COMP360 is a patented formulation of the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms.\n“A high dose of psilocybin works immediately, the day after, for a large number of people, and continues to work,” Compass Chief Executive Officer George Goldsmith said in an interview before the results were made public in a press release. Patients in the trial also all received psychological counseling in addition to the drug.\nGoldsmith said the company believes its 233-person test, a Phase 2b study, is the largest and most rigorous ever done on psilocybin. He called the controlled, double-blind trial significant given it involved 10 countries and seven languages. Only people who had tried two or more prior medications for depression and failed to find relief were included.\nThe results will be of interest to investors in the nascent psychedelics industry, and in particular the U.K.-based company’s top shareholder, Atai Life Sciences NV. Psychedelic stocks have had a rocky road so far this year.\nCompass shares rose as much as 42% in volatile premarket trading Tuesday. They were up 15% to $49.65 at 7:23 a.m. in New York, while Atai advanced 7.8% to $18.\nMany startups in the space have business models built around treatment centers or other therapies that tout the promise of psilocybin or similar molecules. While mushrooms have been used for centuries, there are few clinical data on them.\nAt the Wonderland conference on the psychedelics industry in Miami on Monday, some participants on a panel addressed the potential for Compass’s results to have a ripple effect.\n“If the data is positive from Compass, there will definitely not be a funding crunch,” said Patrick Trucchio, a biotech analyst at H.C. Wainwright & Co., before the release of the trial results.\nGoldsmith declined to comment on whether its results could be extrapolated to natural psilocybin found in psychedelic mushrooms, saying those contain other compounds and don’t have the precise dosing and purity of COMP360, which involves a crystal form in capsules.\nFinal Approval\nThe company needs an even larger study before it can seek final regulatory approval. Goldsmith said that study could begin next year if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration agrees, and Compass could seek final approval by 2024 or 2025.\nThe medicine has already received the agency’s “breakthrough therapy” designation, which is meant to speed up the drug-development process. Compass estimates that more than 100 million people worldwide have treatment-resistant depression, and as many as 30% attempt suicide.\nThere were five patient withdrawals from the trial at the highest dose, compared with about twice as many people on the lower doses who left the trial. Most patients reported at least one mostly mild or moderate side effect, including headache, nausea, fatigue and insomnia.\nThere were also 12 people in the study who exhibited suicidal behavior or thoughts, or who showed intent to harm themselves. This shows the importance of having therapy alongside psilocybin-based treatments, Goldsmith said. The trial included “integration” sessions to help patients process their experience, as well as follow-up sessions.\nGoldsmith said some of the troubled behavior was among the people who hadn’t actually responded to COMP360. Among three participants who exhibited suicidal behavior, two didn’t initially respond to the treatment, while none of the patients with suicidal thoughts had responded. It’s possible that it may have been an effect of their underlying condition -- or even the fact that the drug had failed to help them -- rather than the drug itself, he said.\n“This is not a panacea,” he said. “People have such high expectations. And for some, this might be the last thing they think they can The notions of assisted driving and autonomous vehicles and their differences are not fully understood by the general public.”\n“Tesla has highly assisted technology in their vehicle, but at no point should anyone behind the wheel think that vehicle can drive itself, because it can’t,” Talbott said.\nThe week began with news of a federal investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system after cars using the feature crashed into stopped emergency vehicles.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into a series of crashesby Tesla cars that had the advanced driver-assistance system enabled. NHTSA said that itopened an inquiry into 11 Tesla crashesthat involved emergency vehicles, while still investigating a series of collisions involving cars enabled with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and tractor-trailers.\nThe latest outcry on Capitol Hill follows a stream of news reports and/or social media posts and YouTube videos of drivers engaging in extremely risky behavior while testing the so-called self-driving features of their Tesla. In May, Steven Michael Hendrickson,a 35-year-old father of two in Fontana, Calif., died when his Tesla hit an overturned semitruck. Earlier he had posted videos of driving without his hands on the wheel of his car on the freeway, but the NHTSA was still investigating the role of Autopilot in the crash.\n“The vehicles that Tesla is producing are driver-assisted systems,” said Bryan Reimer, a research scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics. “They are assisting the driver, and the driver needs to maintain vigilance.”\nIt is important to note the difference between Tesla’s dual products with misleading names. “Autopilot” is an ADAS system, a highly advanced version of cruise control meant for highway driving that enables “your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane under your active supervision, assisting with the most burdensome parts of driving,” according to Tesla’s website. Tesla also offers the “FSD” package, now available by a subscription of $99 to $199 a month, which it describes as “access to a suite of more advanced driver assistance features, designed to provide more active guidance and assisted driving under your active supervision.”\nIf only Musk described these systems in a similar manner to the official website. In analyst conference calls and in Tesla’s multi-hour long presentations to its fan base, Musk has been proclaiming that with this software, full autonomy is around the corner.\n“We basically have to solve real-world vision AI and we are,” he said in an earnings call in April. “And the key to solving this is also having some massive data set. So just having well over one million cars on the road that are collecting data… But I am highly confident that we will get this done.”\nBut for all of Musk’s bluster and huge fan base, investors are starting to note that the company’s tactics involving full self-driving technology are dangerous, as opposed to the other companies that are testing autonomous vehicles.\nFor example, Alphabet Inc.’sGOOGGOOGLWaymo, the company with the most hours of autonomous vehicle driving, is currently operating a small scale robotaxi service in parts of Arizona around Phoenix that are not densely populated, without human drivers. It is the only one of its kind in the U.S. In California, Waymo has permits from the DMV to conduct AV testing with a human driver behind the wheel.\n“Waymo cannot just start selling their AVs to anyone, and they can’t just drive them on the roadway, our regulatory system does not allow for that,” Talbott of American University said. “You can test them but no publicly available self-driving car is on the market for purchase because it doesn’t exist.”\nWith FSD testing being done in the real world with untrained drivers, Tesla is conducting the equivalent of clinical trials of a new drug without any professional hourly or daily monitoring of the patient.\n“They are calling it beta, it is a beta system, they are exposing people to substantive risk,” Reimer said.\nMusk’s latest bot is yet another distraction, much like the flame thrower in 2018 sold by his Boring Company, his unwanted assistance to try and help the boys stuck in a cave in Thailand, and other projects. The results found suggest that the stock is currently undervalued and that the company has still more room to go. What may drive the price to go higher? Well, there are different factors that may drive it. One of those is for sure corporate news. For instance, the company may introduce new products or announce a stock split (For the latter, I think this is unlikely, at least not now). However, don't forget also the other side, the risks. This represents a big risk that may slow down Amazon's growth, which could translate into a growth rate of 6% (resulting in Y10 revenues of $764,723 million). To sum up, I will assume a uniform distribution with a maximum of 24% and a minimum of 6%. The results found suggest that the stock is currently undervalued and that the company has still more room to go. What may drive the price to go higher? Well, there are different factors that may drive it. One of those is for sure corporate news. For instance, the company may introduce new products or announce a stock split (For the latter, I think this is unlikely, at least not now). However, don't forget also the other side, the risks. This is the current market capitalization (as of 06/29/2021) of the company and this implies that it is currently 15.18% away from being a $2 trillion company, not bad no?\nAmazon is a unique and growing company that uses its disruptive platform to disrupt any new business it enters. For example, when Amazon announced the acquisition of Whole Foods, Walmart(NYSE:WMT), Kroger(NYSE:KR), Target(NYSE:TGT)took a nice hit in market value. I believe that the company will be able to keep delivering strong top line growth and continued growth in margins, fueled not only by the company's current business expansion but also by entering into new markets and new businesses.\nCompany Analysis\nI initiate Amazon with a bullish rating and a fair value of $3576/share (vs. the current price of $3443/share). The FV is an algorithm-adjusted fair value (the algorithm takes into account fundamental and technical factors, such as DCF FV, momentum, etc.) and it implies that the stock is undervalued by 3.9%.\nTo compute the DCF FV, I used the trailing twelve-month numbers and I also restated the financials since I capitalized on R&D expenses with an amortizable life of 3 years. As with Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL), I don't believe that Amazon's R&D is an operating expense, and for this reason, I treat it as CapEx. The current assumptions lead to revenues of $1,253,844 million in Y10.\nAlong the road, I also assume an improving outlook for operating margins with the target operating margin of 13.2% (vs current restated operating margin of 9.03%). If the company will be able to meet this target, it will result in operating margins in Y10 of $163,097 million.\nFinally, in doing my estimates, I used a WACC of 5.75% and a sales to capital ratio (or how much the company is going to reinvest to keep its business growing) of 2.95.\nBy putting it together, I obtain a DCF value of $3328/share.\nMonte Carlo Simulation\nRather than showing you only my point estimates, which may be right but also may be wrong, let's use probability distributions for inputs. Simulations allow us to assess the impact of continuous risk (e.g., changes in operating margins). In particular, I would like to focus on what I consider the main inputs of interest to get a bigger picture of the risk in the company. Those inputs are:\n1. Revenue Growth:\nIn my DCF analysis, I assumed an expected CAGR Y2-Y5 of 15% with lower rates going forward. This assumption lead to revenues in Y10 of $1,253,844 million. While it is a reasonable assumption, Amazon is full of surprises, and it may deliver a top line growth well above my expectations. In the latter, I see a possible scenario with a CAGR Y2-Y5 of 24%, resulting in Y10 revenues of $1,989,952 million. However, we all know that regulators represent a big risk for the company. According to WSJ sources, if the \"giant-tech bill\" will pass, the company may be forced to either split into two companies or spin off its private-label product businesses. This represents a big risk that may slow down Amazon's growth, which could translate into a growth rate of 6% (resulting in Y10 revenues of $764,723 million). To sum up, I will assume a uniform distribution with a maximum of 24% and a minimum of 6%. Operating Margin:\nCurrently, Amazon has a restated operating margin of 9.03% TTM (vs not restated EBIT margin of 6.83%). In my DCF, I assumed a target operating margin of 13.2%. While this represents my most likely scenario for the company, I cannot close my eyes to the fact that, even if the company is improving its margins, it is following a very slow climb. For instance, AWS presents a current operating margin of 30% TTM and a revenue growth rate of 29.53% in 2020. A trend which is expected to continue, driven by improving outlook and with new partners joining the party. The last to join the party are Ferrari(NYSE:RACE)and Swisscom(OTCPK:SWZCF)who have chosen AWS as their preferred cloud partner.\nIn 2020,according to Gartner, AWS generated revenue 2 times bigger than Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT). In doing my analysis, I estimated a cost of capital of 5.8% (with the current 10Y rate of 1.48 and an implied ERP of 4.54%). To account for the possibility that I made some mistakes along the road, I will rely on a lognormal distribution with the most likely scenario of 5.8%. COMP360 is a patented formulation of the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms.\n“A high dose of psilocybin works immediately, the day after, for a large number of people, and continues to work,” Compass Chief Executive Officer George Goldsmith said in an interview before the results were made public in a press release. Patients in the trial also all received psychological counseling in addition to the drug.\nGoldsmith said the company believes its 233-person test, a Phase 2b study, is the largest and most rigorous ever done on psilocybin. He called the controlled, double-blind trial significant given it involved 10 countries and seven languages. Only people who had tried two or more prior medications for depression and failed to find relief were included.\nThe results will be of interest to investors in the nascent psychedelics industry, and in particular the U.K.-based company’s top shareholder, Atai Life Sciences NV. Psychedelic stocks have had a rocky road so far this year.\nCompass shares rose as much as 42% in volatile premarket trading Tuesday. They were up 15% to $49.65 at 7:23 a.m. in New York, while Atai advanced 7.8% to $18.\nMany startups in the space have business models built around treatment centers or other therapies that tout the promise of psilocybin or similar molecules. While mushrooms have been used for centuries, there are few clinical data on them.\nAt the Wonderland conference on the psychedelics industry in Miami on Monday, some participants on a panel addressed the potential for Compass’s results to have a ripple effect.\n“If the data is positive from Compass, there will definitely not be a funding crunch,” said Patrick Trucchio, a biotech analyst at H.C. Goldsmith said that study could begin next year if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration agrees, and Compass could seek final approval by 2024 or 2025.\nThe medicine has already received the agency’s “breakthrough therapy” designation, which is meant to speed up the drug-development process. Compass estimates that more than 100 million people worldwide have treatment-resistant depression, and as many as 30% attempt suicide.\nThere were five patient withdrawals from the trial at the highest dose, compared with about twice as many people on the lower doses who left the trial. Most patients reported at least one mostly mild or moderate side effect, including headache, nausea, fatigue and insomnia.\nThere were also 12 people in the study who exhibited suicidal behavior or thoughts, or who showed intent to harm themselves. This shows the importance of having therapy alongside psilocybin-based treatments, Goldsmith said. The trial included “integration” sessions to help patients process their experience, as well as follow-up sessions.\nGoldsmith said some of the troubled behavior was among the people who hadn’t actually responded to COMP360. Among three participants who exhibited suicidal behavior, two didn’t initially respond to the treatment, while none of the patients with suicidal thoughts had responded.
