Consensus economists are looking for a half-million jobs to have returned in November, with the pace of hiring slowing only slightly from October's 531,000 gain. The unemployment rate is also expected to improve further to 4.5% from October's 4.6%, reaching the lowest level since March 2020.
\n
\"We expect non-farm payrolls to have risen by 500,000 in November, but the growing risk of a winter COVID wave and a dwindling supply of available workers will weigh on jobs growth soon,\" wrote Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist for Capital Economics, in a note last week.
\n
\"Employment growth can’t continue at this pace for much longer unless the labor force stages a more notable recovery. If anything, labor supply couldworsenover the coming months as the federal vaccine mandate covering 100 [million] workers begins on January 4,\" Ashworth added. \"That suggests wage growth will remain strong, and we expect a 0.4% [month-over-month] rise in average hourly earnings in October.\"
\n
On a year-over-year basis, average hourly earnings are expected to rise by 5.0%, accelerating even further after October's already marked 4.9% rise and representing the fastest wage growth rate since February.
\n
Growing average wages and a tight labor market — while a positive for consumers and their ability to spend — has also stoked concerns over persistent inflation. Last week's Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) deflator from the Bureau of Economic Analysis for October showed an annual jump of 5.0% in the index, or the biggest rise since 1990. And the core PCE, or the Fed's preferred inflation gauge stripping out volatile food and energy prices, rose by 4.1% year-over-year — the most in three decades.
\n
Other recent data have homed in on the tight labor market and presaged a potentially strong November jobs report. Last week'sinitial jobless claims fell to a 52-year low of 199,000, taking out both the prior pandemic-era low and pre-pandemic average for new first-time filings. This served as yet another point underscoring the steep competition for labor among U.S. employers, with companies attempting to hire and retain their existing workforces amid widespread labor shortages.
\n
Even given these lingering scarcities, the labor force participation rate has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. The civilian labor force was still down by nearly 3 million participants compared to February 2020, with lingering concerns over the virus and adesire by many working-age individuals to seek out new roles with better flexibility and benefitsstill keeping many individuals on the sidelines of the workforce. Consensus economists are looking for a half-million jobs to have returned in November, with the pace of hiring slowing only slightly from October's 531,000 gain. The unemployment rate is also expected to improve further to 4.5% from October's 4.6%, reaching the lowest level since March 2020.\n\"We expect non-farm payrolls to have risen by 500,000 in November, but the growing risk of a winter COVID wave and a dwindling supply of available workers will weigh on jobs growth soon,\" wrote Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist for Capital Economics, in a note last week.\n\"Employment growth can’t continue at this pace for much longer unless the labor force stages a more notable recovery. If anything, labor supply couldworsenover the coming months as the federal vaccine mandate covering 100 [million] workers begins on January 4,\" Ashworth added. \"That suggests wage growth will remain strong, and we expect a 0.4% [month-over-month] rise in average hourly earnings in October.\"\nOn a year-over-year basis, average hourly earnings are expected to rise by 5.0%, accelerating even further after October's already marked 4.9% rise and representing the fastest wage growth rate since February.\nGrowing average wages and a tight labor market — while a positive for consumers and their ability to spend — has also stoked concerns over persistent inflation. Last week's Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) deflator from the Bureau of Economic Analysis for October showed an annual jump of 5.0% in the index, or the biggest rise since 1990. And the core PCE, or the Fed's preferred inflation gauge stripping out volatile food and energy prices, rose by 4.1% year-over-year — the most in three decades.\nOther recent data have homed in on the tight labor market and presaged a potentially strong November jobs report. Last week'sinitial jobless claims fell to a 52-year low of 199,000, taking out both the prior pandemic-era low and pre-pandemic average for new first-time filings. This served as yet another point underscoring the steep competition for labor among U.S. employers, with companies attempting to hire and retain their existing workforces amid widespread labor shortages.\nEven given these lingering scarcities, the labor force participation rate has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. The civilian labor force was still down by nearly 3 million participants compared to February 2020, with lingering concerns over the virus and adesire by many working-age individuals to seek out new roles with better flexibility and benefitsstill keeping many individuals on the sidelines of the workforce. as part of a $20 billion project to help meet the high demand for semiconductors in the U.S.
\n
Intel (INTC) -Get Intel Corporation (INTC) Report on Friday broke ground on two new computer chip factories in Arizona as part of a $20 billion project to help alleviate the severe shortage of semiconductors in the U.S.
\n
The Santa Clara, Calif.-basedsemiconductor chip manufacturer'sCEO Pat Gelsinger led the project's groundbreaking ceremony at the company's Ocotillo campus in Chandler, Ariz., marking the largest private investment in the state's history.
\n
Intel expects the factories to be fully operational in 2024 to manufacture the company's most advanced process technologies.
\n
“Today’s celebration marks an important milestone as we work to boost capacity and meet the incredible demand for semiconductors: the foundational technology for the digitization of everything,\" Gelsinger said in acompany statement. \"We are ushering in a new era of innovation – for Intel, for Arizona and for the world. This $20 billion expansion will bring our total investment in Arizona to more than $50 billion since opening the site over 40 years ago.
\n
\"As the only U.S.-based leading-edge chipmaker, we are committed to building on this long-term investment and helping the United States regain semiconductor leadership,” Gelsinger said.
\n
Shares of Intel on Friday traded 0.18% higher to $54.32 after hours.
\n
Gelsinger on Thursday participated in a virtual meeting with tech company executives and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to address the global semiconductor chip shortage, which has interfered with production in the high-tech, electronics and automotive industries.
\n
The two new factories, to be named Fab 52 and Fab 62, will house a total of six semiconductor fabs. The very highest yielders can be value traps, and vulnerable to cuts in their payouts.
\n
The S&P 500 High Dividend Index, screened via an approach espoused by Savita Subramanian, head of U.S. equity strategy at BofA Securities, offers a way to get high payouts with more modest risk. The index, composed of 80 high-yielding dividend stocks culled from the S&P 500, has easily outperformed the S&P 500 so far this year, with a total return of 23% through Monday, compared with 18% for the broader benchmark.
\n
Subramanian suggested that instead of buying the more vulnerable stocks in the top quintile of the S&P 500 in terms of yield, investors should look at the second quintile.Barron’sapplied the same approach to the S&P 500 High Dividend Index.
\n
We divided the index into quintiles, each with 16 stocks. The first contained the highest yielders, so we looked at the six highest yielders in the second quintile, based on FactSet data. All six of these companies have avoided dividend suspensions due to the pandemic, though one had to cut its payout. The very highest yielders can be value traps, and vulnerable to cuts in their payouts.\nThe S&P 500 High Dividend Index, screened via an approach espoused by Savita Subramanian, head of U.S. equity strategy at BofA Securities, offers a way to get high payouts with more modest risk. The index, composed of 80 high-yielding dividend stocks culled from the S&P 500, has easily outperformed the S&P 500 so far this year, with a total return of 23% through Monday, compared with 18% for the broader benchmark.\nSubramanian suggested that instead of buying the more vulnerable stocks in the top quintile of the S&P 500 in terms of yield, investors should look at the second quintile.Barron’sapplied the same approach to the S&P 500 High Dividend Index.\nWe divided the index into quintiles, each with 16 stocks. The first contained the highest yielders, so we looked at the six highest yielders in the second quintile, based on FactSet data.
Consensus economists expect the labor force participation rate to tick up only slightly in November to reach 61.7%, growing from October's 61.6% but coming in well below the 63.3% rate from February 2020.
\n
Returning the economy back to pre-pandemic labor force participation levels and ensuring job gains are seen equitably across different groups has become a key focus for the Federal Reserve. And the distance still left to make up on these fronts has also been the biggest factor keeping the Fed ultra-accommodative with its monetary policy support, even after a parade of hotter-than-expected inflation reports that would appear to warrant a more hawkish policy tilt and a quicker-than-expected hike to interest rates.Fed Chair Jerome Powell's renomination to remain as head of the central bankfurther suggests the Fed's focus on the labor market as a critical informing factor for monetary policy will remain.
\n
\"Market views for future Fed rate increases have been pulled forward aggressively in response to evidence that elevated inflation pressures are likely to persist for longer,\" wrote Deutsche Bank economist Justin Weidner in a note last week. \"However, as Chair Powell's November press conference made evident, prospects for the labor market to return to maximum employment remain a critical consideration for when the Fed will eventually begin to actively tighten monetary policy.\"
\n
Economic calendar
\n
\n

Monday:Pending home sales, month-over-month, October (0.7% expected, -2.3% in September); Dallas Federal Reserve Manufacturing Activity Index, November (17.0 expected, 14.6 in October)

\n

Tuesday:FHFA House Price Index, month-over-month, September (1.2% expected, 1.0% in August); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, month-over-month, September (1.30% expected, 1.17% in August); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, September (19.66% during prior month); MNI Chicago PMI, November (67.0 expected, 68.4 in October); Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, November (110.0 expected, 113.8 in October)

\n

Wednesday:MBA Mortgage Applications, November 26 (1.8% during prior week); ADP Employment Change, November (515,000 expected, 571,000 in October); Markit U.S. Manufacturing PMI, November final (59.1 during prior month); Construction Spending, month-over-month, October (0.5% expected, -0.5% in September); ISM Manufacturing, November (61.0 expected, 60.8 in October); Federal Reserve releases Beige Book

\n

Thursday:Challenger job cuts, November (-71.7% in October); Initial jobless claims, week ended Nov. 27 (199,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, Nov. 20 (2.049 during prior week)

\n

Friday:Change in non-farm payrolls, November (500,000 expected, 531,000 in October); Unemployment rate, November (4.5% expected, 4.6% in October); Average Hourly Earnings, month-over-month, November (0.4% expected, 0.4% in October); Average Hourly Earnings, year-over-year, November (5.0% expected, 4.9% in October); Markit U.S. Services PMI, November final (57.0 in prior print); Markit U.S. Composite PMI, November final (56.5 in prior print); ISM Services Index, November (65.0 expected, 66.7 in October); Factory Orders, October (0.5% expected, 0.2% in September); Durable Goods Orders, October final (-0.5% in prior print)

\n
\n
Earnings calendar
\n
\n

Monday:No notable reports scheduled for release

\n

Tuesday:Salesforce.com (CRM) after market close

\n

Wednesday:PVH Corp. Consensus economists expect the labor force participation rate to tick up only slightly in November to reach 61.7%, growing from October's 61.6% but coming in well below the 63.3% rate from February 2020.\nReturning the economy back to pre-pandemic labor force participation levels and ensuring job gains are seen equitably across different groups has become a key focus for the Federal Reserve. And the distance still left to make up on these fronts has also been the biggest factor keeping the Fed ultra-accommodative with its monetary policy support, even after a parade of hotter-than-expected inflation reports that would appear to warrant a more hawkish policy tilt and a quicker-than-expected hike to interest rates.Fed Chair Jerome Powell's renomination to remain as head of the central bankfurther suggests the Fed's focus on the labor market as a critical informing factor for monetary policy will remain.\n\"Market views for future Fed rate increases have been pulled forward aggressively in response to evidence that elevated inflation pressures are likely to persist for longer,\" wrote Deutsche Bank economist Justin Weidner in a note last week. \"However, as Chair Powell's November press conference made evident, prospects for the labor market to return to maximum employment remain a critical consideration for when the Fed will eventually begin to actively tighten monetary policy.\"\nEconomic calendar\n\nMonday:Pending home sales, month-over-month, October (0.7% expected, -2.3% in September); Dallas Federal Reserve Manufacturing Activity Index, November (17.0 expected, 14.6 in October)\nTuesday:FHFA House Price Index, month-over-month, September (1.2% expected, 1.0% in August); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, month-over-month, September (1.30% expected, 1.17% in August); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, September (19.66% during prior month); MNI Chicago PMI, November (67.0 expected, 68.4 in October); Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, November (110.0 expected, 113.8 in October)\nWednesday:MBA Mortgage Applications, November 26 (1.8% during prior week); ADP Employment Change, November (515,000 expected, 571,000 in October); Markit U.S. Manufacturing PMI, November final (59.1 during prior month); Construction Spending, month-over-month, October (0.5% expected, -0.5% in September); ISM Manufacturing, November (61.0 expected, 60.8 in October); Federal Reserve releases Beige Book\nThursday:Challenger job cuts, November (-71.7% in October); Initial jobless claims, week ended Nov. 27 (199,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, Nov. 20 (2.049 during prior week)\nFriday:Change in non-farm payrolls, November (500,000 expected, 531,000 in October); Unemployment rate, November (4.5% expected, 4.6% in October); Average Hourly Earnings, month-over-month, November (0.4% expected, 0.4% in October); Average Hourly Earnings, year-over-year, November (5.0% expected, 4.9% in October); Markit U.S. Services PMI, November final (57.0 in prior print); Markit U.S. Composite PMI, November final (56.5 in prior print); ISM Services Index, November (65.0 expected, 66.7 in October); Factory Orders, October (0.5% expected, 0.2% in September); Durable Goods Orders, October final (-0.5% in prior print)\n\nEarnings calendar\n\nMonday:No notable reports scheduled for release\nTuesday:Salesforce.com (CRM) after market close\nWednesday:PVH Corp. Debuting in the public markets just shortly after the U.S. infrastructure bill renewed interest in electric vehicle(EV) plays, so RIVN stock had a lot on its side right out of the gate.
\n
Atop pent-up excitement for the EV startup, which counts Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) and Ford(NYSE:F) as backers, it makes sense why it rocketed from its IPO price of $78 per share to a high of $179.47. Since then, it has fallen to approximately $115 per share.
\n
But if you didn’t buy it when it began trading on Nov. 10, should you chase it now? Not so fast. Yes, time and again, skeptics of EV stocks have been proven wrong.Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA) critics had to eat humble pie in 2020. Even doubters of Lucid Group(NASDAQ:LCID) were wrong in the end, as the luxury EV maker is making progress at a break-neck pace.
\n
However, while this EV startup focused on the mass market has a shot of becoming a major automaker, that alone doesn’t make RIVN stock a buy. The stock has dropped since the excitement surrounding its IPO faded, and it could do so again once the current EV stock frenzy is over. Therefore, it’s best to take your time with Rivian.
\n
RIVN Stock at a Glance
\n
Rivian may be the latest EV company to go public, but it’s not exactly a new kid on the block.Founded in 2009 by CEO RJ Scaringe, it took the company nearly a decade to really start getting off the ground.
\n
The startup began by purchasing a former Mitsubishi(OTCMKTS:MMTOF) plant in Normal, Illinois in 2017 and obtaining investments from Amazon and Ford in 2019. Rivian then raised billions more from T. Rowe Price(NASDAQ:TROW) and other institutional investors. In total, it raised $10.5 billion in private funding rounds.
\n
Following the RIVN stock IPO, Scaringe’s venture now adds another $12 billion to its coffers. That’s leaps and bounds above the $4.8 billion Lucid has in its war chest and the $16.1 billion in cash Tesla has on hand. However, a good chunk of this company’s $22.5 billion mountain of cash will be used to finance its scaling up.
\n
Still in the pre-revenue stage, Rivian is years away from generating the revenue and/or earnings needed to justify its valuation of nearly $100 billion. So, why are investors so excited about this particular venture?
\n
The answer is simple. If Lucid, going after just the luxury market, is worth $90 billion to Mr. Market today, presumably a company going after the mass market deserves a higher valuation.
\n
Looking at the details, though, it makes little sense to assign it this value. This may not stop Rivian shares from charging higher right now. But in time, both sector-specific and company-specific hype could again fade, pushing shares lower.
\n
What Could Cause Rivian’s Price to Drop Again
\n
RIVN stock may be sticking to levels around $115. Yet the main drivers of its recent rise were short-term in nature. Its shares got a boost from both the renewed hype surrounding EV stocks and excitement specifically about this company.
\n
It’s unclear how long this latest wave of buzz around EV stocks will last. But at some point, investors will take a breather. That happened earlier this year after EV plays made “to the moon” moves in response to now-President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
\n
Once the market realized that mass adoption remained years away despite his generally pro-EV agenda, electric vehicle plays moved lower. The same thing could happen in the coming weeks or months as investors again realize, even with the infrastructure bill, electric cars and trucks are years away from hitting critical mass.
\n
As for the company-specific buzz? One one hand, it may seem like Rivian is another Lucid in the making. Only this time, it’s going after a much larger market. On the other hand, it may be harder to rationalize a high upfront valuation for this stock as seen with LCID stock.
\n
It was a stretch to justify the company’s $80 billion valuation right before its IPO. In theory, to be worth that amount, it would need to be selling 500,000 vehicles a year by 2025. At nearly $100 billion, it’s even harder to rationalize.
\n
Rivian also faces other hurdles, like the fact that the “old school” car-makers are making moves into the EV market. Getting to six-digit delivery numbers in such a short span of time could be easier said than done.
\n
The Verdict on RIVN Stock After Its IPO
\n
Rivian could ultimately prove its skeptics wrong. Debuting in the public markets just shortly after the U.S. infrastructure bill renewed interest in electric vehicle(EV) plays, so RIVN stock had a lot on its side right out of the gate.\nAtop pent-up excitement for the EV startup, which counts Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) and Ford(NYSE:F) as backers, it makes sense why it rocketed from its IPO price of $78 per share to a high of $179.47. Since then, it has fallen to approximately $115 per share.\nBut if you didn’t buy it when it began trading on Nov. 10, should you chase it now? Not so fast. Yes, time and again, skeptics of EV stocks have been proven wrong.Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA) critics had to eat humble pie in 2020. Even doubters of Lucid Group(NASDAQ:LCID) were wrong in the end, as the luxury EV maker is making progress at a break-neck pace.\nHowever, while this EV startup focused on the mass market has a shot of becoming a major automaker, that alone doesn’t make RIVN stock a buy. The stock has dropped since the excitement surrounding its IPO faded, and it could do so again once the current EV stock frenzy is over. Therefore, it’s best to take your time with Rivian.\nRIVN Stock at a Glance\nRivian may be the latest EV company to go public, but it’s not exactly a new kid on the block.Founded in 2009 by CEO RJ Scaringe, it took the company nearly a decade to really start getting off the ground.\nThe startup began by purchasing a former Mitsubishi(OTCMKTS:MMTOF) plant in Normal, Illinois in 2017 and obtaining investments from Amazon and Ford in 2019. Rivian then raised billions more from T. Rowe Price(NASDAQ:TROW) and other institutional investors. In total, it raised $10.5 billion in private funding rounds.\nFollowing the RIVN stock IPO, Scaringe’s venture now adds another $12 billion to its coffers. That’s leaps and bounds above the $4.8 billion Lucid has in its war chest and the $16.1 billion in cash Tesla has on hand. However, a good chunk of this company’s $22.5 billion mountain of cash will be used to finance its scaling up.\nStill in the pre-revenue stage, Rivian is years away from generating the revenue and/or earnings needed to justify its valuation of nearly $100 billion. So, why are investors so excited about this particular venture?\nThe answer is simple. If Lucid, going after just the luxury market, is worth $90 billion to Mr. Market today, presumably a company going after the mass market deserves a higher valuation.\nLooking at the details, though, it makes little sense to assign it this value. This may not stop Rivian shares from charging higher right now. But in time, both sector-specific and company-specific hype could again fade, pushing shares lower.\nWhat Could Cause Rivian’s Price to Drop Again\nRIVN stock may be sticking to levels around $115. Yet the main drivers of its recent rise were short-term in nature. Its shares got a boost from both the renewed hype surrounding EV stocks and excitement specifically about this company.\nIt’s unclear how long this latest wave of buzz around EV stocks will last. But at some point, investors will take a breather. That happened earlier this year after EV plays made “to the moon” moves in response to now-President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.\nOnce the market realized that mass adoption remained years away despite his generally pro-EV agenda, electric vehicle plays moved lower. The same thing could happen in the coming weeks or months as investors again realize, even with the infrastructure bill, electric cars and trucks are years away from hitting critical mass.\nAs for the company-specific buzz? One one hand, it may seem like Rivian is another Lucid in the making. Only this time, it’s going after a much larger market. On the other hand, it may be harder to rationalize a high upfront valuation for this stock as seen with LCID stock.\nIt was a stretch to justify the company’s $80 billion valuation right before its IPO. In theory, to be worth that amount, it would need to be selling 500,000 vehicles a year by 2025. At nearly $100 billion, it’s even harder to rationalize.\nRivian also faces other hurdles, like the fact that the “old school” car-makers are making moves into the EV market. Getting to six-digit delivery numbers in such a short span of time could be easier said than done.\nThe Verdict on RIVN Stock After Its IPO\nRivian could ultimately prove its skeptics wrong. But that doesn’t mean you should make this stock a buy at any price. The latest wave of EV trading is at high risk of dissipating, as it did in previous waves. In addition, the rich valuation assigned to it might not be as sustainable as the rich valuation currently given to Lucid.\nSo, what’s your best move with RIVN stock after its incredible run-up post-IPO? Wait for a pullback, and then reassess the situation.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"RIVN":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2329,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":818458044,"gmtCreate":1630432627288,"gmtModify":1631889282768,"author":{"id":"4088958950420550","authorId":"4088958950420550","name":"d85824","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088958950420550","authorIdStr":"4088958950420550"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like like","listText":"Like like","text":"Like like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/818458044","repostId":"1166102613","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":606,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":605319286,"gmtCreate":1639111702715,"gmtModify":1639112846751,"author":{"id":"4088958950420550","authorId":"4088958950420550","name":"d85824","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088958950420550","authorIdStr":"4088958950420550"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/605319286","repostId":"1196531742","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1196531742","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1639100306,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1196531742?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-12-10 09:38","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Do People Really Consult Horoscopes For Buying Stocks?
