Although it may be hard to anticipate with much precision when the stock will perform best, there seems to be somewhat of a pattern.</p>\n<p>The graph below shows that steeper monthly losses in Apple shares tend to be followed by periods of strong stock performance. The market’s preference for small-cap value stocks over mega-cap growth ones during a year of economic recovery will eventually fizzle. At that point, chatter about&nbsp;Apple’s iPhone 13 will begin to surface. Historically, the best strategy has been&nbsp;to buy Apple when it is well off its peak. Recently, I came across yet another piece of evidence to support this idea.</p>\n<p>Over the past five years, Apple stock has produced monthly returns that have swung from a low of -18% in November 2018 to a high of 21% in August 2020. Although it may be hard to anticipate with much precision when the stock will perform best, there seems to be somewhat of a pattern.</p>\n<p>The graph below shows that steeper monthly losses in Apple shares tend to be followed by periods of strong stock performance. According to the Atlanta Federal Reserve's GDPNow tracker, the U.S. is on track for a 10% gain to start 2021.\n\"The labor market continues to post a sluggish recovery across the board,\" said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. \"We're seeing large-sized companies increasingly feeling the effects of COVID-19, while job growth in the goods producing sector pauses.\"\nAll of the net job growth came from the services side.\nTrade, transportation and utilities led sectors last month with the addition of 48,000 positions. Education and health services increased 35,000, while the battered hospitality industry, which took the worst of the pandemic-related hit, added just 26,000 jobs. Investors must be feeling uneasy about holding shares during this uncomfortable pullback.</p>\n<p>But I believe that shareholders also have reasons to be optimistic.</p>\n<p><b>History says: buy Apple</b></p>\n<p>Of course, a successful investment in Apple depends primarily on the company performing well and delivering above-consensus financial results going forward. In that regard, Apple’s business seems to be in very good shape, at least judging by&nbsp;the company’s most recent earnings report.</p>\n<p>So, I turn away from business fundamentals for now and focus on price action. Historically, the best strategy has been&nbsp;to buy Apple when it is well off its peak. Recently, I came across yet another piece of evidence to support this idea.</p>\n<p>Over the past five years, Apple stock has produced monthly returns that have swung from a low of -18% in November 2018 to a high of 21% in August 2020. Although it may be hard to anticipate with much precision when the stock will perform best, there seems to be somewhat of a pattern.</p>\n<p>The graph below shows that steeper monthly losses in Apple shares tend to be followed by periods of strong stock performance. Notice the dotted arrows:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/45802af85db02f208dc6687c52dd4a63\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"284\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Stock Rover</span></p>\n<p>Below are some numbers to help illustrate the point.</p>\n<p>Since 2016, Apple has produced an average three-month return of 3.5%, with worst decline of -11% in the fourth quarter of 2018. But an investor who waited to buy shares only after two months of material losses (defined here as -3%) in the previous three periods earned an average three-month return that was nearly twice as high, at 6.7%.</p>\n<p>March is shaping up to be a bad month for Apple, after January saw shares tank and February failed to impress. Judging only by the pattern described above, this could be a good time to jump in.</p>\n<p><b>Calendar pattern says: buy Apple</b></p>\n<p>The second reason to buy Apple now has to do with annual patterns in stock returns. The graph below tells a compelling story.</p>\n<p>Notice that the average monthly gains in Apple shares over the past five years have been best in the summer months of July and August. There isn’t much use in declaring a stock well-loved if only one analyst rates it Buy. The largest tech giants are in there as well as little-known software providers, shoe companies and drywall distributors. The companies are connected by analysts’ love for their stocks.</p>\n<p>There are 490 ratings on the two dozen; 469 of the ratings are Buy—about 96%. Cheniere, Ally, GoDaddy, Builders FirstSource, OneMain, Science Applications, New Residential and Sunnova are perfect. Every analyst covering those stocks rates shares Buy. The lowest Buy-rating ratio is Microsoft, with 93%.</p>\n<p>Still, that’s pretty good. The&nbsp;average&nbsp;Buy-rating ratio for stocks in the&nbsp;Dow Jones Industrial Average&nbsp;is 60%.</p>\n<p>The price-to-earnings ratio for the group falls around 25 times estimated earnings for the coming 12 months. That’s a little higher than the comparable PE ratio of the&nbsp;S &amp; P 500.But that hasn’t hindered the 24 stocks. Shares are up about 55% on average over the past year. What’s more, only three of the 24 are down over that period.</p>\n<p>The average expected gain, based on&nbsp;analyst target prices, from current levels is about 27%. Typically, analyst target prices represent where analysts expect a stock to trade over the coming 12 months. The Sunnova average analyst target price is about $58 a share, almost 60% higher than recent levels. The Conoco target, on the other hand, is right where the stock is trading, but oil prices are moving up, which can help any oil producer stock.</p>\n<p>There is no guarantee that analysts are right. But there are no guarantees in the stock market. What the high Buy-rating ratio does represent, however, is dozens of different analysts from many brokers have all arrived at the same conclusion. They are the ones, presumably, that analysts have the most confidence in and will be able to weather whatever 2021 throws at them.\nA good definition of best-loved is stocks that are nearly universally rated Buy by the analysts covering them.Barron’s looked at the Russell 3000 Index to find a couple dozen that fit the bill. To be included on our list, the stocks had to meet three benchmarks. For starters, at least 10 analysts have to cover the stock. There isn’t much use in declaring a stock well-loved if only one analyst rates it Buy. The companies also have to have no Sell ratings and market capitalizations greater than a few billion dollars.\nWe also excluded biotech stocks. There are well-loved biotech stocks, but buying one or two can be a dangerous strategy for many investors. Biotech stocks can jump—up or down, depending on the outcome of medical data. Cheniere, Ally, GoDaddy, Builders FirstSource, OneMain, Science Applications, New Residential and Sunnova are perfect. Every analyst covering those stocks rates shares Buy. The lowest Buy-rating ratio is Microsoft, with 93%.\nStill, that’s pretty good. The average Buy-rating ratio for stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average is 60%.\nThe price-to-earnings ratio for the group falls around 25 times estimated earnings for the coming 12 months. That’s a little higher than the comparable PE ratio of the S & P 500.But that hasn’t hindered the 24 stocks. Shares are up about 55% on average over the past year. What’s more, only three of the 24 are down over that period.\nThe average expected gain, based on analyst target prices, from current levels is about 27%. Typically, analyst target prices represent where analysts expect a stock to trade over the coming 12 months. The Sunnova average analyst target price is about $58 a share, almost 60% higher than recent levels. The Conoco target, on the other hand, is right where the stock is trading, but oil prices are moving up, which can help any oil producer stock.\nThere is no guarantee that analysts are right. And thanks to a lack of entertainment options outside the home in 2020, gaming sales worldwide surged 20% to a staggering&nbsp;$180 billion.</p>\n<p>In fact, gaming is so popular and lucrative that professional esports now has an audience of about 500 million people worldwide — with a 70% increase in the number of viewers in the U.S. last year because of the pandemic and the lack of traditional spectator sports options. And as with so many other tech trends, these recent converts are likely to stick and continue powering the esports business. Here’s one way to put it in context: esports are expected to have almost&nbsp;800 million&nbsp;viewers by 2024 – nearly as many as about 825 million or so fans of professional basketball worldwide today.</p>\n<p>Some of the biggest publicly traded videogame stocks are already old news. Over the last 10 years, gaming powerhouse Activision Blizzard&nbsp;has surged about 800% compared with about 200% for the S&amp;P 500 index&nbsp;in the same period, growing to almost $80 billion in market value. And of course there has been the frenzy over GameStock&nbsp;that led toa congressional hearing.</p>\n<p>But there are a host of up-and-coming companies looking to level up amid continued growth for the industry. If you’re looking to play the gaming and esports craze, here are some options worth a look:</p>\n<p><b>Nintendo</b></p>\n<p>Nintendo&nbsp;is an icon of the videogame industry. But just five years ago there was talk of “Nintendo’s Sad Struggle for Survival” amid waning popularity and weakening finances.</p>\n<p>The house of Mario has come back big time, thanks to its innovative Switch console that successfully bridged console and mobile gaming markets. Nintendo’s eShop is now bursting with “casual” games like the smash hit “Among Us,” which was originally built for mobile phones and boasted&nbsp;half a billion players&nbsp;in November. While there are big margins on $70 games or high-end hardware, Nintendo has built both its user base and its software offerings around low-cost diversions that collectively add up to serious revenue.</p>\n<p>At the same time, a strange convergence of circumstances have created big tailwinds for Nintendo’s high-end titles. Since its prior console — the Wii U — was a bit of a flop, Nintendo was able to reissue many native games with big price tags during the Switch’s early years. Now the company has planned releases in both its Zelda and Metroid franchises along with a potential upgrade to the Switch itself to drive high-margin hardware sales.</p>\n<p>Thanks to these facts and a big pandemic boost, Nintendo stock has doubled from its early 2019 levels and is now trading at its highest levels since 2007. And if the&nbsp;2021 release schedule&nbsp;lives up to the hype, we could see new all-time highs as this Japanese gaming powerhouse continues its return to dominance in the industry.</p>\n<p><b>Corsair</b></p>\n<p>If Nintendo has cashed in by connecting with more casual gamers, then Corsair Gaming&nbsp;shows how to cater to very serious PC gamers. This roughly $4 billion company is a top supplier of gaming-related parts from CPUs to peripherals like headsets and keyboards to specialty components for streaming gameplay on the internet. The streaming business line is particularly interesting, both via competitive esports play as well as commercial gamers looking to win viewers on platforms like Twitch and YouTube.</p>\n<p>The company completed its initial public offering in September and is soundly profitable. It’s also growing impressively, with its&nbsp;fourth-quarter earnings report&nbsp;in February showing a staggering 70% revenue growth and 118% profit growth year-over-year. Management has said this is thanks to expansion in all categories, too, and not just one item that’s hot at the moment.</p>\n<p>We’ve seen the power of high-end hardware stocks before with companies like the Nvidia,which is up fourfold from the end of 2018 thanks in part to its best-in-class graphics cards and now worth $370 billion. But what makes Corsair so great is that it’s not a competitor to Nvidia; in fact, when folks look to build a new gaming rig to incorporate components like the Nvidia GeForce 4k graphics card that was recently released, they are likely to upgrade everything else, too.</p>\n<p>That could allow Corsair to piggyback this trend in the short term and continue to build on its track record of success.</p>\n<p><b>Sea</b></p>\n<p>Singapore-based Sea&nbsp;isn’t well known in the West, but that may change quickly given its 2020 stock performance. Over the last 12 months, the stock has surged roughly 420% thanks to amazing growth and big tailwinds behind its unique technology business.</p>\n<p>That business involves a dominant gaming catalog offered under Sea’s&nbsp;Garena&nbsp;brand, led by multiplayer online battle arena&nbsp;(MOBA)&nbsp;games like League of Legends. Not only are the games themselves popular, but related MOBA esports broadcasts are big business, too. Consider that the 2020 League of Legends championship tallied&nbsp;139 million total hours&nbsp;of viewership with peak viewership of 3.8 million people watching at once.</p>\n<p>While League of Legends is admittedly one of the more mature franchises in Sea’s arsenal, the company certainly isn’t a one-trick pony. Its mobile-friendly MOBA title Free Fire was the most-downloaded game in the Google Play store in 2019 and just hit&nbsp;80 million&nbsp;daily users at the end of last year.</p>\n<p>And it doesn’t stop with just these games. This unique tech stock has divisions that focus on live streaming and social features for gamers, such as user chat and online forums, and a mobile-centric e-commerce marketplace to help with seller services like shipping and logistics.</p>\n<p>That adds up to a company that is uniquely positioned to capitalize on many parts of the gaming ecosystem, making Sea a very attractive option for those looking to tap into the full potential of this lucrative industry.</p>\n<p><b>Immersion</b></p>\n<p>The smallest and most aggressive play on this list is Immersion,a $350 million stock that is involved with “haptics.” This is the fancy technical term for motion and touch controls that use real-world feedback to allow users to interact with a computer or game console.</p>\n<p>The stock has surged about 50% in the last year in part because of a lucrative deal with Sony&nbsp;to produce components for its DualSense controllers that ship with the PlayStation 5. But the company’s long-term potential is bigger than one console, as the Nintendo witch and Xbox from Microsoft&nbsp;also use motion controls. Furthermore, there’s tremendous potential in the nascent VR market, too.</p>\n<p>There’s risk here, of course, since haptics technology has become standard fare for gamers only fairly recently and tons of companies are researching new solutions and forging relationships with the bigger names in the space.</p>\n<p>Immersion is certainly not alone in this gold rush, but its track record is impressive. Thanks in part to its relationship with Sony, the stock swung from a modest loss to significant profits in 2020 — and based on FY2021 forecasts, earnings per share are set to double going forward as revenue jumps 20%. That could give investors a degree of confidence in the long-term potential of this stock.</p>\n<p><b>Videogame ETFs</b></p>\n<p>If you are interested in simply playing the broader trend of gaming and esports without jumping into individual hardware or software names, the best way to do that is via an exchange-traded fund. Three ETFs offer investors a tactical but diversified investment on this industry.</p>\n<p>The VanEck Vectors videogaming and eSports ETF&nbsp;is a well-established fund with more than $900 million in assets. For just 0.55% in annual expenses, or $55 a year on every $10,000 invested, you get a global play on this megatrend.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, if you’re looking for diversification, the list of components is a bit lacking, with only 25 stocks right now. However, you’ll get the big names in the space including Nintendo and Sea along with Chinese giant Tencent Holdings.</p>\n<p>An alternative is the Global X videogames &amp; Esports ETF,which also has about $900 million in assets. It charges a slightly lower expense ratio of 0.50% annually and has just over 40 holdings at present. The makeup is similar to the VanEck ETF, but the longer list means U.S. stocks feature less prominently and only make up about 29% of the portfolio.</p>\n<p>Smallest in terms of assets is the Wedbush ETFMG videogame Tech ETF.This fund only has a bit more than $100 million in assets under management and charges the highest fees at 0.75% in expenses. However, with 91 holdings it has the deepest bench of the three — with many Asia components that are difficult for U.S. individual investors to buy as individual stocks.</p>\n<p>The strategies differ slightly, but one thing has been true for all of these funds lately: Big profits for investors. Recently, I came across yet another piece of evidence to support this idea.</p>\n<p>Over the past five years, Apple stock has produced monthly returns that have swung from a low of -18% in November 2018 to a high of 21% in August 2020. Although it may be hard to anticipate with much precision when the stock will perform best, there seems to be somewhat of a pattern.</p>\n<p>The graph below shows that steeper monthly losses in Apple shares tend to be followed by periods of strong stock performance. Notice the dotted arrows:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/45802af85db02f208dc6687c52dd4a63\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"284\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Stock Rover</span></p>\n<p>Below are some numbers to help illustrate the point.</p>\n<p>Since 2016, Apple has produced an average three-month return of 3.5%, with worst decline of -11% in the fourth quarter of 2018. But an investor who waited to buy shares only after two months of material losses (defined here as -3%) in the previous three periods earned an average three-month return that was nearly twice as high, at 6.7%.</p>\n<p>March is shaping up to be a bad month for Apple, after January saw shares tank and February failed to impress. Judging only by the pattern described above, this could be a good time to jump in.</p>\n<p><b>Calendar pattern says: buy Apple</b></p>\n<p>The second reason to buy Apple now has to do with annual patterns in stock returns. The graph below tells a compelling story.</p>\n<p>Notice that the average monthly gains in Apple shares over the past five years have been best in the summer months of July and August. Prior to this period, the returns improve slowly throughout the spring, as the stock recovers from an underwhelming holiday quarter.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/563f095f6d02bf7c530705e701c30e2b\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"299\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Stock Rover</span></p>\n<p>There is some logic to this pattern. September tends to be the month in which the new iPhone model is announced, a few weeks ahead of Black Friday. At that point, investors have likely already bid up the share price in anticipation for Apple’s “hot season” of sales. Sell-the-news pressures begin to accumulate.</p>\n<p>In 2021, something similar could happen. The market’s preference for small-cap value stocks over mega-cap growth ones during a year of economic recovery will eventually fizzle. At that point, chatter about&nbsp;Apple’s iPhone 13 will begin to surface. Think of it like a self-driving car.</p>\n<p>You put in your destination, buckle up in the backseat and your driver (robo adviser) will get there. You, the passenger, can’t easily slam the breaks if you fear your driver is leading you in the wrong direction. Nor can you put your foot on the gas pedal if you’re in a rush and want to get to your destination faster.</p>\n<p>Robo-investing platforms use advanced-trading algorithm software to design investment portfolios based on factors such as an individual’s appetite for risk-taking and desired short-term and long-term returns.</p>\n<p>There are over 200 platforms that provide these services charging typically no more than a 0.5% annual advisory fee, compared to the 1% annual fee human investment advisors charge.</p>\n<p>And rather than investing entirely on your own, which can become a second job and lead to emotional investment decisions, robo advisers handle buying and selling assets.</p>\n<p>Cynthia Loh, Schwab vice president of Digital Advice and Innovation, disagrees, and argues that robo investing doesn’t mean giving technology control of your money. Schwab, she said, has a team of investment experts who oversee investment strategy and keep watch during periods of market volatility, although some services have more input from humans than others.</p>\n<p>As she recently wrote on MarketWatch: “One common misconception about automated investing is that choosing a robo adviser essentially means handing control of your money over to robots. The truth is that robo solutions have a combination of automated and human components running things behind the scenes.”</p>\n<p><b>Robos appeal to inexperienced investors</b></p>\n<p>Robo investing tends to appeal to inexperienced investors or ones who don’t have the time or energy to manage their own portfolios. These investors can take comfort in the “set it and forget it approach to investing and overtime let the markets do their thing,” Barse said.</p>\n<p>That makes it much easier to stomach market volatility knowing that you don’t necessarily have to make spur-of-the-moment decisions to buy or sell assets, said Tiffany Lam-Balfour, an investing and retirement specialist at NerdWallet.</p>\n<p>“When you’re investing, you don’t want to keep looking at the market and going ‘Oh I need to get out of this,’” she said. “You want to leave it to the professionals to get you through it because they know what your time horizon is, and they’ll adjust your portfolio automatically for you.”</p>\n<p>That said, “you can’t just expect your investments will only go up. Even if you had the world’s best human financial adviser you can’t expect that.”</p>\n<p>Others disagree, and say robo advisers appeal to older investors. “Planning for and paying yourself in retirement is complex. The simplistic questionnaire you’re required to fill out will on most robo-investing platforms will collect information on your annual income, desired age to retire and the level of risk you’re willing to take on.</p>\n<p>It won’t however know if you just had a child and would like to begin saving for their education down the road or if you recently lost your job.</p>\n<p>“The question then becomes to whom does that person go to for advice and does that platform offer that and if so, to what level of complexity?” said Barse.</p>\n<p>Not all platforms give individualized investment advice and the hybrid models that do offer advice from a human tend to charge higher annual fees.</p>\n<p>Additionally, a robo adviser won’t necessarily “manage your money with tax efficiency at front of mind,” said Roger Ma, a certified financial planner at Lifelaidout, a New York City-based financial advisory group.</p>\n<p>For instance, one common way investors offset the taxes they pay on long-term investments is by selling assets that have accrued losses. Traditional advisers often specialize in constructing portfolios that lead to the most tax-efficient outcomes, said Ma, who is the author of “Work Your Money, Not Your Life”.</p>\n<p>But with robo investing, the trades that are made for you are the same ones that are being made for a slew of other investors who may fall under a different tax-bracket than you.</p>\n<p>On top of that, while robo investing may feel like a simplistic way to get into investing, especially for beginners it can “overcomplicate investing,” Ma said.</p>\n<p>“If you are just looking to dip your toe in and you want to feel like you’re invested in a diversified portfolio, I wouldn’t say definitely don’t do a robo adviser,” he said.</p>\n<p>Don’t rule out investing through a target-date fund that selects a single fund to invest in and adjusts the position over time based on their investment goals, he added.</p>\n<p>But not everyone can tell the difference between robo advice and advice from a human being.
