It's just designer streetwear right now, and it's not cheap. T-shirts range in price from $30 to $45. Hypland's Yasuke hoodie is going to set you back a beefy $82, or nearly half a year of a Netflix subscription.</p>\n<p>However, you may want to think twice before you dismiss the leading premium video service's chances here. There are some good reasons to bet on Netflix's latest move. Netflix is just getting started</b></p>\n<p>This is obviously just the opening act of Netflix.shop. You can get third-party -- admittedly unlicensed -- shirts for a lot less elsewhere. It will be harder to duplicate the<i>Yasuke</i>and<i>Eden</i>action figures that Netflix is promising will roll out later this month.</p>\n<p>Limited-edition apparel and decor inspired by<i>Lupin</i>-- with the second season just dropping into your Netflix queue -- will hit the digital storefront this month. Last week's launch also teased upcoming exclusive<i>Stranger Things</i>and<i>The Witcher</i>product lines. Reports also have Netflix working on a<i>Bridgerton</i>clothing line alongside live events. And Fans of<i>La Casa de Papel</i>-- aka<i>Money Heist</i>-- should be on the lookout for proprietary merch.</p>\n<p>Don't judge Netflix's new foray into the e-tail of physical merch based on what you see on today's landing page. The store will get bigger, and you'll get there once they roll around to paddling a new revenue stream based on one of your favorite shows.</p>\n<p><b>2. Never underestimate the Netflix audience</b></p>\n<p>It's not smart to bet against Netflix. It doesn't make a move unless it has thoroughly thought things through. How many times were we asking Netflix to rent video games by mail during its red envelope days? How many analysts have wondered about the money that Netflix could rake in it if sold ads on top of its streams in this era of rising connected-TV rates?</p>\n<p>Netflix is way smarter than me. It may also be smarter than you when it comes to how it runs its business. Its technology was reportedly used to hunt down Osama bin Laden in 2011, but it was also used by ICE in recent years to locate and deport undocumented immigrants.</p>\n<p>C3.ai initially only served energy companies before expanding into other markets. Unlike Palantir, which gathers data from external and internal sources, C3.ai mainly uses a company's internal operations.</p>\n<p>C3.ai's algorithms can schedule maintenance routines, detect fraud, optimize inventories, and improve CRM (customer relationship management) systems. In short, it's a lot less controversial bet than Palantir.</p>\n<p><b>How fast is Palantir growing?</b></p>\n<p>Palantir's revenue increased 47% to $1.1 billion&nbsp;in 2020. Its government revenue rose 77% as its commercial revenue grew 22%.</p>\n<p>It expanded its government contracts with the FDA, U.S. Army, and&nbsp;U.S. Air Force, and its commercial business attracted big customers including&nbsp;<b>Rio Tinto</b>,<b>PG&amp;E</b>, and&nbsp;<b>BP</b>. Its adjusted gross and operating margins expanded, but it still posted a net loss of $1.2 billion -- compared to a loss of $580 million in 2019.</p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2021, Palantir's revenue rose 49% year-over-year to $341 million, with 76% growth in its government business and 19% growth in its commercial business. Its adjusted gross and operating margins expanded again, but its net loss again widened, from $54.3 million to $123.5 million. On the bright side, its&nbsp;adjusted EBITDA&nbsp;turned positive with a profit of $119.8 million -- but that excludes its stock-based compensation and a lot of \"one time\" expenses.</p>\n<p>Wall Street expects Palantir's revenue to rise 35% this year, while the company expects its annual revenue to increase more than 30% every year through 2025. That confident outlook indicates a belief that its government business will remain stable as it gradually gains more commercial customers, but the company could remain steeped in controversy about data-gathering and deeply unprofitable for years to come.</p>\n<p><b>How fast is C3.ai growing?</b></p>\n<p>C3.ai's revenue rose 17% to $183.2 million in&nbsp;fiscal 2021, which ended in April. That marked a significant slowdown from its 71% growth in 2020, mainly due to pandemic-related disruptions of the energy and industrial sectors.</p>\n<p>Its average contract value also decreased from $12.1 million in 2020 to $7.2 million in 2021, even as it initiated new enterprise AI projects with big customers like&nbsp;<b>3M</b>,<b>Consolidated Edison</b>,<b>Shell</b>, and the New York Power Authority. But its total number of customers rose 82% to 89 at the end of the year, which indicates its business could recover quickly after the pandemic ends. It expects its revenue to increase 33% to 35% in the current fiscal year.</p>\n<p>C3.ai's adjusted gross margin stayed flat in fiscal 2021 as its operating margin remained in the red, but its net loss narrowed year-over-year from $69.4 million to $55.7 million. That compares to $554 million forthe January 2021 fiscal year.\nSnowflake (ticker: SNOW) should still be growing 30% at the top-line at that point, according to chief financial officer Mike Scarpelli, while generating 10% operating margins and free cash flow margins of 15% or better. He also said the company now sees a total addressable market of $90 billion, an expansion of more than 10% from the $81 billion estimated market size cited during its IPO roadshow in 2020.\nThe long-term growth goals help frame the huge opportunity that Snowflake has ahead, but did nothing to change the fundamental debate about the stock: Does the impressive growth rate—120% in product revenue in the latest year— justify the massive valuation? In afternoon trading Friday, shares were off 4.4%, to $237.84.\nCanaccord Genuity analyst David Hynes notes that if Snowflake hits its $10 billion target, it would be the fastest that a software company has reached that size. It’s more ambiguous. If the numbers say anything, maybe it’s that “sell in May and go away” is only half right. Since 1900, someone who sold in May actually could have retired earlier and with more money—but only if they hung around and waited to buy their stocks back during the usual summer panic.</p><p>Obvious note: If you want an easy life, ignore all trading advice from the Wall Street crowd. Set some basic rules—asset allocation, clearly established sell signals and so on—and stick to them.</p><p>On the other hand, there’s no point leaving money on the table if you’re willing to take a more active role.</p><p>The Wall Street phrase “sell in May” dates back at least to the 1930s. Originally it seems to have started in Great Britain, where the rhyme went “sell in May, go away, and don’t come back till St Leger’s Day”—meaning a famous horse race that takes place in mid-September. The theory was that the stock market’s returns over the summer months are usually so dismal that there’s really no point being in the market.</p><p>The updated version of this adage calls it “the Hallowe’en Effect,” and stretches the hiatus from May 1 to October 31: A full six months.</p><p>It sounds like superstitious nonsense, but there is some remarkable evidence for it.One exhaustive academic studylooked at all the available stock market data from around the world going as far back as 1693 (coincidentally, the time of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts—make of this what you will).</p><p>“In none of the 65 countries for which we have total returns and short term interest rates available—with the exception of Mauritius — can we reject a Sell in May effect,” report researchers Cherry Zhang and Ben Jacobsen. “Summer risk premiums are not only not significantly positive, they are in most cases not even marginally positive. In 45 countries the excess returns during summer have been negative, and in seven significantly so,” they write. In other words: Historically, all the stock market’s returns have come during the winter months. During the summer months, typically, the stock market’s returns haven’t been any better than the returns on keeping your money in the bank.</p><p>(Oh, unless you’re living in Mauritius.)</p><p>Smart money mavens have a number of pushbacks to all this. They’ll point out that this is somewhat random, and makes no logical sense. They’ll warn that likely gains don’t really compensate for the trading costs, the potential taxes (in a taxable account). And they’ll add that you risk missing out if the market rises.</p><p>Furthermore, they’ll say, once you and I get in the habit of getting into the market and then out of it again, most of us will simply mess it up. We’ll get back in too early, or too late, or not at all.</p><p>All reasonable points.</p><p>So the advice, “leave it alone,” is not wrong.</p><p>But…the mathematical criticism of “sell in May” is partly off-beam. That’s because critics assume we sell on May 1 and go away, and don’t come back until October 31.</p><p>I’ve looked through the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average&nbsp;DJIA,+0.70%&nbsp;going back to 1900 and something amazing leaps out.</p><p>Ignore where the market ends up on October 31. The real opportunity occurs at some point during the six month period.</p><p>There has<i>almost always</i>been a “summer selloff.” In 105 out of 120 years, or 88% of the time, the stock market has posted a decline at some stage in the six months after May 1.</p><p>So in almost 9 years out of 10, someone who sold their stock funds at the start of May was able to buy them back more cheaply during the next six months.</p><p>The average decline is 8%. That’s measured from May through the bottom of the slump.</p><p>In more than half of all years, the Dow Jones has fallen at least 5% during the summer lull, and in nearly one year out of three it has fallen by double digits.</p><p>These, of course, included such greatest hits as 2008 (a crash of 37%), 2002 (28%), 1987 (24%), 1907 (32%), and, of course, our old friend the catastrophe of 1929-32.&nbsp; Nearly all the terrible carnage of 1929-1932 took place during the summer months.</p><p>Weird, but true.</p><p>An average selloff of 8% is not small potatoes. Over 20 years, someone who timed such a move perfectly every time would earn a remarkable 400% return.</p><p>If the stock market’s past is any guide to the future, the really clever move would be for us to sell our SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETFSPY,+0.22%,Vanguard Total Stock Market Index FundVTSMX,+0.20%or similar this Monday…and then hang around for the sale.
