He finds that the addressable market in communications software is close to 30% of overall long-term enterprise software spending, in many cases replacing legacy hardware and services, and “continuing the general trend of software expansion into the broader economy.” Rangan concedes that cloud penetration in the communications sector so far is modest, but he sees growing acceptance, with industry growth of better than 30%.
\n
On Zoom, Rangan writes that the company “remains poised to be one of the most strategic applications software companies” in the sector, but he notes that after a five-quarter period of hyper growth—with quarterly revenue expanding between 169% to 369% on a year-over-year basis—the company now faces challenging comparisons and much higher churn in small accounts. He thinks it will be a challenge for the company to sustain 25% growth longer term. Rangan sets a price target on the stock of $200.
\n
Rangan set Buy ratings on both RingCentral (RNG), with a $240 price target, and Twilio (TWLO), with a $350 target, both potential returns of more than 30% from current levels. RingCentral, he writes, “offers investors high visibility into multi-year durable high revenue growth in a large market with a much improved competitive position and a complete multi-modal communications and collaborations platform whose value proposition has been elevated with Covid-19.” On Twilio, Rangan asserts that the provider of communications services to websites has “significant mind share with developers,” with management projecting growth above 30% in each of the next four years.
\n
Rangan sets Neutral ratings on both LiveVox Holdings (LVOX), a contact-center software provider, and Atlassian (TEAM), a provider of software-development and project-management tools.
\n
The analyst starts both Everbridge (EVBG) and Citrix Systems (CTXS) with Sell ratings. On Everbridge, which provides a mass notification service for companies and government agencies, he sees “near-term execution and disruption risk” after the recent resignation of the company’s CEO. Citrix, he writes, is going through a “complex cloud transition” that has pushed out some of its financial targets. He notes that the company is going through a management change and canceled an analyst day that had been scheduled for October.
\n
Citrix rose 1.2%. Twilio fell 0.3%, LiveVox fell 3.2%, RingCentral fell 2.3%, Everbridge fell 4.5%, Zoom fell 0.7%, and Atlassian fell 5.2% on Thursday.
\n

","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Buy RingCentral Stock Over Zoom, Goldman Says
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBuy RingCentral Stock Over Zoom, Goldman Says\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-17 11:15 GMT+8 Barrons\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Communications software is in a long-term growth cycle, but there are better ways to play the sector than Zoom Video Communications, according to Goldman Sachs analyst Kash Rangan.\nOn Thursday, Rangan...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"ZM":"Zoom","RNG":"Ringcentral Inc."},"source_url":"https://www.barrons.com/articles/buy-ringcentral-over-zoom-in-cloud-telephony-market-goldman-says-51639673714?mod=hp_LATEST","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1124325534","content_text":"Communications software is in a long-term growth cycle, but there are better ways to play the sector than Zoom Video Communications, according to Goldman Sachs analyst Kash Rangan.\nOn Thursday, Rangan picked up coverage of the “communications and collaboration” segment, launching coverage of seven stocks, including closely watched Zoom (ticker: ZM), which he starts with a Neutral rating.\nRangan is bullish on the opportunity overall. Here are two reasons why they may be right.
\n
Wall Street analysts continue to debate whether Apple stock is a buy as we head into 2022. Recently,I presented the bear argument that, if proven right, could foretell a drop of around 18% in the stock price.
\n
But investors seem to be siding with bulls at the moment, as AAPL shares continue to make fresh highs. Today, I talk about two key reasons recently presented by analysts suggesting that Apple stock could be a good bet for the new year.
\n
Figure 1: Apple's iPhone 13, Apple Watch and AirPods Pro.
\n
iPhone: not all about the holiday
\n
The recent headlines have highlighted the expected performance of the iPhone in the current holiday period. Bloomberg hinted at a slowdown in demand, supported by alleged order cancellations with suppliers. The data point contradicted earlier Wall Street projections for an above-estimate volume of iPhone shipments in the current shopping season.
\n
But DigiTimes Taiwan has recently shifted the focus of attention to the longer term. According to the publication, Apple is looking to “[increase] iPhone shipments by 30% for the first half of next year with the larger goal of exceeding 300 million iPhone shipments in 2022.”
\n
If confirmed, this would represent massive YOY improvement, especially in the first few months of the year. Keep in mind (chart below) that the Cupertino company dropped the mic on iPhone sales in the early part of 2021, setting the bar very high for growth in 2022.
\n
Figure 2: iPhone revenue growth since F19.
\n
I would warn readers, however, not to rely too much on unofficial announcements about iPhone sales. In addition to the issue of reliability of rumors, the assumption of higher shipments could be a misread on Apple ramping up iPhone production to anticipate supply chain constraints.
\n
Apple Glass: the next big thing
\n
The other key reason to own AAPL in 2022 could be the introduction of a brand-new product category. Wedbush’s Dan Ives has been labeling the new device “Apple Glass”, the company’s first attempt at penetrating the AR/VR (augmented and virtual reality) space.
\n
Mr. Ives goes further and estimates the impact of the new product on Apple stock price. Here are two reasons why they may be right.\nWall Street analysts continue to debate whether Apple stock is a buy as we head into 2022. Recently,I presented the bear argument that, if proven right, could foretell a drop of around 18% in the stock price.\nBut investors seem to be siding with bulls at the moment, as AAPL shares continue to make fresh highs. Today, I talk about two key reasons recently presented by analysts suggesting that Apple stock could be a good bet for the new year.\nFigure 1: Apple's iPhone 13, Apple Watch and AirPods Pro.\niPhone: not all about the holiday\nThe recent headlines have highlighted the expected performance of the iPhone in the current holiday period. Bloomberg hinted at a slowdown in demand, supported by alleged order cancellations with suppliers. The data point contradicted earlier Wall Street projections for an above-estimate volume of iPhone shipments in the current shopping season.\nBut DigiTimes Taiwan has recently shifted the focus of attention to the longer term. According to the publication, Apple is looking to “[increase] iPhone shipments by 30% for the first half of next year with the larger goal of exceeding 300 million iPhone shipments in 2022.”\nIf confirmed, this would represent massive YOY improvement, especially in the first few months of the year. Keep in mind (chart below) that the Cupertino company dropped the mic on iPhone sales in the early part of 2021, setting the bar very high for growth in 2022.\nFigure 2: iPhone revenue growth since F19.\nI would warn readers, however, not to rely too much on unofficial announcements about iPhone sales. In addition to the issue of reliability of rumors, the assumption of higher shipments could be a misread on Apple ramping up iPhone production to anticipate supply chain constraints.\nApple Glass: the next big thing\nThe other key reason to own AAPL in 2022 could be the introduction of a brand-new product category. Wedbush’s Dan Ives has been labeling the new device “Apple Glass”, the company’s first attempt at penetrating the AR/VR (augmented and virtual reality) space.\nMr. Ives goes further and estimates the impact of the new product on Apple stock price. According to the analyst, the product launch “could eventually add approximately $20 per share to the sum-of-the-parts value” of the shares.\nWedbush is not alone in its bullish assessment.Morgan Stanley has already suggested that Apple unveiling a mixed reality device in 2022 would be the key catalyst for the hotly-debated metaverse to finally take off.\nThe Apple Maven’s take\nEven as Apple stock reaches its all-time high of $175 apiece, I maintain my bullish stance on the name. Apple’s position as the most important player in consumer tech is at the center of the investment thesis, in my view.\nHowever, keep in mind that buying AAPL at peak price has produced one-year forward returns of “only” 25%, on average, during the iPhone era (i.e. since 2007). This number compares to a much better 46% average annual gain when the stock was bought following a 10% drawdown.\nFrom current levels, therefore, I think that investors should expect to rake in lower returns than if they were buying a dip in share price.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1151,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":604853098,"gmtCreate":1639374132625,"gmtModify":1639374132702,"author":{"id":"4097887764268680","authorId":"4097887764268680","name":"Kyeno","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d5becccf9434d4b95145e28591d97b5","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4097887764268680","authorIdStr":"4097887764268680"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buy now, thank me later. And why not? The newly listed company has left the likes of Ford, General Motors, and Tesla behind in launching an all-electric pickup truck. It has also got more than 55,000 pre-orders for its pickup truck and SUV.
\n

\n
Yet, Rivian is at a very early stage, having delivered just 156 vehicles through October. Let's look at where the company and its stock could be five years from now.
\n

\n
Rivian's growth plans
\n
Rivian plans to focus on the pickup truck, SUV, and commercial van market segments in the near term. Its focus geographies initially include the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe. In the long term, the company hopes to grow by entering new key markets as well as developing adjacent products. Rivian has started commercial production of its pickup truck R1T and plans to start production of its SUV -- R1S -- and electric delivery van in December.
\n

\n

\n
Rivian's production facility in Normal, Illinois, has an estimated annual production capacity of 150,000 units. In addition to 55,000 pre-orders for R1T and R1S, Rivian has an agreement with Amazon for 100,000 delivery vans through 2030. However, Rivian expects to deliver all of the vans by as early as 2025.
\n

\n
It expects to deliver its pre-order backlog of 55,000 R1Ts and R1Ss by the end of 2023. Further, Rivian expects to reach an annual production rate of 150,000 vehicles (including commercial vehicles) by late 2023.
\n

\n
If things go as per Rivian's plan, the company would have delivered 55,000 pickup trucks and SUVs, in addition to, say, half of its 100,000 commercial delivery vans by the end of 2023. In five years, it could be producing 150,000 vehicles annually and might already be setting up a new production facility.
\n

\n
What could support Rivian's growth
\n
In addition to broader governmental and regulatory support for EVs, Rivian has some distinct advantages. First, it is targeting the pickup trucks and SUVs segment, which are among the highest-volume and most profitable auto segments. Similarly, e-commerce growth is pushing the demand for delivery vehicles -- another of Rivian's key segments. Logistics and e-commerce companies are transforming their fleets to electric vehicles, anticipating increased regulatory requirements for the same.
\n

\n
Further, Rivian's own charging network may help its growth. Rivian hopes to appeal to its potential customers and build confidence in the brand through its own network of chargers. In sync with the company's offerings, it plans to place chargers at adventurous destinations, in addition to interstates. By the end of 2023, the company plans to install more than 3,500 fast chargers at over 600 sites. Additionally, the company intends to install more than 10,000 level 2 chargers through 2023.
\n

\n
Rivian's direct-to-customer model, with no dealer network, along with its own charging and service network could help it deliver an end-to-end differentiated customer experience. Over time, the company hopes to monetize this through high-value services and subscription opportunities, including membership and software services, financing, insurance, charging, maintenance, repair, as well as Rivian's own resale program.
\n

\n
Finally, the recent interest in Rivian shows that it has already managed to become a known brand without actually spending much on branding.
\n

\n
Is Rivian stock a buy?
\n
All of these factors make Rivian look like an interesting company. However, it is worth noting that these factors could already be priced into the stock. With a market valuation of more than $100 billion, investors are pricing Rivian for perfection.
\n

\n
In addition to execution risks, challenges from competition also need to be considered. As an example, Ford already has nearly 200,000 reservations for its upcoming electric pickup truck, F-150 Lightning. And why not? The newly listed company has left the likes of Ford, General Motors, and Tesla behind in launching an all-electric pickup truck. It has also got more than 55,000 pre-orders for its pickup truck and SUV.\n\nYet, Rivian is at a very early stage, having delivered just 156 vehicles through October. Let's look at where the company and its stock could be five years from now.\n\nRivian's growth plans\nRivian plans to focus on the pickup truck, SUV, and commercial van market segments in the near term. Its focus geographies initially include the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe. In the long term, the company hopes to grow by entering new key markets as well as developing adjacent products. Rivian has started commercial production of its pickup truck R1T and plans to start production of its SUV -- R1S -- and electric delivery van in December.\n\n\nRivian's production facility in Normal, Illinois, has an estimated annual production capacity of 150,000 units. In addition to 55,000 pre-orders for R1T and R1S, Rivian has an agreement with Amazon for 100,000 delivery vans through 2030. However, Rivian expects to deliver all of the vans by as early as 2025.\n\nIt expects to deliver its pre-order backlog of 55,000 R1Ts and R1Ss by the end of 2023. Further, Rivian expects to reach an annual production rate of 150,000 vehicles (including commercial vehicles) by late 2023.\n\nIf things go as per Rivian's plan, the company would have delivered 55,000 pickup trucks and SUVs, in addition to, say, half of its 100,000 commercial delivery vans by the end of 2023. In five years, it could be producing 150,000 vehicles annually and might already be setting up a new production facility.\n\nWhat could support Rivian's growth\nIn addition to broader governmental and regulatory support for EVs, Rivian has some distinct advantages. First, it is targeting the pickup trucks and SUVs segment, which are among the highest-volume and most profitable auto segments. Similarly, e-commerce growth is pushing the demand for delivery vehicles -- another of Rivian's key segments. Logistics and e-commerce companies are transforming their fleets to electric vehicles, anticipating increased regulatory requirements for the same.\n\nFurther, Rivian's own charging network may help its growth. Additionally, the company intends to install more than 10,000 level 2 chargers through 2023.\n\nRivian's direct-to-customer model, with no dealer network, along with its own charging and service network could help it deliver an end-to-end differentiated customer experience. Over time, the company hopes to monetize this through high-value services and subscription opportunities, including membership and software services, financing, insurance, charging, maintenance, repair, as well as Rivian's own resale program.\n\nFinally, the recent interest in Rivian shows that it has already managed to become a known brand without actually spending much on branding.\n\nIs Rivian stock a buy?\nAll of these factors make Rivian look like an interesting company. However, it is worth noting that these factors could already be priced into the stock. With a market valuation of more than $100 billion, investors are pricing Rivian for perfection.\n\nIn addition to execution risks, challenges from competition also need to be considered. As an example, Ford already has nearly 200,000 reservations for its upcoming electric pickup truck, F-150 Lightning. Similarly, upcoming electric pickup trucks from Tesla, General Motors, and several others will further heat up competition for Rivian. Rivian still needs to prove that it can deliver vehicles profitably and scale up production as planned.\n\nOverall, though Rivian looks promising, its stock price could already be reflecting that. Investors will get more updates on the company's progress when it releases its third-quarter results on Dec. 16.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":844,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":605888107,"gmtCreate":1639144871406,"gmtModify":1639144871499,"author":{"id":"4097887764268680","authorId":"4097887764268680","name":"Kyeno","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d5becccf9434d4b95145e28591d97b5","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4097887764268680","authorIdStr":"4097887764268680"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nah . Nio is doing well so far despite the competition. Moreover, it is planning to start deliveries of its new luxury sedan, the ET7, early next year. The new sedan has some of the best features and technology available and should further boost Nio's growth.
\n
2. BYD is gaining ground silently
\n
While investors are focused on upcoming EV stocks, established Chinese automaker BYD has made a place for itself in the EV segment. According toCleanTechnica, BYD controls the highest share, 17%, of China's EV market, including plug-in hybrids. That's higher than the 16% market share controlled by a joint venture between SAIC Motor,General Motors, and Liuzhou Wuling Motors. By comparison, Tesla holds roughly 11% share of China's EV market.
\n
In November, sales of BYD's EV models grew 153% year over year to 46,137 units. Including plug-in hybrids, the company sold 90,121 units in the month.
\n
With a trailing-12-months revenue of $30.2 billion, BYD operates in three main segments. In 2020, the company earned 53% of its revenue from auto and related products, 39% from mobile handset components and assembly, and the remaining 8% from rechargeable batteries and solar products. Geographically, the company derived 61% of its revenue from China.
\n
With a high focus on EVs, these will likely form an increasingly higher portion of BYD's revenue mix in the coming years.
\n
3. Volkswagen has big EV ambitions
\n
EV investors would surely find value in top automaker Volkswagen. In the next few years, the company plans to invest 35 billion euros in electric mobility. It aims to increase its EV deliveries to 20% of its sales by 2025. By 2030, the company targets 60% of its sales in Europe to be EVs.
\n
In the first nine months, Volkswagen delivered nearly 7 million vehicles globally. Of these, roughly 293,000 were fully electric. An additional 246,000 were plug-in hybrid vehicles. So, electric or hybrid vehicles accounted for around 7.8% of the company's deliveries. For perspective, Tesla delivered 627,572 vehicles in the first nine months of this year. So, even though EVs form a small percentage of Volkswagen's total vehicle deliveries, its absolute EV deliveries are huge and will continue to grow. The reason seems sensible, even if his call might vex investors.
\n
Musk wants to minimize the cost of fourth quarter deliveries. He doesn’t see a reason for Tesla (ticker: TSLA) to overspend for a few weeks of any quarter only to see deliveries numbers crash in the first few weeks of the following quarter. It isn’t an optimal cycle for work or spending.
\n
“Looked at over a six month period, we won’t have any extra cars, but we would have spent a lot of extra money and burned ourselves out to accelerate deliveries in the last two weeks of each quarter,” reads the email. “This is [the] right time to start reducing the size of the wave in favor of a steadier and more efficient pace of deliveries.”
\n
It might be the right time because Tesla is going from having two plants producing cars to four plants. More assembly capacity might make it easier to manage the pace of deliveries in coming quarters.
\n
Investors, of course, want big delivery numbers and big earnings. And breaking the pattern of big end-of-quarter deliveries could cause some unwanted stock volatility when fourth quarter deliveries are reported in the early days of the new year.
\n
Still, Musk is setting expectations early and the change should be a one quarter impact — if the delivery pattern is smoothed out like Musk suggests.
\n
What’s more, investors can’t really assume the change will lead to bad delivery numbers or disappointing earnings. Musk might have decided to send the email because delivery numbers are looking solid. There is just no way to know. The reason seems sensible, even if his call might vex investors.\nMusk wants to minimize the cost of fourth quarter deliveries. He doesn’t see a reason for Tesla (ticker: TSLA) to overspend for a few weeks of any quarter only to see deliveries numbers crash in the first few weeks of the following quarter. It isn’t an optimal cycle for work or spending.\n“Looked at over a six month period, we won’t have any extra cars, but we would have spent a lot of extra money and burned ourselves out to accelerate deliveries in the last two weeks of each quarter,” reads the email. “This is [the] right time to start reducing the size of the wave in favor of a steadier and more efficient pace of deliveries.”\nIt might be the right time because Tesla is going from having two plants producing cars to four plants. More assembly capacity might make it easier to manage the pace of deliveries in coming quarters.\nInvestors, of course, want big delivery numbers and big earnings. And breaking the pattern of big end-of-quarter deliveries could cause some unwanted stock volatility when fourth quarter deliveries are reported in the early days of the new year.\nStill, Musk is setting expectations early and the change should be a one quarter impact — if the delivery pattern is smoothed out like Musk suggests.\nWhat’s more, investors can’t really assume the change will lead to bad delivery numbers or disappointing earnings. Musk might have decided to send the email because delivery numbers are looking solid. There is just no way to know. Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment on Sunday.\nIt’s also possible that automotive profit margins will improve if Tesla is spending less to deliver vehicles. That will be something to watch for when Tesla reports forth quarter earnings around the end of January 2022.\nWall Street is looking for 266,000 vehicles delivered for the fourth quarter. That would be a record and bring full year 2021 deliveries to just less than 900,000. Tesla delivered about 500,000 vehicles in 2020.\nThe recent delivery email follows after another email sent by Musk to managers that detailed how he expects managers to react to his comments. In it Musk said managers could request clarification of his written instructions, among other things. The newer email, however, seems clear.\nComing into Monday trading, Tesla stock is up about 53% year to date, better than the 22% and 14% comparable, respective returns of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":340,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":600263780,"gmtCreate":1638159383239,"gmtModify":1638159383323,"author":{"id":"4097887764268680","authorId":"4097887764268680","name":"Kyeno","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d5becccf9434d4b95145e28591d97b5","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4097887764268680","authorIdStr":"4097887764268680"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"If only life is as easy as just put and hold ","listText":"If only life is as easy as just put and hold ","text":"If only life is as easy as just put and hold","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/600263780","repostId":"2186432637","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":545,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":877909319,"gmtCreate":1637852609633,"gmtModify":1637852609633,"author":{"id":"4097887764268680","authorId":"4097887764268680","name":"Kyeno","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d5becccf9434d4b95145e28591d97b5","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4097887764268680","authorIdStr":"4097887764268680"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Another chance to tap on metaVerse ","listText":"Another chance to tap on metaVerse ","text":"Another chance to tap on metaVerse","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/877909319","repostId":"1107787773","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":381,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":877077598,"gmtCreate":1637852527475,"gmtModify":1637852527475,"author":{"id":"4097887764268680","authorId":"4097887764268680","name":"Kyeno","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d5becccf9434d4b95145e28591d97b5","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4097887764268680","authorIdStr":"4097887764268680"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Sure thing. He increased the firm’s price target for the shares from $1,298 to $1,580. Ferragu’s price target is incredibly bullish compared to his peers. The consensus price target for TLSA is sitting at$798.24.
\n
Of course, today’s news isn’t just that the New Street analyst is expecting major gains from Telsa, it’s also how quickly he expects them. Ferragu is estimating that TSLA stock will be trading at his price prediction by the end of the year.
\n
It’s also worth pointing out that the new price target has Ferragu keeping a buy rating for TSLA. For comparison, the analyst consensus rating is hold. That comes from 14 buys, 10, holds, and 10 sells.
\n
So why is this analyst taking such a bullish stance on TSLA stock? First off, the New Street analyst thinks that Tesla will surpass delivery estimates of 266,000 units in Q4. He increased the firm’s price target for the shares from $1,298 to $1,580. Ferragu’s price target is incredibly bullish compared to his peers. The consensus price target for TLSA is sitting at$798.24.\nOf course, today’s news isn’t just that the New Street analyst is expecting major gains from Telsa, it’s also how quickly he expects them. Ferragu is estimating that TSLA stock will be trading at his price prediction by the end of the year.\nIt’s also worth pointing out that the new price target has Ferragu keeping a buy rating for TSLA. For comparison, the analyst consensus rating is hold. That comes from 14 buys, 10, holds, and 10 sells.\nSo why is this analyst taking such a bullish stance on TSLA stock? First off, the New Street analyst thinks that Tesla will surpass delivery estimates of 266,000 units in Q4. This has him predicting between 280,000 and 285,000 deliveries during the period.\nAnother reason for the bull position from Ferragu is high expectations for the company’s Shanghai plant. But the truth is that there are ample undervalued opportunities even in this hot segment.
\n
Let's look at three such hidden gems in the electric vehicle space.
\n
\n
Valuation of EV stocks
\n
Trying to understand the valuations of EV stocks has become challenging lately. Not all EV stocks are getting valued the same way. As an example, consider Nio. The company sold 66,395 vehicles in the first nine months of 2021. Yet, its market capitalization is less than that of Lucid Group and Rivian, both of which have sold far fewer vehicles so far.
\n
NIO Market Cap data by YCharts
\n
With not much of a sales history, the price-to-sales ratios of Lucid and Rivian stocks are not meaningful. Although Nio's price-to-sales ratio of nearly 10 looks high, it pales when compared to Tesla's ratio of around 24.
\n
NIO PS Ratio data by YCharts
\n
For sure, Tesla commands a higher ratio for being the EV pioneer, with a strong brand image and innovative offerings. However, the premium compared to Nio looks outsized.
\n
Talking more about differences in EV valuations, pure-play EV manufacturers -- that offer only EVs -- typically get valued higher compared to legacy automakers, which are now entering in the EV segment. This is likely based either on hype, or on the opinion that pure-play EV makers can offer better EVs than legacy automakers. Neither of the two seems like a valid reason to avoid legacy automakers with solid EV ambitions.
\n
Two such companies are BYD and Volkswagen. As the above graph shows, the stocks of both these companies trade at a much lower price-to-sales ratio than that of Tesla or even Nio. Whichever way you slice or dice it, Nio, BYD, and Volkswagen stocks look better valued than most of their EV peers.
\n
1. There is a lot to like about Nio
\n
Investors will find Nio attractive for more than one reason. To begin with, the company operates in a leading and fast-growing market. Of the 2.6 million EVs sold globally in the first half of 2021, roughly 1.1 million were sold in China alone. Furthermore, in the first half of 2021, the number of EVs sold in China was equal to that sold in the country in all of 2020.
\n
Nio reported strong vehicle deliveries for November. Except for October, when the company reported lower deliveries due to planned upgrading of its manufacturing lines, Nio's deliveries are largely on an upward trend.
\n
The company faces stiff competition from local players, including BYD,Xpeng, and Li Auto, as well as global EV companies including Tesla.
But the truth is that there are ample undervalued opportunities even in this hot segment.\nLet's look at three such hidden gems in the electric vehicle space.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nValuation of EV stocks\nTrying to understand the valuations of EV stocks has become challenging lately. Not all EV stocks are getting valued the same way. As an example, consider Nio. The company sold 66,395 vehicles in the first nine months of 2021. Yet, its market capitalization is less than that of Lucid Group and Rivian, both of which have sold far fewer vehicles so far.\nNIO Market Cap data by YCharts\nWith not much of a sales history, the price-to-sales ratios of Lucid and Rivian stocks are not meaningful. Although Nio's price-to-sales ratio of nearly 10 looks high, it pales when compared to Tesla's ratio of around 24.\nNIO PS Ratio data by YCharts\nFor sure, Tesla commands a higher ratio for being the EV pioneer, with a strong brand image and innovative offerings. However, the premium compared to Nio looks outsized.\nTalking more about differences in EV valuations, pure-play EV manufacturers -- that offer only EVs -- typically get valued higher compared to legacy automakers, which are now entering in the EV segment. This is likely based either on hype, or on the opinion that pure-play EV makers can offer better EVs than legacy automakers. Neither of the two seems like a valid reason to avoid legacy automakers with solid EV ambitions.\nTwo such companies are BYD and Volkswagen. As the above graph shows, the stocks of both these companies trade at a much lower price-to-sales ratio than that of Tesla or even Nio. Whichever way you slice or dice it, Nio, BYD, and Volkswagen stocks look better valued than most of their EV peers.\n1. There is a lot to like about Nio\nInvestors will find Nio attractive for more than one reason. To begin with, the company operates in a leading and fast-growing market. Of the 2.6 million EVs sold globally in the first half of 2021, roughly 1.1 million were sold in China alone. Furthermore, in the first half of 2021, the number of EVs sold in China was equal to that sold in the country in all of 2020.\nNio reported strong vehicle deliveries for November. Except for October, when the company reported lower deliveries due to planned upgrading of its manufacturing lines, Nio's deliveries are largely on an upward trend.\nThe company faces stiff competition from local players, including BYD,Xpeng, and Li Auto, as well as global EV companies including Tesla. Nio is doing well so far despite the competition. Moreover, it is planning to start deliveries of its new luxury sedan, the ET7, early next year. The new sedan has some of the best features and technology available and should further boost Nio's growth.\n2. BYD is gaining ground silently\nWhile investors are focused on upcoming EV stocks, established Chinese automaker BYD has made a place for itself in the EV segment. According toCleanTechnica, BYD controls the highest share, 17%, of China's EV market, including plug-in hybrids. That's higher than the 16% market share controlled by a joint venture between SAIC Motor,General Motors, and Liuzhou Wuling Motors. By comparison, Tesla holds roughly 11% share of China's EV market.\nIn November, sales of BYD's EV models grew 153% year over year to 46,137 units. Including plug-in hybrids, the company sold 90,121 units in the month.\nWith a trailing-12-months revenue of $30.2 billion, BYD operates in three main segments. In 2020, the company earned 53% of its revenue from auto and related products, 39% from mobile handset components and assembly, and the remaining 8% from rechargeable batteries and solar products. Geographically, the company derived 61% of its revenue from China.\nWith a high focus on EVs, these will likely form an increasingly higher portion of BYD's revenue mix in the coming years.\n3. Volkswagen has big EV ambitions\nEV investors would surely find value in top automaker Volkswagen. In the next few years, the company plans to invest 35 billion euros in electric mobility. It aims to increase its EV deliveries to 20% of its sales by 2025. By 2030, the company targets 60% of its sales in Europe to be EVs.\nIn the first nine months, Volkswagen delivered nearly 7 million vehicles globally.
He finds that the addressable market in communications software is close to 30% of overall long-term enterprise software spending, in many cases replacing legacy hardware and services, and “continuing the general trend of software expansion into the broader economy.” Rangan concedes that cloud penetration in the communications sector so far is modest, but he sees growing acceptance, with industry growth of better than 30%.\nOn Zoom, Rangan writes that the company “remains poised to be one of the most strategic applications software companies” in the sector, but he notes that after a five-quarter period of hyper growth—with quarterly revenue expanding between 169% to 369% on a year-over-year basis—the company now faces challenging comparisons and much higher churn in small accounts. He thinks it will be a challenge for the company to sustain 25% growth longer term.
