The S&P 500 has also made it more than a year since its last 10% correction, and some investors are growing concerned that a combination of historically high stock valuations, rising inflation, the COVID-19 variant and the possibility that aggressive Federal Reserve tightening could trigger a market crash in the next couple of quarters.
\n

\n
Historically, the S&P 500 has averaged about one 10% pullback per yearsince 1950. Long-term investors have no reason to fear temporary market pullbacks, but there are ways to prepare for the next stock market crash to reduce your risk and take advantage of the potential buying opportunity. Here are three things to do before the next stock market crash.
\n
1. Diversify Your Portfolio
\n
Not all market sectors and asset classes take the same hit when the stock market crashes, but it’s difficult to predict beforehand which stocks will be hit hardest. The market crash in 2008 hit bank and housing stocks hardest, while the crash in 2020 was particularly bad for travel and retail stocks. Growth stocks also tend to take a harder hit than value stocks during market crashes. By diversifying your portfolio into different types of stocks, bonds, commodities and other investments, you are ensuring that your portfolio won’t be overexposed to the worst parts of the next market crash or underexposed to any investments that may avoid the sell-off.
\n
2. Raise Cash
\n
There have been countless pullbacks, crashes and recessions throughout history. One strategy that has worked every single time for long-term investors during those periods is buying the dip. But to buy the dip, you must have cash or margin available.
\n
If you are 100% invested, your hands will be tied and your only option may be tosell stockat the worst possible time. Market crashes are nearly impossible to predict, so there’s no need to dump all your stocks now and transition to all cash. But raising the amount of cash in your account to 10%, 20% or whatever level makes you feel more comfortable allows you to be opportunistic when the next crash happens.
\n
3. Maintain A Watch List
\n
Investors tend to not make the best, most rational decisions during the worst of a stock market crash. It’s best if you have a plan of action before the crash so that you aren’t trying to make emotional decisions when it seems like the sky is falling.
\n
Before the stock market turns south, make a list of stocks you may potentially be interested in buying on the dip. Research these companies and vet them prior to the crash so that all you have to do when the opportunity to buy the dip arises is click that “buy” button.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Worried About A Market Crash? You might even be able to include some undervalued stocks in your portfolio with a little spare change.
\n
Walt Disney Co. (DIS)
\n
AFM Visuals/Shutterstock
\n
Disney’s stock got hammered in the pandemic’s early days, shedding about 38% of its value in the month ending March 20, 2020. After rallying for much of last year, it’s down almost 15% since the beginning of 2021. Disney’s earnings in the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended Oct. 2, came in about $200 million short of expectations. Its theme parks are still operating at reduced capacity, so Q4’s results could have been much worse.
\n
Streaming platform Disney+ is up to 118.1 million subscribers, and the company projects that figure will grow to more than 230 million by 2024. While the company says Disney+ subscriber growth slowed, revenue from subscriptions across Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu was $4.6 billion in Q4 — 38% higher than a year before.
\n
Disney remains a beloved global brand and says it expects international visitors to parks to pick up later in 2022 as restrictions ease. JPMorgan Chase predicts a full economic rebound from COVID-19 in 2022, and if that’s true, Disney’s theme parks could once again be packed.
\n
Mastercard (MA)
\n
garmoncheg/Shutterstock
\n
Mastercard’s stock has been mostly trending downward since July, and it recently hit the skids, shrinking by 17% from Nov. 16 through Dec. 1. However, it’s trending upward over the last week or so, recovering most of that recent loss.
\n
The sell-off of Mastercard’s stock doesn’t appear to have anything to do with the company’s performance. Q3 net revenue was $5 billion, a year-over-year increase of 30%. Purchase volume was up 23% over the same period.
\n
Mastercard’s in a tricky position. Buy now, pay later apps are doing their best to disrupt the credit card space, and the company doesn’t currently seem to have an answer that will help increase the company’s cache with younger users.
\n
But that could be more of a long-term issue. In the short-term, inflation-jacked prices mean customers are paying more, and a rebound in tourism and credit card spending should have the company’s users — there’s almost a billion of them — ringing up purchases left and right.
\n
AT&T (T)
\n
Jonathan Weiss/Shutterstock
\n
AT&T’s stock has been on a downward tumble for a while now. Its share price is 45% lower than it was five years ago, and is down more than 22% this year alone.
\n
AT&T has taken some big swings that haven’t paid off. Its purchase of DirecTV and Time Warner in 2015 and 2018, respectively, added more than $130 billion in debt to the company’s balance sheet. Last year, T-Mobile replaced AT&T as America’s second-largest wireless carrier.
\n
None of that sounds particularly enticing, but the company knows changes need to be made. It divested a number of its smaller businesses and some of its real estate holdings and sold 30% of DirecTV to streamline operations and free up capital for the expansion of its 5G network, which could be huge.
\n
AT&T is still a risky buy with its stumbles this year, but if you believe in the turnaround plan, the anxiety might be worthwhile. Big picture, AT&T continues to boast the scale advantages required to compete in the high-growth wireless space long term.
\n
If your faith in the market is flagging …
\n
MartinLueke/Shutterstock
\n
With elite investors like Charlie Munger, Michael Burry and Jeremy Grantham all saying the market is due for a correction, it might be worth looking into investments other than stocks.
\n
There’s no shortage of unique alternative assets you can invest in that have little correlation with the stock market, including luxury vehicles, commercial real estate, blue-chip artworks or even marine finance.
\n
Traditionally, many alternative asset classes have only been available to millionaires because of the enormous costs involved.

The S&P 500 has also made it more than a year since its last 10% correction, and some investors are growing concerned that a combination of historically high stock valuations, rising inflation, the COVID-19 variant and the possibility that aggressive Federal Reserve tightening could trigger a market crash in the next couple of quarters.\n\nHistorically, the S&P 500 has averaged about one 10% pullback per yearsince 1950. Long-term investors have no reason to fear temporary market pullbacks, but there are ways to prepare for the next stock market crash to reduce your risk and take advantage of the potential buying opportunity. Here are three things to do before the next stock market crash.\n1. Diversify Your Portfolio\nNot all market sectors and asset classes take the same hit when the stock market crashes, but it’s difficult to predict beforehand which stocks will be hit hardest. The market crash in 2008 hit bank and housing stocks hardest, while the crash in 2020 was particularly bad for travel and retail stocks. Growth stocks also tend to take a harder hit than value stocks during market crashes. By diversifying your portfolio into different types of stocks, bonds, commodities and other investments, you are ensuring that your portfolio won’t be overexposed to the worst parts of the next market crash or underexposed to any investments that may avoid the sell-off.\n2. Raise Cash\nThere have been countless pullbacks, crashes and recessions throughout history. One strategy that has worked every single time for long-term investors during those periods is buying the dip. But to buy the dip, you must have cash or margin available.\nIf you are 100% invested, your hands will be tied and your only option may be tosell stockat the worst possible time. Market crashes are nearly impossible to predict, so there’s no need to dump all your stocks now and transition to all cash. But raising the amount of cash in your account to 10%, 20% or whatever level makes you feel more comfortable allows you to be opportunistic when the next crash happens.\n3. Maintain A Watch List\nInvestors tend to not make the best, most rational decisions during the worst of a stock market crash. It’s best if you have a plan of action before the crash so that you aren’t trying to make emotional decisions when it seems like the sky is falling.\nBefore the stock market turns south, make a list of stocks you may potentially be interested in buying on the dip. Research these companies and vet them prior to the crash so that all you have to do when the opportunity to buy the dip arises is click that “buy” button.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":853,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":877692159,"gmtCreate":1637920900159,"gmtModify":1637920900255,"author":{"id":"3575018034770296","authorId":"3575018034770296","name":"AppleSeed","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dd7084b7c374d1c9d55f5a6efe3e1115","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575018034770296","authorIdStr":"3575018034770296"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"👍🏻","listText":"👍🏻","text":"👍🏻","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/877692159","repostId":"1101305277","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1101305277","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1637919133,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1101305277?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-11-26 17:32","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"Meituan total revenues increased by 37.9% to RMB48.8 billion year-over-year for Q3.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1101305277","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"For the third quarter of 2021, Meituan total revenues increased by 37.9% to RMB48.8 billion from RMB","content":"
For the third quarter of 2021, Meituan total revenues increased by 37.9% to RMB48.8 billion from RMB35.4 billion for the same period of 2020
\n
The food delivery and in-store, hotel & travel segments realized solid growth, with an aggregate operating profit of RMB4.7 billion from these segments in the third quarter of 2021, up from RMB3.6 billion for the same period of 2020; while operating loss from the new initiatives and others segment expanded, as the company continued to invest in areas that would bring long-term value to the Company.
\n
As a result, both adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net profit experienced negative year-over-year growth for the third quarter of 2021 and turned to negative RMB4.1 billion and adjusted net loss RMB5.5 billion, respectively.
\n
Meituan net cash flows from operating activities turned to an outflow of RMB4.0 billion in the third quarter of 2021 from an inflow of RMB3.3 billion for the same period of 2020. Here’s what you need to know before trying to make changes to your portfolio.\nIs the Stock Market Closed on Black Friday?\nNo, the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will be open on Black Friday. But you’ll have to get your trades in early, because both close at 1 p.m. Eastern.\nU.S. bond markets and U.S. over-the-counter markets will shut down at 2 p.m.\nAre Foreign Stock Exchanges Open on Black Friday?\nThe Toronto Stock Exchange, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the London Stock Exchange, and the Shanghai Stock Exchange will all be open on Black Friday.\nHow Has the Stock Market Previously Performed on Black Friday?\nFrom 2001 to 2020, the S&P 500‘s performance on Black Friday was mixed, finishing up just half of the time. The index gained more than 1% on three Black Fridays—in 2001, 2007, and 2012—while it slipped 1.7% on the “retail holiday” in 2009.\nWhat Does Black Friday Mean for Retailers?\nInvestors have been optimistic in the leadup to the holiday season. Many retailers have had to learn how to leverage the pandemic for their physical stores—and they’ve seen increased bricks-and-mortar shopping.\nLast week, retail giant Walmart (ticker: WMT) reported third-quarter earnings and sales that beat Wall Street estimates, with the company raising its fiscal-year guidance. Home Depot(HD) also reported third-quarter earnings that beat earnings expectations, thanks to continued interest in home improvement amid a strong housing market.\nRetail stocks have largely performed well so far this year: the SPDR S&P Retail exchange-traded fund (XRT) is up roughly 60%, while the S&P 500 has gained around 25%. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Consumer Discretionary ETF (RCD), which is evenly weighted so that price movements aren’t too swayed by any one stock, has climbed about 30%.\nIs the Stock Market Open on Cyber Monday?\nYes. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will return to normal trading hours and open at 9:30 a.m. Eastern on Nov. 29th, or Cyber Monday, when many retailers are planning to offer special discounts online.\nU.S. bond markets and U.S. over-the-counter markets will also resume regular hours of operation.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":613,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":860846010,"gmtCreate":1632155861130,"gmtModify":1632802438034,"author":{"id":"3575018034770296","authorId":"3575018034770296","name":"AppleSeed","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dd7084b7c374d1c9d55f5a6efe3e1115","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575018034770296","authorIdStr":"3575018034770296"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Thanks for the tip.","listText":"Thanks for the tip.","text":"Thanks for the tip.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/860846010","repostId":"1109188181","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1109188181","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1632123243,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1109188181?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-09-20 15:34","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Savvy stock traders use these 2 insider tips to know when to buy and sell","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1109188181","media":"MarketWatch","summary":"MACD and the MACD-Histogram can give your trading portfolio a boost.\n\nFor many stock traders, four l","content":"
\n MACD and the MACD-Histogram can give your trading portfolio a boost.\n
\n
For many stock traders, four letters can spell the difference between a winning and losing position. MACD (moving average convergence divergence) ranks among the key stock market indicators (along with moving averages and RSI) that traders use consistently in their analysis.
\n
Let’s discuss a number of creative ways to use this powerful and versatile gauge.
\n
MACD, introduced in the late 1970s, is a trend-following momentum indicator. It helps to determine when a trend, and its associated momentum (i.e., directional speed and duration) has ended or begun, or might reverse direction.
\n
Be aware that MACD is a “lagging” or “backward-looking” indicator, which means its signals are delayed, but don’t let that deter you. When MACD yields a signal, it is often significant, especially if used on a weekly chart (versus the daily chart favored by short-term traders). In fact, the longer the MACD time frame, the more valid the results, which is one reason longer-term traders like myself prefer to use a weekly chart.
\n
When you view MACD on a chart, you see two lines. The black line is referred to as the “MACD line.” The gray (or red) line is referred to as the “signal line.” Remember: the MACD line is the leader line, while the signal line is the laggard line.
\n
In addition, a horizontal line runs across the chart called the “zero line” (0 line). The main function of the zero line is to alert you to the primary trend of the underlying price action.
\n
Four simple trading signals
\n
At its most basic level, MACD generates four signals:
\n
Buy:When the MACD line crosses above the zero line, it’s bullish.
\n
Buy:When the MACD line crosses above the nine-day signal line, it’s bullish.
\n
Sell:When the MACD line crosses below the zero line, it’s bearish.
\n
Sell:When the MACD line crosses below the nine-day signal line, it’s bearish.
\n
Note: When both the MACD line and nine-day signal line move in the same direction (uptrend or downtrend), that is a stronger, more significant signal.
\n
Keep in mind that just because MACD generates a buy or sell signal does not mean it is an actionable trade. Like that of any indicator, there are false signals. In addition, it’s essential that you confirm with other indicators before betting real money on a trade. Think of these MACD buy and sell signals as guidelines, not rules.
\n
Another limitation of MACD is that it does not work as well at stock market tops or when market volatility is low. Therefore, if you use MACD on the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.48%or the S&P 500SPX,-0.91%in this current market, the signal is not as useful. That is why you should use MACD on individual stocks until volatility returns to the major market indexes.
\n
What MACD says about Tesla now
\n
For example, the weekly stock chart of TeslaTSLA,+0.33%shows its MACD is above the zero line, and the MACD line is above the signal line. Tesla is also above its moving averages.
\n
Based on this information, Tesla stock currently is a short-term “strong” buy. If Tesla’s MACD line drops below its signal line while both lines are above the zero line, the shares would be a “moderate” buy.
\n
A few years ago, I spoke with MACD’s creator, Gerald Appel. He told me that he created MACD in the late 1970s by entering numbers into a punch machine and a spreadsheet. After the personal computer was invented, he was able to automate the process.
\n
Appel expressed surprise that MACD became so popular. “It works because it’s adaptable to any time frame,” he said. “You can get a good reading of the major trend of the market by using MACD patterns that are based on monthly data. You can also use it on a five-minute chart.”
\n
MACD gives the most precise signals at market bottoms. Said Appel: “It’s more accurate at market low points than high points because of the way the market behaves. Market bottoms tend to be very sharp and pronounced, while tops tend to be broad and slow. It’s also possible for the market averages to keep drifting upwards while more and more stocks are falling.”
\n
Appel cautioned that you must confirm MACD signals against other indicators. “No indicator is infallible,” he said. “You might get a market rise and MACD turns down. Perhaps you think this is a sell signal. Well, it might not be.”
\n
Appel added that he likes to work with different MACD time frames simultaneously. For example, if the short-term MACD turns up along with the intermediate MACD, he’s more confident that the signal is valid.
\n
The MACD-Histogram
\n
One of the most powerful (but often ignored) additions to the MACD is the MACD-Histogram. Developed by Thomas Aspray in 1986, this oscillator is used to gauge momentum. It is a separate program that should be available on your charting package. Traders who use this feature typically view both MACD and the histogram on a stock chart simultaneously.
\n
The histogram is a series of bar graphs at the bottom of the stock screen. If the bars move above the zero line, it means the underlying stock (or index) is gaining strength, i.e., momentum. If the bars move below the zero line, the stock or index is losing strength.
\n
Many beginning traders don’t realize that momentum always changes before price does. That is what makes MACD and the MACD-Histogram so valuable. Both indicators detect when momentum is weakening. It could also be a signal to become bullish if the histogram bars move above the zero line.
\n
Histogram signals
\n
\n
If the MACD-Histogram bar changes to a lighter color, it means that momentum is diminishing. It is not a sell signal; it simply means that enthusiasm for that particular stock is waning.
\n
\n
\n
As mentioned earlier, if the histogram bar rises above the zero line, that is a buy signal. An uptrend may be developing. If the histogram bar drops below the zero line, that is a sell signal. A downtrend may be developing.
\n
\n
Red flags
\n
If you see the index prices as well as stock prices move higher, but MACD turns lower, that is a red flag. In addition, if you see the MACD-Histogram changing colors and the bars getting shorter, that confirms momentum is weakening (but confirm this against RSI or stochastics).
\n
If you have never used MACD or MACD-Histogram, give it a try. Use these measures for any stock that has hit bottom and is on its way higher. They’ll help confirm whether the stock has legs or is a just giving traders a head fake.
\n
Michael Sincere (michaelsincere.com) is the author of “Understanding Options” and “Understanding Stocks.”
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Savvy stock traders use these 2 insider tips to know when to buy and sell
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nSavvy stock traders use these 2 insider tips to know when to buy and sell\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-20 15:34 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
MACD and the MACD-Histogram can give your trading portfolio a boost.\n\nFor many stock traders, four letters can spell the difference between a winning and losing position.
