Cryptocurrency is the hot property today and any platform that offers convenience and security to buyers and sellers will be their first choice.</p>\n<p>PayPal has a network of 33 million retailers and allows customers to buy and sell digital currencies. Venmo is turning into a super app that is only going to grow in the coming years.</p>\n<p>PayPal will allow users to also make purchases on&nbsp;<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\"><b>Amazon</b></a> with their Venmo accounts beginning next year.</p>\n<p>This partnership with Amazon will help the company in the long term and will reflect on the bottom line. PayPal is consistently making moves to make financial transactions convenient, secure and quicker for the customers. The future is all about digital transactions and no one can deny the viability of the business.</p>\n<p>For this quarter, the company expects revenue between $6.85 billion and $6.95 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.12 per share.</p>\n<p>Analysts weren’t happy with the revenue guidance and the shares took a dip after the announcement but the company expects a rise in revenue of about 18% which is no small feat.</p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line on PYPL Stock</b></p>\n<p>E-commerce surged in the pandemic and PayPal benefitted from it but it is here to stay. PYPL stock may not double like it did last year but it will certainly move higher.</p>\n<p>This dip is a good chance to buy the stock and hold for the long term. It is a temporary dip and PYPL stock may break out in the coming weeks. It may not happen immediately but it will happen certainly.</p>\n<p>The fundamentals of the company look good and the Amazon partnership will benefit the business significantly. Since 1900, someone who sold in May actually could have retired earlier and with more money—but only if they hung around and waited to buy their stocks back during the usual summer panic.</p><p>Obvious note: If you want an easy life, ignore all trading advice from the Wall Street crowd. Set some basic rules—asset allocation, clearly established sell signals and so on—and stick to them.</p><p>On the other hand, there’s no point leaving money on the table if you’re willing to take a more active role.</p><p>The Wall Street phrase “sell in May” dates back at least to the 1930s. The theory was that the stock market’s returns over the summer months are usually so dismal that there’s really no point being in the market.</p><p>The updated version of this adage calls it “the Hallowe’en Effect,” and stretches the hiatus from May 1 to October 31: A full six months.</p><p>It sounds like superstitious nonsense, but there is some remarkable evidence for it.One exhaustive academic studylooked at all the available stock market data from around the world going as far back as 1693 (coincidentally, the time of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts—make of this what you will).</p><p>“In none of the 65 countries for which we have total returns and short term interest rates available—with the exception of Mauritius — can we reject a Sell in May effect,” report researchers Cherry Zhang and Ben Jacobsen. “Summer risk premiums are not only not significantly positive, they are in most cases not even marginally positive. In 45 countries the excess returns during summer have been negative, and in seven significantly so,” they write. In other words: Historically, all the stock market’s returns have come during the winter months. During the summer months, typically, the stock market’s returns haven’t been any better than the returns on keeping your money in the bank.</p><p>(Oh, unless you’re living in Mauritius.)</p><p>Smart money mavens have a number of pushbacks to all this. They’ll point out that this is somewhat random, and makes no logical sense. They’ll warn that likely gains don’t really compensate for the trading costs, the potential taxes (in a taxable account). And they’ll add that you risk missing out if the market rises.</p><p>Furthermore, they’ll say, once you and I get in the habit of getting into the market and then out of it again, most of us will simply mess it up. We’ll get back in too early, or too late, or not at all.</p><p>All reasonable points.</p><p>So the advice, “leave it alone,” is not wrong.</p><p>But…the mathematical criticism of “sell in May” is partly off-beam. That’s because critics assume we sell on May 1 and go away, and don’t come back until October 31.</p><p>I’ve looked through the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average&nbsp;DJIA,+0.70%&nbsp;going back to 1900 and something amazing leaps out.</p><p>Ignore where the market ends up on October 31. The real opportunity occurs at some point during the six month period.</p><p>There has<i>almost always</i>been a “summer selloff.” In 105 out of 120 years, or 88% of the time, the stock market has posted a decline at some stage in the six months after May 1.</p><p>So in almost 9 years out of 10, someone who sold their stock funds at the start of May was able to buy them back more cheaply during the next six months.</p><p>The average decline is 8%. That’s measured from May through the bottom of the slump.</p><p>In more than half of all years, the Dow Jones has fallen at least 5% during the summer lull, and in nearly one year out of three it has fallen by double digits.</p><p>These, of course, included such greatest hits as 2008 (a crash of 37%), 2002 (28%), 1987 (24%), 1907 (32%), and, of course, our old friend the catastrophe of 1929-32.&nbsp; Nearly all the terrible carnage of 1929-1932 took place during the summer months.</p><p>Weird, but true.</p><p>An average selloff of 8% is not small potatoes. Its revenue fell 1% year over year to $19.7 billion, but still beat estimates by $1.75 billion.</p>\n<p>Its&nbsp;non-GAAP&nbsp;net income declined 6% to $5.7 billion. Its non-GAAP earnings per share, buoyed by buybacks, dipped 1% to $1.39 and cleared expectations by $0.25. Those numbers exclude its NAND business, which will be sold to&nbsp;<b>SK Hynix</b>, and other one-time items.</p>\n<p>Intel expects its revenue and non-GAAP earnings to decline 10% and 15% year over year, respectively, in the second quarter. Analysts had expected its revenue and earnings to fall 9% and 19%, respectively.</p>\n<p>For the full year, Intel expects its GAAP revenue to dip 1% to $77 billion, and for its non-GAAP revenue to drop 7% to $72.5 billion, which misses the consensus forecast of $72.8 billion. It expects its non-GAAP EPS to decline 13%, compared to gloomier forecasts for a 19% decline.</p>\n<p>Intel's first-quarter growth cleared Wall Street's low bar, but its mixed guidance indicated its troubles would persist throughout the year. Intel's stock might look cheap at 13 times forward earnings with a decent forward yield of 2.4%, but it's still not worth buying for five simple reasons.</p>\n<p><b>1. PC sales will decelerate after the pandemic ends</b></p>\n<p>Intel's Client Computing Group (CCG) revenue rose 8% year over year to $10.6 billion during the quarter as it sold more CPUs for PCs. Its total PC unit volumes increased 38% year over year, with a 54% jump in notebook volumes offsetting a 4% decline in desktop volumes.</p>\n<p>However, PC sales mainly rose because the pandemic caused more people to buy new systems for remote work, online education, and gaming. That tailwind&nbsp;should fade&nbsp;after the pandemic ends.</p>\n<p><b>2. It could lose more market share to AMD</b></p>\n<p>Intel's ongoingchip shortage, which started in 2018 and hasn't been resolved yet, caused many PC makers to buy more chips from its fabless rival&nbsp;<b>AMD</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:AMD), which outsources its chip production to&nbsp;<b>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:TSM)&nbsp;instead of manufacturing its chips internally.</p>\n<p>As a result, Intel ceded the desktop and notebook CPU markets to AMD over the past three years.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8bab2b21309a9664da8b9d5d003dd857\" tg-width=\"1151\" tg-height=\"429\"><span>DATA SOURCE: PASSMARK SOFTWARE.</span></p>\n<p>Those declines could continue for the foreseeable future as the pandemic-related tailwinds dissipate and AMD moves further ahead in the \"process race\" to create smaller and more powerful chips with TSMC.</p>\n<p><b>3. Existential threats in the data center market</b></p>\n<p>Cloud capex soared across the world over the past year as data centers upgraded their hardware to cope with more online activities throughout the pandemic.</p>\n<p>For example, the three largest hyper-cloud companies --<b>Amazon</b>,<b>Microsoft</b>, and&nbsp;<b>Alphabet</b>'s Google -- collectively boosted their capex 32% in 2020. That increased spending should be good news for Intel, which holds a near-monopoly in data center CPUs.</p>\n<p>Yet Intel's data center group (DCG) revenue declined 20% year over year to $5.6 billion during the first quarter. It blamed that contraction on a \"challenging\" comparison to its 43% growth a year ago, which benefited from upgrades across the&nbsp;cloud, enterprise, government, and communication sectors.</p>\n<p>But those challenging comparisons could persist throughout 2021 as cloud and data center customers prioritize purchases of other chips, such as&nbsp;<b>NVIDIA</b>'s&nbsp;(NASDAQ:NVDA)&nbsp;high-end GPUs for crunching AI tasks, over Intel's flagship Xeon CPUs. NVIDIA's recent launch of its own&nbsp;data center CPU&nbsp;and its planned&nbsp;takeover of Arm&nbsp;could exacerbate that pressure.</p>\n<p>4. Unclear plans for its own foundry</p>\n<p>To resolve its ongoing production issues, Intel will outsource the production of some of its chips to TSMC. But it also plans to accept third-party chip orders at its new Intel Foundry Services division.</p>\n<p>This strategy contradicts itself. Intel still needs TSMC to produce some of its new chips because of&nbsp;the limitations of its existing foundries, yet it's building new plants to manufacture chips for other fabless chipmakers.</p>\n<p>In other words, Intel would still be temporarily dependent on TSMC, which remains ahead in the process race, while trying to compete against TSMC and<b>Samsung</b>for orders of less advanced chips. The foundry services business will also likely generate lower-margin revenue than its CCG and DCG businesses.</p>\n<p><b>5. Gross margin pressure and reduced buybacks</b></p>\n<p>Lastly, Intel's adjusted gross margin -- which dropped 6.1 percentage points year over year to 58.4% during the first quarter -- could remain under pressure as its PC sales decelerate, its data center sales decline, and it expands its lower-margin foundry services business.</p>\n<p>Intel also plans to reduce its buybacks to conserve more cash for its expansion efforts. That's a necessary measure, but it will throttle its EPS growth as its gross and operating margins contract.</p>\n<p><b>The bottom line</b></p>\n<p>Intel isn't doomed yet, but it's falling behind better-run chipmakers like AMD, NVIDIA, and TSMC. Its revenue fell 1% year over year to $19.7 billion, but still beat estimates by $1.75 billion.\nIts non-GAAP net income declined 6% to $5.7 billion. Its non-GAAP earnings per share, buoyed by buybacks, dipped 1% to $1.39 and cleared expectations by $0.25. Those numbers exclude its NAND business, which will be sold to SK Hynix, and other one-time items.\nIntel expects its revenue and non-GAAP earnings to decline 10% and 15% year over year, respectively, in the second quarter. Analysts had expected its revenue and earnings to fall 9% and 19%, respectively.\nFor the full year, Intel expects its GAAP revenue to dip 1% to $77 billion, and for its non-GAAP revenue to drop 7% to $72.5 billion, which misses the consensus forecast of $72.8 billion. It expects its non-GAAP EPS to decline 13%, compared to gloomier forecasts for a 19% decline.\nIntel's first-quarter growth cleared Wall Street's low bar, but its mixed guidance indicated its troubles would persist throughout the year. Intel's stock might look cheap at 13 times forward earnings with a decent forward yield of 2.4%, but it's still not worth buying for five simple reasons.\n1. PC sales will decelerate after the pandemic ends\nIntel's Client Computing Group (CCG) revenue rose 8% year over year to $10.6 billion during the quarter as it sold more CPUs for PCs. Its total PC unit volumes increased 38% year over year, with a 54% jump in notebook volumes offsetting a 4% decline in desktop volumes.\nHowever, PC sales mainly rose because the pandemic caused more people to buy new systems for remote work, online education, and gaming. That tailwind should fade after the pandemic ends.\n2. It could lose more market share to AMD\nIntel's ongoingchip shortage, which started in 2018 and hasn't been resolved yet, caused many PC makers to buy more chips from its fabless rival AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), which outsources its chip production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) instead of manufacturing its chips internally.\nAs a result, Intel ceded the desktop and notebook CPU markets to AMD over the past three years.\nDATA SOURCE: PASSMARK SOFTWARE.\nThose declines could continue for the foreseeable future as the pandemic-related tailwinds dissipate and AMD moves further ahead in the \"process race\" to create smaller and more powerful chips with TSMC.\n3. Existential threats in the data center market\nCloud capex soared across the world over the past year as data centers upgraded their hardware to cope with more online activities throughout the pandemic.\nFor example, the three largest hyper-cloud companies --Amazon,Microsoft, and Alphabet's Google -- collectively boosted their capex 32% in 2020. That increased spending should be good news for Intel, which holds a near-monopoly in data center CPUs.\nYet Intel's data center group (DCG) revenue declined 20% year over year to $5.6 billion during the first quarter. It blamed that contraction on a \"challenging\" comparison to its 43% growth a year ago, which benefited from upgrades across the cloud, enterprise, government, and communication sectors.\nBut those challenging comparisons could persist throughout 2021 as cloud and data center customers prioritize purchases of other chips, such as NVIDIA's (NASDAQ:NVDA) high-end GPUs for crunching AI tasks, over Intel's flagship Xeon CPUs. NVIDIA's recent launch of its own data center CPU and its planned takeover of Arm could exacerbate that pressure.\n4. Unclear plans for its own foundry\nTo resolve its ongoing production issues, Intel will outsource the production of some of its chips to TSMC. But it also plans to accept third-party chip orders at its new Intel Foundry Services division.\nThis strategy contradicts itself. Intel still needs TSMC to produce some of its new chips because of the limitations of its existing foundries, yet it's building new plants to manufacture chips for other fabless chipmakers.\nIn other words, Intel would still be temporarily dependent on TSMC, which remains ahead in the process race, while trying to compete against TSMC andSamsungfor orders of less advanced chips. The foundry services business will also likely generate lower-margin revenue than its CCG and DCG businesses.\n5. Gross margin pressure and reduced buybacks\nLastly, Intel's adjusted gross margin -- which dropped 6.1 percentage points year over year to 58.4% during the first quarter -- could remain under pressure as its PC sales decelerate, its data center sales decline, and it expands its lower-margin foundry services business.\nIntel also plans to reduce its buybacks to conserve more cash for its expansion efforts. That's a necessary measure, but it will throttle its EPS growth as its gross and operating margins contract.\nThe bottom line\nIntel isn't doomed yet, but it's falling behind better-run chipmakers like AMD, NVIDIA, and TSMC. Stock prices in recent years have risen faster than company profit, though corporate earnings remain the primary driver of stocks over the long term.</p>\n<p>Analysts come up with EPS estimates for companies ahead of quarterly earnings announcements based on their projected future growth. It is unclear to what extent companies rely on earnings-management practices to meet or beat analyst estimates.</p>\n<p>“Many investors suspect EPS manipulation is more common than the cases suggest,” said Amy Borrus, executive director of the Council of Institutional Investors, which represents pension funds and other large money managers.</p>\n<p>EPS manipulations usually aren’t detected by auditors conducting high-level reviews of companies’ quarterly financials. Auditors generally test a company’s internal controls and question executives about why they made large or unusual journal entries during a particular period, said Denis Usher, partner in charge of audit and consulting services for U.S.-listed companies at professional-services firm Mazars U.S.A. LLP. A challenge in detecting manipulations is that the accounting adjustments are usually small and don’t exceed a certain materiality threshold that auditors use for determining the aspects of quarterly adjustments to examine, he said.</p>\n<p>The SEC’s so-called EPS Initiative in August charged Healthcare Services Group Inc., which provides housekeeping and other services to healthcare facilities. The agency said the Bensalem, Pa.-based company failed to accrue for and disclose material loss contingencies—or a potential future loss—related to the settlement of private litigation in a timely fashion, as required by U.S. generally accepted accounting principles.</p>\n<p>There are about 5,500 companies publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq combined, according to the exchanges. SEC officials use risk-based data analytics to find companies that may have engaged in manipulations, and sometimes rounding issues can lead to an investigation.</p>\n<p>The initiative’s database was built on the basis of academic research dating back to 2009 that examined the unusually high absence of the numeral “4” in companies’ quarterly financial numbers, posing questions whether firms were improperly rounding up their earnings.</p>\n<p>Companies continue to use the numeral “4” in their unrounded quarterly EPS in less than 10% of cases, highlighting the potential for earnings manipulation through strategic rounding, said Nadya Malenko, an associate finance professor at University of Michigan. She conducted the research with former SEC commissioner Joseph Grundfest and Yao Shen, an assistant finance professor at Baruch College.</p>\n<p>The researchers assumed that every number should appear in the tenths place of unrounded EPS 10% of the time. Some companies could have an unusually low usage of “4” by statistical chance, but there is a strong correlation between this low usage and firms’ future restatements in their overall financials, Ms. Malenko said.</p>\n<p>“We have a…metric that appears to be a remarkably powerful predictor of problematic accounting behavior,” said Mr. Grundfest, now a professor of law and business at Stanford University.</p>\n<p>The SEC seeks to detect other earnings-management practices that are in violation of federal securities laws, including not recording loss contingencies in the appropriate quarters and making unsupported adjustments, such as those made to stock-based compensation accounts.</p>\n<p>Before the Healthcare Services Group settlement, the SEC in September 2020 said it had brought similar charges of EPS inflation for two other companies, modular carpet maker Interface Inc. and financial-services firm Fulton Financial Corp.</p>\n<p>Fulton Financial agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle the charges, while Interface settled for $5 million and Healthcare Services for $6 million. The median fine that public companies paid in cases involving financial reporting for the year ended September 2020 was $1.5 million, according to consulting firm Cornerstone Research.</p>\n<p>Interface and Fulton Financial declined to comment. Healthcare Services didn’t respond to a request for comment. The companies and the individuals didn’t admit or deny the charges in settling with the SEC.</p>\n<p>The U.S. securities regulator, currently, is investigating multiple companies over potential manipulations of earnings per share as part of the ongoing initiative, which may result in charges, a person familiar with the matter said.</p>\n<p>Unlike initiatives such as those focused on share-class selection disclosure—in which investment advisers provide conflicts of interest related to their practices—and short selling, the EPS initiative involves investigating financial fraud, which is particularly complex. The probes require witnesses and auditors to testify and the SEC to conduct a detailed analysis of GAAP.
