Clean energy stocks are down roughly 20% this year on an absolute basis, while energy, commodities, defense and tobacco stocks have all outperformed. This sharp contrast comes despite flows into ESG funds continuing at a record pace.\nRising prices will likely continue to pose a significant challenge for ESG funds in particular, Bernstein said, but added that there are a number of ways for these investors to lower their risk exposure.\nIn a note published June 10, Bernstein screened for ESG stocks in the U.S., Europe and Asia that are best positioned for rising inflation.\nBernstein screened for the stocks by considering three ways that sustainable investors could brace for a rising inflationary environment:\n1. Seeking out high-scoring ESG stocks that are positively exposed to rising bond yields.\n2. Investing in high-scoring ESG stocks which have robust pricing power.\n3. Identifying companies that have increased exposure to the energy, commodities and financials sectors.\nIn considering stocks that should be in an ESG portfolio, Bernstein recognized that investors may struggle to prioritize so-called “sin” stocks, such as energy and commodity companies, although these “value” stocks usually perform well when inflation and bond yields rise. Value stocks are seen as being underappreciated by the market.\nBernstein also highlighted that financials tend to be left on the sidelines by ESG investors, since measuring their environmental credentials can be tricky.\nU.S.\nThe analysts said that U.S. ESG funds are “not that well positioned” for inflation because they tend to be underweight on so-called value stocks. The bank did, however, single outState Street,LearandBank of New York Mellonamong its top picks of those positively exposed to rising bond yields. Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.</p>\n<p>AMC Entertainment</p>\n<p><b>AMC Entertainment</b>(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.</p>\n<p>The consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.</p>\n<p>But isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.</p>\n<p>However, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p>Clover Health Investments</p>\n<p>Only a few days ago, it looked like&nbsp;<b>Clover Health Investments</b>(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.</p>\n<p>Since the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.</p>\n<p>Clover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.</p>\n<p>Still, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.</p>\n<p>Sundial Growers</p>\n<p>At one point earlier this year,&nbsp;<b>Sundial Growers</b>(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.</p>\n<p>Analysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.</p>\n<p>There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.</p>\n<p>Sundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.</p>\n<p>However, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.\nSundial Growers\nAt one point earlier this year, Sundial Growers(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.\nAnalysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.\nThere certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.\nSundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.\nHowever, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.</p><p>What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.</p><p>So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls.As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.How to trade this?As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations wherea large amount of open interest is set to expire.In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. While the U.S. is poised for another quarter of strong growth, gross domestic product is still running a bit below where it was prior to the Covid-19 onset.That’s part of the reason Waller concurs with his fellow central bankers in seeingthe need to keep policy loose. The Fed is currently holding short-term borrowing rates near zero while it purchases at least $120 billion of bonds each month.In a major policy shift last year, the Fed pledged that it will not raise rates until it sees full and inclusive employment, and is willing to tolerate inflation a bit above the traditional 2% target until it gets there. We get 70% of the population vaccinated, then all the fundamentals are there for good, strong growth that we left back in January, February of 2020,” he said. “We’ve still got room to catch up to where we were. We’re making up for lost ground.”‘No reason to be pulling the plug’The economy officially entered recession in February 2020, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, which makes the official call on contractions and expansions. While the U.S. is poised for another quarter of strong growth, gross domestic product is still running a bit below where it was prior to the Covid-19 onset.That’s part of the reason Waller concurs with his fellow central bankers in seeingthe need to keep policy loose. The Fed is currently holding short-term borrowing rates near zero while it purchases at least $120 billion of bonds each month.In a major policy shift last year, the Fed pledged that it will not raise rates until it sees full and inclusive employment, and is willing to tolerate inflation a bit above the traditional 2% target until it gets there. inflation can be a “big problem” for sustainable investors, according to Bernstein, which named the best stocks to ride out this trend.\nThe bank said that inflation, and the potential for higher inflation, reflect “the single most important narrative” driving markets and investor concerns this year.\nIt’s already impacted environmental, social and governance (ESG) stocks in a big way. Clean energy stocks are down roughly 20% this year on an absolute basis, while energy, commodities, defense and tobacco stocks have all outperformed. This sharp contrast comes despite flows into ESG funds continuing at a record pace.\nRising prices will likely continue to pose a significant challenge for ESG funds in particular, Bernstein said, but added that there are a number of ways for these investors to lower their risk exposure.\nIn a note published June 10, Bernstein screened for ESG stocks in the U.S., Europe and Asia that are best positioned for rising inflation.\nBernstein screened for the stocks by considering three ways that sustainable investors could brace for a rising inflationary environment:\n1. Seeking out high-scoring ESG stocks that are positively exposed to rising bond yields.\n2. Investing in high-scoring ESG stocks which have robust pricing power.\n3. Identifying companies that have increased exposure to the energy, commodities and financials sectors.\nIn considering stocks that should be in an ESG portfolio, Bernstein recognized that investors may struggle to prioritize so-called “sin” stocks, such as energy and commodity companies, although these “value” stocks usually perform well when inflation and bond yields rise. Value stocks are seen as being underappreciated by the market.\nBernstein also highlighted that financials tend to be left on the sidelines by ESG investors, since measuring their environmental credentials can be tricky.\nU.S.\nThe analysts said that U.S. ESG funds are “not that well positioned” for inflation because they tend to be underweight on so-called value stocks. Startups that have raised outside funds often have to take these noncash charges as their valuations rise, if they prepare results in line with International Financial Reporting Standards.</p>\n<p>ByteDance, which was started in 2012 by&nbsp;Chinese entrepreneur Zhang Yiming, has raised billions of dollars from global investors including KKR &amp; Co., Sequoia Capital and General Atlantic. The company was valued at $180 billion in late 2020 after a fundraising round that included Fidelity Investments and some of its existing shareholders.</p>\n<p>ByteDance is considering listing in Hong Kong or New York, according to a person familiar with the matter. The company hasn’t mapped out any timeline for an initial public offering.</p>\n<p>Early this year one of ByteDance’s smaller domestic rivals, short-video app operator Kuaishou Technology,listed in Hong Kong&nbsp;after&nbsp;raising $5.4 billion. Kuaishou’s market capitalization was recently about $103 billion, and the company reported 2020 revenues equivalent to about $9.2 billion.</p>\n<p>In China, TikTok is widely viewed as China’s most successful mobile internet export. The wildly popular short-video app has been downloaded more than 240 million times in the U.S., with teenagers and adults alike posting video clips of themselves lip syncing, dancing and even dishing out financial advice.</p>\n<p>ByteDance’s revenues from TikTok come primarily from advertising. The company is also expanding beyond social media into areas such as gaming and e-commerce.</p>\n<p>While ByteDance didn’t break down its 1.9 billion monthly active users by app, its scale rivals that of&nbsp;Alphabet&nbsp;Inc.’s&nbsp;YouTube, which reiterated in April that it had more than 2 billion users that log into its site to watch videos. At the end of 2019, ByteDance had about 1.5 billion monthly active users.</p>\n<p>Last year, ByteDance was caught in the crosshairs of U.S.-China relations when former U.S. President&nbsp;Donald Trump’s administration singled out TikTok as a national-security threat and sought to ban the app. This month, President Biden&nbsp;revoked the ban, instead issuing an executive order mandating a broad review of apps controlled by foreign adversaries.</p>\n<p>At home, ByteDance has also run into some turbulence, as Chinese authorities seek to&nbsp;clamp down on the perceived excesses&nbsp;of its powerful technology sector. ByteDance has been called in by authorities this year for infractions including improper data use and problematic content.</p>\n<p>Last month, Mr. Zhang&nbsp;stepped down from his role&nbsp;as chief executive officer amid growing government scrutiny of the sector. Following the company’s management change, ByteDance launched a share buyback for employees, according to people familiar with the matter.</p>\n<p>In June, two of ByteDance’s apps were included on a list of 129 apps named by the Cyberspace Administration of China for excessive collection of personal information from users. The authority told all the apps to rectify the situation. But they were 46% higher in May than the pandemic-influenced month a year earlier, according to ACT Research.</p>\n<p>“U.S. GDP is forecast to hit nearly 7% in 2021, freight volumes are through the roof, and freight rates are just now starting to pull back from record highs,” ACT Vice President Steve Tam said.</p>\n<p><u><b>Struggling to keep up</b></u></p>\n<p>New truck production, beset by shortages of microchips that power critical vehicle functions, and through-the-roof commodity prices, is only beginning to recover but manufacturers are having difficulties hiring enough workers.</p>\n<p>“It is in the context of this strong market that new truck production is struggling to keep up with strong demand and limiting the used truck market from realizing its full potential,” Tam said. “By all indications, demand continues to outpace supply, and for that reason, it should come as no surprise that truck prices continue to increase.”</p>\n<p><u><b>Appreciation across the board</b></u></p>\n<p>J.D. Power reported that trucks in most segments appreciated in May with Class 8 auction pricing up 11.9% over April. Model year 2020 led the way with a 9.6% higher price than in April.</p>\n<p><u><b>Highest prices since Great Recession</b></u></p>\n<p>“We expect late-model pricing in June to clearly surpass the highest months in the post-Great Recession period,” Visser said. “In times like this it’s easier to justify the expense of a newer truck if it means better reliability and fuel economy and possibly a warranty.”</p>\n<p>Retail traffic pulled back as inventory was hard to come by. Dealers sold an average of 5.2 trucks per store in May, 0.4 fewer than in April. Year over year, the first five months of 2021 generated 1.6 more truck sales per dealership than during the same period of 2020.</p>\n<p>“We expect traffic to remain relatively solid in the summer,” Visser said.</p>\n<p>Looking ahead, he said, most trucks should see mild-to-moderate retail appreciation into the third quarter before moving lower later in the year as the supply chain rebalances and trucks become more available.</p>\n<p>Scant availability typical for a cyclical lower period for trade-ins is causing moderate swings in average monthly prices of Power’s benchmark group of 4- to 6-year-old trucks.</p>\n<p>“We have not seen any letup in actual pricing since the run-up began last year,” Visser said. “Compared to the first five months of 2020, this group is running 80.3% ahead. Power Valuation Services commercial vehicles senior analyst and product manager, told FreightWaves.“\n\n\n On the \n demandside, the \n freight markets are still red-hot,encouraging truckers to upgrade to newer iron.”\n\nPreliminary used Class 8 truck volumes by the same dealers dropped 14% in May compared to April. But they were 46% higher in May than the pandemic-influenced month a year earlier, according to ACT Research.\n“U.S. GDP is forecast to hit nearly 7% in 2021, freight volumes are through the roof, and freight rates are just now starting to pull back from record highs,” ACT Vice President Steve Tam said.\nStruggling to keep up\nNew truck production, beset by shortages of microchips that power critical vehicle functions, and through-the-roof commodity prices, is only beginning to recover but manufacturers are having difficulties hiring enough workers.\n“It is in the context of this strong market that new truck production is struggling to keep up with strong demand and limiting the used truck market from realizing its full potential,” Tam said. “By all indications, demand continues to outpace supply, and for that reason, it should come as no surprise that truck prices continue to increase.”\nAppreciation across the board\nJ.D. Power reported that trucks in most segments appreciated in May with Class 8 auction pricing up 11.9% over April.
