The company unveiled its electric F-150 Lightning truck last month and also told investors that it now expects electric vehicles to account for 40% of global sales by 2030.</p>\n<p>And GM (GM) is up more than 40% as well. The Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac maker said this month that it's looking to spend a whopping $35 billion on EVs by 2025.</p>\n<p>It seems investors are a bit infatuated with these legacy Big 3 automakers as they look to rapidly expand their electric car offerings to catch up with Tesla.</p>\n<p>Tesla is still growing incredibly quickly. Analysts expect earnings per share to more than double this year and increase at an average rate of about 45% annually over the next few years.</p>\n<p>Yet Tesla is one of the most polarizing stocks on Wall Street.</p>\n<p>According to Refinitiv, 14 analysts have the stock rated a \"buy,\" 13 a \"hold\" and 10 a \"sell.\" Contrast that with GM, which has 20 buy ratings, two holds and no sells.</p>\n<p><b>Skeptics have many questions about Tesla and Musk</b></p>\n<p>The consensus target price for Tesla stock from analysts is $652, about 6% lower than its current price.</p>\n<p>Tesla critics have a pile of worries to point to. A notable short seller who was featured in \"The Big Short\" is betting against the company. Concerns about Tesla's management bench sprung up after longtime executive Jerome Guillen abruptly left earlier this month — especially since CEO Elon Musk is also busy running SpaceX.</p>\n<p>And Musk's obsession with bitcoin and dogecoin, along with other extracurricular activities like hosting Saturday Night Live and constantly tweeting, might be a turnoff for some investors and analysts.</p>\n<p>Still, there is no denying that the company has plenty of ardent fans, and its vehicles have grabbed plenty of positive headlines this week alone.</p>\n<p>For example, Cars.com (CARS) announced earlier this week that Tesla's Model 3 was ranked first in its American-Made Index, which measures how much a vehicle contributes to the US economy based on factors such as domestic factory jobs, manufacturing plants and parts sourcing.</p>\n<p>The Model 3 edged out Ford's Mustang for the top spot, and Tesla's Model Y also ranked third on the list. He's forecasting 929,000 deliveries this year, up from about 500,000 in 2020.</p>\n<p>This bullish take on Tesla's business added weight to another analyst's optimistic remarks Monday.</p>\n<p><b>Now what</b></p>\n<p>Tesla is rapidly building out its production capacity this year for both its vehicles and its battery cells. For now, demand seems to be growing in line with that rapidly increasing production. But the sample size is only one stock.</p>\n<p>NIO shares (NIO) are down more than 6% in Friday trading after the EV maker reduced guidance for first-quarter deliveries from about 20,250 cars to about 19,500. NIO management cited the chip shortage and is shutting a manufacturing plant for five days starting March 29.</p>\n<p>For Tesla, Wall Street is looking for about 162,000 vehicles delivered in March. That’s down from a peak estimate of about 183,000 vehicles. Analysts seem to be reducing numbers, possibly because of the shortage.</p>\n<p>Tesla delivered about 181,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter. For the full year 2021, analysts are looking for almost 800,000 vehicle deliveries, up about 60% year over year.</p>\n<p>RBC analyst Joe Spak is forecasting 170,000 first-quarter deliveries, up more than 90% year over year. He also forecasts Tesla will make 96,000 cars in California and 74,000 cars in China during the quarter. “Consensus [estimate] looks mostly reasonable,” wrote Spak in a Thursday report. “We do look for updates to see how the semi shortage is impacting Tesla—as it has the rest of the industry.” He sees some additional downside risk to estimates, especially for second-quarter numbers, because of chips.</p>\n<p>Spak rates Tesla stock Hold and has a $725 price target for shares.</p>\n<p>In the case of Tesla stock, the chip shortage has taken a back seat to rising interest rates. The Invesco QQQ ETF(QQQ), which tracks the 100 largest stocks in the Nasdaq, was down 3%.</p><p>The Dow-Nasdaq performance illustrates what’s going on with shares of Tesla, the electric vehicle pioneer, as well as tradition automakers General Motors (GM) andFordMotor (F).</p><p>The Nasdaq is a market-capitalization weighted index. A handful of big tech names, including Tesla, make up about 40% of the index. The Dow, on the other hand, is weighted by stock price--UnitedHealth(UNH),Boeing(BA),Amgen(AMGN),Goldman Sachs(GS) and Home Depot(HD) are its biggest weightings.</p><p>Higher interest rates hurt growth stocks more than others for two reasons. First, high-growth companies typically need new capital to finance growth, and higher interest rates makes that more expensive. Second, higher-growth companies generate most of their free cash flow far in the future, which is worth less--relatively speaking--than cash generated right now by more mature companies.</p><p>The U.S. 10-year Treasury Bond yield rose higher than 1.7% Thursday, up from 1.3% about a month ago. The rise is playing havoc on EV stock prices. Tesla shares are down about 15% over the past month.NIO (NIO) stock is down 22%. And XPeng (XPEV) stock is off by about 13%.</p><p>Higher rates haven’thurt traditional auto maker stocks--at all. General Motors shares are up about 14% over the past month. Ford shares have gained 10%.</p><p>Higher rates also help GM and Ford because of their large pension obligations.</p><p>GM and Ford pensions, on a combined bases, are about $20 billion underfunded. They have promised pension payments to employees that are worth roughly $175 billion. The two have set aside assets to pay worth about $155 billion.</p><p>That’s a lot of money, but pension deficits are helped by rising rates.</p><p>Pension obligations are a stream of cash flows paid far into the future. There’s no maturity date, like with a bond, when the company owes a large fixed amount. In addition, regulators require companies to discount the pension obligations at low rates of interest. Here’s the logic: The cash should be discounted at a government bond yield because that rate will determine the size of the cash pile needed if all the pension assets were invested in those government bonds.</p><p>When interest rates are low, the cash pile needs to be huge. Consider, the 10-year treasury bond yield is about 1.6%, and GM and Ford pay out roughly $10 billion in pension benefits combined. If they bought 10-year bonds to make the payments, they would need $630 billion to pay obligations using just the interest on those bonds. But if government bonds yielded 5%, the cash pile would need to be only $200 billion.</p><p>However, the auto makers, and other companies with pension obligations, invest pension assets in stocks and corporate bonds and have earned much more than government bond yields historically. In that way, the pension deficit is always overstated. A good rule of thumb for investors is that if a pension plan detailed in an annual report is 85% or 90% funded, then extra cash won’t be needed to top up pension assets and the company’s plan is in pretty good shape.</p><p>It’s an odd reason that investors have to cheer for higher interest rates in the case of GM and Ford. The Nasdaq Composite is off 3%. The S&P 500 is down 1.5%. Only the Dow Jones Industrial Average is hanging on, down only 0.5%. The Invesco QQQ ETF(QQQ), which tracks the 100 largest stocks in the Nasdaq, was down 3%.The Dow-Nasdaq performance illustrates what’s going on with shares of Tesla, the electric vehicle pioneer, as well as tradition automakers General Motors (GM) andFordMotor (F).The Nasdaq is a market-capitalization weighted index. A handful of big tech names, including Tesla, make up about 40% of the index. The Dow, on the other hand, is weighted by stock price--UnitedHealth(UNH),Boeing(BA),Amgen(AMGN),Goldman Sachs(GS) and Home Depot(HD) are its biggest weightings.Higher interest rates hurt growth stocks more than others for two reasons. First, high-growth companies typically need new capital to finance growth, and higher interest rates makes that more expensive. Second, higher-growth companies generate most of their free cash flow far in the future, which is worth less--relatively speaking--than cash generated right now by more mature companies.The U.S. 10-year Treasury Bond yield rose higher than 1.7% Thursday, up from 1.3% about a month ago. The rise is playing havoc on EV stock prices. Tesla shares are down about 15% over the past month.NIO (NIO) stock is down 22%. And XPeng (XPEV) stock is off by about 13%.Higher rates haven’thurt traditional auto maker stocks--at all. General Motors shares are up about 14% over the past month. Ford shares have gained 10%.Higher rates also help GM and Ford because of their large pension obligations.GM and Ford pensions, on a combined bases, are about $20 billion underfunded. They have promised pension payments to employees that are worth roughly $175 billion. The two have set aside assets to pay worth about $155 billion.That’s a lot of money, but pension deficits are helped by rising rates.Pension obligations are a stream of cash flows paid far into the future. There’s no maturity date, like with a bond, when the company owes a large fixed amount. In addition, regulators require companies to discount the pension obligations at low rates of interest. Here’s the logic: The cash should be discounted at a government bond yield because that rate will determine the size of the cash pile needed if all the pension assets were invested in those government bonds.When interest rates are low, the cash pile needs to be huge. Consider, the 10-year treasury bond yield is about 1.6%, and GM and Ford pay out roughly $10 billion in pension benefits combined. If they bought 10-year bonds to make the payments, they would need $630 billion to pay obligations using just the interest on those bonds. But if government bonds yielded 5%, the cash pile would need to be only $200 billion.However, the auto makers, and other companies with pension obligations, invest pension assets in stocks and corporate bonds and have earned much more than government bond yields historically. In that way, the pension deficit is always overstated. A good rule of thumb for investors is that if a pension plan detailed in an annual report is 85% or 90% funded, then extra cash won’t be needed to top up pension assets and the company’s plan is in pretty good shape.It’s an odd reason that investors have to cheer for higher interest rates in the case of GM and Ford. Tesla investors want growth, and the chip situation is squeezing growth. Both General Motors(GM) and Ford Motor(F) have taken unexpected plant downtime recently and have called the chip issue a billion-dollar profit headwind for 2021. That’s not what investors want to hear.</p>\n<p>Everyone is aware of the issue. Still, when first-quarter data is released, investors have to decide whether or not to give Tesla, or any other fast-growing EV maker, a pass if results are weaker than expected.</p>\n<p>So far the market isn’t feeling charitable. But the sample size is only one stock.</p>\n<p>NIO shares (NIO) are down more than 6% in Friday trading after the EV maker reduced guidance for first-quarter deliveries from about 20,250 cars to about 19,500. NIO management cited the chip shortage and is shutting a manufacturing plant for five days starting March 29.</p>\n<p>For Tesla, Wall Street is looking for about 162,000 vehicles delivered in March. That’s down from a peak estimate of about 183,000 vehicles. Analysts seem to be reducing numbers, possibly because of the shortage.</p>\n<p>Tesla delivered about 181,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter. For the full year 2021, analysts are looking for almost 800,000 vehicle deliveries, up about 60% year over year.</p>\n<p>RBC analyst Joe Spak is forecasting 170,000 first-quarter deliveries, up more than 90% year over year. He also forecasts Tesla will make 96,000 cars in California and 74,000 cars in China during the quarter. “Consensus [estimate] looks mostly reasonable,” wrote Spak in a Thursday report. “We do look for updates to see how the semi shortage is impacting Tesla—as it has the rest of the industry.” He sees some additional downside risk to estimates, especially for second-quarter numbers, because of chips.</p>\n<p>Spak rates Tesla stock Hold and has a $725 price target for shares.</p>\n<p>In the case of Tesla stock, the chip shortage has taken a back seat to rising interest rates. Rising rateshit growth stocksin two main ways. For starters, it makes growth more expensive to finance. NIO isn’t profitable yet. High-growth companies generate most of their cash flow far in the future. That cash flow is worth a little less, relatively speaking, when investors can earn higher interest rates on their cash today.</p>\n<p>Tesla stock is down roughly 10% year to date after rising more than 740% in 2020. Shares are down 0.9% in early Friday trading, at $634.40. That means more delivery data from auto makers is due. For investors, the figures will be higher stakes than usual. The reason is simple: The global automotive microchip shortage is roiling the entire car business.\nNumbers will matter even more for richly valued, high-growth companies such as Tesla(ticker: TSLA). Tesla investors want growth, and the chip situation is squeezing growth. Both General Motors(GM) and Ford Motor(F) have taken unexpected plant downtime recently and have called the chip issue a billion-dollar profit headwind for 2021. That’s not what investors want to hear.\nEveryone is aware of the issue. Still, when first-quarter data is released, investors have to decide whether or not to give Tesla, or any other fast-growing EV maker, a pass if results are weaker than expected.\nSo far the market isn’t feeling charitable. But the sample size is only one stock.\nNIO shares (NIO) are down more than 6% in Friday trading after the EV maker reduced guidance for first-quarter deliveries from about 20,250 cars to about 19,500. NIO management cited the chip shortage and is shutting a manufacturing plant for five days starting March 29.\nFor Tesla, Wall Street is looking for about 162,000 vehicles delivered in March. That’s down from a peak estimate of about 183,000 vehicles. Analysts seem to be reducing numbers, possibly because of the shortage.\nTesla delivered about 181,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter. For the full year 2021, analysts are looking for almost 800,000 vehicle deliveries, up about 60% year over year.\nRBC analyst Joe Spak is forecasting 170,000 first-quarter deliveries, up more than 90% year over year. He also forecasts Tesla will make 96,000 cars in California and 74,000 cars in China during the quarter. “Consensus [estimate] looks mostly reasonable,” wrote Spak in a Thursday report. “We do look for updates to see how the semi shortage is impacting Tesla—as it has the rest of the industry.” He sees some additional downside risk to estimates, especially for second-quarter numbers, because of chips.\nSpak rates Tesla stock Hold and has a $725 price target for shares.\nIn the case of Tesla stock, the chip shortage has taken a back seat to rising interest rates. Rising rateshit growth stocksin two main ways. For starters, it makes growth more expensive to finance. NIO isn’t profitable yet. High-growth companies generate most of their cash flow far in the future. That cash flow is worth a little less, relatively speaking, when investors can earn higher interest rates on their cash today.\nTesla stock is down roughly 10% year to date after rising more than 740% in 2020. Shares are down 0.9% in early Friday trading, at $634.40.
