The approach contrasts with that of its European peers, which are planning long-term pivots toward more renewable energies over time.</p>\n<p>“We are surprised that the release does not mention any longer-term ‘net-zero’ related targets like some of its peers have announced recently,” Biraj Borkhataria of RBC Capital Markets wrote in a note. Chevron’s emissions targets are “conservative and we were expecting the company to increase its ambition.”</p>\n<p>Shares of the company fell 1.5% to $96.55 at 2:18 p.m. in New York. Brent crude traded down 0.1%.</p>\n<p>Chevron’s ability to buy other companies may have something to do with its aversion to promises of cutting absolute levels of carbon emissions. It has the strongest financial position among the world’s oil majors and can grow not only through investing in its existing oil fields but also through acquisitions. Chevron’s presentation comes less than four months after U.S. rival Exxon Mobil Corp. was forced to replace a quarter of its board with more climate-friendly directors after a successful activist campaign gained support from Wall Street’s biggest investors. Chevron’s board received its own wake-up call in May when investors voted against its recommendations in favor of reducing the company’s so-called Scope 3 emissions, or those from fuel and other products it makes.</p>\n<p>Raising investments in low-carbon technologies is “a relatively modest step when what is needed is a giant leap,” said Andrew Logan of Ceres, a non-profit coalition of companies and investors who manage more than $47 trillion. The S&P 500 dipped 0.75% to 4,327.16 and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.8% to 14,427.24.\nThe three averages closed the week lower to each snap 3-week win streaks. The Dow ended the week down 0.52%, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.97% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.87% during the same period.\n\nA U.S.consumer sentimentindex from the University of Michigan came in at 80.8 for the first half of July, down from 85.5 last month and worse than estimates from economists, who projected an increase. The report released Friday showed inflation expectations rising, with consumers believing prices will increase 4.8% in the next year, the highest level since August 2008.\nThe Dow gave up its gains early Friday shortly after the University of Michigan report came out 30 minutes into the session. Anyone who has ridden GME or AMC up, I congratulate and tip my hat to you. This would benefit AMC by improving its balance sheet and increase its cash on hand. It seems like people don't understand that when a company issues more shares, the initial batch becomes diluted and is worthless because of the additional supply. AMC can issue shares and strengthen its balance sheet, but it won't solve its profit problems. AAPL pays more in dividends to its shareholders every quarter than the profit AMC has generated in the past decade, yet AMC is the stock generating larger returns.</p>\n<p>When investors purchase shares of AMC, they are buying a company with negative EPS. AMC's P/E ratio isn't measurable on a trailing twelve-month or a forward basis, yet investors are willing to pay for nonexistent earnings. In the comments of my&nbsp;AMC article, people said fundamentals don't matter. I understand that AMC has been a technical trade, but that doesn't change the reality that investors are paying for a company with negative earnings.Currently, the average PE Ratio for the S&amp;P is 45.02. If I use the EPS AAPL generated in the first 6 months of the fiscal year 2021 of $3.08, their PE Ratio would be 40.55. For the TTM, AAPL has generated $4.49 in EPS, which brings their PE Ratio down to 28.09. Currently, investors are paying $28.09 for every $1 in earnings AAPL generates, which is low for the tech industry.Amazon (AMZN)&nbsp;has a PE of 62.44,Microsoft (MSFT)34.93, and&nbsp;Google (GOOGL)of 32.05. For the first 6 months of 2021,AAPLhas generated $201.02 billion in revenue, $82.41 billion in gross profit, and $52.39 billion in net income. In 2021 AAPL has already generated 73.23% ($201.02 billion) of 2020's total revenue, then 78.51% of 2020's gross income ($82.41 billion) and 91.25% of 2020's total net income ($52.39 billion). AAPL is on track to decimate its previous records, and unless something unfathomable occurs, 2021 will be AAPL's best year ever.</p>\n<p>So the real questions are what's causing the surge in AAPL's financials, and are they sustainable? Part of the reason is AAPL has seen an increase in its hardware sales from iPhone 12's down to iPads. An argument can be made that many people needed to upgrade their technology during the pandemic due to working from home or remote learning, but that logic can't be used for 2021. At the end of April, when&nbsp;AAPL reported Q2,their iPhone sales exceeded expectations by $7.14 billion, Mac sales by $2.2 billion, and iPad sales by $2.01 billion. These numbers were a year later, and while the iPhone 12, which was AAPL's first 5G release, was expected to create tailwinds, I believe the pandemic pushed society into a place where a greater emphasis is placed on technology.</p>\n<p>I believe AAPL will continue to see strong hardware sales, but that's only one piece of the puzzle. Services and Wearables Home and Accessories are becoming huge components of AAPL's financial metrics. In&nbsp;2018 Services&nbsp;generated $39.75 billion in revenue. In 2019 Services increased by $6.54 billion (16.46%) as they finished the year with $46.29 billion in revenue. In 2020 Services grew by $7.48 billion (16.15%) as its revenue totaled $53.77 billion. In the first 6 months of 2020, Services has already generated $32.66 billion in revenue, which is 60.75% of 2020's total revenue. Services continue to grow creating a true business segment of reoccurring revenue for AAPL. The beauty of Services is with each piece of hardware AAPL sells; there is an opportunity to generate additional revenue through Services every month.</p>\n<p>Services are becoming a home run for AAPL as it diversifies its revenue mix away from being solely constructed from physical products. At the close of the fiscal year 2020, Services had increased its annual revenue by $29.42 billion (120.83%) in just 4 years. In the first 6 months of 2021, Services has generated $32.66 billion, which is 60% of 2020's annual revenue. AAPL is on track to crack $60 billion in revenue from Services in the fiscal year 2021. AAPL is certainly on track to generate $35 billion-plus in revenue from Wearables Home and Accessories in the fiscal year 2021. For the first 6 months of 2021,AAPLhas generated $201.02 billion in revenue, $82.41 billion in gross profit, and $52.39 billion in net income. In 2021 AAPL has already generated 73.23% ($201.02 billion) of 2020's total revenue, then 78.51% of 2020's gross income ($82.41 billion) and 91.25% of 2020's total net income ($52.39 billion). AAPL is on track to decimate its previous records, and unless something unfathomable occurs, 2021 will be AAPL's best year ever.\nSo the real questions are what's causing the surge in AAPL's financials, and are they sustainable? Part of the reason is AAPL has seen an increase in its hardware sales from iPhone 12's down to iPads. An argument can be made that many people needed to upgrade their technology during the pandemic due to working from home or remote learning, but that logic can't be used for 2021. At the end of April, when AAPL reported Q2,their iPhone sales exceeded expectations by $7.14 billion, Mac sales by $2.2 billion, and iPad sales by $2.01 billion. These numbers were a year later, and while the iPhone 12, which was AAPL's first 5G release, was expected to create tailwinds, I believe the pandemic pushed society into a place where a greater emphasis is placed on technology.\nI believe AAPL will continue to see strong hardware sales, but that's only one piece of the puzzle. Services and Wearables Home and Accessories are becoming huge components of AAPL's financial metrics. In 2018 Services generated $39.75 billion in revenue. In 2019 Services increased by $6.54 billion (16.46%) as they finished the year with $46.29 billion in revenue. In 2020 Services grew by $7.48 billion (16.15%) as its revenue totaled $53.77 billion. In the first 6 months of 2020, Services has already generated $32.66 billion in revenue, which is 60.75% of 2020's total revenue. Services continue to grow creating a true business segment of reoccurring revenue for AAPL. The beauty of Services is with each piece of hardware AAPL sells; there is an opportunity to generate additional revenue through Services every month.\nServices are becoming a home run for AAPL as it diversifies its revenue mix away from being solely constructed from physical products. At the close of the fiscal year 2020, Services had increased its annual revenue by $29.42 billion (120.83%) in just 4 years. In the first 6 months of 2021, Services has generated $32.66 billion, which is 60% of 2020's annual revenue. AAPL is on track to crack $60 billion in revenue from Services in the fiscal year 2021. AAPL is certainly on track to generate $35 billion-plus in revenue from Wearables Home and Accessories in the fiscal year 2021. We're going to find out that once again, AAPL continues to buy shares by the billions while reporting that in 9 months, they have generated more net income than all of 2020. In the first 6 months of operations, AAPL has generated $201.02 billion in revenue and $52.39 billion in net income while giving back $53.2 billion in buybacks and dividends. C3.ai went public at $42 per share via an IPO last December, opened at $100 on the first day, but now trades in the low $60s.</p>\n<p>Both stocks have underperformed the S&amp;P 500 this year as investors have been moving from growth to value stocks, but is one of these companies a better long-term play on the&nbsp;booming AI market?</p>\n<p><b>The differences between Palantir and C3.ai</b></p>\n<p>Palantir, which is named after the all-seeing orbs from<i>The Lord of the Ring</i>s, helps organizations accumulate data on individuals from disparate sources, then processes it with algorithms to make data-driven decisions.</p>\n<p>Palantir's biggest customer is the U.S. government, and its tools are used by the CIA, FBI, ICE, and all branches of the military. Its technology was reportedly used to hunt down Osama bin Laden in 2011, but it was also used by ICE in recent years to locate and deport undocumented immigrants.</p>\n<p>C3.ai initially only served energy companies before expanding into other markets. Unlike Palantir, which gathers data from external and internal sources, C3.ai mainly uses a company's internal operations.</p>\n<p>C3.ai's algorithms can schedule maintenance routines, detect fraud, optimize inventories, and improve CRM (customer relationship management) systems. In short, it's a lot less controversial bet than Palantir.</p>\n<p><b>How fast is Palantir growing?</b></p>\n<p>Palantir's revenue increased 47% to $1.1 billion&nbsp;in 2020. Its government revenue rose 77% as its commercial revenue grew 22%.</p>\n<p>It expanded its government contracts with the FDA, U.S. Army, and&nbsp;U.S. Air Force, and its commercial business attracted big customers including&nbsp;<b>Rio Tinto</b>,<b>PG&amp;E</b>, and&nbsp;<b>BP</b>. Its adjusted gross and operating margins expanded, but it still posted a net loss of $1.2 billion -- compared to a loss of $580 million in 2019.</p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2021, Palantir's revenue rose 49% year-over-year to $341 million, with 76% growth in its government business and 19% growth in its commercial business. Its adjusted gross and operating margins expanded again, but its net loss again widened, from $54.3 million to $123.5 million. On the bright side, its&nbsp;adjusted EBITDA&nbsp;turned positive with a profit of $119.8 million -- but that excludes its stock-based compensation and a lot of \"one time\" expenses.</p>\n<p>Wall Street expects Palantir's revenue to rise 35% this year, while the company expects its annual revenue to increase more than 30% every year through 2025. That confident outlook indicates a belief that its government business will remain stable as it gradually gains more commercial customers, but the company could remain steeped in controversy about data-gathering and deeply unprofitable for years to come.</p>\n<p><b>How fast is C3.ai growing?</b></p>\n<p>C3.ai's revenue rose 17% to $183.2 million in&nbsp;fiscal 2021, which ended in April. That marked a significant slowdown from its 71% growth in 2020, mainly due to pandemic-related disruptions of the energy and industrial sectors.</p>\n<p>Its average contract value also decreased from $12.1 million in 2020 to $7.2 million in 2021, even as it initiated new enterprise AI projects with big customers like&nbsp;<b>3M</b>,<b>Consolidated Edison</b>,<b>Shell</b>, and the New York Power Authority. But its total number of customers rose 82% to 89 at the end of the year, which indicates its business could recover quickly after the pandemic ends. It expects its revenue to increase 33% to 35% in the current fiscal year.</p>\n<p>C3.ai's adjusted gross margin stayed flat in fiscal 2021 as its operating margin remained in the red, but its net loss narrowed year-over-year from $69.4 million to $55.7 million. It doesn't calculate its profits in adjusted EBITDA terms, and analysts expect it to stay unprofitable for the foreseeable future.</p>\n<p><b>The valuations and verdict</b></p>\n<p>Palantir and C3.ai trade at 31 and 26 times this year's sales, respectively. Those high price-to-sales ratios indicate neither stock is cheap in this market, especially as&nbsp;investors rotate&nbsp;from growth to value stocks.</p>\n<p>That said, it makes more sense to invest in the company that is more dependent on stable government customers than the one that relies heavily on the macro-sensitive energy and industrial sectors. It also makes more sense to invest in the company with superior revenue growth if both stocks are trading at comparable price-to-sales ratios.</p>\n<p>Therefore, Palantir might be more controversial than C3.ai, but I believe it's the better growth play in the AI market. The S&P 500 dipped 0.75% to 4,327.16 and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.8% to 14,427.24.\nThe three averages closed the week lower to each snap 3-week win streaks. The Dow ended the week down 0.52%, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.97% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.87% during the same period.\n\nA U.S.consumer sentimentindex from the University of Michigan came in at 80.8 for the first half of July, down from 85.5 last month and worse than estimates from economists, who projected an increase. The report released Friday showed inflation expectations rising, with consumers believing prices will increase 4.8% in the next year, the highest level since August 2008.\nThe Dow gave up its gains early Friday shortly after the University of Michigan report came out 30 minutes into the session. It’s more ambiguous. If the numbers say anything, maybe it’s that “sell in May and go away” is only half right. Since 1900, someone who sold in May actually could have retired earlier and with more money—but only if they hung around and waited to buy their stocks back during the usual summer panic.</p><p>Obvious note: If you want an easy life, ignore all trading advice from the Wall Street crowd. Set some basic rules—asset allocation, clearly established sell signals and so on—and stick to them.</p><p>On the other hand, there’s no point leaving money on the table if you’re willing to take a more active role.</p><p>The Wall Street phrase “sell in May” dates back at least to the 1930s. Originally it seems to have started in Great Britain, where the rhyme went “sell in May, go away, and don’t come back till St Leger’s Day”—meaning a famous horse race that takes place in mid-September. The theory was that the stock market’s returns over the summer months are usually so dismal that there’s really no point being in the market.</p><p>The updated version of this adage calls it “the Hallowe’en Effect,” and stretches the hiatus from May 1 to October 31: A full six months.</p><p>It sounds like superstitious nonsense, but there is some remarkable evidence for it.One exhaustive academic studylooked at all the available stock market data from around the world going as far back as 1693 (coincidentally, the time of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts—make of this what you will).</p><p>“In none of the 65 countries for which we have total returns and short term interest rates available—with the exception of Mauritius — can we reject a Sell in May effect,” report researchers Cherry Zhang and Ben Jacobsen. “Summer risk premiums are not only not significantly positive, they are in most cases not even marginally positive. In 45 countries the excess returns during summer have been negative, and in seven significantly so,” they write. In other words: Historically, all the stock market’s returns have come during the winter months. During the summer months, typically, the stock market’s returns haven’t been any better than the returns on keeping your money in the bank.</p><p>(Oh, unless you’re living in Mauritius.)</p><p>Smart money mavens have a number of pushbacks to all this. They’ll point out that this is somewhat random, and makes no logical sense. They’ll warn that likely gains don’t really compensate for the trading costs, the potential taxes (in a taxable account). And they’ll add that you risk missing out if the market rises.</p><p>Furthermore, they’ll say, once you and I get in the habit of getting into the market and then out of it again, most of us will simply mess it up. We’ll get back in too early, or too late, or not at all.</p><p>All reasonable points.</p><p>So the advice, “leave it alone,” is not wrong.</p><p>But…the mathematical criticism of “sell in May” is partly off-beam. That’s because critics assume we sell on May 1 and go away, and don’t come back until October 31.</p><p>I’ve looked through the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average&nbsp;DJIA,+0.70%&nbsp;going back to 1900 and something amazing leaps out.</p><p>Ignore where the market ends up on October 31. The real opportunity occurs at some point during the six month period.</p><p>There has<i>almost always</i>been a “summer selloff.” In 105 out of 120 years, or 88% of the time, the stock market has posted a decline at some stage in the six months after May 1.</p><p>So in almost 9 years out of 10, someone who sold their stock funds at the start of May was able to buy them back more cheaply during the next six months.</p><p>The average decline is 8%. That’s measured from May through the bottom of the slump.</p><p>In more than half of all years, the Dow Jones has fallen at least 5% during the summer lull, and in nearly one year out of three it has fallen by double digits.</p><p>These, of course, included such greatest hits as 2008 (a crash of 37%), 2002 (28%), 1987 (24%), 1907 (32%), and, of course, our old friend the catastrophe of 1929-32.&nbsp; Nearly all the terrible carnage of 1929-1932 took place during the summer months.</p><p>Weird, but true.</p><p>An average selloff of 8% is not small potatoes. Over 20 years, someone who timed such a move perfectly every time would earn a remarkable 400% return.</p><p>If the stock market’s past is any guide to the future, the really clever move would be for us to sell our SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETFSPY,+0.22%,Vanguard Total Stock Market Index FundVTSMX,+0.20%or similar this Monday…and then hang around for the sale. It’s more ambiguous. If the numbers say anything, maybe it’s that “sell in May and go away” is only half right. Since 1900, someone who sold in May actually could have retired earlier and with more money—but only if they hung around and waited to buy their stocks back during the usual summer panic.Obvious note: If you want an easy life, ignore all trading advice from the Wall Street crowd. Set some basic rules—asset allocation, clearly established sell signals and so on—and stick to them.On the other hand, there’s no point leaving money on the table if you’re willing to take a more active role.The Wall Street phrase “sell in May” dates back at least to the 1930s. Originally it seems to have started in Great Britain, where the rhyme went “sell in May, go away, and don’t come back till St Leger’s Day”—meaning a famous horse race that takes place in mid-September. The theory was that the stock market’s returns over the summer months are usually so dismal that there’s really no point being in the market.The updated version of this adage calls it “the Hallowe’en Effect,” and stretches the hiatus from May 1 to October 31: A full six months.It sounds like superstitious nonsense, but there is some remarkable evidence for it.One exhaustive academic studylooked at all the available stock market data from around the world going as far back as 1693 (coincidentally, the time of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts—make of this what you will).“In none of the 65 countries for which we have total returns and short term interest rates available—with the exception of Mauritius — can we reject a Sell in May effect,” report researchers Cherry Zhang and Ben Jacobsen. “Summer risk premiums are not only not significantly positive, they are in most cases not even marginally positive. In 45 countries the excess returns during summer have been negative, and in seven significantly so,” they write. In other words: Historically, all the stock market’s returns have come during the winter months. During the summer months, typically, the stock market’s returns haven’t been any better than the returns on keeping your money in the bank.(Oh, unless you’re living in Mauritius.)Smart money mavens have a number of pushbacks to all this. They’ll point out that this is somewhat random, and makes no logical sense. They’ll warn that likely gains don’t really compensate for the trading costs, the potential taxes (in a taxable account). And they’ll add that you risk missing out if the market rises.Furthermore, they’ll say, once you and I get in the habit of getting into the market and then out of it again, most of us will simply mess it up. We’ll get back in too early, or too late, or not at all.All reasonable points.So the advice, “leave it alone,” is not wrong.But…the mathematical criticism of “sell in May” is partly off-beam. That’s because critics assume we sell on May 1 and go away, and don’t come back until October 31.I’ve looked through the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.70% going back to 1900 and something amazing leaps out.Ignore where the market ends up on October 31. The real opportunity occurs at some point during the six month period.There hasalmost alwaysbeen a “summer selloff.” In 105 out of 120 years, or 88% of the time, the stock market has posted a decline at some stage in the six months after May 1.So in almost 9 years out of 10, someone who sold their stock funds at the start of May was able to buy them back more cheaply during the next six months.The average decline is 8%. That’s measured from May through the bottom of the slump.In more than half of all years, the Dow Jones has fallen at least 5% during the summer lull, and in nearly one year out of three it has fallen by double digits.These, of course, included such greatest hits as 2008 (a crash of 37%), 2002 (28%), 1987 (24%), 1907 (32%), and, of course, our old friend the catastrophe of 1929-32.  Nearly all the terrible carnage of 1929-1932 took place during the summer months.Weird, but true.An average selloff of 8% is not small potatoes.
