That's got bulls cheering the stock’s recent run.</p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Tesla stock hit its lowest level since Oct. 22 and was down 27% from the highs.</p>\n<p>However, shares reversed off that low, climbing more than $50 a share by the close.</p>\n<p>That rally is extending itself Wednesday, with Tesla stock up more than 13% from yesterday’s low.</p>\n<p>Tesla stock was in focus this morning ahead of the open, rallying several percent on the hope that CEO Elon Musk would be done selling his shares.</p>\n<p>Musk said that he’s “sold enough” to meet his prior pledge. Earlier this week, Musk said he will pay more than $11 billion in taxes this year.</p>\n<p>If Musk really is done selling the stock — and he should be — then that big headwind will be out of the way and we may see it rebound higher. Now that it’s back above $1,000, we have to wonder if Tesla can climb to new highs.</p>\n<p><b>Trading Tesla Stock</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e32b497a2bbfdad887112e45eeb92adb\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"866\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Daily chart of Tesla stock.</span></p>\n<p>The stock traded down into the $910 gap-fill level and prior all-time high at $900, and found its footing.</p>\n<p>If we get specific, the 21-week moving average and the 200-unit moving average on the four-hour chart were also nearby.</p>\n<p>In any regard, Tesla shares are ripping higher now, trading up through the 10-day moving average and hovering around the key $1,000 level, which has been a key pivot since late October.</p>\n<p>If it can maintain above $1,000, the next obvious area comes into play near $1,025 to $1,035. There Tesla stock finds its 21-day and 50-day moving averages.</p>\n<p>That should be an area to take a pause, but if Tesla is able to push through this zone, then the $1,100 level and downtrend resistance (blue line) are in play.</p>\n<p>On the downside, let’s see if shares struggle with $1,000. But the best may still be yet to come. In addition to its new luxury ET7 sedan that will begin shipping in March 2022, the new ET5 is also expected to start deliveries in September 2022.</p>\n<p>The ET5 will be available with Nio's largest battery that will provide a range of up to about 620 miles on a single charge. Today, shares dropped 1.03% and continued to slide 1.34% in extended hours. \nSo what\nNio hasn't put out any company-specific news today, but it introduced its new ET5 electric sedan last weekend, which it hopes will compete with Tesla's(NASDAQ:TSLA)Model 3. WithTesla CEO Elon Musk making news again today, it may be that investors are shunning Nio shares for Tesla stock. But Nio has more than just the ET5 in its plans to expand from here.\nNow what\nNio has increased its electric car deliveries by 120.4% through November 2021 versus the comparable year-ago period. But the best may still be yet to come. In addition to its new luxury ET7 sedan that will begin shipping in March 2022, the new ET5 is also expected to start deliveries in September 2022.\nThe ET5 will be available with Nio's largest battery that will provide a range of up to about 620 miles on a single charge. And Nio CEO William Li told local media that the ET5, which was officially unveiled Saturday, has already become the most pre-ordered Nio model ever. That is according to CnEVPost, an industry news service focused on the Chinese EV sector.\nNio also plans to move beyond China in 2022. It already sells its vehicles in Norway and expects to be doing business in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark in 2022. The company says it will have a presence in over 25 countries by 2025. RIVN stock fell 10% as a result of a top- and bottom-line miss, the company’s first report as a public company.\nEven with the drop, Rivian commands a market capitalization of $84 billion. That’s more than Ford(NYSE:F) and General Motors(NYSE:GM). That’s crazy!\nThe valuation with electric vehicle (EV) stocks has gone bananas.\nIn the pre-EV days, automakers were assigned insultingly low valuations. Perhaps we’re in the midst of a great “rerating” in terms of valuation, but building EVs vs. traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehiclesshouldn’tcreate such disparity with the valuation.\nThat’s where we find ourselves though, as investors wonder if this shift is permanent or temporary.\nI don’t have anything personal against RIVN stock, but I personally find its valuation to be too high. Shares trade at about 10.4 times 2023 estimates, estimates of which may very well may be too optimistic in the first place.\nThat’s got me comparing it to other automakers, namely Ford.\nRIVN Stock vs. F Stock\nRivian does not generate meaningful revenue at the moment, although it does have a partnership with Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN). The latter also owns a 20% stake in the company, for what it’s worth.\nEstimates currently call for $3.45 billion in sales next year for Rivian, although that estimate is at risk (in my opinion) as management has said supply chain issues could negatively impact deliveries. On the plus side, there are 71,000 RI reservations for its new vehicle.That’s up 48% in the last two and a half months.\nBut then you flip around to Ford and ask yourself, “If Rivian is worth $84 billion, why is Ford only worth $80 billion?”\nThe company is forecast to generate ~$127 billion in sales in 2021, up 9.5% year over year. In 2022 and 2023, estimates sit at $145.3 billion and $164 billion, respectively.\nThe latter figure is almost 20 times larger than the $8.4 billion Rivian is forecast to generate that year. Now that comparison is a bit like apples to oranges, but it highlights the difference between these two companies and what stage they are at.\nRivian is like the kid that walked into the office and was promoted to VP on their first day. Ford has been there for 30 years and still can’t make partner.\nTruck vs. Truck\nFord is making a serious transition toward EVs. It already has its Mustang Mach E on the road, with the E-Transit on the way. Ford even has a pilot program to help companies integrate the E-Transit into their fleets.\nBut the crown jewel is the F-150 Lightning.\nThe F-Series pickup truck is the best sellingvehiclein the U.S. and has been for more than four decades. While Rivian has an impressive 71,000 reservations, Ford stopped taking reservations for its F-150 Lightning, as the list topped 200,000.\nDemand is clearly through the roof here. While that has many investors optimistic on the future of EV and specifically on Rivian, why don’t they see the competition that’s coming down the pike?\nIt would be one thing if Rivian was going to enter the electric pickup truck market with no competition. But the fact that it’s fighting the electrification of the country’s best-selling pickup and vehicle,andgoing up againstTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), GM and others, should have investors asking some questions.\nNamely this: Is RIVN stock overvalued or is F stock undervalued — or is it both?\nGranted, the R1T has a better EPA-estimated driving range for its base model than the base model for Ford’s Lightning. That said, Ford’s electric pickup starts at around $40,000 and can get an upgrade to its range, while the R1T has a starting price of roughly $67,500.\nFord expects to “increase its production capacity of electric vehicles to 600,000 units globally by 2023.” Further, CEO Jim Farley “expects that would make the company the second-largest U.S.-based producer of EVs,” just behind Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA).\nFor what it’s worth, General Motors will likely be in that mix as well, with management previously stating it expects to produce 1 million EVs by 2025.\nBottom Line on RIVN Stock\nI must repeat again that I don’t have anything personal against Rivian. I actually really like EVs and autonomous driving systems and I covered the space for years.\nBut the sudden fascination with this industry — shown via the valuations — has me asking some questions as to how it’s justified. Working on both projects at the same time made sense. It would enable it to launch an EV before fully autonomous capabilities became available.</p>\n<p>But now, with a new leader in charge of the project (Kevin Lynch),Apple is putting all its eggs in the fully autonomous basket. Speeding up its timeline, the company is targeting a 2025 release date for its fully autonomous EV.</p>\n<p>Given its track record, there are high expectations that Apple will meet this deadline and bring out a possible “Tesla killer” in less than four years. However, that’s not to say it’s a foregone conclusion.</p>\n<p><b>The Apple Maven’s Take</b></p>\n<p>Unlike its metaverse catalyst, the Apple Car may offer a lot more upside potential. As Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty argued back in November, its launch of a fully self-driving EV could ultimately double both its revenue and market cap.</p>\n<p>The sell-side analyst pointed to many factors to support her case — the company’s large customer base, for one. Also, there is Apple’s past success diving into uncharted territory. For example, the company was a latecomer to mobile communication devices when it launched the iPhone, but it currently holds 23% of the market and growing.</p>\n<p>That said, while it has a strong chance of finding success, the Apple Car could still hiccup moving to the delivery stage. In fact, it’s already dealing with some hurdles right now, as seen from recent news of the project losing key engineers to rivals.</p>\n<p>On top of this, with AAPL stock already trading at a stretched forward earnings multiple, this catalyst may already be factored into its valuation. Ms. Huberty sees EV as something that could one day double the share price. Still, her current price target of $200 per share is less than 20% above the $170 per share that AAPL trades for today — suggesting that much of the Apple Car upside to the stock may not come until beyond 2022.</p>\n<p>Bottom line: the Apple Car may be something that helps the company and stock deliver solid long-term financial results and market gains, respectively. Earlier this week, Musk said he will pay more than $11 billion in taxes this year.</p>\n<p>If Musk really is done selling the stock — and he should be — then that big headwind will be out of the way and we may see it rebound higher. Now that it’s back above $1,000, we have to wonder if Tesla can climb to new highs.</p>\n<p><b>Trading Tesla Stock</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e32b497a2bbfdad887112e45eeb92adb\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"866\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Daily chart of Tesla stock.</span></p>\n<p>The stock traded down into the $910 gap-fill level and prior all-time high at $900, and found its footing.</p>\n<p>If we get specific, the 21-week moving average and the 200-unit moving average on the four-hour chart were also nearby.</p>\n<p>In any regard, Tesla shares are ripping higher now, trading up through the 10-day moving average and hovering around the key $1,000 level, which has been a key pivot since late October.</p>\n<p>If it can maintain above $1,000, the next obvious area comes into play near $1,025 to $1,035. There Tesla stock finds its 21-day and 50-day moving averages.</p>\n<p>That should be an area to take a pause, but if Tesla is able to push through this zone, then the $1,100 level and downtrend resistance (blue line) are in play.</p>\n<p>On the downside, let’s see if shares struggle with $1,000. However, before putting in a buy order, let’s take a closer look at this catalyst, and its potential near and long-term impact on Apple shares.</p>\n<p><b>AAPL Stock and its Apple Car Catalyst</b></p>\n<p>Before diving in, here’s a brief overview of Apple and its EV project. For years, the company has been at work developing an electric vehicle.</p>\n<p>Before, it was designing both a limited self-driving vehicle, as well as a fully self-driving vehicle. Working on both projects at the same time made sense. It would enable it to launch an EV before fully autonomous capabilities became available.</p>\n<p>But now, with a new leader in charge of the project (Kevin Lynch),Apple is putting all its eggs in the fully autonomous basket. Speeding up its timeline, the company is targeting a 2025 release date for its fully autonomous EV.</p>\n<p>Given its track record, there are high expectations that Apple will meet this deadline and bring out a possible “Tesla killer” in less than four years. However, that’s not to say it’s a foregone conclusion.</p>\n<p><b>The Apple Maven’s Take</b></p>\n<p>Unlike its metaverse catalyst, the Apple Car may offer a lot more upside potential. As Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty argued back in November, its launch of a fully self-driving EV could ultimately double both its revenue and market cap.</p>\n<p>The sell-side analyst pointed to many factors to support her case — the company’s large customer base, for one. Also, there is Apple’s past success diving into uncharted territory. For example, the company was a latecomer to mobile communication devices when it launched the iPhone, but it currently holds 23% of the market and growing.</p>\n<p>That said, while it has a strong chance of finding success, the Apple Car could still hiccup moving to the delivery stage. In fact, it’s already dealing with some hurdles right now, as seen from recent news of the project losing key engineers to rivals.</p>\n<p>On top of this, with AAPL stock already trading at a stretched forward earnings multiple, this catalyst may already be factored into its valuation. Ms. Huberty sees EV as something that could one day double the share price. Still, her current price target of $200 per share is less than 20% above the $170 per share that AAPL trades for today — suggesting that much of the Apple Car upside to the stock may not come until beyond 2022.</p>\n<p>Bottom line: the Apple Car may be something that helps the company and stock deliver solid long-term financial results and market gains, respectively. RIVN stock fell 10% as a result of a top- and bottom-line miss, the company’s first report as a public company.\nEven with the drop, Rivian commands a market capitalization of $84 billion. That’s more than Ford(NYSE:F) and General Motors(NYSE:GM). That’s crazy!\nThe valuation with electric vehicle (EV) stocks has gone bananas.\nIn the pre-EV days, automakers were assigned insultingly low valuations. Perhaps we’re in the midst of a great “rerating” in terms of valuation, but building EVs vs. traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehiclesshouldn’tcreate such disparity with the valuation.\nThat’s where we find ourselves though, as investors wonder if this shift is permanent or temporary.\nI don’t have anything personal against RIVN stock, but I personally find its valuation to be too high. Shares trade at about 10.4 times 2023 estimates, estimates of which may very well may be too optimistic in the first place.\nThat’s got me comparing it to other automakers, namely Ford.\nRIVN Stock vs. F Stock\nRivian does not generate meaningful revenue at the moment, although it does have a partnership with Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN). The latter also owns a 20% stake in the company, for what it’s worth.\nEstimates currently call for $3.45 billion in sales next year for Rivian, although that estimate is at risk (in my opinion) as management has said supply chain issues could negatively impact deliveries. On the plus side, there are 71,000 RI reservations for its new vehicle.That’s up 48% in the last two and a half months.\nBut then you flip around to Ford and ask yourself, “If Rivian is worth $84 billion, why is Ford only worth $80 billion?”\nThe company is forecast to generate ~$127 billion in sales in 2021, up 9.5% year over year. In 2022 and 2023, estimates sit at $145.3 billion and $164 billion, respectively.\nThe latter figure is almost 20 times larger than the $8.4 billion Rivian is forecast to generate that year. Now that comparison is a bit like apples to oranges, but it highlights the difference between these two companies and what stage they are at.\nRivian is like the kid that walked into the office and was promoted to VP on their first day. Ford has been there for 30 years and still can’t make partner.\nTruck vs. Truck\nFord is making a serious transition toward EVs. It already has its Mustang Mach E on the road, with the E-Transit on the way. Ford even has a pilot program to help companies integrate the E-Transit into their fleets.\nBut the crown jewel is the F-150 Lightning.\nThe F-Series pickup truck is the best sellingvehiclein the U.S. and has been for more than four decades. While Rivian has an impressive 71,000 reservations, Ford stopped taking reservations for its F-150 Lightning, as the list topped 200,000.\nDemand is clearly through the roof here. While that has many investors optimistic on the future of EV and specifically on Rivian, why don’t they see the competition that’s coming down the pike?\nIt would be one thing if Rivian was going to enter the electric pickup truck market with no competition. But the fact that it’s fighting the electrification of the country’s best-selling pickup and vehicle,andgoing up againstTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), GM and others, should have investors asking some questions.\nNamely this: Is RIVN stock overvalued or is F stock undervalued — or is it both?\nGranted, the R1T has a better EPA-estimated driving range for its base model than the base model for Ford’s Lightning. That said, Ford’s electric pickup starts at around $40,000 and can get an upgrade to its range, while the R1T has a starting price of roughly $67,500.\nFord expects to “increase its production capacity of electric vehicles to 600,000 units globally by 2023.” Further, CEO Jim Farley “expects that would make the company the second-largest U.S.-based producer of EVs,” just behind Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA).\nFor what it’s worth, General Motors will likely be in that mix as well, with management previously stating it expects to produce 1 million EVs by 2025.\nBottom Line on RIVN Stock\nI must repeat again that I don’t have anything personal against Rivian. I actually really like EVs and autonomous driving systems and I covered the space for years.\nBut the sudden fascination with this industry — shown via the valuations — has me asking some questions as to how it’s justified.
