In March, search engine giant Baidu netted $3.1 billion, while video platform Bilibili raised $3 billion that same month. Shanghai-based Trip.com, a travel booking platform, received $1.3 billion from investors in April.</p>\n<p>Four of the five firms made the list of top 10 IPOs worldwide in terms of funds raised for the first half of 2021.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2450e9000b6cc09a084ce1ea12996dbf\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"632\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The outsize presence of technology firms on the Hong Kong bourse is not surprising, as markets pivot to “new economy” firms—namely, innovative, tech-first companies, says Louis Lau, partner in the capital markets advisory group atKPMGChina.</p>\n<p>The trend in “homecoming listings”—or U.S.-listed Chinese companies that choose the HKEX for a secondary listing—that began in 2018 has also continued this year. The Hong Kong bourse is a natural choice for such listings, given domestic investors’ familiarity with Chinese companies’ brands and businesses, analysts say. Secondary listings in Hong Kong serve as a sort of backup option for U.S.-listed firms that are at risk of being booted from American exchanges should they violate U.S. audit review rules.</p>\n<p>Fourteen Chinese companies have opted for a secondary listing in Hong Kong since 2018. Baidu, Bilibili, Trip, and online car portal Autohome staged homecoming listings in the first six months of 2021 andraised a combined$8.1 billion—approximately 31% of the city’s IPO proceeds.</p>\n<p>“The ‘homecoming’ of U.S.-listed Chinese companies continues to lift the city’s capital markets…and [are] the hot trend of the Hong Kong IPO market. We expect this trend to continue,” says Lau.</p>\n<p>For the first half of this year, the HKEX ranked third worldwide in terms of funds raised, behind theNasdaqand New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), which raked in $46.4 billion and $28.3 billion, respectively. Shanghai-based Trip.com, a travel booking platform, received $1.3 billion from investors in April.</p>\n<p>Four of the five firms made the list of top 10 IPOs worldwide in terms of funds raised for the first half of 2021.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2450e9000b6cc09a084ce1ea12996dbf\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"632\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The outsize presence of technology firms on the Hong Kong bourse is not surprising, as markets pivot to “new economy” firms—namely, innovative, tech-first companies, says Louis Lau, partner in the capital markets advisory group atKPMGChina.</p>\n<p>The trend in “homecoming listings”—or U.S.-listed Chinese companies that choose the HKEX for a secondary listing—that began in 2018 has also continued this year. The Hong Kong bourse is a natural choice for such listings, given domestic investors’ familiarity with Chinese companies’ brands and businesses, analysts say. Secondary listings in Hong Kong serve as a sort of backup option for U.S.-listed firms that are at risk of being booted from American exchanges should they violate U.S. audit review rules.</p>\n<p>Fourteen Chinese companies have opted for a secondary listing in Hong Kong since 2018. Baidu, Bilibili, Trip, and online car portal Autohome staged homecoming listings in the first six months of 2021 andraised a combined$8.1 billion—approximately 31% of the city’s IPO proceeds.</p>\n<p>“The ‘homecoming’ of U.S.-listed Chinese companies continues to lift the city’s capital markets…and [are] the hot trend of the Hong Kong IPO market. We expect this trend to continue,” says Lau.</p>\n<p>For the first half of this year, the HKEX ranked third worldwide in terms of funds raised, behind theNasdaqand New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), which raked in $46.4 billion and $28.3 billion, respectively. Funds raised in the global IPO market soared to $210 billion in the first six months of 2021, an increase of 66% compared with the same period last year.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/029bb7383e64abec244db35d4ac948ac\" tg-width=\"704\" tg-height=\"612\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>HKEX in May announced it will raise its profit requirements by 60% for listing applicants starting in January 2022. It’s the first increase in almost 30 years for the bourse, which made the change to “enhance market quality and investor protection,”HKEX said in a statement.</p>\n<p>Even with the higher profit threshold, the Hong Kong exchange will remain competitive, Lau says. It was the world’s top-earning IPO in the first six months of 2021.\nJD Logistics, the technology-driven delivery arm of e-commerce empireJD.com, raised $3.6 billion in its May debut.\nThree secondary listings by Chinese firms also brought in large sums. In March, search engine giant Baidu netted $3.1 billion, while video platform Bilibili raised $3 billion that same month. Shanghai-based Trip.com, a travel booking platform, received $1.3 billion from investors in April.\nFour of the five firms made the list of top 10 IPOs worldwide in terms of funds raised for the first half of 2021.\n\nThe outsize presence of technology firms on the Hong Kong bourse is not surprising, as markets pivot to “new economy” firms—namely, innovative, tech-first companies, says Louis Lau, partner in the capital markets advisory group atKPMGChina.\nThe trend in “homecoming listings”—or U.S.-listed Chinese companies that choose the HKEX for a secondary listing—that began in 2018 has also continued this year. The Hong Kong bourse is a natural choice for such listings, given domestic investors’ familiarity with Chinese companies’ brands and businesses, analysts say. Instead,<b>NVIDIA</b>(NASDAQ:NVDA),<b>Skillz</b>(NYSE:SKLZ), and<b>Jushi Holdings</b>(OTC:JUSHF)can prove much better portfolio holdings in the long run.</p><p>1. NVIDIA</p><p>If you want to invest in leading-edge semiconductor technology powering artificial intelligence, cloud computing, autonomous driving, 5G, and several other next-generation trends, then NVIDIA may be exactly the right stock for you.</p><p>In the first quarter of fiscal 2022 (ending May 2), NVIDIA reported stellar performance, despite the ongoing global semiconductor shortage. Revenue jumped 84% year over year to $5.66 billion, and diluted earnings per share (EPS) soared 106% to $3.03. In the first quarter, gaming revenue was up 106% year over year to $2.76 billion, while data center revenue jumped 79% year over year to $2.05 billion.</p><p>Long known as a leader in the gaming space for its graphic processing units (GPUs), NVIDIA further strengthened that position by launching GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs in September. Since then, GeForce has triggered a massive GPU upgrade cycle in the gaming industry, and demand for NVIDIA-powered laptops and desktops from students, gamers, and creators has been outstripping supply.</p><p>In fact, the RTX 30 series has played a pivotal role in helping NVIDIArecapture some shareof the discrete GPU market from<b>Advanced Micro Devices</b>(NASDAQ:AMD). (\"Discrete GPU\" refers to a GPU which is separate from the central processing unit, or CPU.) Subsequently, the company ended 2020 with83% of the discrete GPUmarket share.</p><p>NVIDIA's data center segment is witnessing solid demand from massive data-center customers building infrastructure for providing AI capabilities to their clients. Management has also announced plans to launch their first data center central processing unit (CPU), theARM-based\"Grace\" chip, by 2023. With the capability to work 10 times faster than existing servers, Grace CPU can further strengthen NVIDIA's position in the global data center market.</p><p>With this backdrop, although NVIDIA trades at more than 40.8 times forward earnings, the premium valuation seems justified. Investors can earn handsome returns by picking up this market-leading semiconductor stock even at these elevated levels.</p><p>2. Skillz</p><p>Mobile esports platform Skillz has been on a wild ride in the past few months. The company IPOed via the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) route at an opening price of $17.89 in December, reached as high as $46.30 in February, and then tanked to an all-time low of $12.40 in April. The dramatic drop has been associated with several factors, including investors moving from growth to value stocks, some adverse short-seller reports, ill-timed capital raises, and equity dilution involving significant insider selling.</p><p>The sheer magnitude of Skillz's sell-off, however, seems unjustified. Skillz provides mobile game developers with a platform to organize competitions and then collects15% of the gross proceedspaid by players participating in these competitions. In the first quarter of fiscal 2021 (ending March 31), Skillz's monthly active users rose by 3.8% year over year to 2.7 million, and paying user count jumped by 81% to 467,000.</p><p>In an open letter to retail investors, Skillz founder and CEO Andrew Paradise highlighted the platform's high engagement level, noting that once users start paying, they stay with the company for the long run. While Skillz is currently focused only on paying users, Paradise's letter noted plans to explore other monetization methods, such as \"non-intrusive advertising\" and \"gamifying other industries and experiences,\" to add new revenue streams in the coming years.</p><p>In the first quarter, Skillz's revenues jumped 92% year over year to $84 million, ahead of its previous guidance of $80 million. The company also bumped up its year-over-year fiscal 2021 revenue growth estimate from 59% to 63%. However, this guidance does not include the potential gains from new game launches or entering new geographies.</p><p>The company has entered into a multi-year gaming agreement with the National Football League (NFL). While this deal will not add materially to Skillz's top line in fiscal 2021, it will attract more users to the platform. The company also plans to enter India by the end of fiscal 2021, a move expected to grow its addressable market by 65%. Against this backdrop, chances of Skillz reporting a steep revenue growth trajectory in coming quarters remains high.</p><p>Currently trading at 31 times trailing 12-month (TTM) sales, Skillz is still quite expensive, especially given that it's not profitable. However, the company is a solid bet on the growth potential of the mobile gaming market, which has expanded annually at a compounded average growth rate of 23% between 2015 and 2020. With a gross margin of 95%, a cash balance of $613 million, and zero debt, Skillz offers an attractive risk-reward proposition to retail investors.</p><p>3. Jushi Holdings</p><p>Shares of U.S. multi-state cannabis operator Jushi Holdings are up over 450% in the past 12 months -- and for a good reason. Although it's among the smallerU.S. cannabis companies, the company hasstrategically selected marketswith high growth potential and limited competition in which to operate, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois, California, Nevada, and Massachusetts.</p><p>Jushi currently operates 11 medical marijuana dispensaries in Pennsylvania and plans to open an additional seven in 2021. This footprint seems even more impressive considering the fact that Pennsylvania's limited licensing structure reduces competition.</p><p>There are 528,000 registered medical marijuana patients in Pennsylvania, and the market&nbsp;is expected to rake in $1.5 billion in revenues by 2023, meaning that Jushi stands to benefit dramatically in coming months. As Pennsylvania moves toward legalizing recreational marijuana, which is a major topic ahead of 2022 elections, Jushi's extensive presence can help establish its brands rapidly in this new market.</p><p>Jushi currently operates four dispensaries in Illinois, a state which legalized sales of recreational cannabis starting Jan. 1, 2020. With an estimated 2021 annual run rate of $1.3 billion, Illinois is well-positioned to be a major revenue driver for the company. The company also holds one of the only five vertically integrated licenses in Virginia -- allowing it to cultivate, process, and sell medical cannabis to customers in a market with limited competition. Virginia is expected to commence recreational cannabis sales in 2024, which will further boost Jushi's addressable market.</p><p>In first-quarter 2021 (ending March 31), Jushi's revenues rose 29% sequentially to $41.7 million. The company also has a strong balance sheet with $168 million cash and $82 million debt. There’s no way to fit you in.”</p>\n<p>After a moment, the prospector asked to say just four words to the present occupants.&nbsp;That seemed harmless to St. Peter, so the prospector yelled, “Oil discovered in hell!”&nbsp; Immediately, most of the oil prospectors stampeded out for the nether regions.&nbsp;Impressed, St. Peter invited the prospector to move in and get comfortable. The prospector paused, saying “No, I think I’ll go along with the rest of them.&nbsp; There might be some truth to that rumor after all.”</p>\n<p>Let that be a warning to CEOs and shareholders. Steering clear of rumors and self-delusion has been one of Warren Buffett’s key rules, ingrained into Berkshire Hathaway for years. We all need to hear such lessons repeatedly because reality’s temptations are always at war with our ideals.</p>\n<p>The serial frenzies in meme stocks like&nbsp;GameStop&nbsp;and cryptocurrencies like dogecoin&nbsp;make this a good time to contrast what investors should do from what many seem to do. Comparing Berkshire’s and crypto’s faithful is apt given their outsized followings: an estimated 30 million Americanshave traded cryptocurrencies and 30 million are expected to stream this year’s Berkshire virtual annual meeting on May 1.</p>\n<p>Buffett defines Berkshire as a corporation with a partnership attitude. The value of each investor’s stake will rise (or fall) in lock step. This contrasts with how many seem to view companies with meme stocks or most of the crypto space. There, the culture is casino-like, where a small few stand to reap unimaginable riches while the overwhelming majority lose their shirts.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Moreover, Berkshire’s culture emphasizes patience and permanence. The company ideally holds investments and businesses forever and encourages its shareholders to hold indefinitely, through thick and thin. In the world of meme stocks and cryptocurrency trading, a strong norm favors immediate payday profits to be taken off the board. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Relatedly, the Berkshire ideal accepts that it requires decades to build capital and that accumulating wealth entails skill and time — as well as a bit of luck. In contrast are those who strive to get rich quickly — and effortlessly. Today, some investment market players even seem to believe that everyone should be rich, as a matter of entitlement.</p>\n<p>The ideal Berkshire investor focuses on business, operating strategies, products or services and competitive advantages. For many in the meme-crypto world, what counts is hype and adrenaline, not whether there’s a business plan, let alone operations or customers. The Berkshire model is skeptical of fads, fashions and trends, while dogecoin and other cryptos thrive on these.</p>\n<p>This leads to the Berkshire canon’s cardinal principle: the circle of competence. It prescribes to invest only in what you can understand with a moderate amount of effort. This excludes at least some meme stocks and many currently faddish&nbsp;“blank-check” IPO-mergers. For most people, cryptocurrencies are outside of their circle of competence. Indeed, large numbers of investors nowadays appear to be way out of their circle of competence.</p>\n<p>For investments within one’s circle of competence, Berkshire adherents appreciate that prices fluctuate widely and no one can predict such volatility. “Mr. Market” is a moody manic, always willing to trade with you at the going price, sometimes elevated, sometimes depressed.</p>\n<p>Following from both the limits of personal competence and the whims of markets, the Berkshire playbook demands a wide margin between the price paid and the value received. In Berkshire’s value-investing lexicon, this is the “margin of safety,” and Buffett has long said that these are the&nbsp;three most important words in investing.</p>\n<p>Finally, besides avoiding rumor-mongering and self-delusion, the Berkshire playbook says to beware the delusions of others. Berkshire’s Vice Chairman, Charlie Munger, tells a story about fishing for muskies at Leech Lake in Minnesota. There’s no way to fit you in.”\nAfter a moment, the prospector asked to say just four words to the present occupants. That seemed harmless to St. Peter, so the prospector yelled, “Oil discovered in hell!”  Immediately, most of the oil prospectors stampeded out for the nether regions. Impressed, St. Peter invited the prospector to move in and get comfortable. The prospector paused, saying “No, I think I’ll go along with the rest of them.  There might be some truth to that rumor after all.”\nLet that be a warning to CEOs and shareholders. Steering clear of rumors and self-delusion has been one of Warren Buffett’s key rules, ingrained into Berkshire Hathaway for years. We all need to hear such lessons repeatedly because reality’s temptations are always at war with our ideals.\nThe serial frenzies in meme stocks like GameStop and cryptocurrencies like dogecoin make this a good time to contrast what investors should do from what many seem to do. Comparing Berkshire’s and crypto’s faithful is apt given their outsized followings: an estimated 30 million Americanshave traded cryptocurrencies and 30 million are expected to stream this year’s Berkshire virtual annual meeting on May 1.\nBuffett defines Berkshire as a corporation with a partnership attitude. The value of each investor’s stake will rise (or fall) in lock step. This contrasts with how many seem to view companies with meme stocks or most of the crypto space. There, the culture is casino-like, where a small few stand to reap unimaginable riches while the overwhelming majority lose their shirts. \nMoreover, Berkshire’s culture emphasizes patience and permanence. The company ideally holds investments and businesses forever and encourages its shareholders to hold indefinitely, through thick and thin. In the world of meme stocks and cryptocurrency trading, a strong norm favors immediate payday profits to be taken off the board.  \nRelatedly, the Berkshire ideal accepts that it requires decades to build capital and that accumulating wealth entails skill and time — as well as a bit of luck. In contrast are those who strive to get rich quickly — and effortlessly. Today, some investment market players even seem to believe that everyone should be rich, as a matter of entitlement.\nThe ideal Berkshire investor focuses on business, operating strategies, products or services and competitive advantages. For many in the meme-crypto world, what counts is hype and adrenaline, not whether there’s a business plan, let alone operations or customers. The Berkshire model is skeptical of fads, fashions and trends, while dogecoin and other cryptos thrive on these.\nThis leads to the Berkshire canon’s cardinal principle: the circle of competence. It prescribes to invest only in what you can understand with a moderate amount of effort. This excludes at least some meme stocks and many currently faddish “blank-check” IPO-mergers. For most people, cryptocurrencies are outside of their circle of competence. Indeed, large numbers of investors nowadays appear to be way out of their circle of competence.\nFor investments within one’s circle of competence, Berkshire adherents appreciate that prices fluctuate widely and no one can predict such volatility. “Mr. Market” is a moody manic, always willing to trade with you at the going price, sometimes elevated, sometimes depressed.\nFollowing from both the limits of personal competence and the whims of markets, the Berkshire playbook demands a wide margin between the price paid and the value received. In Berkshire’s value-investing lexicon, this is the “margin of safety,” and Buffett has long said that these are the three most important words in investing.\nFinally, besides avoiding rumor-mongering and self-delusion, the Berkshire playbook says to beware the delusions of others. Berkshire’s Vice Chairman, Charlie Munger, tells a story about fishing for muskies at Leech Lake in Minnesota.
