Here's how to trade it after its Tuesday earnings report.</p>\n<p>Netflix&nbsp;of late has enjoyed a strong tailwind, but will that tailwind carry the stock higher when the streaming giant reports earnings on Tuesday after the close?</p>\n<p>While Alphabet&nbsp;is the best-performing FAANG component in 2021 and over the past 12 months, Netflix has had the best short-term momentum.</p>\n<p>Of the five-stock group, the Los Gatos, Calif., company's stock has the best one-month and three-month performances, up 7% and 18.7%, respectively.</p>\n<p>The next best performer -- Alphabet -- is up 0.8% and 11.8% during that stretch, respectively.</p>\n<p>In any regard, investors now want to know whether the earnings report will be the next catalyst to send Netflix stock higher.</p>\n<p>The company’s \"Squid Games\" show was introduced in September and has gotten off to&nbsp;a record start.</p>\n<p>On Monday, Netflix said the show translates to a&nbsp;valuation of roughly $900 million&nbsp;when accounting for various metrics.</p>\n<p><b>Trading Netflix Stock</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/99679a91e1588787ddab0942b5689a14\" tg-width=\"1023\" tg-height=\"735\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Daily chart of Netflix stock.</span></p>\n<p>The chart shows that Netflix gained momentum long before it introduced its latest hit show.</p>\n<p>In mid-August, Netflix stock ripped off a 20% rally, climbing in 15 out of 16 trading sessions. The lone down day accounted for a loss of just 1%.</p>\n<p>After a mild correction, investors bought the dip and the shares rallied to highs, hitting the 161.8% extension just shy of $650.</p>\n<p>From here the situation gets a bit trickier.</p>\n<p>While Netflix is doing a good job holding the 10-day moving average, more downside could be in play if the reaction is bearish. That will put the $615 breakout level and the 21-day moving average on the table.</p>\n<p>Below that puts the 10-week moving average and daily VWAP measure in play near $600, along with the prior all-time high near $593. This would be a decent buy-the-dip opportunity should it materialize.</p>\n<p>On the upside, keep an eye on the $647.50 level. Above $650 and we could see the start of a move up toward the $690 to $700 area.</p>\n<p>Beware of an open north of $647 that investors sell into. Elsewhere, economic data on consumer confidence is also due for release.\nThe Senate is expected to vote Monday on a procedural motion over the legislation passed by the House of Representatives last week. That bill included a plan to temporarily fund the government through early December, and came alongside a measure to raise the government debt ceiling through December 2022.\nThe latter point has been an area of contention for Senate Republicans, who are only narrowly outnumbered by Democratic lawmakers in both chambers and who have threatened to block the bill in its current form.\nSenate Republicans including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have suggested that Democratic lawmakers should use the budget reconciliation process to raise the debt ceiling without Republican support. McConnell has, however, supported a short-term government funding bill that excludes a debt ceiling suspension.\n\"If they [the Democrats] want to tax, borrow and spend historic sums of money without our input, they’ll have to raise the debt limit without our help. This is the reality,” McConnell said on the Senate floor last week.\nDemocratic lawmakers, for their part, have called for the move to raise the debt limit be bipartisan to prevent the government from defaulting on its obligations. The reminder served as a standard warning one week out from Congress's deadline to reach an agreement to at least temporarily continue funding the government.\nThough leaders of both political parties have agreed that a continuing resolution to avoid the shutdown at the end of the month is needed, the ongoing tension over raising the debt limit has served as a potential roadblock in this effort.\n\"We still expect Congress to avert a partial government shutdown at the start of October. But again, with all the liquidity out there, I think any sort of blip in the markets will be short-lived.\"\nHistorical equity performance during and immediately following a government shutdown has also tended to point to a muted market impact.\n\"In the 14 government shutdowns since 1980, the S&P 500 generated median returns of -0.1% on the dates of budget authority expiration, 0.1% during the shutdown periods, and 0.3% on the dates of resolution,\" David Kostin, Goldman Sachs chief equity strategist, wrote in a note published on Sept. 21.\n\"One notable exception was the most recent federal shutdown in December 2018, when the S&P 500 fell 2% on the spending authority expiration date,\" he added. \"However, this decline was likely driven primarily by investor concerns about Fed tightening.\"\nKostin also noted that the typical government shutdown since 1980 has only lasted three days before ultimately being resolved. More recent shutdowns have lasted several times longer, however, with the duration of the four most recent federal shutdowns averaging 18 days, Kostin said.\nConsumer confidence\nOn the economic data front, one of the most closely watched new pieces of data will be on consumer confidence.\nThe Conference Board is set to release its September consumer confidence index Tuesday morning. Economists expect the index to tick up only slightly compared to August, with consumers' views on the coronavirus and rising prices stabilizing near the lowest level since February.\nSpecifically, consensus economists are looking for the index to rise to 115.0 in September after dropping to 113.8 in August. During the last monthly report, consumers' assessments of current business and labor market conditions both eased, and expectations for the next six months out also deteriorated.\n\"Consumer confidence fell to a six-month low in August, due to concerns around the Delta variant and inflation,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note on Friday. \"We think these concerns largely remained in September.\"\nAt the time, Lynn Franco, senior director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, said it was still \"too soon to conclude\" whether decline in consumer confidence would \"result in consumers significantly curtailing their spending in the months ahead.\"\nThe latest spending data has also been equivocal. If anything, it has only been further confirmed in the last few quarters. I previously detailed the thesis here:Twilio: A Valid Investment Proposition.</p>\n<p>In short, Twilio is one of those growth companies of which one can be quite sure it will continue to grow at a steady clip for many years given its multi-billion potential and leadership position, enabling its customers to go through their digital transformation through its B2C engagement solutions across digital channels (SMS, e-mail, etc.). Such a prospect may offset some valuation concerns in the long run, as Twilio is positioned to aim for a &gt;$100B market cap.</p>\n<p><b>Q2 results</b></p>\n<p>Q2 was very much a repeat of Twilio’s performance in the last so many quarters. After last earnings, it seemed some investors were concerned about sequential growth deceleration. However, in my previous analysis, I pointed out that Twilio had guided flat in Q1 and then delivered a large beat. This is indeed what happened yet again, as Twilio delivered another large beat.</p>\n<p>The $70M beat resulted in another revenue acceleration quarter to ~$670M, delivering 67% growth. Net retention remained steady at 135%. The initial Q3 guidance, again, assumes another sequentially near-flat quarter. This would result in &gt;50% growth in Q3. If anything, it has only been further confirmed in the last few quarters. I previously detailed the thesis here:Twilio: A Valid Investment Proposition.\nIn short, Twilio is one of those growth companies of which one can be quite sure it will continue to grow at a steady clip for many years given its multi-billion potential and leadership position, enabling its customers to go through their digital transformation through its B2C engagement solutions across digital channels (SMS, e-mail, etc.). Such a prospect may offset some valuation concerns in the long run, as Twilio is positioned to aim for a >$100B market cap.\nQ2 results\nQ2 was very much a repeat of Twilio’s performance in the last so many quarters. After last earnings, it seemed some investors were concerned about sequential growth deceleration. However, in my previous analysis, I pointed out that Twilio had guided flat in Q1 and then delivered a large beat. This is indeed what happened yet again, as Twilio delivered another large beat.\nThe $70M beat resulted in another revenue acceleration quarter to ~$670M, delivering 67% growth. Net retention remained steady at 135%. The initial Q3 guidance, again, assumes another sequentially near-flat quarter. This would result in >50% growth in Q3. Also yesterday,<b>Walt Disney</b>(NYSE:DIS)announced its quarterly earnings report, and CEO Bob Chapek noted \"increased production at our studios.\" While that is a positive for theater operators, Disney also reported disappointing subscriber growth in itsstreaming services.</p>\n<p><b>Now what</b></p>\n<p>Lower streaming subscriptions could be a positive sign for the theater business. As vaccinations continue to roll out, and with the CDC now officially giving its approval to gather indoors with crowds and without masks, theater attendance may resume quickly.</p>\n<p>Vaccinations are going to drive people back to activities outside the home. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.</p>\n<p>There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021.
