She knows ups and downs are to be expected, but what she’s seeing happen with investment fads like GameStop has her concerned.</p>\n<p>“I don’t like what I see happening in the market right now,” Orman said in a video for CNBC. “The economy has been horrible, but the stock market has been going.”</p>\n<p>While investing is as easy now asusing a smartphone app, Orman is concerned about where we can go from these record highs.</p>\n<p>And even with stimulus checks, which are still going out, and the real estate market breaking its own records last year, Orman worries about what will come with the coronavirus — especially as new variants continue to pop up.</p>\n<p>What's more, she feels it’s just been too long since the last crash to stay this high much longer.</p>\n<p>“This reminds me of 2000 all over again,” Orman says.</p>\n<p><b>The Buffett Indicator</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44ada32ecadcc4581fed208f4f4e4d53\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Larry W Smith/EPA/Shutterstock</p>\n<p>One metric Warren Buffett uses to assess the market so regularly that it’s been named after him has been flashing red for long enough that market watchers are starting to wonder if it’s an outdated tool.</p>\n<p>But the Buffett Indicator, a measurement of the ratio of the stock market’s total value against U.S. economic output, continues to climb to previously unseen levels.</p>\n<p>And those in the know are wondering if it's a sign that we’re about to see a hard fall.</p>\n<p>How to prepare for a crash<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ad912a6b4611d9e39b46d2851c78c9e\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Freedomz / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>Orman has three recommendations for setting up a simple investment strategy to help you successfully navigate any sharp turns in the market.</p>\n<p><b>1. Buy low</b></p>\n<p>Part of what upsets Orman so much about the furor over meme stocks like GameStop is it goes completely against the average investor’s interests.</p>\n<p>“All of you have your heads screwed on backwards,” she says. “All you want is for these markets to go up and up and up. What good is that going to do you?”</p>\n<p>She points out the only extra money most people have goes towardinvesting for retirementin their 401(k) or IRA plans.</p>\n<p>Because you probably don’t plan to touch that money for decades, the best long-term strategy is to buy low. That way, your dollar will go much further now, leaving plenty of room for growth over the next 20, 30 or 40 years.</p>\n<p><b>2. Invest on a schedule</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e4102f8a6d5002090743b1cbded32ef9\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">katjen / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>While she prefers to buy low, Orman doesn’t recommend you stop investing completely when the market goes up.</p>\n<p>She wants casual investors to not get caught up in the daily ups and downs of the market.</p>\n<p>In fact, cheering for downturns now may be your best bet at getting a larger piece of very profitable investments — like some lucky investors were able to do back in 2007 and 2008.</p>\n<p>“When the market went down, down, down you could buy things at nothing,” says Orman. “And now look at them 15 years later.”</p>\n<p>She suggests you set up a dollar-cost averaging strategy, which means you invest your money in equal portions at regular intervals, regardless of the market’s fluctuations.</p>\n<p>This kind of approach is easy to implement with any of the many investing apps currently available to DIY investors.</p>\n<p>There are even apps that willautomatically invest your spare changeby rounding up your debit and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar.</p>\n<p><b>3. Diversify with fractional shares</b></p>\n<p>To help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.</p>\n<p>Orman particularly recommends fractional-share investing. This approach allows you to buy a slice of a share for a big-name company that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.</p>\n<p>With the help of apopular stock-trading tool, anyone at any budget can afford the fractional share strategy.</p>\n<p>“The sooner you begin, the more money you will have,” says Orman. “Just don’t stop, and when these markets go down, you should be so happy because your dollars find more shares.”</p>\n<p>“And the more shares you have, the more money you’ll have 20, 40, 50 years from now.”</p>\n<p><b>What else you can do</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5e79c6fd1f8fa6e3a7c3a6c94f1e14b5\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">goodluz / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>Whether or not a big crash is around the corner, investors who are still decades out from retirement can make that work for them, Orman said in theCNBC video.</p>\n<p>First, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Since the onset of the pandemic, Orman now recommends everyone have an emergency fund that can cover their expenses for a full year.</p>\n<p>Then, to set yourself up fora comfortable retirement, she suggests you opt for a Roth account, whether that’s a 401(k) or IRA.</p>\n<p>That will help you avoid paying tax when you take money out of your retirement account because your contributions to a Roth account are made after tax. Diversify with fractional shares\nTo help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.\nOrman particularly recommends fractional-share investing. Most likely, when that is posted&nbsp;on the Fed’s website&nbsp;at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, most folks will probably head straight for the FOMC’s guesses on the fed-funds rate, and specifically when liftoff from near-zero is finally expected.</p>\n<p>The “dot plot”—or graph of the FOMC members’ consensus guesses—puts the first hike all the way out past 2023. That seems a very long-term forecast, and as John Maynard Keynes famously pointed out, in the long run we’re all dead. Some Fed watchers, such as J.P. Morgan’s chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, look for the dots to show a 2023 liftoff.</p>\n<p>The markets, however, already had been pricing in one or more fed-funds rate hikes by 2023. But concurrent with the previously discussed slide in longer-term bond yields, the interest-rate futures markets have effectively priced out one of those short-term rate increases. That includes a $3.2 trillion rise in the value of equities owned by households and a $968 billion rise in their real estate holdings.</p>\n<p>The key criterion for reduced Fed accommodation is whether the monetary authorities see “substantial further progress” toward reaching what they deem as maximum employment, probably a deliberately ambiguous standard.</p>\n<p>But the increase in payrolls appears to be constrained as much by the supply of labor as businesses’ desire to hire. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or Jolts, showed&nbsp;a record 9.3 million unfilled openings&nbsp;in April. In addition, 384,000 people left their positions that month, bringing the total of voluntary job quitters to a record four million.</p>\n<p>Anecdotal evidence, including some in the Fed’s beige book summary of economic conditions prepared for the coming meeting, suggests that employers aren’t finding enough workers because of generous unemployment compensation. Unusual for a social science such as economics, there will be a real-time experiment to test this hypothesis as 25 states end the extra $300 weekly payment early.</p>\n<p>Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons write in a research note that these 25 states account for about a quarter of all the unemployed workers. Ending their extra jobless benefits could boost employment by roughly two million in the next few months, they estimate. Another growth spurt should follow in September and October after the extra unemployment insurance expires in the remaining states; schools reopen—providing free daycare for some would-be workers, especially women; and many office employees return to their desks, they add.</p>\n<p>At that point, the Fed might start talking about actually reducing its massive securities purchases. Several factors, however, have the potential to end the party.</p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 has had its second-best first half of a year since 1998, and it hasn’t shown many signs of letting up. The index ended June up 14.4% year to date, hitting several records during the month and posting another record close on Thursday.</p>\n<p>Yet there are a couple key risks that could turn all of that around, according to Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek.</p>\n<p>First, there’s the possibility of an oil price shock, as the price of crude has shown little sign of cooling off. WTI crude oil is up 56% year to date and notched a&nbsp;new multi-year high&nbsp;Thursday—even amid growing&nbsp;expectations that OPEC will increase supply. If oil prices run hot enough, that could raise inflation to a level that—if sustained — could cause consumer demand to fall and that could surpass Federal Reserve expectations.</p>\n<p>“Suddenly higher oil prices” is atop the list of stock market concerns for Colas. “Rapidly rising oil prices will cause U.S. inflation to overshoot the Fed’s desired outcome and also stress the American consumer.”</p>\n<p>Both those things could dent the stock market, which has long benefited from the Fed’s accommodative monetary policy, especially if the Fed signals that interest-rate increases could come sooner than expected.</p>\n<p>That means the Fed will need to tread carefully when discussing rates to avoid spooking the market, Colas says.</p>\n<p>“Federal Reserve miscommunication about upcoming policy changes and/or raising interest rates too aggressively” is a second risk, Colas says. For instance, the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;dived 18% over roughly three months in late 2018 as the Fed raised rates, despite the market’s hope at that time for rates to stay put.</p>\n<p>Peaking earnings growth is the other threat to stocks, Colas says. Earnings growth for the average S&amp;P 500 company is expected slow down to 11% in 2022 from 36% in 2021, according to FactSet, as the economy normalizes and the postpandemic recovery eases. But on average, S&amp;P 500 stocks trade at 21.5 times expected earnings for the next 12 months, still above the index’s pre-pandemic multiple. WTI crude oil is up 56% year to date and notched a new multi-year high Thursday—even amid growing expectations that OPEC will increase supply. If oil prices run hot enough, that could raise inflation to a level that—if sustained — could cause consumer demand to fall and that could surpass Federal Reserve expectations.\n“Suddenly higher oil prices” is atop the list of stock market concerns for Colas. “Rapidly rising oil prices will cause U.S. inflation to overshoot the Fed’s desired outcome and also stress the American consumer.”\nBoth those things could dent the stock market, which has long benefited from the Fed’s accommodative monetary policy, especially if the Fed signals that interest-rate increases could come sooner than expected.\nThat means the Fed will need to tread carefully when discussing rates to avoid spooking the market, Colas says.\n“Federal Reserve miscommunication about upcoming policy changes and/or raising interest rates too aggressively” is a second risk, Colas says. Most retail investors have to wait until companies start publicly trading to buy stock.<i>Barron’s</i>looked at businesses that have gone public in the past 12 months to find some strong performers.</p><p>First, we searched for companies that listed via a traditional initial public offering: This meant we filtered out businesses that merged withspecial purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs. Then, we searched for companies that went public on either the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. We also focused on entities that had at least a $1 billion market capitalization. We narrowed our search to companies with the highesttotal returns from their stock offering prices..</p><p>That left us with 11 names. First up:CureVac(ticker: CVAC), which was the screen’s best-performing IPO and had a total return of 596.75%. CureVac specializes in the messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology that is the basis of several leading Covid-19 vaccine programs. The German biotech company went public inAugust at $16 a shareand soared 249% in its first day, with the stock closing at $55.90. In January, CureVacstruck a deal with Bayerto accelerate the development and supply of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine is now in clinical trials, and Phase2b/3 data is expected this summer. Since its IPO, the stock has nearly doubled, closingFriday at $111.48 .</p><p>Strong performances need not be dictated by success on the first day of trading. Four of the companies that made our list were busted deals—meaning that their shares fell below their IPO prices on the first day of trading.</p><p>Case in point:ZIM Integrated Shipping(ZIM). The asset-light shipping company went public in January with a $15 offering price,but closed that day at $11.50. Yet by May 19, ZIM’s stockhad gained 295%after itreported first-quarter earnings of $589.6 million, or $5.35 a share. The companyalso declared a special cash dividend of $2 a share. ZIM is the second-best-performing IPO in the past 12 months, based on a total return of 209.33%, according to FactSet. It closed on Friday at $46.40.</p><p>Another example isAcademy Sports &amp; Outdoors(ASO): The companywent public in Octoberwith a $13 offering price, with the stock closing at $12.99 during its first day of public trading<b>.</b>Academy was profitable when it went public, a rarity in the IPO market. InMarch, the company reported that its net incomesoared 416%, to $91.5 million, or 97 cents a share, for its fourth fiscal quarter ended Jan. 30. Its shares have nearly tripled since the IPO, and were trading at $36.53 on Friday. Academy Sports ranks third with a total return from the offering price of 181%, FactSet said.</p><p>Strong GainersThese companies all went public in the last year and produced high total returns compared to their IPO prices.<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9dedc209ede147958c015d3a586bb587\" tg-width=\"630\" tg-height=\"606\">Rounding out this category areCorsair Gaming(CRSR), a California companythat makes performance gear for gamers, and the Dubai-basedYalla Group(YALA), whichmakes a voice-chat app usedin the Middle East and North Africa called Yalla. Both stocks have rebounded strongly after less-than-stellar September IPOs.</p><p>Some companies that made our list soared during their debuts, but have since seen their shares retreat. Still, these companies are producing gains.</p><p>ConsiderBigCommerce(BIGC), which provides a cloud e-commerce platform that is used by such customers as SkullCandy, Savannah Bee Co, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.BigCommerce&nbsp;went public in Augustwith a $24 offering price—and the stock soared 201% that day,closing at $72.27. Since the IPO, the shares have fallen nearly 25%, amid a broader technology selloff.</p><p>The company, however, has reported some positive developments, like a deal in February that wouldgive BigCommerce customersthe ability to sell directly on Walmart Marketplace. It also reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. BigCommerce has produced a total return of nearly 127%, according to FactSet.</p><p>Other companies have seen their shares jump since going public.Dream Finders Homes (DFH), which designs, builds, and sells homes in high-growth markets, was already profitable when it made its trading debut in January at $13 a share. Shares soared 61%, $20.95 on its first day.Prices for houses in Marchgrew at the fastest rate since 2005, which has helped real estate stocks. Dream Finders stock has gained nearly 52% since its IPO, trading Friday at $31.77. Most retail investors have to wait until companies start publicly trading to buy stock.Barron’slooked at businesses that have gone public in the past 12 months to find some strong performers.First, we searched for companies that listed via a traditional initial public offering: This meant we filtered out businesses that merged withspecial purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs. Then, we searched for companies that went public on either the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. We also focused on entities that had at least a $1 billion market capitalization. We narrowed our search to companies with the highesttotal returns from their stock offering prices..That left us with 11 names. First up:CureVac(ticker: CVAC), which was the screen’s best-performing IPO and had a total return of 596.75%. CureVac specializes in the messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology that is the basis of several leading Covid-19 vaccine programs. The German biotech company went public inAugust at $16 a shareand soared 249% in its first day, with the stock closing at $55.90. In January, CureVacstruck a deal with Bayerto accelerate the development and supply of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine is now in clinical trials, and Phase2b/3 data is expected this summer. Since its IPO, the stock has nearly doubled, closingFriday at $111.48 .Strong performances need not be dictated by success on the first day of trading. Four of the companies that made our list were busted deals—meaning that their shares fell below their IPO prices on the first day of trading.Case in point:ZIM Integrated Shipping(ZIM). The asset-light shipping company went public in January with a $15 offering price,but closed that day at $11.50. Yet by May 19, ZIM’s stockhad gained 295%after itreported first-quarter earnings of $589.6 million, or $5.35 a share. The companyalso declared a special cash dividend of $2 a share. Still, these companies are producing gains.ConsiderBigCommerce(BIGC), which provides a cloud e-commerce platform that is used by such customers as SkullCandy, Savannah Bee Co, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.BigCommerce went public in Augustwith a $24 offering price—and the stock soared 201% that day,closing at $72.27. Since the IPO, the shares have fallen nearly 25%, amid a broader technology selloff.The company, however, has reported some positive developments, like a deal in February that wouldgive BigCommerce customersthe ability to sell directly on Walmart Marketplace. It also reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. To do this, let's compare the revenue growth trends of the key segments of the company with and without the results of the last four quarters.</p><p>The dynamics of the 'Online Stores' segment showed a qualitative breakthrough. Without taking into account the last four quarters, a near-linear trend was observed here. And secondly, it assumes a</i><i><b>25% growth</b></i><i>in capitalization in the next four quarters.</i></p><p>#2 Comparative Valuation</p><p>In the previous block, I modeled Amazon's balanced price based on revenue. What is remarkable is that if we apply the same approach to the comparative valuation of the company using multiples, we will fail. At least I have not been able to find a single revenue-based multiple that would make it possible to successfully compare Amazon to other companies. In a sense, this is a startup with $73 billion cash.</li><li>The fact that Amazon remains in the acceleration phase does not mean that its capitalization is constantly undervalued. But in this case, based on the patterns between the company's capitalization and the parameters of its revenue, we can conclude that the company is<b>undervalued</b>.</li><li>Comparing Amazon to other companies through the prism of expected EPS growth, it must be admitted that the company is<b>much cheaper</b>than the market.</li><li>DCF model based on average expectations analysts indicate a 30% undervaluation. At the start of the year, a similarmodelindicated a 20% undervaluation.</li><li>When you look at Amazon's revenue forecast for the next decade, you realize that the company will face growth problems. She knows ups and downs are to be expected, but what she’s seeing happen with investment fads like GameStop has her concerned.</p>\n<p>“I don’t like what I see happening in the market right now,” Orman said in a video for CNBC. “The economy has been horrible, but the stock market has been going.”</p>\n<p>While investing is as easy now asusing a smartphone app, Orman is concerned about where we can go from these record highs.</p>\n<p>And even with stimulus checks, which are still going out, and the real estate market breaking its own records last year, Orman worries about what will come with the coronavirus — especially as new variants continue to pop up.</p>\n<p>What's more, she feels it’s just been too long since the last crash to stay this high much longer.</p>\n<p>“This reminds me of 2000 all over again,” Orman says.</p>\n<p><b>The Buffett Indicator</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44ada32ecadcc4581fed208f4f4e4d53\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Larry W Smith/EPA/Shutterstock</p>\n<p>One metric Warren Buffett uses to assess the market so regularly that it’s been named after him has been flashing red for long enough that market watchers are starting to wonder if it’s an outdated tool.</p>\n<p>But the Buffett Indicator, a measurement of the ratio of the stock market’s total value against U.S. economic output, continues to climb to previously unseen levels.</p>\n<p>And those in the know are wondering if it's a sign that we’re about to see a hard fall.</p>\n<p>How to prepare for a crash<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ad912a6b4611d9e39b46d2851c78c9e\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Freedomz / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>Orman has three recommendations for setting up a simple investment strategy to help you successfully navigate any sharp turns in the market.</p>\n<p><b>1. Buy low</b></p>\n<p>Part of what upsets Orman so much about the furor over meme stocks like GameStop is it goes completely against the average investor’s interests.</p>\n<p>“All of you have your heads screwed on backwards,” she says. “All you want is for these markets to go up and up and up. What good is that going to do you?”</p>\n<p>She points out the only extra money most people have goes towardinvesting for retirementin their 401(k) or IRA plans.</p>\n<p>Because you probably don’t plan to touch that money for decades, the best long-term strategy is to buy low. That way, your dollar will go much further now, leaving plenty of room for growth over the next 20, 30 or 40 years.</p>\n<p><b>2. Invest on a schedule</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e4102f8a6d5002090743b1cbded32ef9\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">katjen / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>While she prefers to buy low, Orman doesn’t recommend you stop investing completely when the market goes up.</p>\n<p>She wants casual investors to not get caught up in the daily ups and downs of the market.</p>\n<p>In fact, cheering for downturns now may be your best bet at getting a larger piece of very profitable investments — like some lucky investors were able to do back in 2007 and 2008.</p>\n<p>“When the market went down, down, down you could buy things at nothing,” says Orman. “And now look at them 15 years later.”</p>\n<p>She suggests you set up a dollar-cost averaging strategy, which means you invest your money in equal portions at regular intervals, regardless of the market’s fluctuations.</p>\n<p>This kind of approach is easy to implement with any of the many investing apps currently available to DIY investors.</p>\n<p>There are even apps that willautomatically invest your spare changeby rounding up your debit and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar.</p>\n<p><b>3. Diversify with fractional shares</b></p>\n<p>To help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.</p>\n<p>Orman particularly recommends fractional-share investing. This approach allows you to buy a slice of a share for a big-name company that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.</p>\n<p>With the help of apopular stock-trading tool, anyone at any budget can afford the fractional share strategy.</p>\n<p>“The sooner you begin, the more money you will have,” says Orman. “Just don’t stop, and when these markets go down, you should be so happy because your dollars find more shares.”</p>\n<p>“And the more shares you have, the more money you’ll have 20, 40, 50 years from now.”</p>\n<p><b>What else you can do</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5e79c6fd1f8fa6e3a7c3a6c94f1e14b5\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">goodluz / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>Whether or not a big crash is around the corner, investors who are still decades out from retirement can make that work for them, Orman said in theCNBC video.</p>\n<p>First, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Since the onset of the pandemic, Orman now recommends everyone have an emergency fund that can cover their expenses for a full year.</p>\n<p>Then, to set yourself up fora comfortable retirement, she suggests you opt for a Roth account, whether that’s a 401(k) or IRA.</p>\n<p>That will help you avoid paying tax when you take money out of your retirement account because your contributions to a Roth account are made after tax. Buy low\nPart of what upsets Orman so much about the furor over meme stocks like GameStop is it goes completely against the average investor’s interests.\n“All of you have your heads screwed on backwards,” she says. “All you want is for these markets to go up and up and up. What good is that going to do you?”\nShe points out the only extra money most people have goes towardinvesting for retirementin their 401(k) or IRA plans.\nBecause you probably don’t plan to touch that money for decades, the best long-term strategy is to buy low. That way, your dollar will go much further now, leaving plenty of room for growth over the next 20, 30 or 40 years.\n2. Diversify with fractional shares\nTo help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.\nOrman particularly recommends fractional-share investing.
