AMC stock has already appreciated more than 80% in the month, while gains for the past half year have surpassed 2,400%.
\n
The rally in AMC share price, however, has not been grounded on solid business fundamentals. Momentum alone has carried the stock to the moon. Today, Wall Street Memes debates whether meme mania can help to improve not only the stock price, but also AMC's financial position.
\n
Victim of the pandemic
\n
Meme stocks are described as such because their outsized short-term market gains are rarely consistent with the company's fundamentals. AMC certainly checks this box.
\n
The company and the entertainment industry in general have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, along with airlines and restaurants. Lockdown orders and stay-at-home habits punished AMC, a business that relies on consumers leaving the home and congregating indoors.
\n
Financial results were not spared. In the second quarter of 2020, AMC reported a 99% drop in its revenues as operations largely ceased. Adjusted EBITDA remained in negative territory even as recently as first quarter 2021: $289 million loss versus $3 million profit in the same quarter last year. Free cash flow tanked to negative $324 million in a single quarter.
\n
The obvious reason to justify such a drop in key financial metrics was the drastic decline in movie goers: down almost 90% year-over-year.
\n
Figure 2: AMC Key financial results in FY21 Q1.AMC Investor Relations
\n
Meme target
\n
Meme mania first reached AMC stock in January 2021. At the time, from one of the biggest short squeezes in history, shares jumped to $19, rising more than 900%. From mid-April to early June, the stock climbed another 500% or so, to peak at an incredible $72.
\n
The company’s underdog status, following the pandemic headwinds, is probably behind AMC being chosen as a target of “meme attack”. Also, the stock had come under hedge fund scrutiny, as short interest increased on the back of deteriorated fundamentals.
\n
Can meme mania save the day?
\n
An increase in share price, even if inconsistent with fundamentals, can be beneficial to a struggling company like AMC. A stronger stock helps with (1) acquisitions and other deals, (2) being less vulnerable to takeovers and, (3) issuing shares for cash to improve the balance sheet.
\n
Recently, AMCreporteda new stock offering, as the company raised $587 million worth of equity. According to AMC executives, the transaction would substantially strengthen the company's balance sheet and make it more capable of facing future challenges.
\n
Wall Street Memes’ take
\n
Thanks to meme mania, AMC may be able to clean up its financial statements more quickly, partially offsetting the impact of the pandemic. Given time, and with the reopening of the economy and the advance of vaccination campaigns, the entertainment industry should gradually recover on its own.
\n
In the short term, it remains to be seen whether trader sentiment will cool off. For now, AMC’s sentiment metric, based on volume of favorable AMC comments on the Reddit forum, remains healthy – just not as high as it was earlier in June (see chart below).
\n
Figure 3: AMC ticker sentiment on WallStreetBets.Swaggy Stocks
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
AMC Stock: Could Meme Mania Save The Company?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAMC Stock: Could Meme Mania Save The Company?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-30 14:27 GMT+8 thestreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Shares of the movie theater operator AMC (AMC) have been on fire since the beginning of June. For now, AMC’s sentiment metric, based on volume of favorable AMC comments on the Reddit forum, remains healthy – just not as high as it was earlier in June (see chart below).\nFigure 3: AMC ticker sentiment on WallStreetBets.Swaggy Stocks","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AMC":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":713,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":167769410,"gmtCreate":1624285127930,"gmtModify":1631891340208,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"GO AMC","listText":"GO AMC","text":"GO AMC","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/167769410","repostId":"1132601414","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1647,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":167078836,"gmtCreate":1624240978425,"gmtModify":1631891340211,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":" ありがとございました","listText":" ありがとございました","text":"ありがとございました","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/167078836","repostId":"1132687524","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1132687524","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1624238731,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1132687524?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-21 09:25","market":"us","language":"en","title":"American Airlines cancels hundreds of flights due to staffing crunch, maintenance issues","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1132687524","media":"cnbc","summary":"American Airlinessaid it canceled hundreds of flights this weekend due to staffing shortages, mainte","content":"
\n
American Airlinessaid it canceled hundreds of flights this weekend due to staffing shortages, maintenance and other issues, challenges facing the carrier as travel demand surges toward pre-pandemic ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"cnbc_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; About half of those were because of unavailable flight crews, showed a company list, which was viewed by CNBC. On Saturday, about 4%, or 123 flights, were canceled, the site showed.\nAmerican said it is trimming its schedule by about 1% through mid-July to help ease some of the disruptions, some of which it said resulted from bad weather at its Charlotte and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport hubs during the first half of June.\n\"The bad weather, combined with the labor shortages some of our vendors are contending with and the incredibly quick ramp up of customer demand, has led us to build in additional resilience and certainty to our operation by adjusting a fraction of our scheduled flying through mid-July,\" said American Airlines spokeswoman Sarah Jantz in a statement. \"We made targeted changes with the goal of impacting the fewest number of customers by adjusting flights in markets where we have multiple options for re-accommodation.\"\nBad weather has impacted flight crews' ability to get to assigned flights and bad weather can mean that crews can fall outside of the hours they are federally allowed to work, the spokeswoman said.\nDennis Tajer, spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, which represents American's roughly 15,000 pilots, said the company should offer more overtime in advance to encourage staff to fill in as well as more flexibility in pilots' schedules to cover staffing shortages.\n\"They're trying to put a Band-Aid on something that needs stitches,\" said Tajer, who is also a Boeing 737 captain.\nAmerican is also racing to train all of the pilots it furloughed in between two federal aid packages that prohibited layoffs as well as its aviators who are due for periodic recurrent training. Jantz said American is on track to finish training furloughed pilots by the end of this month and added the company is offering overtime because of its operational issues.\nDelta Air Linescanceled more than 300 flights last Thanksgiving weekend and scores of others during Christmas during apilot shortage.\nThe weekend's disruptions, reported earlier by the View from the Wing airline blog, come just as carriers are trying to capture a surge in travel demand and stem record losses. American said in a filing earlier this month that it expects its second-quarter capacity to be down 20% to 25% from 2019, whileUnited Airlinessaid it expects its capacity to be down about 46% andDeltaforecast a 32% decline versus 2019. That's understandable, with several of them del","content":"
Meme stocks have been all the rage so far this year. That's understandable, with several of them delivering triple-digit and even four-digit percentage gains.
\n
However, what goes up can come down. Analysts don't expect the online frenzy fueling the ginormous jumps for some of the most popular stocks will be sustainable. Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.
\n
AMC Entertainment
\n
AMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.
\n
The consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.
\n
But isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.
\n
However, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
\n
Clover Health Investments
\n
Only a few days ago, it looked like Clover Health Investments(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.
\n
Since the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.
\n
Clover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Still, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.
\n
Sundial Growers
\n
At one point earlier this year, Sundial Growers(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.
\n
Analysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.
\n
There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. That's understandable, with several of them delivering triple-digit and even four-digit percentage gains.\nHowever, what goes up can come down. Analysts don't expect the online frenzy fueling the ginormous jumps for some of the most popular stocks will be sustainable. Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.\nAMC Entertainment\nAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.\nThe consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.\nBut isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.\nHowever, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.\nClover Health Investments\nOnly a few days ago, it looked like Clover Health Investments(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.\nSince the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.\nClover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.\nStill, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.\nSundial Growers\nAt one point earlier this year, Sundial Growers(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.\nAnalysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.\nThere certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.\nSundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.\nHowever, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. The company can't afford any additional dilution without having to resort to desperate measures to keep its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AMC":0.9,"CLOV":0.9,"SNDL":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":958,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":165689164,"gmtCreate":1624125809558,"gmtModify":1631892522370,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"ありがとございました","listText":"ありがとございました","text":"ありがとございました","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/165689164","repostId":"1199331995","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":169,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":165689979,"gmtCreate":1624125787891,"gmtModify":1631892522374,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"ありがとございました","listText":"ありがとございました","text":"ありがとございました","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/165689979","repostId":"1161408410","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":299,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":165680468,"gmtCreate":1624125766154,"gmtModify":1631892522378,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"ありがとございました","listText":"ありがとございました","text":"ありがとございました","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/165680468","repostId":"1113942445","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":163,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":166602581,"gmtCreate":1624004638843,"gmtModify":1631892522382,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a short positions on the stock.
\n
Between May 24 and June 2, AMC’s stock skyrocketed 496% to $72.62 before falling 45% to $39.71 where it found a bottom. The stock has since made a run back up and on Monday gapped up just over 4%. The gap left below didn’t scare off traders who came in and immediately purchased shares and options contracts of AMC, which caused the stock to run north even further.
\n
Bullish AMC options are betting AMC is in for an even larger squeeze and purchased hundreds of call contracts totally well over $8.68 million.
\n
Why It’s Important:When a sweep order occurs, it indicates the trader wanted to get into a position quickly and is anticipating an imminent large move in stock price. A sweeper pays market price for the call option instead of placing a bid, which sweeps the order book of multiple exchanges to fill the order immediately.
\n
These types of call option orders are usually made by institutions, and retail investors can find watching for sweepers useful because it indicates “smart money” has entered into a position.
\n
The AMC Entertainment Option Trades:Below is a look at the notable options alerts, courtesy ofBenzinga Pro:
\n
\n
At 10:25 a.m., Monday a trader executed a call sweep near the ask of 200 AMC Entertainment options with a strike price of $145 expiring on July 16. The stock has since made a run back up and on Monday gapped up just over 4%. The gap left below didn’t scare off traders who came in and immediately purchased shares and options contracts of AMC, which caused the stock to run north even further.\nBullish AMC options are betting AMC is in for an even larger squeeze and purchased hundreds of call contracts totally well over $8.68 million.\nWhy It’s Important:When a sweep order occurs, it indicates the trader wanted to get into a position quickly and is anticipating an imminent large move in stock price. A sweeper pays market price for the call option instead of placing a bid, which sweeps the order book of multiple exchanges to fill the order immediately.\nThese types of call option orders are usually made by institutions, and retail investors can find watching for sweepers useful because it indicates “smart money” has entered into a position.\nThe AMC Entertainment Option Trades:Below is a look at the notable options alerts, courtesy ofBenzinga Pro:\n\nAt 10:25 a.m., Monday a trader executed a call sweep near the ask of 200 AMC Entertainment options with a strike price of $145 expiring on July 16. So I think we have to watch this very carefully,” Mobius told CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe.\n“We’re in a very uncertain time, that’s for sure,” he added.\nEven without concerns over central banks there have been instances of extreme market volatility since the start of the year, including the retail trading frenzy that hit U.S. stock markets in spring, driven largely by Reddit, to wild moves in the crypto market, particularly bitcoin. The price of the cryptocurrency fell about 10% Tuesday to around $32,000 and is down 50% from its April all-time high.\nMobius believed that risk-taking behavior among investors and market volatility was down to confusion.\n“A lot of people have cash in hand that they want to do something with, and secondly, a lot of people are confused. The fact that they’ve seen bitcoin, which they had so much faith in, go down the way it’s gone down confuses people,” he said.\n“So you have a funny situation with a lot of money in their pocket and lots of confusion and disorientation, so I think that’s what driving a lot of these crazy moves in the market.”\nNonetheless, Mobius believed markets could still travel higher if central banks don’t pull the plug on asset purchase programs too soon.\n“With lots of money sloshing about there’s no reason why the market can’t go higher, not only the U.S. market but the MSCI and EM (emerging market) market has gone up as well in fact more than the S&P 500. You can see a continuation unless there’s a big pullback in money supply and that’s why we have to watch the behavior of central banks around the world, particularly the Fed.”\nA recipe for disaster?\nMobius noted how some emerging markets had performed well thanks to the increased global money supply and pointed out how some currencies, such as the Chinese renminbi and Brazilian real, had performed particularly well over the last year but that the outlook was also unpredictable among currencies too.\n“You’re going to see a lot of these unusual moves (continue)” he noted, with “some of them justifiable but a lot of it not justifiable and not logical really,” making for a very uncertain outlook.\n“So at the end of the day we’re in a very, very uncertain situation ... and of course that means a recipe for disaster for some people who are investing,” he noted.\nThe next pointer for global markets comes on Thursday with the latest reading of the U.S. inflation rate due which could lead the Federal Reserve to taper asset purchases sooner rather than later.\nRead more: The Fed is in early stages of a campaign to prepare markets for tapering its asset purchases\nThe consumer price index for May is set to be released Thursday. Economists are expecting the CPI to rise 4.7% from a year earlier, according to Dow Jones. In April, the CPI increased 4.2% on an annual basis, the fastest rise since 2008.\nThe Fed has previously contended that higher price pressures are just temporary as the economy continues to rebound from the pandemic-induced recession.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"SPY":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":196,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":180309186,"gmtCreate":1623175080345,"gmtModify":1631892522399,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AMC Entertainment(AMC)$$Clover Health Corp(CLOV)$CLOV is a distraction for AMC & GME.
A whole lot has changed in the past few months, however, and today GME stock is at the center of an ongoing debate.
\n
Source: quietbits / Shutterstock.com
\n
On one side of the debate is the grassroots movement of traders who want to “stick it to the man.” And by “the man,” I mean the well-heeled short sellers who punished amateur long-side traders for years.
\n
But then, there’s another group of commentators who see things quite differently. Some folks view the GME stock price as divorced from reality as GameStop isn’t necessarily a thriving business.
\n
As you can see, there’s a lot to unpack here. Add into the mix some recent undercurrents suggesting that another short squeeze might be in the works, and you’ve got a market phenomenon that simply cannot be ignored.
\n
A Closer Look at GME Stock
\n
During the summer of 2020, the world was still reeling from the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, GME stock was floundering below the $5 level.
\n
Like a plane starting to take off, the share price ascended throughout the remainder of the year. By Dec. 31, it had reached $18, which already represented a substantial gain.
\n
Yet, that was a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to what was coming. Fueled by Reddit and Robinhood traders, GME stock rocketed to an astounding 52-week high of $483 on Jan. 27, 2021.
\n
I often say that price chasers get punished. Indeed, that’s precisely what happened next as GameStop shares crashed to the $40 area on Feb. 19.
\n
There’s been some recovery since that time. On May 21, the GME stock price settled at $176.79.
\n
At the same time, GameStop’s trailing 12-month earnings per share was -$3.31.
\n
This makes it difficult for me to recommend the stock, as negative earnings and a massive share-price run-up isn’t necessarily an auspicious combination.
\n
Tracking Social Sentiment
\n
“There’s aclear desire for a short squeezeeither today or very soon.” This is a recent quote fromHypeEquityfounder Travis Rehl, in reference to GME stock and/or meme stocks generally.
\n
HypeEquity is a platform which compiles social-media activity concerning individual stocks. The platform uses that data to track what HypeEquity calls “social sentiment analysis.”
\n
There’s a qualitative aspect to the data, as well as a quantitative one.
\n
The quantitative metric involves the mentions of a particular company on social media. And apparently, on May 18, mentions of GameStop soared by more than 1,400% by volume.
\n
Then you’ve got the quantitative data, which involves the comments themselves.
\n
I suspect that it’s more difficult to measure sentiment based on comments, as social media participants are sometimes sarcastic and say the opposite of what they mean.
\n
Only One Way This Can Go
\n
Still, we can attempt to analyze the data as long as we take it with a grain of salt.
\n
Reportedly, data from HypeEquity showed that around 8% of comments on GME stock andAMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) stock included the word “squeeze.”
\n
That’s a fairly large portion of the comments. A whole lot has changed in the past few months, however, and today GME stock is at the center of an ongoing debate.\nSource: quietbits / Shutterstock.com\nOn one side of the debate is the grassroots movement of traders who want to “stick it to the man.” And by “the man,” I mean the well-heeled short sellers who punished amateur long-side traders for years.\nBut then, there’s another group of commentators who see things quite differently. Some folks view the GME stock price as divorced from reality as GameStop isn’t necessarily a thriving business.\nAs you can see, there’s a lot to unpack here. Add into the mix some recent undercurrents suggesting that another short squeeze might be in the works, and you’ve got a market phenomenon that simply cannot be ignored.\nA Closer Look at GME Stock\nDuring the summer of 2020, the world was still reeling from the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, GME stock was floundering below the $5 level.\nLike a plane starting to take off, the share price ascended throughout the remainder of the year. By Dec. 31, it had reached $18, which already represented a substantial gain.\nYet, that was a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to what was coming. Fueled by Reddit and Robinhood traders, GME stock rocketed to an astounding 52-week high of $483 on Jan. 27, 2021.\nI often say that price chasers get punished. Indeed, that’s precisely what happened next as GameStop shares crashed to the $40 area on Feb. 19.\nThere’s been some recovery since that time. On May 21, the GME stock price settled at $176.79.\nAt the same time, GameStop’s trailing 12-month earnings per share was -$3.31.\nThis makes it difficult for me to recommend the stock, as negative earnings and a massive share-price run-up isn’t necessarily an auspicious combination.\nTracking Social Sentiment\n“There’s aclear desire for a short squeezeeither today or very soon.” This is a recent quote fromHypeEquityfounder Travis Rehl, in reference to GME stock and/or meme stocks generally.\nHypeEquity is a platform which compiles social-media activity concerning individual stocks. The platform uses that data to track what HypeEquity calls “social sentiment analysis.”\nThere’s a qualitative aspect to the data, as well as a quantitative one.\nThe quantitative metric involves the mentions of a particular company on social media. And apparently, on May 18, mentions of GameStop soared by more than 1,400% by volume.\nThen you’ve got the quantitative data, which involves the comments themselves.\nI suspect that it’s more difficult to measure sentiment based on comments, as social media participants are sometimes sarcastic and say the opposite of what they mean.\nOnly One Way This Can Go\nStill, we can attempt to analyze the data as long as we take it with a grain of salt.\nReportedly, data from HypeEquity showed that around 8% of comments on GME stock andAMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) stock included the word “squeeze.”\nThat’s a fairly large portion of the comments. And, while AMC stock already had a very recent price surge, “GameStonk” shares haven’t made a huge move yet.\nFor all we know, the Reddit traders might be circling the wagons and getting ready for something of epic proportions.\nOne example of a Reddit posting struck me as overenthusiastic, but not atypical.\n“Remember, their portfolio full of derivatives is nothing against the power of HODLING the stock,” Mexicanred1 declared on subreddit r/Superstonk.\n“There’s only one way this can go… Just up,” Mexicanred1 added.\nThe Bottom Line\nIt’s hard to form any solid conclusions here. Another GME stock short squeeze might be just around the corner, or it might not.\nRather than play a guessing game, it’s probably best just to sit on the sidelines and watch the events – or non-events, as the case may be – play out.\nOn the date of publication, David Moadel did not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article. The opinions expressed in this article are those of the writer, subject to the InvestorPlace.comPublishing Guidelines.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"GME":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":264,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":107642349,"gmtCreate":1620487606181,"gmtModify":1634198443888,"author":{"id":"3576897924380223","authorId":"3576897924380223","name":"wataru","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/43453debe7e355c59ebfd4bdf7caa788","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576897924380223","authorIdStr":"3576897924380223"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"To the moon 🚀🚀🚀","listText":"To the moon 🚀🚀🚀","text":"To the moon 🚀🚀🚀","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/107642349","repostId":"1160802774","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1160802774","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1620442206,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1160802774?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-05-08 10:50","market":"other","language":"en","title":"Dogecoin price’s ‘make-or-break’ moment looms with Elon Musk set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1160802774","media":"Marketwatch","summary":"Nikki Beesetti started investing in crypto back in 2017 and paid off her final semester at Purdue Un","content":"
Nikki Beesetti started investing in crypto back in 2017 and paid off her final semester at Purdue University with proceeds from the sale of a single bitcoin that she bought on a whim, which had surged to nearly $20,000.

Now, the product manager for a startup in New York is dabbling in dogecoin ,and sees this weekend as a possible make-or-break moment for the parody coin that has seen a stratospheric, nearly 13,000% rise in 2021.

“This Saturday is going to be a total make-or-break for dogecoin,” Beesetti told MarketWatch in a phone interview.

“If he can really get the messaging right, dogecoin can really take off…or it’s going to crash to wherever it’s going to crash to,” she said.

The 25-year-old investor is one of a number of relatively young traders who are piling into speculative altcoins like dogecoin as the so-called joke asset mints millionaires and draws some concerns about a bubble forming in the nascent crypto complex.

Musk will host NBC’s late-night live television comedy sketch show, “Saturday Night Live,” this weekend and his coming appearance has already drawn cheers and jeers.

Musk has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for dogecoin and crypto broadly. So I think we have to watch this very carefully,” Mobius told CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe.\n“We’re in a very uncertain time, that’s for sure,” he added.\nEven without concerns over central banks there have been instances of extreme market volatility since the start of the year, including the retail trading frenzy that hit U.S. stock markets in spring, driven largely by Reddit, to wild moves in the crypto market, particularly bitcoin.The price of the cryptocurrency fell about 10% Tuesday to around $32,000 and is down 50% from its April all-time high.\nMobius believed that risk-taking behavior among investors and market volatility was down to confusion.\n“A lot of people have cash in hand that they want to do something with, and secondly, a lot of people are confused. The fact that they’ve seen bitcoin, which they had so much faith in, go down the way it’s gone down confuses people,” he said.\n“So you have a funny situation with a lot of money in their pocket and lots of confusion and disorientation, so I think that’s what driving a lot of these crazy moves in the market.”\nNonetheless, Mobius believed markets could still travel higher if central banks don’t pull the plug on asset purchase programs too soon.\n“With lots of money sloshing about there’s no reason why the market can’t go higher, not only the U.S. market but the MSCI and EM (emerging market) market has gone up as well in fact more than the S&P 500. You can see a continuation unless there’s a big pullback in money supply and that’s why we have to watch the behavior of central banks around the world, particularly the Fed.”\nA recipe for disaster?\nMobius noted how some emerging markets had performed well thanks to the increased global money supply and pointed out how some currencies, such as the Chinese renminbi and Brazilian real, had performed particularly well over the last year but that the outlook was also unpredictable among currencies too.\n“You’re going to see a lot of these unusual moves (continue)” he noted, with “some of them justifiable but a lot of it not justifiable and not logical really,” making for a very uncertain outlook.\n“So at the end of the day we’re in a very, very uncertain situation ... and of course that means a recipe for disaster for some people who are investing,” he noted.\nThe next pointer for global markets comes on Thursday with the latest reading of the U.S. inflation rate due which could lead the Federal Reserve to taper asset purchases sooner rather than later.\nRead more: The Fed is in early stages of a campaign to prepare markets for tapering its asset purchases\nThe consumer price index for May is set to be released Thursday. Economists are expecting the CPI to rise 4.7% from a year earlier, according to Dow Jones.In April, the CPI increased 4.2% on an annual basis, the fastest rise since 2008.\nThe Fed has previously contended that higher price pressures are just temporary as the economy continues to rebound from the pandemic-induced recession.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"SPY":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":196,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
