What everybody wants to know is whether the panel finally has gotten around to talking about talking about moving away from its ubereasy monetary policy.</p>\n<p>We all know that the FOMC won’t take any substantive steps in terms of its massive securities purchases, which are still running at $120 billion a month. As for its key federal-funds rate target, that’s stuck at 0% to 0.25% (although there’s an outside chance of technical tweaking of some other Fed-administered rates to address the billions in excess cash sloshing around in the money markets).</p>\n<p>We’ll be looking for what’s in the FOMC’s formal policy statement and the panel’s updated Summary of Economic Projections, which will include the amalgam of the committee members’ guesses on key economic gauges, such as gross domestic product, inflation, and unemployment. Most likely, when that is posted&nbsp;on the Fed’s website&nbsp;at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, most folks will probably head straight for the FOMC’s guesses on the fed-funds rate, and specifically when liftoff from near-zero is finally expected.</p>\n<p>The “dot plot”—or graph of the FOMC members’ consensus guesses—puts the first hike all the way out past 2023. That seems a very long-term forecast, and as John Maynard Keynes famously pointed out, in the long run we’re all dead. Some Fed watchers, such as J.P. Morgan’s chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, look for the dots to show a 2023 liftoff.</p>\n<p>The markets, however, already had been pricing in one or more fed-funds rate hikes by 2023. But concurrent with the previously discussed slide in longer-term bond yields, the interest-rate futures markets have effectively priced out one of those short-term rate increases. In addition, the derivatives market now sees the fed-funds rate peaking under 2%, some 0.4 of a percentage point lower than what it had priced in earlier this year, according to analysts for&nbsp;Natixis.</p>\n<p>Long before making any rate hikes, the Fed will begin to lessen its accommodation by slowing its current pace of securities purchases, which consist of $80 billion of Treasuries and $40 billion of agency mortgage-backed securities every month. The trillions that the Federal Reserve and other central banks have created have gone a long way to boost the values of assets, which rose by $5 trillion, to $136.9 trillion, in the first quarter, according to new Fed data released this past week. That includes a $3.2 trillion rise in the value of equities owned by households and a $968 billion rise in their real estate holdings.</p>\n<p>The key criterion for reduced Fed accommodation is whether the monetary authorities see “substantial further progress” toward reaching what they deem as maximum employment, probably a deliberately ambiguous standard.</p>\n<p>But the increase in payrolls appears to be constrained as much by the supply of labor as businesses’ desire to hire. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or Jolts, showed&nbsp;a record 9.3 million unfilled openings&nbsp;in April. In addition, 384,000 people left their positions that month, bringing the total of voluntary job quitters to a record four million.</p>\n<p>Anecdotal evidence, including some in the Fed’s beige book summary of economic conditions prepared for the coming meeting, suggests that employers aren’t finding enough workers because of generous unemployment compensation. Unusual for a social science such as economics, there will be a real-time experiment to test this hypothesis as 25 states end the extra $300 weekly payment early.</p>\n<p>Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons write in a research note that these 25 states account for about a quarter of all the unemployed workers. Ending their extra jobless benefits could boost employment by roughly two million in the next few months, they estimate. Another growth spurt should follow in September and October after the extra unemployment insurance expires in the remaining states; schools reopen—providing free daycare for some would-be workers, especially women; and many office employees return to their desks, they add.</p>\n<p>At that point, the Fed might start talking about actually reducing its massive securities purchases. Given the “taper tantrum” thrown by the markets when the central bank slowed its bond buying in 2013, this Fed will want to disclose how, when, and how fast it plans to slow its pour into the punch bowl. The gap left below didn’t scare off traders who came in and immediately purchased shares and options contracts of AMC, which caused the stock to run north even further.</p>\n<p>Bullish AMC options are betting AMC is in for an even larger squeeze and purchased hundreds of call contracts totally well over $8.68 million.</p>\n<p><b>Why It’s Important:</b>When a sweep order occurs, it indicates the trader wanted to get into a position quickly and is anticipating an imminent large move in stock price. Angela Strand — its lead independent director — will assume the CEO position until a permanent leader is found. Becky Roof — an outside hire with extensive finance function experience — has been named interim CFO.</p>\n<p>The resignations come a mere days removed from Lordstown warning in a new SEC filing on its ability to continue as a going concern. Lordstown is also a few weeks removed from telling investors it needed cash — quickly — if it were to meet its new lowered production targets for its electric truck called the Endurance.</p>\n<p>Shares of the company crashed more than 20% in afternoon trading.</p>\n<p>The company also said Monday that a special board committee found that some disclosures it had made on pre-orders for its Endurance truck to be inaccurate. But, it called a report from short-seller Hindenburg Research false and misleading.</p>\n<p>That said, there could be several more shoes to drop on Lordstown investors in the coming weeks.</p>\n<p>Chief among them is what Burns does with his nearly 27% stake in Lordstown. Dumping Lordstown stock could create more selling pressure in the market. It wouldn't be too different than when now ex-Nikola CEO and founder Trevor Milton sold a large slug of stock in April, which put pressure on the stock price. Milton left the company after a critical Hindenburg Research report late in 2020.</p>\n<p>\"Anticipate technical selling pressure related to potential stock disposals from departing management, particularly Mr Burns who is the single largest shareholder of RIDE with a 26.25% stake as of the amended 10-K filed June 8th, 2021 (46.35M shares),\" <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSTLW\">Morgan Stanley</a> auto analyst Adam Jonas said in a note to clients today.</p>\n<p>Jonas recently pulled his rating on Lordstown amidst the uncertainty in its outlook.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://s.yimg.com/os/creatr-uploaded-images/2021-02/1bf2ebe0-75fe-11eb-9aff-27c5a92621c5\" tg-width=\"6294\" tg-height=\"4196\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Lordstown Motors, unveils their new electric pickup truck Endurance in Lordstown, Ohio, on October 15, 2020. If they don't, it could prove mighty costly to overhaul.</p>\n<p>Explained Jonas, \"We continue to believe the biggest issue facing the company is the dependency of the proposition systems in-hub motors. While a change of architecture would add as much as a year or two to the start of production, we believe moving to an alternative motor strategy or an entirely different product and go-to-market strategy altogether may be required to preserve sustainable equity value. It is our understanding that Steve Burns was the primary proponent of the hub motor system.\"</p>\n<p>And finally, there remains the skeletons in Lordstown's closet from Burns that creates a host of unknowns as new management eventually digs in. Consider these factoids: two of the company's board members (Strand and John Rucidlo) have ties (both worked there during Burns' tenure) to Workhorse Group, the trucking company founded by Burns.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the entire Lordstown board oversaw the creation of its existing mess.</p>\n<p>It's likely most of the board will need to be overhauled along with the Burns-created management team. Angela Strand — its lead independent director — will assume the CEO position until a permanent leader is found. Becky Roof — an outside hire with extensive finance function experience — has been named interim CFO.\nThe resignations come a mere days removed from Lordstown warning in a new SEC filing on its ability to continue as a going concern. Lordstown is also a few weeks removed from telling investors it needed cash — quickly — if it were to meet its new lowered production targets for its electric truck called the Endurance.\nShares of the company crashed more than 20% in afternoon trading.\nThe company also said Monday that a special board committee found that some disclosures it had made on pre-orders for its Endurance truck to be inaccurate. But, it called a report from short-seller Hindenburg Research false and misleading.\nThat said, there could be several more shoes to drop on Lordstown investors in the coming weeks.\nChief among them is what Burns does with his nearly 27% stake in Lordstown. Dumping Lordstown stock could create more selling pressure in the market. It wouldn't be too different than when now ex-Nikola CEO and founder Trevor Milton sold a large slug of stock in April, which put pressure on the stock price. ROKU P/S is triple&nbsp;<b>Netflix</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>NFLX</u></b>) and quadruple that of&nbsp;<b>Disney</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>). Nevertheless it is not a flagrant reason to sell it. The amount of hope that its investors have in it now is high. But it is not in the clouds so high to drive a crash.</p>\n<p>ROKU stock rallied 740% from the pandemic crash. Then it corrected 44% and now is somewhere in the middle. The altitude is a bit alarming still 90% above last summer’s breakout. This concern is more serious since the markets are also near all-time highs.</p>\n<p>Last week Federal Reserve “taper” fears resurfaced and could be a drag on the all equities. This trade would not even need a rally to win. In fact, the stock can fall almost 40% and they can still break even. If the stock falls below $220 then they could own the shares there.</p>\n<p>Big moves in stocks usually come from dislocations between reality and expectations. I don’t think there is such a scenario here. It’s a momentum stock but not teetering on disaster. This is a big world so the potential is borderless to a degree. I still don’t quite get why I would need a Roku, so I am not their target audience. In our household we “cut the cord” a while back. But we use our phones and tablets to consume our media without Roku.</p>\n<p><b>ROKU Stock Is in Better Shape Now</b></p>\n<p>Recognizing the improvements is important because the long-term thesis changed for me. This is a streaming stock with no weak asterisks anymore.</p>\n<p>Being profitable does not mean that ROKU stock is now cheap. Experts could point to price-to-earnings ratio to call it expensive. They’d be wrong because for an aggressively growing company P/E is a bad metric. Companies cannot deliver impressive growth on a budget.</p>\n<p>The better gauge to use is the price-to-sales, and at 22 it is reasonable. This is in line with&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) and cheaper than&nbsp;<b>Zoom</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>ZM</u></b>) to use two other growers. ROKU P/S is triple&nbsp;<b>Netflix</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>NFLX</u></b>) and quadruple that of&nbsp;<b>Disney</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>). Nevertheless it is not a flagrant reason to sell it. Then it corrected 44% and now is somewhere in the middle. The altitude is a bit alarming still 90% above last summer’s breakout. First, there would be a strong effort to hold the $280 zone. If that fails it would then trigger the rest of the dip. There is a way to profit from this potential now using options. This is also a way to get bullish the stock but leave room for error.</p>\n<p>An investor can sell the January 2022 ROKU $220 put to be bullish the stock. This trade would not even need a rally to win. In fact, the stock can fall almost 40% and they can still break even. If the stock falls below $220 then they could own the shares there.</p>\n<p>Big moves in stocks usually come from dislocations between reality and expectations. I don’t think there is such a scenario here. It’s a momentum stock but not teetering on disaster. I would not go as far as calling it a bargain but value became less of a threat.</p>\n<p>Earlier I admitted that I was ignorant on one front but did not commit the mistake of shorting it. Back then I knew that my bearish bias was a mere opinion with low conviction.
