Level 2 means drivers need to watch the road at all times. The new version is the same kind of system. It makes driving easier and more convenient, but there are no systems that allow drivers to stop paying attention to driving altogether. The button went live on Friday.\n\nTesla’s new system will do things such as make left turns for the driver. Tesla has let some drivers test the system before now. Many videos from testers that review the capabilities—and issues—with the system are available on YouTube. \n\nJust hitting the button isn’t all Tesla drivers have to do. The button doesn’t grant access to the new version automatically. Tesla judges driving behavior for a week before the upgrade is activated.\n\nRegulators have expressed nervousness about the launch and calling a safety feature a “beta” version. But beyond that, nothing much has happened. Investors can expect more to happen in coming weeks, including videos, tweets, and stories about Tesla’s full self-driving software and what regulators are thinking about it.\nTesla hasn’t responded to multiple requests for comment about FSD, but the company has said in many public forums that it believes FSD software makes its vehicles safer to drive.\nTesla FSD is a so-called Level 2 autonomous-driving system. Level 2 means drivers need to watch the road at all times. The new version is the same kind of system. It makes driving easier and more convenient, but there are no systems that allow drivers to stop paying attention to driving altogether. That’s what Tesla, and the rest of the auto industry, wants to achieve years down the road.\n\nTesla stock, for its part, is at its highest level in months. Autonomous-driving features are just too new and the systems are changing too rapidly.</p>\n<p>The job for investors, right now, is to understand exactly who is saying what about car makers’ competing autonomous-driving systems. Learning the bull and bear arguments is enough for now. Figuring out who is leading and what it means for the stocks of the car makers can come later.</p>\n<p>The highly anticipated Tesla(ticker: TSLA) A.I. Day was supposed to shed light on the topic of autonomous driving. Instead, it opened a Pandora’s box of questions that need answering.</p>\n<p>What investors really wanted to know was when drivers will be able to text and drive safely on highways without fear of getting a traffic ticket. That answer wasn’t forthcoming. Instead, investors were asked to digest the importance of computer- designed self-driving simulations, machine learning, and cloud-based A.I. training technology. The detail was arcane.</p>\n<p>Tesla bulls, however, came away from the event blown away by Tesla’s A.I. prowess and the improvements to its autonomous-driving features. New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu wrote Monday that Tesla is 10 years ahead of the competition in “real-world” artificial intelligence. He believes Tesla’s autonomous- driving subscription sales can generate about $23,000 in gross profit per vehicle over a 10-year span. That is significantly more than the roughly $7,000 in gross profit Tesla makes from selling a car.</p>\n<p>He rates Tesla stock at Buy and has a target of $900 for the stock price. Shares closed Monday at $706.30, up 3.8%.</p>\n<p>Tesla bears, on the other hand, are convinced that Tesla’s claims about self- driving cars are overstated and that other companies are doing a better job developing self-driving technology.</p>\n<p>The bears’ belief is partly rooted in two reports from the research firm Guidehouse, which publishes automated-driving “leaderboards.” Tesla ranked dead last in the 2020 and 2021 reports.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7b2c9c6aae99c5231a325bf541cf4dca\" tg-width=\"553\" tg-height=\"915\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>That might feel odd, given that Tesla CEO Elon Musk often talks about how advanced Tesla’s self-driving offerings are. But the Guidehouse rankings are partly based on vision systems and partnerships, two areas where Tesla doesn’t score well. The company doesn’t use laser-based radar, while other makers of self-driving cars do. And it doesn’t enter partnerships, doing everything in house.</p>\n<p>It is possible that bulls and bears are both right and are talking past each other. Waymo, for instance, leads in the Guidehouse rankings. It has deployed fully autonomous robotaxis in Arizona. That is quite a feat.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s systems aren’t good enough to be robotaxis. They qualify as level 2 autonomy, which means drivers must be engaged at all times. But the systems enabling the Waymo robotaxi can cost upwards of $100,000 per vehicle. That is too pricey for consumer vehicles.</p>\n<p>In October 2020,<i>Consumer Reports</i> ranked the automated-driving systems available to, well, consumers. Overall, Tesla’s automated driver system ranked second to General Motors(GM). Tesla scored highest on capability and ease of use, but ranked poorly on keeping the driver engaged.</p>\n<p>One reason for that low score might be that Tesla’s automated-driving systems aren’t “hands free” solutions. Drivers need to keep their hands on, or touching, the steering wheel to keep the system on. There are “hands free” systems that use interior cameras to make sure a driver’s eyes are on the road at all times.</p>\n<p>Camera monitoring might be better than haptic steering-wheel feedback. That is a debate for car companies and regulators.</p>\n<p>Practically speaking, hands free and hands required isn’t the basis for competitive differentiation. All the systems on offer today, hands free or not, require drivers to be engaged 100% of the time.</p>\n<p>Autonomous driving studies and reports will proliferate in coming years. Each will have different criteria for judging what is best. Eventually, investors will probably have to test out autonomous-driving systems for themselves. That way they won’t fall victim to ratings criteria that aren’t explicitly defined.</p>\n<p>Tesla stock is about flat so far in 2021. Revenue hit $12 billion</b></p>\n<p>Helped by a 121% year-over-year increase in vehicle deliveries, Tesla's revenue surged 98% year over year to approximately $12 billion. This crushed analysts' average forecast for revenue of $11.3 billion.</p>\n<p><b>2. Profits skyrocketed</b></p>\n<p>Of course, with revenue like this, it wasn't surprising to see profits soar. Net income increased from $104 million in the year-ago period to $1.14 billion. Non-GAAP (adjusted) net income increased 258% year over year to $1.6 billion. This translated to non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.45 -- far ahead of a consensus analyst estimate of $0.98.</p>\n<p>The outsized growth in Tesla's profits demonstrates the scalability of the company's business model.</p>\n<p><b>3. Free cash flow remains healthy</b></p>\n<p>Tesla once again generated positive free cash flow, or cash flow from operations less capital expenditures. Free cash flow for the period increased from $418 million in the year-ago period to $619 million.</p>\n<p>Total cash on hand fell from $17.1 billion in the first quarter of 2021 to $16.2 billion but this was primarily due to $1.6 billion in net debt and finance lease repayments.</p>\n<p><b>4. Vehicle demand is robust</b></p>\n<p>Tesla once again said demand for its vehicles achieved record levels. Indeed, demand is so robust that the company is supply constrained. \"Global demand continues to be robust, and we are producing at the limits of available parts supply,\" Tesla explained.</p>\n<p><b>5. There's more sharp growth to come</b></p>\n<p>Importantly, Tesla remains optimistic about its growth trajectory. The company says it continues to expect to grow its total deliveries more than 50% year over year this year. This implies 2021 total deliveries of more than 750,000. So far, Tesla has delivered more than 386,000 vehicles this year.</p>\n<p>\"The rate of growth will depend on our equipment capacity, operational efficiency, and the capacity and stability of the supply chain,\" Tesla noted.</p>\n<h4>Four Challenges to Tesla’s Growth</h4>\n<p>However,investors are concerned with several factors that may slow Tesla's feverish share price growth soon.</p>\n<p><b>High Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Wall Street is an efficient market, discounting good news and bad news on listed companies. As a result, shares are run-up ahead of good news and sold-off ahead of bad news. Sometimes, Mr. Market—to use Benjamin Graham's terminology—is too optimistic, sending the shares of listed companies well above their fundamental or intrinsic value. Other times, Mr. Market is too pessimistic, sending shares of listed companies well below their intrinsic value.</p>\n<p>Tesla's shares are overvalued by many standards. TipRanks, for instance, estimates Tesla's 12-month-trailing return on equity to be a modest 12.41%, while estimates put Tesla's intrinsic value at $160.11, well below its current price level.</p>\n<p><b>Competition from Colonizers</b></p>\n<p>Once, Tesla had little competition, as the electric vehicle (EV) market it pioneered had little competition from traditional automakers. However, that's no longer the case, as General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, and Toyota are invading the electric market.</p>\n<p>These \"colonizers\" of the EV market have the manufacturing experience, expertise, and distribution networks to scale up EV production and cross the \"tipping point\" of bringing EVs to the masses. Meanwhile, the entry of new competitors into the EV market could unleash price competition that will erode Tesla's revenue growth and profit margins. That's something Wall Street is watching closely in quarterly financial statements.</p>\n<p><b>Bitcoin Exposure</b></p>\n<p>Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has an affinity for bitcoin. That's why he has been investing some of the company's cash in digital currency. As of the end of March, Tesla's $1.5 billion investment was worth $2.48 billion, based on the surge in bitcoin in the first quarter. However, that has its risks, too, given bitcoin's volatility.</p>\n<p>Adding to bitcoin's volatility are accounting rules that treat the digital currency as an indefinite-lived intangible asset. Thus, it is subject to impairment losses if its fair value decreases below the carrying value during the assessed reporting period. Companies cannot recover impairment losses for any subsequent increase in fair value until the asset's sale. Tesla reported bitcoin-related impairments of $23 million in Q2 as the price of digital currency dived.</p>\n<p><b>Rising Material Costs</b></p>\n<p>Together with traditional automobile makers, Tesla faces a severe material shortage due to supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is expected to slow down the pace of its feverish growth.</p>\n<p>\"While we're making cars at full speed, the global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,\" Musk told investors. \"For the rest of this year, our growth rates will be determined by the slowest part in our supply chain,\" adding that there are a wide range of chips that will serve as that brake on growth.</p>\n<h4>Mixed reviews from Wall Street</h4>\n<p>Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill said Tesla shares are already priced to perfection, which could explain the stock’s weakness on Tuesday.</p>\n<p>“Tesla's ‘priced to perfection’ valuation is hard for us to justify, even with more positive recent Results,” Gill wrote.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said the quarter likely didn’t change the narrative for bulls or bears, and Tesla is still not a value stock priced at an enterprise multiple of 70x.</p>\n<p>“Tesla is not only among the fastest growing auto companies in the world, it is also one of the most profitable,” Jonas wrote.</p>\n<p>Wells Fargo analyst Colin Langan said auto gross margins were impressive, but they may not last.</p>\n<p>“We see auto margins moderating in Q3/Q4 due to rising raw mat costs and mix dilution as the lower priced Model Y SR launches in China,” Langran wrote.</p>\n<p>John Murphy with B. of A. Securities struck a more cautious tone. Despite the beat, \"competition is fierce and heating up,\" he said. \"(Tesla's) operating environment is shifting from that of a vacuum to an increasingly crowded space.\"</p>\n<p>The quarterly beat was \"very much helped by positive pricing dynamics and good execution,\" and Murphy raised his price target on the stock to $800 from $750, which represents an upside around 26% from Tuesday's prices. That puts the movie-theater chain’s market capitalization at roughly $16 billion, more than 15 times what it was in 2018, a record-breaking year at the box office. Shares were up another 34%, to $42.92, in premarket trading Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Even if investors missed an inflection point, though, the math doesn’t add up. The reason might be that market cap isn’t the right measure. Maybe it’s enterprise value, which is essentially market cap and debt. AMC’s enterprise value is about $26 billion, compared with $6.2 billion or so at the end of 2018.</p>\n<p>AMC added debt during the pandemic as theaters in the country’s biggest cities were dark for months. And the numbers make it easy to understand why: The U.S. box office in 2020 generated about $2.1 billion in ticket sales, down 81% from the 2018 record of $11.9 billion.</p>\n<p>So, it seems investors have been vexed by movie theater economics. But it wouldn’t be the first time. The industry essentially went belly up at the turn of the millennium. Regal Cinemas, for instance, declared bankruptcy in 2001.</p>\n<p>Back then, the industry had plenty of capacity because of a new theater design—stadium seating that gave a better view of the screen. That shift meant movie theater chains had to renovate or risk losing all their patrons to movie theaters that offered the better view. In the end, too many seats and not enough patrons meant the return on the stadium-seating investments never materialized.</p>\n<p>The upshot was consolidation. With fewer operators, the number of screens stabilized. Between 2002 and 2007, Regal Cinemas became a cash-generating machine because the stock was mispriced. The stock returned 21% a year on average. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both returned less than 9% a year on average over the same period.</p>\n<p>In those days, Regal Cinema’s enterprise value about $5 billion, or about 50% of total U.S. box office sales. That’s far short of AMC today. Something new has to be different for AMC to be worth it.</p>\n<p>Maybe the movie theater business is going to go through another period of consolidation, which can usher in another golden age of returns. AMC’s Tuesday gains, in fact, were catalyzed by new capital raised so the company could go on the offensive, acquiring defunct chains. Monopolies, after all, can be good for stock returns.</p>\n<p>If AMC can increase market share and the U.S. box office sales can return to 2018 levels in a few years, total sales at might be $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 amounted to $5.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Then, with better gross profit margins derived from larger scale, AMC might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually, which puts the stock at about a 4% free cash flow yield. The S&P 500 trades for about a 3% free cash flow yield. The numbers can work—if they’re stretched.</p>\n<p>There are problems with this scenario, though. There are lots of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past. Arriving at $600 million in free cash flow is more about justifying current valuations than predicting what is likely.</p>\n<p>Also, with mergers and acquisitions, AMC market shares might rise, but there are still competitors. Regal Cinemas is still out there, owned by Cineworld Holdings (CINE. London). So is Cinemark (CNK). There’s not a true monopoly.</p>\n<p>AMC and its peers have to deal with streaming, too. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking. The pandemic has accelerated that. And if AMC gets too large and demanding for movie makers, the talent can always go to streaming faster, hurting box office sales.</p>\n<p>There is also the problem of the peer stocks. They aren’t trading like this is a brave new world for theaters. Cineworld stock is up 484% from its 52-week low, but shares are still off 72% from all-time highs. Cinemark shares are up 222% from their 52-week low. They are down 47% from their all-time high.</p>\n<p>AMC stock, again, is up almost 1,600% from its 52-week low and is down just 13% from its May all-time high.</p>\n<p>Wall Street just doesn’t see the potential either. Nine analysts cover the stock. The average analyst price target is about $5. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. But there were fewer shares back then. The old target enterprise value was roughly $7 billion. It’s tough to get from $7 billion to $26 billion predicting better margins.</p>\n<p>Analysts do have positive free cash flow modeled, though–$13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023. As a result, global fundamental equity L/S hedge funds lost almost two-thirds of their YTD gains in just the past week, bringing their total YTD return to just 0.97% in what is setting up as another dismal year for the 2 and 20 crowd.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c1d262955a001211ed92ecfceca5b3d\" tg-width=\"501\" tg-height=\"472\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>What is remarkable is just how sensitive to overall market beta the hedge fund space has become, and there is a reason for that: according to Goldman Prime,<b>overall book Gross leverage rose +1.7 pts to 247.1%, the highest on record,</b>while Net leverage fell -0.9 pts to 88.2% (not quite an all time high, but still 87th percentile).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8e8665b4387577b4f2b41e5791e348b3\" tg-width=\"1087\" tg-height=\"487\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Looking at the composition of hedge fund purchases,<b>the overall GS Prime book was modestly net bought again in the past week</b>(+0.15 SDs), driven by risk-on flows as long buys outpaced short sales. Specifically, single Names were net bought while Macro Products (Index and ETF combined) were net sold. North America and to a lesser extent Europe were net bought driven by long buys, while DM Asia and EM Asia were net sold driven by short sales. 8 of 11 global sectors were net bought led in $ terms by Consumer Disc, Health Care, Staples and Real Estate, while Info Tech, Materials, and Financials were net sold.</p><p>Meanwhile, continuing the trend first observed last weekwhen we noted that hedge funds shorted tech sharesfor 9 of the previous 10 days, Goldman notes that<b>Info Tech saw the largest net selling in nine months as managers reduced exposure for a third straight week.</b>And in a surprise reversal to months of bullishness on IT, GS Prime points out that hedge funds are currently Underweight Info Tech stocks by -1.4% vs. the MSCI World,<b>the lowest level since last November and in the 3rd percentile vs. the past five years.</b></p><p>Some more details from the Goldman reports:</p><ul><li>Info Tech, the worst performing sector this week,<b>was also by far the most net sold sector on the GS Prime book driven by short sales outpacing long buys 7 to 1.</b></li><li>Info Tech stocks were net sold for a third straight week and saw the largest week/week $ net selling since last August (-1.6 SDs). Net trading flow diverged on a subsector level – Semis & Semi Equip, Software, and Electronic Equip were the most net sold, while Comm Equip and IT Services were the most net bought.</li><li>Hedge funds are currently U/W Info Tech stocks by -1.4% vs. the MSCI World,<b>the lowest level since last November and in the 3rd percentile vs. the past five years.</b></li><li>From an industry group standpoint, hedge funds are still O/W Software & Svcs by +4.7% (28th percentile) and U/W Semis & Semi Equip and Tech Hardware by -1.6% (13th percentile) and -4.3% (18th percentile), respectively</li></ul><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9fd6a23b77549f58ef41bd23b5de74c0\" tg-width=\"656\" tg-height=\"385\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">And while hedge funds shorted tech, the Goldman US Consumer Discretionary sector saw the largest net buying in three months driven by E-Commerce stocks. As a result, the GS Prime book is now O/W US Consumer Discretionary by +3.3% vs. the S&P 500,<b>which is in the 9th percentile vs. the past year and in the 50th percentile vs. the past five years</b>.</p><ul><li>In $ terms, Consumer Discretionary was the most net bought US sector on the GS Prime book this week, driven by risk-on flows with long buys outpacing short sales 4 to 1.</li><li>The sector’s aggregate long/short ratio (MV) on the GS Prime book ended the week at 2.53, which is in the 2nd percentile vs. the past year and in the 77th percentile vs. the past five years. Shares have fallen nearly 30% from their record high set just ahead of its fourth-quarter report in late January, with more than a third of that slide in share price taking place since the company reported first quarter results in April.</p>\n<p>So whether the best performing stock of 2020 can get back on track will depend greatly on what investors hear Monday evening, when Tesla releases its second quarter results.</p>\n<p>Here are the top issues they'll be looking at:</p>\n<h3>How are things going in China?</h3>\n<p>Unlike other automakers, Tesla normally reports only global numbers, and doesn't break down sales by country or market. But if it wants to assure investors, it may need to give details on its sales in China, which is not only the largest market for all auto sales but also the major market with the greatest share of sales going to EVs.</p>\n<p>Tesla was hit by widespread reports of safety problems in China, including the recall of almost all cars made at its Shanghai factory and a protest by Tesla owners at the Shanghai auto show in April.</p>\n<p>\"The China growth stories is the top of the list for Tesla,\" said Dan Ives, tech analyst with Wedbush Securities and a Tesla bull. \"This is their key market, we believe 40% of their sales will come from there next year. I think that's the linchpin to the stock going up or down.\"</p>\n<p>Although Chinese sales of EVs from other automakers are reportedly growing, Tesla's China sales fell 9.2%, according to stats cited by Gordon Johnson of GLJ Research, an analyst who is one of Tesla's harshest critics.</p>\n<p>\"It seems clear Tesla has a China demand problem,\" he wrote in a recent note. \"Weak second quarter 2021 China domestic sales likely translate into weak second quarter earnings for Tesla.\"</p>\n<h3>How did it make its profits?</h3>\n<p>Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv expect Tesla to report adjusted income of more than $1 billion for the second straight quarter, and net income of about $650 million. Both would be records for the company, and would mark the eighth straight quarterly profit after years of losses.</p>\n<p>But Tesla critics point out that its net income has never exceeded the money it gets from selling regulatory tax credits to other automakers for whom EV sales are a very small percentage of their overall sales. Those other automakers use the credits they purchase from Tesla to meet environmental standards, thus avoiding large fines.</p>\n<p>Tesla got $518 million from those sales in the first quarter, but even Tesla admits it can't count on those sales to continue as other automakers start to sell more of their own EVs. The company's critics say it is proof that Tesla can't make money just from selling cars.</p>\n<p>If its net income finally does exceed those credits, as the estimates suggest, it will be a significant milestone for the company, Ives said.</p>\n<p>\"That would throw one of the core bear arguments against the stock out the window,\" he said.</p>\n<h3>What's going on with its bitcoin holdings?</h3>\n<p>In February, Tesla disclosed it used some of its cash on hand to purchase $1.5 billion in bitcoin. In April, it disclosed that it has sold some of those holdings and booked net income of $101 million from its crypto trading — adding to the argument that the company doesn't make money actually selling cars.</p>\n<p>The bitcoin transactions made some investors nervous, said Ives, especially since the cryptocurrency has lost more than a third of its value since then.</p>\n<h3>What's going on with supply chain issues?</h3>\n<p>The entire global auto industry is struggling with a computer chip shortage.</p>\n<p>With other automakers ramping up production of their own EVs, Tesla now has greater competition for the raw materials that make up large EVe batteries, such as lithium.</p>\n<p>In May, Musk tweeted that Tesla had to raise the price of its cars because of rising raw material costs. The outlook for raw material prices and the supply of parts such as chips and batteries will be a key to investors' expectations about Tesla sales the rest of this year.</p>\n<h3>What's going on with new plants in Texas and Germany?</h3>\n<p>Tesla has a track record of getting new plants up and running much faster than traditional automakers.</p>\n<p>It has a plant under construction near Austin, Texas, which will build the Model Y SUV and eventually the Cybertruck pickup, as well as another near Berlin to serve the European market, where it is losing ground on EV sales to Volkswagen (VLKAF).</p>\n<p>Having two plants under construction simultaneously is the most ambitious expansion ever for Tesla, and the outlook for when the plants will be up to speed will be a key to investor expectations going forward.</p>\n<p>Tesla said in April it expected both plants to have limited production later this year and \"volume production\" in 2022. It did not spell out what that means.</p>\n<h3>What's the latest on the Cybertruck?</h3>\n<p>With a number of established automakers such as Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) on the verge of selling their own electric pickups, it's important that Tesla get the Cybertruck, its first pickup, into consumers' hands soon. In January, Musk said he was expecting \"volume production\" in 2022.</p>\n<p>Then in March he tweeted \"Update probably in Q2.\" He said the focus now was getting the Texas plant finished, calling that job a \"beast.\" Investors are anxious to get that update.</p>\n<h3>What are plans to open Tesla's superchargers to other automakers' EVs.</h3>\n<p>This past week, Musk said in a tweet that \"we're making our Supercharger network open to other EVs later this year.\" As is often the case when he makes news via tweet, there were no details to help investors assess the business impact of such a move.</p>\n<p>It could be significant. \"By 2030, we conservatively estimate Tesla supercharging revenue of $2.9 billion, a figure which does not include any revenue from non-Tesla vehicles,\" wrote Morgan Stanley auto analyst Adam Jonas in a note following the tweet.</p>\n<p>Musk will almost certainly be asked about the plans to open the network to other companies' cars during the conference call.</p>\n<h3>What's the outlook for full self-driving cars?</h3>\n<p>This is one reason Tesla shares have so greatly outperformed traditional auto stocks: the belief of investors that it is closer to offering full self-driving cars, or FSD, than any other companies.</p>\n<p>Musk keeps promising advances for versions of FSD in his tweets. And Tesla CFO Zachary Kirkhorn spoke on the last earnings call about the potential for significant revenue from drivers who pay for FSD on a subscription basis.</p>\n<p>But so far FSD has been more promise than reality.
