%soaring, with little regard for the companies’ underlying value. Some rely on classic momentum investing—a strategy of buying assets simply because they are rising.
\n
It isn’t uncommon for stocks favored by individual investors to be volatile. But those stocks can pay off too: AMD and Nvidia are each up 28% or more month-to-date, while Apple has climbed 8.1%. That compares with a 2.1% rise for the S&P 500.
\n
“The lesson we’ve learned over the past 12 to 18 months…is that IPOs, fiscal stimulus and other micro [events] are much bigger drivers for retail investor behavior” than inflation readings, said Viraj Patel, global macro strategist at Vanda Research. “We’ve never woken up the day after the CPI and seen huge selling from retail investors.”
\n
Matt Delao, a 28-year-old individual investor from California, said he has followed data on inflation and supply-chain snarls this year. Shares have been, essentially, cut in half from their peak of about more than $440 a share. That peak, of course, was pre-Covid and pre-737 MAX woes. But Boeing shares, which are at about $228, can move back to $300 by the end of 2022 if things settle down for the large American airplane maker.
\n
Tuesday, Seaport Global analyst Richard Safran reiterated his Buy rating on Boeing stock (ticker: BA) and said it’s a good idea for investors to buy now as a 2022 turnaround story. His price target is $298 a share.
\n
Safran launched coverage of Boeing stock at Seaport with a Buy rating in June 2020, and he now believes he was too early. He didn’t see the Covid pandemic lingering as long as it has. What’s more, he didn’t see problems on Boeing 787 planes adding to its woes on its 737s.
\n
The 737 MAX jet was grounded worldwide for about 20 months, beginning in March 2019, after two deadly crashes inside of five months. MAX deliveries resumed near the end of 2020. But 787 jets aren’t being delivered right now because of quality problems discovered in recent months.
\n
Still, when Safran looks at 2022 and beyond—in a period where Boeing has less drama and more planes produced—he sees the stock moving north of $300.
\n
It isn’t hard to justify that view.Airbus and Boeing shares both trade for around 20 times estimated 2022 cash flows. But based on 2023 estimated numbers,Airbus is trading for about 18 times and Boeing stock is trading for less than 14 times.
\n
If Boeing were to trade like Airbus on its projected 2023 numbers, the stock would be between $300 and $330 a share. Investors just need confidence that 2023 will turn out well for Boeing.
\n
The tide is starting to turn, according to Safran. “Investor sentiment appears to be improving following” Boeing’s third-quarter earnings, wrote the analyst in a Tuesday note. “The general trend is that the worst is likely behind [the company].”
\n
Safran doesn’t have the highest price target on the Street. He is among a group of bulls with price targets around $300. The bottom few still have price targets for Boeing stock roughly where it trades now.
\n
Overall, about 61% of analysts covering the stock rate shares Buy. The average Buy-rating ratio for stocks in the S&P 500 is about 55%.
\n
Boeing stock is down 2.3% in Tuesday trading. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are up about 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively. Boeing stock, however, jumped 5% Monday after the start of the Dubai Air Show on Sunday.
But he said his trading strategy has focused mostly on screening for stocks that appear priced for a significant move. Recently, he has traded options for AMD and bitcoin-mining companyRiot Blockchain Inc.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
What Inflation? The researchers observed significantly higher antibody levels among the recipients of the Moderna vaccine compared to the recipients of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
\n
Among all the participants who had a previous COVID-19 infection, those who were vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine still carried more antibodies.
\n
However, more research is needed to understand whether the difference in antibody levels leads to different levels of protection against the virus. Experts stress that testing for antibodies isn't the only way of measuring protection.
\n
Why Does Moderna Produce Higher Antibody Levels?
\n
According to the authors of the study, the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine contains more mRNA and requires a longer waiting period than Pfizer-BioNTech, which may have played a role.
\n
“It is also possible that the mRNA itself used in the Moderna vaccine may have led to this difference independent of the dose in the vaccine or the timing of the two shots,\"Richard Martinello, MD, Yale Medicine infectious diseases specialist and associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study, tells Verywell.
\n
The Moderna vaccine contains more mRNA within the vaccine compared to the Pfizer dosage. And doses are given 28 days apart, compared to 21 days for the Pfizer vaccine.
\n
Still, further research is needed to understand why Moderna produced more antibodies. Experts still aren't sure if varying antibody levels translate to a difference in protection against COVID-19.
\n
Antibody Tests Don’t Tell the Whole Story
\n
The study has notable limitations since it focused solely on healthcare workers and did not include data on cellular immunity.
\n
“Antibody levels have been found to provide a good measure of one’s protection against infection,” Martinello says. “However, it is known that cellular immunity plays a key role in the protection against and response to COVID. This is much more difficult to measure so it is not a routine test available from clinical laboratories. Therefore, while it is possible that the Moderna vaccine may be found to be more protective than the Pfizer vaccine, that remains to be seen.”
\n
A May study found that antibody levels can be predictive of protection from COVID-19 infection, but the researchers acknowledged that it's important to study T cell and B cell memory responses as well.
\n
Although antibody levels are much simpler and cheaper to measure, and higher levels are likely to be more protective, they’re not a good measure of the degree and/or duration of protection an individual has against COVID-19,Stanley H.
