The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.
\n
Here's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:
\n\n
\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
You can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc. and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.
\n
For now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.
\n
One thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.
\n
Among those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:
\n
For Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.
\n
Volkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.
\n
For Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.
\n
Valuation to earnings estimates
\n
For companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.
\n
A high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.
\n
Then again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.
\n
Normally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. This isn't available for all the companies listed here, so we're using consensus estimates for net income for calendar 2022.
\n
First, here are P/E ratios based on current market caps and consensus 2022 estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. The table includes the annual estimates going out to 2025, and also a P/E based on current market caps and the 2025 estimates:
\n\n
Nio is expected to become profitable in 2023. Looking out to 2024, its forward P/E is lower than that of Tesla. But investors are bullish on the Chinese electric-vehicle maker's prospects.\nA Nio store in downtown Shanghai. (Getty Images)\nChinese electric-vehicle maker Nio Inc., which sells no cars in the U.S., has a market capitalization of $60.2 billion. By that measure, it is larger than Ford Motor Co., which was founded in 1903.\nThat might make sense to you as an investor -- after all, Nio is an innovative company that sells only electric vehicles. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.\nSo where does Nio $(NIO)$, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.\nDoubling car production\nFor the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.\nHere's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc. and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.\nFor now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.\nOne thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. When the sports-focused streaming company reported its first-quarter earnings beat, it raised guidance for the second quarter and full fiscal year.
\n
The company raised its second-quarterguidanceto $120 million to $122 million, ahead of the consensus estimate of $98.4 million. FuboTV sees subscribers for the year coming in between $830,000 and $850,000, which would represent a 53% year-over-year growth at the midpoint.
\n
Traders and investors may get an update on whether fuboTV is still on schedule to launch itssports bettingapp by the end of fiscal 2021. In March, the company said it plans to launch free-to-play games in the third quarter followed by sports betting in the fourth quarter.
\n
The FuboTV Chart:FuboTV is trading down about 55% from its Dec. 22, 2020 high of $62.29. When the sports-focused streaming company reported its first-quarter earnings beat, it raised guidance for the second quarter and full fiscal year.\nThe company raised its second-quarterguidanceto $120 million to $122 million, ahead of the consensus estimate of $98.4 million. FuboTV sees subscribers for the year coming in between $830,000 and $850,000, which would represent a 53% year-over-year growth at the midpoint.\nTraders and investors may get an update on whether fuboTV is still on schedule to launch itssports bettingapp by the end of fiscal 2021. In March, the company said it plans to launch free-to-play games in the third quarter followed by sports betting in the fourth quarter.\nThe FuboTV Chart:FuboTV is trading down about 55% from its Dec. 22, 2020 high of $62.29. The stock has failed to gain any traction for a large move back toward the $62 level and fuboTV’s daily trading range has decreased due to low volume.\nSince making the new high, fuboTV has settled into a large falling wedge pattern with a distinct upper descending trendline. The stock has attempted to break up from the trendline on five separate occasions including on Monday and failed. Monday’s volume was high, however, indicating continued momentum may be in the cards for Tuesday.\nOn Monday, FuboTV printed a bullish Marubozu candlestick with a small upper wick at the descending trendline, which indicates fuboTV may be ready to make a break north.\nFuboTV is trading above the eight-day and 21-day exponential moving averages (EMAs) but the eight-day EMA is trending below the 21-day, which indicates bullish indecision. The stock is trading slightly below the 200-day simple moving average (SMA), which indicates overall sentiment is bearish.\nOn Monday, fuboTV tried to regain the 200-day SMA as support but rejected and wicked from it. The 200-day aligns with the upper descending trendline resistance which makes the area harder to break through.\n\nBulls want big bullish volume to come in and drive fuboTV up through the top of the following channel and for the stock to close the day over the 200-day SMA. If fuboTV’s stock can clear the $28.45 level, it has room to move up toward $31.53.\nBears want to see the stock continue to reject its upper resistances and for bearish volume to come in and drive fuboTV down toward the $26 level. If fuboTV’s stock was unable to hold the level as support, it could fall toward the $22.37 mark before potentially bouncing.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":902,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":892971394,"gmtCreate":1628637307118,"gmtModify":1631888147270,"author":{"id":"3579089526246226","authorId":"3579089526246226","name":"Kuxz2021","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08d4c40e1cadc13a35bee15bdaadd052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579089526246226","authorIdStr":"3579089526246226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Where are you going? Analysts had forecast earnings per share of $0.77 on $7.3 billion in revenue.
\n
Despite beating consensus revenue and earnings targets, Starbucks stock is down 3%, to $122.30.
\n
Driven by an 84% increase in same-store sales in America, the global coffee giant reported an overall increase in comparable-store sales of 73% relative to the third quarter last year. Indeed, brand loyalty remains strong, especially in the U.S. where 90-day active members of the Starbucks Rewards loyalty program increased 48% year-over-year and now account for 51% of all spending in U.S. stores–up 8% from pre-pandemic levels.
\n
In a statement, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson told investors “Starbucks delivered record performance in the third quarter, demonstrating powerful momentum beyond recovery. Our ability to move with speed and agility and to be out in front of shifting customer behaviors has helped further differentiate Starbucks, positioning us well for this moment.”
\n
The strong results have prompted management to raise the company’s 2021 earnings per share outlook from $2.90-$3.00 to $3.20-$3.25.
\n
During the earnings call, analysts were keen to hear about management’s outlook on China, as they expressed concerns about consumer pushback against U.S. brands in the region. However, Johnson was quick to dispel the concerns, commenting that there hasn’t been a geopolitical event in China that has impacted them in the past couple of years, and he doesn’t foresee that happening as long as they continue taking care of their partners and customers.
\n
While fears about rising labor costs did not materialize since operating margins were higher than last quarter and the corresponding period last year, analysts were expecting better performance in international markets. Cowen analyst, Andrew Charles, stated that Starbucks’s 41% change in comparable-store sales relative to the same period last year fell short of the 62% growth he anticipated to see. Nonetheless, the impressive numbers from the U.S. were enough for Charles to raise his price target from $126 to $135. Likewise, Stifel analyst Chris O’Cull had expected international comparable store sales to increase 66%. O’Cull further noted that management offered guidance, which implied roughly flat two-year international comparable store sales.
\n
The question to investors remains whether strong U.S. growth is enough to keep on offsetting slower international growth and push the stock higher.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Starbucks Earnings Crushed Expectations. O’Cull further noted that management offered guidance, which implied roughly flat two-year international comparable store sales.\nThe question to investors remains whether strong U.S. growth is enough to keep on offsetting slower international growth and push the stock higher.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":575,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":135885166,"gmtCreate":1622157695655,"gmtModify":1634183410632,"author":{"id":"3579089526246226","authorId":"3579089526246226","name":"Kuxz2021","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08d4c40e1cadc13a35bee15bdaadd052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579089526246226","authorIdStr":"3579089526246226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like & comment if you want to be a millionaire! It is up about 60 per cent this year alone as demand for electric vehicles increases, countries work to reduce carbon emissions and costs tumble.\nCATL trades at more than 100 times estimated earnings, compared with about 13 times for its competitor Panasonic.\nIn addition to Tesla, CATL counts BMW and Volkswagen among its customers.\nIn an interview last year, Dr Zeng said he and Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk text about technology, Covid-19 and Mr Musk's main interest: cheaper batteries and cars.\nDr Zeng, who earned his doctorate in condensed matter physics from the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing, is not the only billionaire who is benefiting from the surge in CATL's stock. Mr Huang Shilin, a vice-chairman of the company, is worth more than US$21 billion, while Mr Li Ping, who is also a vice-chairman, has a fortune worth US$8.5 billion.\nAs Dr Zeng's star rises, Mr Ma's has been on the wane. The value of Mr Ma's fintech arm Ant Group has plummeted since the former English teacher openly pushed back against Beijing, prompting the Chinese authorities to quash the company's plans for a huge initial public offering. Mr Ma, 56, has all but dropped from public view, and has lost US$2.5 billion in wealth this year.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":396,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":136864291,"gmtCreate":1622006999713,"gmtModify":1634184711468,"author":{"id":"3579089526246226","authorId":"3579089526246226","name":"Kuxz2021","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08d4c40e1cadc13a35bee15bdaadd052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579089526246226","authorIdStr":"3579089526246226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment if you like Nvidia","listText":"Like and comment if you like Nvidia","text":"Like and comment if you like Nvidia","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/136864291","repostId":"1106657602","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":746,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3559364582690092","authorId":"3559364582690092","name":"bilibili必涨","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fccd93c15c70c5222ed0849b9e27de90","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3559364582690092","authorIdStr":"3559364582690092"},"content":"nvidia 涨涨涨","text":"nvidia 涨涨涨","html":"nvidia 涨涨涨"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":155001718,"gmtCreate":1625361568534,"gmtModify":1633941321678,"author":{"id":"3579089526246226","authorId":"3579089526246226","name":"Kuxz2021","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08d4c40e1cadc13a35bee15bdaadd052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579089526246226","authorIdStr":"3579089526246226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"But to support for a good vacation stay [Grin] ","listText":"But to support for a good vacation stay [Grin] ","text":"But to support for a good vacation stay [Grin]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/155001718","repostId":"1130764181","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":518,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":803185972,"gmtCreate":1627428216296,"gmtModify":1633765189046,"author":{"id":"3579089526246226","authorId":"3579089526246226","name":"Kuxz2021","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08d4c40e1cadc13a35bee15bdaadd052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579089526246226","authorIdStr":"3579089526246226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"You can do better Apple! Bitcoin is currently trading around $39,000 following a rollercoaster month of trading after itsprice drop almost a month ago.\nCoinbase’s revenue is largely driven by trading fees, 81% of which come from retail trading and 5% from institutional trading, according to Canaccord. It has the highest trading fees across crypto exchanges, the bank found.\nStill, Canaccord said it’s confident Coinbase’s business will ultimately expand beyond retail trading and into emerging opportunities for the blockchain – which could include supporting new protocols beyond bitcoin and Ethereum, decentralized finance and cloud solutions – and that crypto exchange will be a “super on-ramp” into that new world.\nCanaccord set its one-year price target on the stock at $285, which is 12 times its 2022 enterprise value-to-sales estimate.Enterprise value-to-salesis a ratio that measures a firm’s value versus its sales revenue.\n“Market share and technology leaders that leverage their positions to drive innovation via creating new customer behaviors present some of most compelling, long-term value propositions in the market,” the bank said. “Although we will see ongoing volatility, we don’t think that comparing the longer-term potential of the blockchain and digital assets to what we have seen in ecommerce is off the mark.”\nThe analysts noted that Coinbase shares are likely to see headwinds in the short term, based on crypto spot price volatility so far in June.\n“If we are in a bitcoin holding pattern here for a while, COIN could likely see sequentially weaker financial performance,” they said.\nStill, “we remain biased to the upside on bitcoin medium term and believe that resilience and elegance in the blockchain provide a great foundation for the entirety of digital assets from here,” the analysts wrote.\nCanaccord’s analysts highlighted bitcoin’s increasingly vertical supply curve – that is, the fact that quantities are limited, regardless of how much investors are willing to pay – as well as institutional interest in digital assets, comparative valuation to other stores of value, and “importantly what we view as an inevitable U.S. ETF.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":250,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":895380135,"gmtCreate":1628724311927,"gmtModify":1631888147239,"author":{"id":"3579089526246226","authorId":"3579089526246226","name":"Kuxz2021","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/08d4c40e1cadc13a35bee15bdaadd052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579089526246226","authorIdStr":"3579089526246226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Cheaper The two countries are also furthest along in vaccinating their populations. As of this writing, China has administered over 1.54 billion doses, and the U.S. has administered 342 million -- enough to fully vaccinate 55% and 53.4% of their populations, respectively.
\n
The higher vaccination rates are allowing for faster reopening of economies in the two markets. In its most recent quarter, Starbucks reported U.S. sales eclipsed levels from before the pandemic. Meanwhile, sales in China were 90% recovered. Therefore, a resurgence in COVID-19 cases caused by the delta variant is less likely to cause economic lockdowns in those two countries.
\n
Even if a renewal of lockdowns is far less likely, the resurgence in cases could slow down reopening. Millions of students are expected to return to campus in the fall semester. And businesses are preparing to bring back employees to offices at least part-time in the second half of the year. The increase in infections could delay both.
\n
What this could mean for investors
\n
Analysts on Wall Street expect Starbucks to report revenue of $7.24 billion and earnings per share of $0.77 in its third quarter. If it meets those expectations, it would lift year-to-date revenue to $20.64 billion after the company reported revenue of $6.7 billion each in the first and second quarter.
\n
Interestingly, management has informed investors to expect overall revenue in the range of $28.5 billion to $29.3 billion for fiscal 2021. And considering that historically, Starbucks generates more revenue in the final quarter of the year compared to the first three, it would be on pace for reaching the yearly target.
\n
Still, management might provide an update on the fourth quarter. The delta variant is at least slowing the pace of economic reopenings. For instance, several major corporations have delayed a return to offices, and some countries have extended or instituted travel restrictions. Those developments could have hampered Starbucks' expectations for the fourth quarter.
\n
The stock price is up 16.9% in 2021 and 11.5% in the last month alone. It does not appear that investors are pricing in any possibility of negative news coming out of Starbucks' earnings report.
